Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: Dryuary and beyond! Or Dampuary to begin! January 1 - February 10 (Lunar New Year)
"I look to 2024 with a renewed commitment to Progress” and “Out the Door in 2024” (thanks Cathy!)
Let’s Begin!
Will this be your year? Embrace 2024 with eyes wide open, with accountability, with not just going along, but being the best you can be. For many January 1 is a repeat of a cycle. We may be happy where we are personally, maybe with a bit of tweaking but there remains a niggling if I could just lose those pounds, if I could eat more cleanly, if I could just commit to excercising, could I just get some decent sleep! So let the tweaking and niggling begin to make this year work for us! It will be an adventure and can only enhance us.
Are you ready for this new challenge? If wavering, no matter, join in and take what works for you. Share, enjoy the bonding. But also ask yourself what is holding you back?
How do we kick off the New Year? For many it is the commitment to healthy eating, no drinking and getting into shape. We want to cleanse ourselves of what may be holding us back from being the person we want to be. However, true cleansing does not mean just ridding the body of toxins. We're exposed to harmful substances all the time; they're in our diet (pesticides, microbes, and mercury, to name a few) and the very air we breathe (think disinfectants, deodorizers, and the gasses released by fresh paint). We can choose to eliminate as many of these as possible. But there is also a Spiritual aspect as well. Toxins bring you down. When we eliminate harmful substances from our diet and eliminate as many as possible from our lives, we will feel rejuvenated from the inside out.
During the holidays we can easily overload on food and alcohol as well as the commercialization of the holiday. We may feel inundated with stress and turn to self medication through food and alcohol, and repeat the cycle the next day. The sense of joy and peace that we seek will not be found.
So here we are on the first day of the NEW YEAR! Where will you be a year from today? Will you still be wondering why you are looking for satisfaction through food and alcohol or are you ready to make a change and cleanse yourself of old habits. Let's take the first 40 days of this year to create new habits, cleanse ourselves of old habits, and become the person we know we can be.
From January 1 through February 10 we are challenging ourselves to go without alcohol and cleanse ourselves of habits that make ourselves feel bloated, anxious, and just overwhelmed. For some alcohol issues cannot be manage on your own and this board is here to support you in getting help. This board has posters at many different stages in the journey. Some know that being AF is the way to go, others hope to be AIM, but we are all conscious of the slippery slope that can lead to AIE. We want to feel empowered, not let toxins control us, but let us control toxins.
You will not be kicked out of the challenge because of a slip but understand why the slip, talk about it. Christmas and New Year's may have given you a freedom to overindulge but don't let that continue.
Anytime is a good time to start, there is no magic with a Monday, or starting with the next day since today is lost....but there is some sort of magic with January 1. We are more determined, more open to admitting to our new year resolution because we are all in it together. The trick is to keep that MOMENTUM going and it is a commitment to forty days!
Let's make our living environment a healthy environment. Face it, no matter how motivated, committed you are, on January 1, having alcohol, junk food, trigger foods, in your kitchen is not going to help. Give it away, dump it, GET RID OF IT! Temptation is going to happen. Don't make it easier to give in. You are only kidding yourself when you say I have it in the house for company, for the kids, the just in case.
Assess your kitchen....ask does this help me or hinder me? DO NOT have a sentimental attachment to alcohol or food.....the stuff will still be out there, it does not magically disappear. Remember, this is your health! This is your LIFE!
Let's get going and get those pounds out the door!
Great success vibes to all!

Good Thursday morning and happy February! I'm back to a routine thank heaven! I had a hard time getting to sleep last night and as a result I was later getting started this morning. I've paid bills, had breakfast and made a trip to the dump. When we had so much snow, the garbage pickup wasn't able to make runs and I had some bags of garbage in the garbage that were getting a little smelly. Anyway - just thought I would get us started and now I'm going to get busy around here. I need to get laundry started and am going to clean the house. Need to catch up and then will be back. Everyone have a great morning!

