Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: Dryuary and beyond! Or Dampuary to begin! January 1 - February 10 (Lunar New Year)
"I look to 2024 with a renewed commitment to Progressā and āOut the Door in 2024ā (thanks Cathy!)
Letās Begin!
Will this be your year? Embrace 2024 with eyes wide open, with accountability, with not just going along, but being the best you can be. For many January 1 is a repeat of a cycle. We may be happy where we are personally, maybe with a bit of tweaking but there remains a niggling if I could just lose those pounds, if I could eat more cleanly, if I could just commit to excercising, could I just get some decent sleep! So let the tweaking and niggling begin to make this year work for us! It will be an adventure and can only enhance us.
Are you ready for this new challenge? If wavering, no matter, join in and take what works for you. Share, enjoy the bonding. But also ask yourself what is holding you back?
How do we kick off the New Year? For many it is the commitment to healthy eating, no drinking and getting into shape. We want to cleanse ourselves of what may be holding us back from being the person we want to be. However, true cleansing does not mean just ridding the body of toxins. We're exposed to harmful substances all the time; they're in our diet (pesticides, microbes, and mercury, to name a few) and the very air we breathe (think disinfectants, deodorizers, and the gasses released by fresh paint). We can choose to eliminate as many of these as possible. But there is also a Spiritual aspect as well. Toxins bring you down. When we eliminate harmful substances from our diet and eliminate as many as possible from our lives, we will feel rejuvenated from the inside out.
During the holidays we can easily overload on food and alcohol as well as the commercialization of the holiday. We may feel inundated with stress and turn to self medication through food and alcohol, and repeat the cycle the next day. The sense of joy and peace that we seek will not be found.
So here we are on the first day of the NEW YEAR! Where will you be a year from today? Will you still be wondering why you are looking for satisfaction through food and alcohol or are you ready to make a change and cleanse yourself of old habits. Let's take the first 40 days of this year to create new habits, cleanse ourselves of old habits, and become the person we know we can be.
From January 1 through February 10 we are challenging ourselves to go without alcohol and cleanse ourselves of habits that make ourselves feel bloated, anxious, and just overwhelmed. For some alcohol issues cannot be manage on your own and this board is here to support you in getting help. This board has posters at many different stages in the journey. Some know that being AF is the way to go, others hope to be AIM, but we are all conscious of the slippery slope that can lead to AIE. We want to feel empowered, not let toxins control us, but let us control toxins.
You will not be kicked out of the challenge because of a slip but understand why the slip, talk about it. Christmas and New Year's may have given you a freedom to overindulge but don't let that continue.
Anytime is a good time to start, there is no magic with a Monday, or starting with the next day since today is lost....but there is some sort of magic with January 1. We are more determined, more open to admitting to our new year resolution because we are all in it together. The trick is to keep that MOMENTUM going and it is a commitment to forty days!
Let's make our living environment a healthy environment. Face it, no matter how motivated, committed you are, on January 1, having alcohol, junk food, trigger foods, in your kitchen is not going to help. Give it away, dump it, GET RID OF IT! Temptation is going to happen. Don't make it easier to give in. You are only kidding yourself when you say I have it in the house for company, for the kids, the just in case.
Assess your kitchen....ask does this help me or hinder me? DO NOT have a sentimental attachment to alcohol or food.....the stuff will still be out there, it does not magically disappear. Remember, this is your health! This is your LIFE!
Let's get going and get those pounds out the door!
Great success vibes to all!

Good morning all! Had a great nights sleep. I'm not sure I moved during the night! Not a lot planned for today. I didn't get the grocery bags packed yesterday so that the plan for today. I also need to clean out a kitchen cabinet. I realized that I have a canister of baking mix that has to be several years old so that needs to go! Just some general cleaning up! Have a great morning and I'll be back. Murphy

I swept with the broom in the corners and under low furniture then ran the robot vacuum yesterday morning. We drove to the lake to walk, sounds like spring with all the birds tweeting. We went to Ingles for groceries, they've been remodeling and it looks really nice. When we got home I had lunch and couch time. I made an angel food cake with pineapple for dessert. We had chicken enchiladas, rice, broccoli for dinner. After dinner DH, DS, DD, & I played 2 games of 99. We watched the last episode of season 1 of Poker Face and then a few episodes of Not Dead Yet. I stayed up a bit late with the kids, but then slept well.
There's a little sun this morning and it's in the mid-50's. Rain is coming.
Cathy- Glad you had fun with friends, sorry about the rude waiter. Yay for the 2 pairs of booties.
Jan- Sorry about the Covid. Hope it passes uneventfully.
Murphy- Thanks for getting us started. WTG for the cleaning and organizing, playing with makeup, manicure, cleaning your car, finding your sunglasses. It was good that you could give DSIL a break. Glad you slept well.

