Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: Dryuary and beyond! Or Dampuary to begin! January 1 - February 10 (Lunar New Year)
"I look to 2024 with a renewed commitment to Progressā and āOut the Door in 2024ā (thanks Cathy!)
Letās Begin!
Will this be your year? Embrace 2024 with eyes wide open, with accountability, with not just going along, but being the best you can be. For many January 1 is a repeat of a cycle. We may be happy where we are personally, maybe with a bit of tweaking but there remains a niggling if I could just lose those pounds, if I could eat more cleanly, if I could just commit to excercising, could I just get some decent sleep! So let the tweaking and niggling begin to make this year work for us! It will be an adventure and can only enhance us.
Are you ready for this new challenge? If wavering, no matter, join in and take what works for you. Share, enjoy the bonding. But also ask yourself what is holding you back?
How do we kick off the New Year? For many it is the commitment to healthy eating, no drinking and getting into shape. We want to cleanse ourselves of what may be holding us back from being the person we want to be. However, true cleansing does not mean just ridding the body of toxins. We're exposed to harmful substances all the time; they're in our diet (pesticides, microbes, and mercury, to name a few) and the very air we breathe (think disinfectants, deodorizers, and the gasses released by fresh paint). We can choose to eliminate as many of these as possible. But there is also a Spiritual aspect as well. Toxins bring you down. When we eliminate harmful substances from our diet and eliminate as many as possible from our lives, we will feel rejuvenated from the inside out.
During the holidays we can easily overload on food and alcohol as well as the commercialization of the holiday. We may feel inundated with stress and turn to self medication through food and alcohol, and repeat the cycle the next day. The sense of joy and peace that we seek will not be found.
So here we are on the first day of the NEW YEAR! Where will you be a year from today? Will you still be wondering why you are looking for satisfaction through food and alcohol or are you ready to make a change and cleanse yourself of old habits. Let's take the first 40 days of this year to create new habits, cleanse ourselves of old habits, and become the person we know we can be.
From January 1 through February 10 we are challenging ourselves to go without alcohol and cleanse ourselves of habits that make ourselves feel bloated, anxious, and just overwhelmed. For some alcohol issues cannot be manage on your own and this board is here to support you in getting help. This board has posters at many different stages in the journey. Some know that being AF is the way to go, others hope to be AIM, but we are all conscious of the slippery slope that can lead to AIE. We want to feel empowered, not let toxins control us, but let us control toxins.
You will not be kicked out of the challenge because of a slip but understand why the slip, talk about it. Christmas and New Year's may have given you a freedom to overindulge but don't let that continue.
Anytime is a good time to start, there is no magic with a Monday, or starting with the next day since today is lost....but there is some sort of magic with January 1. We are more determined, more open to admitting to our new year resolution because we are all in it together. The trick is to keep that MOMENTUM going and it is a commitment to forty days!
Let's make our living environment a healthy environment. Face it, no matter how motivated, committed you are, on January 1, having alcohol, junk food, trigger foods, in your kitchen is not going to help. Give it away, dump it, GET RID OF IT! Temptation is going to happen. Don't make it easier to give in. You are only kidding yourself when you say I have it in the house for company, for the kids, the just in case.
Assess your kitchen....ask does this help me or hinder me? DO NOT have a sentimental attachment to alcohol or food.....the stuff will still be out there, it does not magically disappear. Remember, this is your health! This is your LIFE!
Let's get going and get those pounds out the door!
Great success vibes to all!

Good Friday morning all! The boards were down earlier and I couldn't sign in to get the thread started but they seem to be working fine now. Not a lot planned for the day. Need to pick up my groceries from Walmart and plan to give myself a mani/pedi. Insomnia has been kicking my rear this week. Taking a couple of hours to fall asleep but last night I didn't get to sleep until 4:00AM. So maybe I'll even get a nap in later! Coffee has been upsetting my tummy so I've switched to tea this week so I don't think it's a matter of caffeine.
I tried a new gadget out this morning - an egg cooker! I always thought it was silly to have another appliance but the first attempt was stellar! I got tired of trying to peel eggs and losing half of them because the shell wouldn't turn loose! This just slid right off. So it may be a worthwhile gadget to have! LOL

