Day 31 Decide about drinking
Today’s Thought: Once I accept the fact that I need to limit my drinking, dieting will be easier.
Does your diet plan discourage alcohol? If so, how do you feel about giving it up? Drinking alcohol is an individual choice. My personal decision is to have a drink only occasionally because I’d much rather spend my calories on food. If you want to fit drinking into your diet, you need to plan your alcohol intake in advance, just as you do your food intake. This means limiting your consumption and making sure that alcohol doesn’t loosen your inhibitions about eating.
How Much, How Often
Think about your choices: You can decide not to drink at all, or you can set some kind of limit. For example, you might decide to have one drink a day, a week, a month, or somewhere in-between. Or you might have a drink just on special occasions. If you choose to drink, you’ll need to figure out how to fit it in without taking in too many calories. Ask yourself, Do I really want to spend my calories this way? Would I rather eat or drink instead?
Whatever you decide to do about alcohol is fine, as long as: You don’t skimp on food. You plan when and how much you’ll drink. You calculate beforehand how caloric the drink is. You don’t allow alcohol to lead to unplanned eating.
What is your decision about drinking? Commit in Writing:

I make decisions about if and when to drink but I don’t always follow the rules: Whatever you decide to do about alcohol is fine, as long as: You don’t skimp on food. You plan when and how much you’ll drink. You calculate beforehand how caloric the drink is. You don’t allow alcohol to lead to unplanned eating.
The last one is the toughest but one that I plan to work on it this holiday season. Drinking really only comes up in social situations so it is limited in the number of days. I have to give myself credit for deciding in advance what those days may be.

When I have wine or alcoholic beverages I know I will and plan for them. I can go overboard at times but do track. I think that having water between drinks would be a good idea, maybe. I have seen it suggested. I know that wine seems to have me wanting something to soak it up and the points do tend to go up as a result.
Still working on this one.

DH and I do love our wine and we have an extensive cellar. Also, we have several friends who enjoy a glass (or two) of fine wine. As a rule, Mr. Lani and I share a bottle (usually) red on Friday nights with pizza and other assorted treats.
We have been having people over and going out a lot more lately. I definitely make sure I'm either having food and/or drinking water when indulging. I track the calories on Friday. It's a crap shoot when with friends, but so far hasn't impacted my weight.
Oh and cruising. Much more alcohol than the norm, but gym time, walking the ship (they are loooong), and touring seems to combat any extreme gains.

I drink very little, and not because of weight management. When I do drink, I track it (if I'm in tracking mode), and make adjustments to my daily or weekly plan to accommodate it. Does that count as skimping on food? I don't think it does. If I have wine in a restaurant, for example, I don't eat any less at that meal because of it. But I might eat less during the rest of the day as I would because of the meal itself anyway. Or I might eat a little less during the next day or the next two days, again because of the overall meal itself, and not because of the alcohol.

I noticed that it brings on the snack-attacks. I’ve found that planning for it helps immensely. When I don’t have the points available I add activity. My limit is 2 drinks with a glass of sparkling water in between. That usually works well when I’m out or we’re entertaining. Our upcoming cruise is the first one where we intentionally will not be using a drink package. What a difference from 25 years ago 🎉

On our last cruise we had three people with the premium package which allowed 15 drinks a day (!) per person. Needless to say, no one ever approached that limit, except our friend on the last night who was buying rounds for her fellow Uno players. The only reason we go for the premium package versus the plus (or whatever it is) is that the wines allowed are so much better than with the cheaper package. Also we get free meals at the specialty restaurants.

We have drinks usually late Saturday afternoon. I've been working on the resulting snacks and have cut down some. It has been a bit of a problem with my weight but I'm working on it.

I no longer drink much. I may taste something if someone has an unusual drink but that's it. I had to stop when I was taking a med that was contraindicated with alcohol and I never went back to it. It really simplifies a lot of things to stick to club soda/seltzer with a twist or just plain water.