Good morning all. I'm currently upright at least and having some coffee, didn't even do that yesterday. Looking at my numbers, it's interesting that it said I burned so many calories, but I think that is because my heart rate has been up, I woke up in a big sweat least night and just all those little guys inside trying to burn out the virus. My resting heart rate has been around 69 for the last weeks and today and yesterday it was 74 and 75. At least it burned up a few calories, or I just sweat out those pounds yesterday. I know it's not a true number but it was a good way to finish the challenge. With how I feel, I'll take it. It says all told yesterday I slept 15+ hours, guess one's body knows what it's supposed to do. I did take a sudafed last night to clear up the sniffles so I could breath and that helped me stay asleep I think. If I can convince DH to do a grocery run a bit later I may see if he can find some of Murphy's "Miracle" juice Can't hurt. Just being up this long and checking in is better than I was yesterday, maybe today I can try to read or knit a bit. I couldn't even focus yesterday. whaa whaa, enough about me, hope you all had a nice Friday and are planning a fun weekend. I know we'll be watching the game tomorrow. I feel badly as DH has really had to fend for himself as I am just not hungry, say what?! Last night he went out and got himself a pizza, not sure what tonight will bring. The thing that tastes the best to me are Ritz and those points add up quickly! Guess I can show myself some grace, I have the weeklies and the points. Gray again here this morning. I know they are having the polar plunge over at the park today at some point, yikes. But this is probably the warmest it's been for it in years. Have a good one, I will check in again later. Jan Murphy A good night's sleep is a great thing, why is it so hard to be consistent! GL on cleaning out your pantry, and packing motel bags today. Thanks for starting us. Cathy That scale will go back this week. I was flabbergasted at what you said about your friend Rosalie being treated like the help! Do many people there have maids, and would they be taking them to an expensive lunch if they did? The world has not moved forward much in the last couple hundred years. You will have to plan some fun outings to wear all your different booties. Carole Sorry the Dr office has not been helpful. They stress you out and then don't give you any help. Hope you hear something soon. Amy Glad the golf cart is perked up and has more power for the hills. Jealous that you are starting to see spring by you. I think right when we think it really is going to stay warmer here, we are going to get hit with another big storm. And then they had the first ever in February tornadoes in Wisconsin the other day! What did you do with the kids last night? Did you say that on your trip you won't take you weight meds, is it supposed to be fine to skip now and then? Sure you will figure it out. Waving hi. Think I need to eat a little something to balance the coffee this morning. Happy Lunar New Year! Wish I felt like eating some good Chinese food.

M-W Word of the Day
MacGuffin noun | muh-GUFF-in What It Means A MacGuffin is an object, event, or character in a film or story that serves to set and keep the plot in motion despite usually lacking intrinsic importance. // The missing document is the MacGuffin that brings the two main characters together, but the real story centers on their tumultuous relationship.

Jan- Hang in there. Interesting that you burned more calories with the fever and elevated heart rate. I talked to the NP at HenryMeds about the trip, she said to take it right before we go and then start again when we get back rather than hassle with trying to keep it refrigerated. As it turns out we are leaving on a Thursday, so I'll just delay it by a couple of days on the front end.

Good morning! Except for being AIM (measured the A), my eating was OP. DD's x-ray came back and her lungs are clear; she must have pulled a muscle from coughing so hard. They did give her codeine for the cough, the prednisone did nothing for her Asthma. She is worn out from coughing so much. So far, some of Isabel's blood tests have, come back and unfortunately her iron is extremely low again and they have started her back on the liquid iron supplement. I worry that if it is not the celiac causing the iron deficiency, what the hell can it be. DD has been so vigilant making sure that Isabel has been gluten free. She is waiting for the rest of the results so that the specialist from the Children's hospital calls her. They had instructed her to stop the iron for 4-6 months to see if it was the celiac causing the deficiency, after seeing this we now know that it is not. After having a child with cancer, it never leaves my mind and it scares the sh#t out of me. But in Isabel's case, she has not had any weight loss, and I wish I could bottle her energy, thank God. And she might just be anemic which has run in our family, I guess we just have to wait and see.
I was thinking tomorrow was the last day of this challenge and didn't weigh myself, will weigh in tomorrow morning before I have two cups of coffee and breakfast, every little bit helps, lol! It is supposed to be near 60 today so I am debating as to whether or not I want to go out because I have been out two days in a row, and of course when I go out, I spend more $$$! I might just be lazy and knit all day since I have not been putting much time in on it.
Murphy~ Thanks for getting us started! It was so wonderful that you were able to give DSIL a break and also that you were able to spend time with your DB. I can really understand that you were exhausted, seeing him like that had to be emotionally draining. But I bet you he must have enjoyed having your company!
Amy~ Woohoo, you really rocked this challenge, I see the 160s in your very near future!!!
Jan~ Yay for the weight loss, no matter how you got it!!! Sorry about getting Covid though! Hope you feel well enough to get some knitting or reading done to pass the time. How long is the requirement to stay out of work once you are starting to feel better?
Cindy~ So sorry about the dental fiasco and the pain you are having from it!
Carole~ I think I missed it, why did you need to have an ultrasound? I hope everything is ok, and I would really be disgusted with the doctor or his/her office not getting back to you with results.
Vicki~ WTG leading at the water aerobics. Glad the skunk scooted off to the woods, lol!
Cathy~ That was so awful how Rosalie was treated at the restaurant. Did they finally serve her? Yay for the shopping spree, I guess you are a shoe person, lol! Love booties but can't wear because of my ankles being so lumpy and huge. The weirdest part is that it is not from fluid, just chunky, sigh. That's another reason why I don't wear dresses or skirts because of my legs and ankles.
Hope everyone has a fabulous Saturday!!!