Happy groundhog's day! Murphy, maybe the groundhog messed up the boards, setting it back to yesterday I'm up, had all my morning routines and ate breakfast. Feels good to still have over an hour before I have to head to work. I may go a bit early and see what I can get done and then if there are no late appts I can leave early as I want to go to the grocery after. Looks like DH is going to make pizza for dinner. He made up some dough the other day, is tired of all the commercial frozen we have bought lately and is going to try his own experiments. See how it turns out I'm kind of pizza'd out but willing to try. I have bananas on the counter that will need to get transformed this weekend and I am so hoping we will see some sun one of these days. Plan to make a yarn store run, probably Saturday, and actually get my fancy hat yarn to have here when I'm ready to tackle it. Hope to finish my baby hat this weekend and then I can cast on something new, even tho I still have 3 other projects on the needles No big news around here. Feeling good with where I am going on my journey and staying the course. Everyday I just say, Do it today. Working so far. Hope you have a great day and we get an early spring. Take care all. Jan Murphy Glad the board came up and you could start us. GL with the grocery pick up and then your mani pedi. I'm putting a pedi on my self care list for Feb, maybe towards the end of the month, my sis is talking about taking some days and coming up the 21-23 and we could go together. There is an egg cooker at work that the girls use and I've had eggs from. Does a great job. Maybe I'll just take 6 to work to cook them and then bring them home No extra appliance to buy ha ha. Hope you get your nap. Cindy Did the Celtics pull it out last night? I was watching into the 4th quarter and then decided to go up and read as DH had already gone up. Is DS doing better today? Hope you haven't caught any of that junk. Cathy Sorry the sun was fleeting, we had that too yesterday, saw it shining while I was sitting at a desk at work, and by the time I left the building the clouds were back. I did get to hear the Cardinal singing yesterday tho, and that's always a good sign. Yay for being able to share with friends. GG Always good to learn something new, and it sounds like your pool exercise using some new muscles. Glad your kitchen got put back together. Yay for only 5 points at Bob Evans, easy to get sidetracked there! I always want toast and potatoes when I go out for breakfast, but that sure uses up all the points. Anything fun planned for your weekend? Will you see any kids or GK's, maybe at sports? Liz I just checked the Boston weather and see you are having more of the same. Like us, gray, probably wet part of the day and just not very nice out. They were supposed to have a big fishing tournament here this weekend and it had to get canceled as the ice is too iffy to go out on to fish. You can't believe how many people are so sad that the winter has been so warm It's messing up all their favorite winter sports! Has the baby blanket gotten any easier? Is it a new pattern? Amy YOu are probably typing right now I will check in later. Hi to all.

What a great way to go into the new Year! Happy New Year!
DH & I walked to and from the nature trail yesterday morning, I had 10,000 steps before we got home. I had to eat lunch quickly to get to the dentist on time for my crown. It went well and took about 10 minutes. I went to Walmart for odds and ends, found 2 shirts on clearance, then on to Pike's garden center. I was looking for something to put in the center of the whiskey barrel with the pansies. I was thinking a hardy grass plant, but the guy there talked me into a lemon cypress. As I was walking to the car I looked at the tag which said protect from frost. I thought about taking it back, but decided it was too cute and will just keep it inside until we are past frost danger. It's only about 8 inches tall. Then I went to the used book store, traded some books, picked out 3 paperbacks which cost me under $3 with my trade. I stopped at Publix for milk and ground beef then went through the Zaxby's drive thru for a couple of their Asian salads that we've been wanting to try. DD didn't eat much, so one salad would probably been enough for DH & I. I may try to eat the leftovers in a wrap for lunch. While I was gone DH put together a 4 shelf plant stand that I bought to match the one I already have in the kitchen area. After dinner I finished the tissue box cover while watching Sanditon and a PBS special on LaFayette. I was in bed before midnight but had trouble falling asleep so I read some more.
It's another sunny day, heading to the 60's. Fat Trout (the golf car repair people) are coming to pick it up then we'll go to the lake to walk. We're planning spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and DS bringing a cake that he will get for free with a birthday coupon from Publix.
Liz- WTG AF/OP/tracked/biked. Yay for sleeping well and for DD & Michael coming over. Sorry your pipes are clogged. For me the accountability numbers are pretty subjective, like Jan said. I rarely give myself a 5 for anything. If I have a goal, like 11,000 steps and get 11,000 steps, that a 3. Less than 11,000 is a 2, over is a 4. DH was telling me about something he saw where if you are a senior and feeling comfortable with your money that you should not be doing your yard yourself. I asked if that would apply to a housekeeper too, LOL.
Jan- WTG working until almost 4 and mostly navigating the minefield of treats. A homemade chocolate chip cookie would be worth it to me. The golf cart batteries are supposed to last about 5 years but DH let them go dry and I'm guessing that's why we are having issues.
Vicki- WTG for 4 rollovers and learning a new core move at water yoga. Yay for no plans for today.
Cathy- Yay for the scale being down, a bit of sunshine and leftovers.
Murphy- Thanks for getting us started. Sorry you had trouble sleeping and the board was down. Any amount of caffeine hurts my stomach, citrus too. Enjoy your egg cooker.

