Ann, I heard rave reviews about the Gershwin event.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is my film class and we will be going over MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON. I cried with this one. I want to rewatch it, if possible, before class. The woman who started the film class is leading the discussion with her husband and I am sure it will be a good one.

Has anyone else been watching CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM? I enjoyed the final episode of the final season last night. I found it fitting, reflective of the whole series and of SEINFELD as well.

I am watching TURNING POINT: THE COLD WAR AND THE BOMB on Netflix. It is a nine-part series that places the development of the bomb in context. I think it does an excellent job.

My next film class movie is THE FANTASTIC MR FOX. It is an animated film directed by Wes Anderson and based on a story by Roald Dahl. It has an impressive cast, including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, and Owen Wilson. I look forward to watching it again.

Great film class today! We are studying animation and discussed FANTASTIC MR FOX. Directed by Wes Anderson, with the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, etc., it is based on a Roald Dahl short story and is, like all Wes Anderson films (IMHO), a gem.
I remember reading books by Roald Dahl to my elementary school students and, later, to my children. JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, etc. One of my favorite Roald Dahl tales was written for Alfred Hitchcock's TV show, LAMB FOR THE SLAUGHTER.

Whoops, almost forgot. There is a nationwide Studio Ghibli movie fest at movie theaters across the country. Ghibli is the most famous producer of Animé. From 4/27-5/1 they are doing SPIRITED AWAY. Here is a link to the schedule, in case you are interested. gkids.com/ghiblifest/I also want to see DUNE: PART 2. It should come to Max next month. Would prefer to see it in the movie theaters, but am not sure I will make it.

I remember that one. Pretty clever. I think I only read the story.

Gail in SC, I got 4 out of 5. Missed the Julia Child one. I've read and seen all except for Gandhi and the Julia Child. Caveat: I've bogged down on American Prometheus, but I will finish it. I'm at the point where he is at Princeton in the late 40s.

AMERICAN PROMETHEUS is fascinating but very slow going, Lani.
I finished the MANHUNT series. I found it well-done. This is a very divisive time for America, but here was another.
Still into the series on Franklin and the one on the US and the bomb. Good stuff out there!

It moved right along for quite some time. My problem is I get distracted by some video production (Ripley, Shogun, etc.) and I get the irresistible impulse to read the book. And I always have the books. See, the phrase "irresistible impulse" makes me want to see Anatomy of a Murder again! And I also have the book. This is in the Movies thread when it really should be in the Reading one.(?) But these things of which we post are in both formats.

I face the same dilemmas. True: movies and films...not enough time to do it all.
I am thoroughly enjoying BEING MARY TYLER MOORE, a documentary on Prime. I always admired MTM's works; THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, ORDINARY PEOPLE, etc. This show is giving me more reasons to do so.

Our next film class film is POPEYE, the one starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. Just watched some clips from it. Very cute. Also saw a short documentary. Did you know Popeye is based on a real man? News to me.