Hi girls, just came downstairs again. Tried to go back to sleep @ 10 because felling tired, between the cats hogging the bed and the morning caffeine my head just swirled around with thoughts so I figured I'd get back up. Maybe today I will end up with more awake hours than asleep hours. The cars are starting to park out front and I'm seeing people walking by with their big bags, warm clothes I'm guessing for after jumping in the lake. At least the sun is out now. I cracked open the bedroom window a bit more up by where I sleep, was nice to have some fresh air coming in and supposed to help clear out the bad germs some from the coughing. Guess I'll believe anything DH has some basketball on now, not much else to choose from. I'm going to try to do 3-4 rows on my knitting, just going around in a circle. Have a good day all. Jan Liz 60's sounds lovely, I would go out just to feel the warmth. Hope the meds help with DD cough, and they can find out why Isabel is having low iron all the time. I'm supposed to stay home 5 days, which would be Tuesday but I may push it til Wednesday depending on how I feel. Now not sure if I should wear a mask for a bit or not. I'm curious to hear what the other girl was out for, but maybe she didn't even test and just went back. Enjoy your day whatever you decide to do. Amy Did you get out before the rain came? I agree, you will be in the 160's before your trip and maybe even a NEW decade How is DD doing on his eating plan, will he check his sugars now or just wait for Dr appts? Cindy What did you decide on the GF coming over tomorrow? Is there a reason she'd have to take care of Ainsley? or just being prepared. Going to sit and veg a bit

It's been a good day. Got my kitchen cabinet cleaned out and I got the grocery bags packed for tomorrow. I think I'm done with everything on my list for the day. It has started raining again and I've got a small pot of chili simmering. That will be meals for a couple of days at least. DB still isn't eating much at all so I decided when I go this week, I'm going to make him some chicken and dumplings. DSIL can't eat meat so I'll make her a pot of vegetable soup. DB has Humana MCRP and they actually provided some microwave meals for him but I heated one up when I was there Thursday and it was just kind of like hospital food. So maybe this will entice him to eat a few more bites. DSIL developed that allergy to meat proteins after she had Lyme disease.
Amy - the birds were singing around here prior to the rain starting. I think it's supposed to rain for several days and then cool down some so I think this was just a spring teaser!
Jan - listen to your body and rest, rest, REST! I don't know if DH will be able to find elderberry syrup at the store but if not, there are teas and gummies that he should be able to find. I don't think it could hurt!
Liz - I'm glad DD's X-ray was negative for anything serious. I can only imagine the fear and worry over Isabel's iron level. Praying that they find an answer quickly! I'm with you on the chunky ankles! I always said that God must have stood me up before I got good and dry and that's why everything below the waist is a size larger! I have to get boots with the wide calf. At least they are more available now than they were when I was young.
Cindy - I'm assuming you will get us started tomorrow with a new challenge? I'll hold off starting us before church in the morning. Thank you for always coming up with great challenges!
Cathy - that is just really horrible how Rosalie was treated at the restaurant. I can only imagine how she must have felt. Glad you won't be going there any more!
Hi and hugs to everyone! Have a great afternoon! Murphy

Hi girls. Iām going to miss this spring weather! I walked in the house when DD called, and just got back from my walk in the woods. My girl came and cut my hair and then I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out my new prescription plan. I need all new scripts since itās a different company. I pay $9 a month for my prescription plan, and most of my meds are covered, except for my thyroid. Then I was checking with Goodrx and Singlecare. That really brings it down! I was thinking our challenge ended on Valentines Day. I lost 3 pounds this time. Iām sitting at 172. Those 60ās are so close! Tomorrow after church Iām going up after Rylee! She doesnāt have school on Monday, and DSIL does, so grandma gets her! DH saved the boxes from the appliances, so thatās should be fun! She can make a house with 2 rooms if she wants! I got her a pass to go swimming at the Y, and Iām sure we will have to stop in to see Jane The Library cat.
Jan: Iām sorry you ended up with Covid!! Rest!! And find good movies to watch! Sorry it had to happen during this peek of spring! Yay for the perk of weight loss!
Murphy: Iāve probably asked this before. How far away is DB? I know it canāt be too far. Iām sure they BOTH will enjoy your meals.
Liz: Iām glad the drs are keeping up on whatās going on with Isabel. At least it doesnāt seem to visibly affect her! Iāve been loving the warm temps and sunshine! Of course theyāre calling for snow on Monday into Tuesday! Crazy!
Amy: I love that you make a dessert each Friday when ds comes! Our daffodils are only up about an inch. The deer ate all my crocuses!
Cathy: I just canāt even imagine someone acting like that towards your friend! How sad for her.
Cindy: DD will be 37. Iāll just remember they are close in age! š