M-W Word of the Day damask noun | DAM-usk What It Means Damask refers to a usually shiny, thick fabric (as of linen, cotton, silk, or rayon) made with patterns. The word can also be used as a synonym of Damascus steel, or for a grayish red color. // The old chair was upholstered in a blue silk damask which was now faded and threadbare.

It's been a good day around here. I got my groceries this morning and got them all put away. Tried to just buy the minimum stuff and will pick up milk and salad stuff as needed later in the month. Gave myself a mani/pedi. Feels good even though they aren't perfect! LOL. Then I started on an organizing project. Y'all know how bad I am at just continuing to put stuff in a drawer or closet and then I forget what is in there. I decided I needed to clean out my night stand. Even though it is only 2 drawers, you wouldn't believe how much stuff I had crammed in there! LOL. Found two old pair of eye glasses, essential oils I forgot I had, and enough electronic power cords to power a small country! Of course, then I had to try and figure out what those cords went to. There are so many different plug in parts and all are shaped a little different! I think I got all of them figured out and wrapped and organized. I even set aside a package with power cords in a tote bag so that it will be ready to go if I ever travel again. I even found a bag with plugs and adaptors for when you travel to foreign countries and I have absolutely NO idea where those came from! LOL
Jan - hope things have gone well at work today. One of the things on my "to do" list for tomorrow is to start gathering my tax documents. I also need to go ahead and schedule an appointment with the CPA that I used last year because they get booked up quickly. I will make the appointment for sometime in late March.
Amy - your flowers are going to be so pretty! Another thing I'm planning to do tomorrow is to pack up my snowman collection. I always leave those out for the month of January but it's time to pack them up. Glad you enjoyed your salad! I have a Zakby's not far from me and I will check that salad out! What are you fixing for tonight? I am going to make some crack slaw and use a hot sausage in it. Tomorrow I'm going to put a pork roast in the crockpot. I'll have some as just regular roast and then take the rest and make BBQ with it. I tired the G Hughes sugar free BBQ sauce but Ii didn't like it nearly as well as the No Sugar added Baby Ray's. That's my favorite!
Liz - yay for having such a sweet time with Michael. Is Isabel doing better with preschool? I am thinking about moving my stationary bike into the bedroom. The treadmill that I ordered from Amazon got lost in transit so I got a refund on that. I just need to measure to make sure there is room for the bike. And I also need to take advantage of the mild temps we are having and get my behind out and start walking again. Surely that would help with the insomnia as well.
Hi and hugs to everyone. Enjoy the rest of your Friday! Murphy

Hi Everyone! I went out early this morning, DD asked me to babysit while she went grocery shopping. I have to say it really is difficult watching the two of them by myself. He wanted to stay in my arms and she wanted me to play with her. I loved being with them but it was a long two and a half hours while DD was out, lol! They are just the cutest though.
Yesterday was another all around AF/OP/Tracked/Biked day, so pleased with that. Sorry no personals, I am just kind of beat this afternoon. Will try to do better tomorrow.

