Oh my, how did April arrive so soon? What have you all seen lately? Please share.
I started watching the 3 BODY PROBLEM series on Netflix. It is science fiction, which I enjoy. It is by the people involved with GAME OF THRONES. The cinematography is excellent and I am into it. I started watching it yesterday, after having had very little sleep and will rewatch that episode.
Also saw a two-part documentary on Steve Martin on Apple TV+. I think Martin is unique. He can be very silly, but you know there is a deep intelligence there. He has done many things: written books and plays, been a magician, plays the banjo, has acted, and done stand-up. Like many comedians, he has gone through difficult emotional periods. At this point in his life he is a loving husband and dad and is creating a series of cartoons to depict his career. I liked this but know his sense of humor is not for everyone.

Probably not the right place to ask it, but I was looking at a map of the solar eclipse and expected cloud coverage. Our cloud coverage will not be too bad, but the sun will only be 70% eclipsed here. Ann, your area looks good on all counts. How about the rest of you? Any plans for watching the eclipse?

I always forget to get the glasses in time. Then I'm afraid I'll get counterfeits from Amazon if I try for them at the last minute. I will probably do the old pinhole in the cardboard trick. I have been meaning to check out 3 BODY PROBLEM. Thanks for the reminder.

Gail: Steve and a friend are going to the site in Maine which is supposed to be one of the best places to see the eclipse. I'll go out to dinner with the Steve's companion's wife after we get glasses from the library and go to the elementary school field to watch it. I'm expecting it to be quite the fun party without the travel!

Surprisinglin here in Tampa, we expect to see about 60% occultation, which is still pretty good according to Jose Cotayo, an education specialist at MOSI He said it will look like the moon has taken a bite out of the sun. But basically what's happening, is the moon itself, as it orbits the Earth, it's casting a shadow.
Thinking we would have no way to view any of it, I did not get the solar eclipse glasses. I will be playing Mahjong indoors with friends on Monday. I have warned Mike not to be outside during the eclipse.

Re the eclipse, the NYT recommended some special glasses for the eclipse and I ordered one of them early this morning. I have Prime, so they will be here tomorrow.
I went to a talk on antisemitism today. It was pretty good, though I wish we had spent more time on things we can all do to stem it. The speaker did give us some good hints about how to respond to it when talking with someone. She recommended we watch THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST, streaming on PBS. I shall start it tonight.

I saw a wonderful animated film for my next film class, MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON. I saw it on Netflix, but it is widely available. I had never heard of this one before.
It is about Marcel, who is a shell with a face and legs. The character was created by a couple (no longer together). It started on TikTok (or some other social media site) and was followed by MANY. This film is full length and is a delight. It was easy to suspend my disbelief. If you liked WALL-E, I think you will love this one.

I am taking a film class at our local branch of USC. Today we watched an extraordinary documentary film focused on a Turkish woman in an isolated mountain area of Macedonia who raises bees for a living. Ann, you might enjoy it. She lives under difficult conditions, taking care of her aging mother by herself. Yet throughout she exhibits dignity and kindness.
It is free if you have Prime and can be rented on Apple.

THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST, It was excellent, as is every Ken Burns' film. Disturbing but not surprising. TOKYO VICE wrapped up. The ending was a little pat, but they had so many plot points to resolve quickly. I did enjoy that series.

Last night we watched THE FORGER which was recommended on this thread by Ann, I think. If not, thanks to whomever recommended it. We really liked it. I do not know why it got bad reviews and that I had not heard of it till mentioned here.

I watched most of the first episode of RIPLEY on NetFlix as it had such stellar reviews. The cinematography is outstanding, but can't get involved with the actors. The cat is good. All it's doing is making me pick up the book again.
I saw ZONE OF INTEREST yesterday. So well done, so chilling.
Started 3 BODY PROBLEM. I'm enjoying it, but I'm not sure if I will finish it.

Funny, Lani, I just watched ZONE OF INTEREST too. Totally agree...well-done and chilling. It is about the family of Rudolf Höss, living just beyond the walls of Auschwitz. You never see what is going on there, but the sounds from the camp are constant. The little you do see, like the fires burning, are shattering. As one reviewer said, "this is about what we don’t see — and what we choose not to see. The horror is unseen but underlying, and all the more arresting because of it."

Gail: Thanks for the documentary recommendation. I have noted it.
We have not been watching anything lately except a little news. Our power was our and, although we have a generator, we had no internet so no television and very little iphone use. It is AMAZING how much we both got done during that time. I'm trying to discipline my phone use. I don't know ho others do it. I'm not even on Facebook!....that would put me over the edge!
I did see the Eclipse, or most of it, at the elemetary school field. A lot of people came and it was interesting and fun.

Jealous, Ann. I had a class today and on the way stopped and looked at the sun through my eclipse glasses. Amazing what I did see! I want to travel to see the next full one in two years in Europe.

Gail: DH is trying to talk me into going to the eclipse in Europe in two years, as well. He is having a great time in Northern Maine with a friend of ours. They said the traffic was the worst they've ever seen anywhere and DH used to commute into Boston, so he knows traffic!
I watched Elton John and Bernie Taupin receive the Gershwin award last night. I LOVED it. The music was remarkable. You can get it streaming on PBS and I'll bet it has a lot of repeats. Watch the audience. At one point, Nancy Pewlosi was on her feet rocking!
