Thinking Mistake #7: Unhelpful Rules
You mandate actions without taking circumstances into consideration.
"I can't waste food" (Me with the leftovers this week.)
"I can't inconvenience my family by cooking healthier meals or getting the junk food out of the house."

I have no problem throwing away food though I often do it in two steps. For example, I put some cookies in a ziploc bag then put them in a tin. Next step will be to put them in the trash. I can't throw it all away and leave some for my husband but I think when food disappears, he figures I have eaten it. He not only likes the healthier meals I cook but often suggests them over something else. Today I will plan the meals for next week.On Saturday we will stay home. I will have a small steak and he will have a larger one. I will probably bake potatoes and make a nice salad, a simple but good way to ring in the new year.

Until this week I didn't realize what a strong urge I have for eating up leftovers. Need to realize that sometimes there is just too much food and some of it needs to be tossed.

I don't think I have any rules that I feel I must follow. I have no problem throwing food away although my mom would highly disapprove! (she lived through the depression and she saved everything)

We try to purchase serving amounts for the three of us that are appropriate. We purposely make extra amounts of vegetables that I typically pack along with my lunches for work. We make soups and stews, which reheat well so I guess we actually plan for leftovers. But like Linda and jamescat1, I have no problem throwing away food that remains uneaten.

My unhelpful rules pertain to me-time. I feel like I can't indulge myself until my chores are done. And to be doubly certain sure that I truly deserve something pleasurable, I go out of my way to seek out chores to do before allowing myself some down-time. So often I don't sit down to read my book or look at a magazine until it is past time to go to bed. Then I can't read more than one paragraph before falling asleep with my book in my hand. I didn't really get to enjoy that me-time after all.
Who is actually following me around to determine whether I "deserve" me-time? Is there an industrial engineer doing a time-and-motion study? Is my mother looking down from Heaven keeping tabs on me? Will an auditor jump out of the woodwork and scold me? For Pete's sake, I am almost 66 years old! I should be able to take a break if I want one!
BTW -- I absolutely HATE to throw food away if it is something that I have cooked. I put time and effort into preparing that dish, and it deserves to be eaten! That's my unhelpful rule. However, I have no problem with taking leftovers, putting them in a plastic container and leaving it in the fridge for a week or two until it grows fuzz. Then I can throw it away!
Don't most unhelpful rules involve the word "deserve" in some way?

I don't have any problems throwing leftovers away if neither of us will eat it and DH doesn't mind if I do throw food away.We have a small fridge anyway so I'm constantly having to make room for something. He has his snacks and unless I'm really hungry I won't even take a bite of his.I think being a diabetic for 5 years and not eating sweets or desserts really helped me now that I'm not diabetic anymore.I don't like the really sweet desserts.I'm hoping that will keep me from gaining my weight back.I'm also in the process of sacking up my big clothes b/c I don't plan on ever wearing those sizes again and I won't buy those sizes again so I will have to keep on eating healthy.