Well, so much for posting early! At least itās still afternoon! DH and I went shopping for a new dishwasher. We decided that instead of a new kitchen remodel, we would just change appliances as needed, and we got the new island. We needed more storage. Iām not one thatās bothered by white AND stainless steel appliances. But we needed a new microwave and dishwasher, so we started with that. Of course, once we start with the new, the rest will look bad. So weāll see how long it takes. š I probably wonāt post tomorrow. Iām going with a friend into Pittsburgh to see My Fair Lady! Iām so excited! Weāre meeting at noon and wonāt be home until around 8 since weāre eating afterwards. Sunday Iām on the organ, and may possibly go to a local womenās choir concert that I used to belong to. Weāll see.
Murphy: Iāve kind of stalled on my decluttering. Iāve got the kitchen countertops cleared though! Even though the groundhog says an early spring, Iāve got lots of time!
Amy: Free cake and almost free books! Thatās a double win! Plus you got rid of the ones you already read! Weāre having a book/puzzle exchange at our womenās meeting Monday night. I hope people remember!
Liz: I knew someoneās husband had messed up with the garbage disposal but couldnāt remember who! I know you enjoyed your time with Michael! Any time with grands is š„°.
Jan: I love your goals for February! I donāt do well with numbers either. Iām doing better with my small goals though! Hope the pizza is good!

Hi friends! My ultrasound results came back. It showed a small mass on my right kidney, it recommended a MRI to see what it is. Iām just waiting for my dr to get back to me. The student supervisor job is finally posted. Iām going to email the head of the supervisors one more time and hope for the best. Iām always so tired when I leave work. I donāt know how the girls who work full time do it! My DB had his knee replaced 2 weeks ago and is doing really good! Iām so happy for him. Iām sorry for lack of personals. Although I have to say Janās post about it being a minefield out there really cracked me up!! Good night my sweet friends!

Good Evening!
Murphy, thanks for starting the post and good to see you! Sounds like a productive day even with lack of sleep! Speaking of cleaning out a drawer, I'm cleaning out my lipsticks...don't even want to count how many I have and not going to include the lipstick I wore on my wedding day. Told DS expect me to look a bit clownish at times.
Jan, definitely looking forward to an early spring. Costco had bulbs and I refused to look at them. Celtics lost but looking at the stats...Celtics went to the line 7 times, Lakers went 26 so 14 points vs 52. This isn't just happening to my team....the NBA so wants the Lakers to win...they gave them the win for the In Season Tournament where each player on the winning team got 1/2 million. Off my soap box, lol. Hope the pizza turned out well. Thinking I should start making pizza from scratch. Enjoy your knitting! Hope your sister can come to visit. Glad you are feeling good about your journey! Remember sometimes detours happen and are part of the journey.
Amy, sounds like a wonderful day! I'm still struggling getting to 10K steps...need to find my motivation. Hope the golf cart has an easy repair. Yay for free cake! I went with a yard service not just because being comfortable with my money, but 110 degrees would probably kill me doing yard work, lol. But I still want to get my hands dirty planting plants. Enjoy your plants.
Liz, hope DD is enjoying her hair (that doesn't sound right) and that you had a wonderful time with Michael. Glad you had a wonderful time with the grands and that you stayed on track!
Cathy, yay for the scale cooperating and that you have sunshine!
GG, enjoy going to with your friend to see MY FAIR LADY! Sounds like a wonderful time! We went through two sets of appliances when we moved into the current house. Wish I had gone with LG....have nothing but trouble with Samsung appliances. Glad someone else has slowed down with decluttering. Like all the C's.
Carole, how are things going?
DS and I just dashed outside, raining, and dragged stuff up towards the house and some into the garage. We knew it was going to rain but it is really windy! Glad I didn't buy plants today. Did go to Costco but just bought from my list except for adding four bottles of Kirkland acetaminophen. It was on sale and I definitely use it. I was a dum dum by not staying ahead of the stingers and once the one set in I can still feel it but know it will pass.
DS is doing better, not 100%. What he describes sounds like old fashion flu. His friend brought over some stuff for him to work on. He could have sent it but I think his friend likes to just hang out at our house and get a home or semi home cooked meal.
Going to make sure all the hatches are batten down...the wind is at 30 MPH. I wanted to fill the bird feeders though two were semi filled...but knew the rain was coming in. Two feeders still had food. There were swarms of grackles today and I really didn't want to feed them. Hopefully they will move on by tomorrow.
Wishing everyone a good night sleep! Hugs, Cindy
