Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: Dryuary and beyond! Or Dampuary to begin! January 1 - February 10 (Lunar New Year)
"I look to 2024 with a renewed commitment to Progress” and “Out the Door in 2024” (thanks Cathy!)
Let’s Begin!
Will this be your year? Embrace 2024 with eyes wide open, with accountability, with not just going along, but being the best you can be. For many January 1 is a repeat of a cycle. We may be happy where we are personally, maybe with a bit of tweaking but there remains a niggling if I could just lose those pounds, if I could eat more cleanly, if I could just commit to excercising, could I just get some decent sleep! So let the tweaking and niggling begin to make this year work for us! It will be an adventure and can only enhance us.
Are you ready for this new challenge? If wavering, no matter, join in and take what works for you. Share, enjoy the bonding. But also ask yourself what is holding you back?
How do we kick off the New Year? For many it is the commitment to healthy eating, no drinking and getting into shape. We want to cleanse ourselves of what may be holding us back from being the person we want to be. However, true cleansing does not mean just ridding the body of toxins. We're exposed to harmful substances all the time; they're in our diet (pesticides, microbes, and mercury, to name a few) and the very air we breathe (think disinfectants, deodorizers, and the gasses released by fresh paint). We can choose to eliminate as many of these as possible. But there is also a Spiritual aspect as well. Toxins bring you down. When we eliminate harmful substances from our diet and eliminate as many as possible from our lives, we will feel rejuvenated from the inside out.
During the holidays we can easily overload on food and alcohol as well as the commercialization of the holiday. We may feel inundated with stress and turn to self medication through food and alcohol, and repeat the cycle the next day. The sense of joy and peace that we seek will not be found.
So here we are on the first day of the NEW YEAR! Where will you be a year from today? Will you still be wondering why you are looking for satisfaction through food and alcohol or are you ready to make a change and cleanse yourself of old habits. Let's take the first 40 days of this year to create new habits, cleanse ourselves of old habits, and become the person we know we can be.
From January 1 through February 10 we are challenging ourselves to go without alcohol and cleanse ourselves of habits that make ourselves feel bloated, anxious, and just overwhelmed. For some alcohol issues cannot be manage on your own and this board is here to support you in getting help. This board has posters at many different stages in the journey. Some know that being AF is the way to go, others hope to be AIM, but we are all conscious of the slippery slope that can lead to AIE. We want to feel empowered, not let toxins control us, but let us control toxins.
You will not be kicked out of the challenge because of a slip but understand why the slip, talk about it. Christmas and New Year's may have given you a freedom to overindulge but don't let that continue.
Anytime is a good time to start, there is no magic with a Monday, or starting with the next day since today is lost....but there is some sort of magic with January 1. We are more determined, more open to admitting to our new year resolution because we are all in it together. The trick is to keep that MOMENTUM going and it is a commitment to forty days!
Let's make our living environment a healthy environment. Face it, no matter how motivated, committed you are, on January 1, having alcohol, junk food, trigger foods, in your kitchen is not going to help. Give it away, dump it, GET RID OF IT! Temptation is going to happen. Don't make it easier to give in. You are only kidding yourself when you say I have it in the house for company, for the kids, the just in case.
Assess your kitchen....ask does this help me or hinder me? DO NOT have a sentimental attachment to alcohol or food.....the stuff will still be out there, it does not magically disappear. Remember, this is your health! This is your LIFE!
Let's get going and get those pounds out the door!
Great success vibes to all!

Good morning all! I was really wiped out after staying with my brother yesterday. I didn't need to do a lot of "caregiving" but it's just so hard to see him like this. Anyway - I hit the bed early and slept hard. Not much planned for today. I have the sheets in the wash and I'll pack the grocery bags for Motel Ministry. Will be back after while. Murphy

What a great way to go into the new Year! Happy New Year!
They delivered the golf cart at about 10:30 yesterday morning, so we took it to the nature trail to walk. It definitely has more power going up the hills. When we got back I got busy cleaning the bathrooms. I may have been hangry b/c I was very grumpy by the time I was finished. Lunch and some couch time helped. The dryer repair guy didn't show up until 3. He took it apart and of course didn't have the parts, so he'll hopefully be back the first of next week. We had homemade Egg McMuffins for dinner and I ate 1/2 of DD's English muffin with some jelly. I went to bed a bit early and slept well other than a disturbing dream around 5am, I got up to pee and then slept past 9!
It's cloudy today and warmer in the upper 40's already. It's not supposed to rain until tomorrow evening and then on Sunday and Monday.
2 pages yesterday!
Jan- Hope you are feeling better today. Glad you could leave early and catch a nap. We're adding 2 days in London on the front end of the trip.
Carole- Hope you can continue to access your work email. Sorry for the frustration over getting the ultrasound scheduled and your work friend running her mouth. Hope today is a better day.
Vicki- WTG co-leading the water class and learning a new arm exercise. Yay for the beautiful sunrise and seeing the skunk. Your salmon dinner sounds good. I agree that it's worth spending the extra $$$ on excursions that you are interested in.
Cindy- Sorry you forgot to hit "Post" and for the ordeal with your new teeth. Glad the elderberry syrup is helping and for getting tickets to the Mavs game. It's good that Ainsley likes friend/girl and she's willing to take care of her.
Murphy- Thanks for getting us started. Sorry it was difficult visiting DB.