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!! A new month to get it right . In just a few days I’ve learned that I can’t just come home after work and plop on the couch with the computer, I missed 2 hours of my steps, didn’t make my step goal and don’t get much done in the evening. Will see how I can shake that up a bit today. DH has been cooking so I don’t even get out in the kitchen to move around, I will plan to help more tonight and maybe even just do some up and down on the stairs before couch time. This morning I am going to go to knitting for the first hour and I’ve already said no treats there, or only if it was something home made that was so awesome I wouldn’t get to have it again . I have my lunch packed, using up leftovers from the week and not sure what the dinner plan might be. So I wrote in my journal my February goal to Love _ pounds before my Dr appt in March. I’m not putting in a number because that doesn’t seem to work for me and it’s a pass fail. If I lose 1 # I succeed, if I lose 5 # I succeed. It’s really about the baby steps I wrote to get there, water, eat in points, stay AF and get more exercise. Funny how that works . Hope you all have a great start to the new month. I will check in after work. Jan Cindy So glad DS is feeling better and wanted to eat. Yay for having all the groceries in the house to make what he wanted. We always seem to be missing 1 thing. Mostly DH gets an idea in his mind and that’s what it has to be. I had Brussels and some broccoli in the fridge, but he wanted asparagus with salmon so off he went to the store. But then that’s how I got my alone time yesterday so I will not complain Hope the Tylenol kicked in and the headaches start to feel better now that the drops are done. Sorry DSIL has to sneak in food but glad she can do it. Cathy Glad you could help out your friend and you had some sunshine for awhile. We had a little yesterday, and I was hopeful today as I saw the bright moon shining outside the window last night, no clouds. But alas, the fog and clouds have moved in this morning so another gray one here. Sounds like you had a good snuggle place in bed. Yay for the scale responding to the new program. Murphy Thanks for starting us and welcome "home".

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!
DH & I walked to the top of the hill yesterday morning to walk yesterday morning. The sun was nice, but the walking into the wind was nasty. I don't know if I mentioned it, but apparently the batteries on our golf cart need replacing again. We stopped taking it out b/c it's iffy if it will get us home again. When we got back DH had to get ready for a doctor's appointment. I puttered, cleaning off the top of the craft room table (mostly) and going through yarn and magazine baskets, throwing out a lot, taking some of the yarn upstairs. Then couch time. I made a pasta dish for dinner with butternut squash, collard greens, sun dried tomatoes, pine nuts, which we had with grilled hamburger patties. Very satisfying, lots of leftovers. It was the last of my butternut squash from the garden, still have 1 delicata left. The collard greens were some that I had frozen from the garden, so feeling virtuous about eating "free" food. I'm surprised many of you had not heard of turkey Manhattans, we had it a lot as kids and DH would often order it at a diner.
Today is another sunny day, heading to the upper 50's. We got frost again overnight, there doesn't appear to be a cloud in the sky. I finally got a decent night's sleep, although I woke up several times. I had a dream right before I got up about trying to call DH on my cell phone but my phone wasn't working right. So then I was trying to dial from a wall phone in the doctors' lounge at the hospital, but I kept misdialing and the doctors were making me feel less than welcome. Going for my permanent crown this afternoon.
Jan- WTG steps 8/11, PU, stretches, hip PT, AP, blue dot, AF, counting out M&M's at work, down 3# for the month. Have fun at knitting and hope you get a nice number for the month to fill in the blank on your journal.
Vicki- Sorry you had to rush to get to water class. Will this help you to be successful? is a great question to ask. Yay for being a line dance expert! Glad Rylee liked choir.
Liz- WTG AF/OP/tracked/biked. For me, it seems like I get a higher FB calorie burn when I've been up and moving around and less time on the couch, regardless of how many total steps for the day.
Cindy- Glad DS is feeling better, yay for no more eye drops. I'm not committed to Globus, but the travel agent did recommend the tour we're looking at.
Cathy- Yay for scale moving down. Glad you enjoyed visiting your friend and got some sunshine. WTG not buying candy or wine.
Murphy- Thanks for getting us started and welcome back! Sounds like you've been productive already today.

