Day 12 – Practice Hunger Tolerance
Today is the day (if you want to) you skip lunch, track your hunger discomfort scale, and see how well you tolerate hunger. Beck explains that hunger may seem intense, but those feelings often go away and become tolerable.
Beck maintains that a lot of unnecessary eating is done because people are afraid of hunger when you don’t need to be afraid of hunger.
Are you going to do this today or another day? If so, let us know the result. If you have done it previously let us know how you did when you did it. If you are not going to do it let us know why.

I won't be doing this exercise this time. I've done it twice before with one time resulting in me not being fit for human companionship, and the second time I was okay, just didn't like being hungry. When I did it, I made up a list of things to do to keep myself busy and my thoughts off food. I don't like being hungry so sometimes I eat when I feel hunger instead of waiting until my next meal or snack, but other times I'll put up with the hunger for a while.

I’ve done this before and can distinguish hunger from unnecessary eating so I won’t be doing this exercise tomorrow.

I won't be doing this exercise. I've done it a couple of times before, and I've been able to deal with the hunger. I also often do intermittent fasting, when I don't eat from after dinner until lunch 14-16 hours later, so I practice ways to deal with hunger. And often when I'm not doing intermittent fasting, I try to stretch out my time between meals without snacking in between meals, and I deal ok with the hunger. My usual way to deal with the hunger at these times is to drink water and to distract myself by engaging in various activities. This frequently helps me to not only not notice the hunger, but to actually stop feeling hungry.

I'm not doing this, right now. I have a late meeting and wouldn't be able to eat dinner until about 9:00.
If I don't eat anything until then I would be a bear and probably make very bad decisions- just eat everything and anything.
Instead I packed lots of fruits/veggies and a little bit of deli ham and cheese- no bread. My lunches have gotten a little healthier the past couple of weeks. And I'm really trying to watch my snacking.

I've done this both voluntarily in previous Beck rounds and involuntarily due to circumstances so I won't be doing it today.

Yeah, I average around 16 hours between dinner and breakfast, so that's a long enough break for me. I have always had good hunger tolerance. Mr. Lani has been doing intermittent fasting, one meal at 8AM and dinner at 4PM. It's not every day. I'm not sure what his exact schedule is. Kitty is getting aggravated that DH is eating before him. Kitty eats at 5:00.

lani, I've heard of intermittent fasting. Does he see a benefit to it? If you have 16 hour before dinner and breakfast does that count as intermittent fasting too? I've seen a lot about it on Pinterest and things like that. But I didn't know what the real benefit was and why someone would choose to do it. Can you do some days on and some days not? Or is it one of those things where if you break it once you've lost all progress and have to start at square one again? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm curious and never met someone who actually does it. Just have seen the advertisements on the internetc.

I eat around 12 noon and again at 6-ish pm. I try not to eat between meals and after 7 pm.
Right now I'm not following this because I need to take a med in the am after food so I'm eating three meals but usually I only have the two.
It is a mixed bag in terms of whether it is beneficial or not. It doesn't work for people whose blood sugar drops if they don't eat. But it also reduces the hours in which one can consume calories so it can reduce calorie count. There is some evidence (not big studies though) that show that giving the gut a break helps it.
I do it because I'm never hungry in the am anyway and it reduces the hours in which I can eat calories.
