Day 11 –Differentiate Between Hunger, Desire, and Cravings
This is a biggie!!!
Hunger: when you have fasted for several hours, and your stomach is empty.
Desire to Eat: not being particularly hungry but eating because food is around.
Craving: physiological and emotionally intense urge to eat.
Beck reminds us that it can take up to 20 minutes for our satiety to reach our brains from our stomach.
Beck wants us to monitor these feelings for a day before, during, and after we eat.
Tell us about your experience with hunger, desire to eat, and cravings and how you handle them.

I don't like being hungry and will often have a small snack if I get hungry. There are times when I do wait until my next scheduled meal or snack. I often recognize I have a desire to eat and am able to let it go. I still get cravings, but at least not wild ones like I was getting. Those I worked through mentally, or sometimes gave in with a single serving of the item.

Hunger makes me cranky, gives me a headache, makes my stomach hurt, is not something I want to do intentionally and doubt that anyone really does.

I've learned a lot about my body with Beck re: hunger. It doesn't bother me that much at times. At other times, It is very insistent and I find it difficult to tolerate. I haven't yet figured out the difference. But I used to be concerned about not eating at certain times when I was hungry and I don't worry about that any more. I find two meals a day are sufficient for me provided I eat enough at both meals to last till the next one. If I eat too little or insufficient calories (just vegetables for example in soup and salad), I get hungry too soon.

This is a biggie for me. I still have trouble figuring all of this out. I sometimes feel at times that I'm intensely hungry, that I absolutely must eat. I feel it in my stomach. But then I find that if I can wait it out a little, then it goes away, at least somewhat. But sometimes it doesn't go away and I must eat. Maybe that's the trick - wait it out for a while and see if it goes away. The last couple of morning, I found that drinking water satisfied me and I didn't have to eat until later in the day.
I'm not going to do this exercise of monitoring for a day, because I recently journaled about it for 100 days, ending about a month ago. It did help my awareness somewhat, and helped me to eat less, but I still find it somewhat confusing.

Being hungry doesn't bother me. I only overeat for emotional reasons. Which I've worked on with Beck and meditation.

Desire to Eat: not being particularly hungry but eating because food is around.
Craving: physiological and emotionally intense urge to eat.
I know when I'm hungry and when I'm not, but I just give in too easily! I will have a desire to eat when I see food on TV/internet, etc.
I also just eat when I'm bore or trying to escape emotions. I know I'm not hungry- but I still do it.
Definitely something I'm working on