M-W Word of the Day
fissile adjective | FISS-ul What It Means Fissile describes materials that are capable of undergoing fission—that is, the process in which the nucleus of a heavy atom is split apart, releasing a large amount of energy. Fissile can also be used to describe something, such as wood or crystals, capable of or prone to being split or divided in the direction of the grain along natural planes. // The wood of most conifer species is fissile, making it much easier to cut than that of sycamore and hornbeam.

Had fun with Rosalie and Rosemary joined us to shop one place then had lunch with us. The restaurant waiter was rather rude not bringing a dish to Rosalie thinking, because she is black, that she was a maid...we were NOT happy with him and will not return to that restaurant in the future. I probably spent more money than I should have BUT found two pair of ankle height boots (booties) for ten dollars a pair. One was faux black and white snakeskin and the other was black with silver studs. I now have SIX pair of booties and wonder when I will wear them all! I also bought a bright blue and a black turtleneck sweater and a shocking pink v-neck sweater for a "pretty in pink" party. In another shop I found two pair of pajamas and some nylons then called a halt.
Today was laundry and errand running and there is more to do but...am going to read a bit more, write a review, and call it a day.

Hi all Just checking in. So after all this time the Covid has finally found me. Just achy and tired, I can taste food, took some ibuprofen, ate a piece of toast to have something in my stomach with the meds and will head back up to bed. I wanted to sit up for a bit, everything gets stiff lying there so long. Oh well, just going to ride it out at home and try to stay away from DH. Will check in when feeling up to it. Jan

It's been a nice morning around here. Did a bit of cleaning and organizing. Got the sheets changed on the bed. I swear if my ship ever comes in, the first thing I will do is hire someone just to change sheets once a week! LOL. I put my coffee pot in the cabinet and got my tea station all set up. I had ordered a tea mug from Amazon that comes with a lid/coaster that you put on while the tea is steeping but it arrived broken. Boo! But I have already put in for a replacement and they didn't even ask for pictures. Did a bit of playing with my makeup which always makes me happy. Gave myself a manicure. Still need to pack the grocery bags but I may wait on that till tomorrow. I even vacuumed the car out and found my sunglasses hiding under the seat.
Cathy - glad you had fun shopping. I wish I didn't have so much fun shopping on Amazon! Your booties sound fabulous!
Amy - so sorry the dryer still isn't fixed! I hope the repair person is able to get to you quickly and get it working. I guess if you have to go to the laundry mat at least you can dry more than one load at a time.
Jan - so sorry your aren't feeling well. This last round of Covid that I had really sapped my energy too. I don't know if it's possible but if you can get some elderberry syrup, I swear it made a difference for me. I mixed it with lemonade and just sipped on it all the time. But do whatever you can to take care of yourself.
Cindy - sorry that the tech messed up your permanent tooth. How quickly do you think they will get the tooth fixed and ready to put in?
Liz - did DD find out anything from the X-ray? Hope you are able to get some rest after taking care of the grands!
GG - Yay for leading the water exercise class! I so hope that the MCare replacement plan I that will be choosing has a Silver Sneakers benefit because I would really like water exercises.
Carole - hope you hear something from your doctor soon. I was thinking that my new doctor had forgotten about making me a referral to a new gyn because I hadn't heard anything but I got a call this morning and got that scheduled. So I'm scheduled for my mammogram, bone scan and GYN. I will be set for the year!
Yesterday was hard with DB. Like I said, it wasn't hard because of caregiving, he slept most of the time. It was just heartbreaking to see him like this. This is a man who built homes and crawled all over roofs and scaffolding for a living all his life. Now he has to have a walker and just shuffles. But my SIL was SO happy to have a break. She went to the drug store and grocery store. Their apartment is built on to her brothers house and he is gone all week at work. So she spent time cleaning his house and seemed so happy. I'm just happy that I can help out a little.
Hope everyone has a great rest of your Friday! Murphy
