I live in NYS. The blue bird is our state bird. I have a friend who lives in Maine and she has bluebirds on her property. I have never seen a Blue Bird here on Long Island or in any of the boroughs of NYC.
What is your state bird and do you actually have them where you live? Just wondering.

Robins are usually the first to show up. I haven't seen any yet. When I do see one I will know Spring has sprung. I'm glad your husband saw one. That means they are on their way to Long Island too.

I'm in Texas. The Mockingbird is our state bird and I have 2 that live in my yard. I see others frequently. They are very territorial. One of the ones in my yard pesters our squirrels and neighbor cats but dive bombing them when they walk in the yard.

I live in NYS. The blue bird is our state bird. I have a friend who lives in Maine and she has bluebirds on her property. I have never seen a Blue Bird here on Long Island or in any of the boroughs of NYC. I live in the Hudson Valley and see bluebirds often. They like hanging out in open areas and sitting on our fences and fence posts. The males are a brilliant blue with a little orange on their chests and the females are more drab in color. I watched a pair of them outside my kitchen window just the other day.

I'm from North Dakota and our state bird is the meadowlark. I haven't seen any yet but they'll come a little later in the spring and hang around all summer then leave in the fall. That's how I know spring has arrived. We often get robins earlier, but they are so erratic about when they arrive that I don't consider them an indication of spring. I've even seen some here in late February hopping around in the snow.
I have some bluebird houses hanging on my fence line in different places around my yard. I rarely get a bluebird, but most of then are occupied by tree swallows which often hang around with the bluebirds. There is a marina a couple miles away from my place and they have put up bluebird houses all along their fence line and fence lines of the neighbors. Each they have a celebration and invite people to come there, do a bluebird walk along where they have put bluebird houses and will serve Juneberry pie and ice cream to all who come to the celebration. Juneberries are also called Saskatoon berries and they grow wild out in our coulees. The marina specializes in making Juneberry pies for their customers from wherever.
I also one time saw what I'm sure was a mocking bird in my yard. He hung around for a few days and then disappeared. He must have been way off track in his winter journey. They don't usually live in my area so I rarely see any.

New Jersey: Eastern Goldfinch
They aren't plentiful in our suburban location but we've had a pair that love my blue butterfly bush.