Good morning! Yesterday was an AF/OP/Tracked/Bike day. Even though I did not fall asleep until around 1:00AM, I slept like a log until 8:20AM! Yesterday DD came over with Michael after she dropped Isabel off to pre-school. I colored her hair which to me is a major task because her hair is so thick, so glad she had cut it to her shoulders before Christmas. It was such a joy just having Michael so I could give him my sole attention; he is such a happy baby who smiles the minute you talk to him and he tries to talk back, sometimes I even get a chuckle from him. It was such a fun morning. After DD left, I knitted for a while and caught some TV. This morning is still a cloudy and cold morning. I feel like I am living in Seattle or London, lol! Not much planned except working on the baby blanket for my DSIL. We are waiting for a friend of ours who works for a company like Rotar Rooter (sp?) because DS was cleaning about 20lbs of boneless chicken breast and instead of throwing out the fatty sinew and some untrimmed skin, he was too lazy and threw down my garbage disposal which then clogged my pipes. I think I am seeing some breaks in the clouds, hope it stays that way!
I keep on forgetting to ask about the numbers or rating that a few of you use on the habit accountability portion of this challenge. I know this format was originally set up way back but I must have missed the part about the numerical rating next to each account. Can someone please explain what the numbers mean?
Murphy~ Thank you for getting us started and I ditto what Jan said, "Welcome Home"!!
Amy~ Sorry about the battery for your golf cart. Good luck with your new permanent crown. Your pasta dish sounds delicious! One of my DSIL also makes a butternut squash pasta dish as well she makes sure she makes it when DD visits her because it is Elyse's favorite! When we were kids, my mother would make the Manhattan turkeys however she never called them by name, she just made it. Actually DS does this with left over turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and of course, the turkey on white bread.
Jan~ Enjoy your knitting group this morning. Yay for saying no treats. Good idea not filling in the #lbs goal before your doctor's appointment because anything down is a success! I remember when I used to get home from work, DH already had most of the dinner done and I would just vegetate. Actually I have been doing a lot of that now that I am retired too, lol! As I am getting older, I really don't want to do any cooking, or house work except for the basic and even that some days. I need to seriously think about a house keeper like every two weeks, but I'll have to see about that.
Cindy~ Glad DS is feeling a little better and wanting to eat, and you having the ingredients for his request. Yay for accomplishing so much yesterday, sounds like you were on a roll! Yay for no more eye drops but keep taking the Tylenol for a few more days in case you still have residual effects from the drops.
Cathy~ So glad you and Rosalie were able to visit your friend and that it was much appreciated. WTG not buying any treats to and from your visit. Glad it is warming up for you and you enjoyed your warm nest in bed!
Have a great day!!!

Hi all. Got out of work just before 4, my longest day so far, had an appt at 3:30 so waited to check them out. That is supposed to be my "regular" time, I've just been getting out early when we were slow. I don't think that will be happening anymore next week. Being busy makes the time go faster but I did get into a treat today. Said no junk at knitting or work unless maybe it was "good" ha ha, well someone brought in some chocolate chip cookies. I had one, enjoyed it and moved on even tho I wanted MORE. Survived another day for the most part, one more for the week. SOmeone at knitting brought Valentines, reeces, kit kats, hersheys, yikes. It's a mine field out there folks Not sure what the dinner plan is, I'm parked for right now, went through the mail, have the local weekly paper to read and then figure out our evening. Hope you all had a nice day. See you all tomorrow. Jan Liz Glad you had fun with Michael and DD got her hair colored too! I haven't changed my numbers on the habits lately but I took it as a scale from 1 - 5 If you had a great exercise day you'd get a 4 or 5. Eating off track would be a 1 or 2, something like that. I would Love a housekeeper!! Really just for doing floors mainly. Sorry the sink is plugged. Amy Does it seem like you have to keep getting batteries for the golf cart or is this a new thing? Love that you are still eating from you garden and soon it will be time to start again. Dinner sounded yummy. Glad you got some time to putter while DH was gone and got things picked up on the craft table. Hope the crown went well. Waving hi

Hi girls. Yesterday I had 4 rollovers! Today I went to the Y. I learned a new move at water yoga. You put your arms out on the side of the pool and keep your back and bottom touching the side.while keeping them on the side, you lift your legs. You can sure feel it in your core! I stopped at Bob Evans and had breakfast because I wasn’t sure if the microwave and stove would be working. I only spent 5 points. I came home and slept for 2 hours. 🤦🏼‍♀️ DH had the kitchen back in working order so I was able to make rigatoni for dinner. I also bought some peppermint tea to drink at night. Maybe that will help my night time eating. I have nothing planned for tomorrow, which sounds wonderful! I will do my best to post earlier tomorrow with personals.
