Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: CARING April 1 - May 31
“Your body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care" - Buddha
This challenge is about caring about and for yourself. So often we get caught up in taking care of everyone else that we don’t give ourselves the care we need. Or we give up caring about ourselves. A variety of reasons and for no reason, it just happens. The hard part is to recognize it and once you do, it is hard to explain because very few want to acknowledge it. You get kudos for taking care of others, not so much for taking of yourself. Not caring about yourself can leave an emptiness that you may try to fill with food and alcohol. The emptiness remains, just stuffed down. We want and need more for ourselves. So let’s begin!
Treat yourself the way you’d treat someone you love.
Love yourself first and the rest will follow.
Focus on health and well being
So how do you begin to care about yourself?
Eating fruits and vegetables sounds like a plan. So does drinking water!!
Walking up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Your heart will thank you.
If you don’t want to be AF then restrict the amount and limit the days you will allow yourself a drink. But remember if 10 is not enough, one is too many.
Start with baby steps. Making too many changes at once can be discouraging so start small. Have you been slacking on flossing daily? Then start making it a ritual. Do you drink soda for energy? Start cutting back by one.
Treat yourself to something you enjoy. Buying the store brand face cream will sit on the counter. If you have a favorite, budget it in as a necessity….better than buying alcohol! Maybe getting a manicure or pedicure is important to you yet you deny it for yourself. Ask yourself why.
Make a list of indulgences that aren’t food or alcohol and start sprinkling them into your life.
Ask for what you need. Too many times we get into a funk and we don’t ask for help. You are loved and we want to help each other.
Curb all the justification. Sometimes you just have to do something because you want to do it. You don’t have to explain yourself!
Think of your successes….add three things that went well today to your daily journal. What?? you aren’t journaling? Journaling is caring!
LET THE CARING BEGIN!!

I talked to my brother a bit before we hit the road yesterday morning around 8:30. There was some traffic around Indianapolis, but not too bad considering it was still rush hour. It was mostly overcast, which is good driving conditions. We stopped at Biscuit Belly in Louisville for breakfast/lunch. I got my usual chicken, egg and gravy sandwich, but only ate about half of it. We hit traffic snarls here and there and some light rain in the afternoon, but nothing too bad until the mountains in TN where an accident with a travel trailer had both northbound and southbound traffic at a standstill for about 30 minutes. We were going to stop at the new Varsity close to home to pick up something for dinner, but neither of us were that hungry and we just wanted to get home. We got home around 8, unloaded the car, bonded with the cats and DD. I scrambled some eggs for both of us, watched a bit of TV, then went to bed. I slept really well, good to be back in my own bed.
It's gloomy this morning, but I don't think it's supposed to rain until this afternoon. The bird feeders are all empty, need to fill those and put out new hummingbird nectar. The scale is pretty much the same as when we left, so yay for that!
Jan- WTG steps 10/11, stretches, blue dot, AF 100+!, scheduling eye exam. The Art Expo in Chicago sounds fun. Glad you were home early yesterday, sorry for more days to work but yay for the $$$. I didn't bring home any rhubarb, just didn't get back out to pick it.
Vicki- Yay for a beautiful day and for Jack getting to play. Sorry about the passing of your church member. Hope your headache is gone.
Cindy- Sorry about the strong storms, septic and A/C issues, and the flooding that is delaying repairs. Yesterday felt like Sunday to me. Did you get to view the eclipse?
Carole- Hope today is a BOT day.
Cathy- Yay for leftovers and newly harvested fava beans. Enjoy reading whatever books you decide on and Friday's trip with friends.

What It Means
A vicarious emotion or experience is one felt by watching, hearing about, or reading about someone else rather than by doing something yourself.

Hi Amy and all that follow!
We are having another rain storm that should last through the afternoon. The septic system light is still on though toilets can be flushed without problem....now to watch how much rain will settle above ground. Fingers crossed none! And here comes the thunder!
Staying home, knee/leg is more achy today so enforced rest.
Amy, yes we did see the eclipse. Started looking for the sun a bit earlier but all was cloudy. Thankfully before the event began the clouds cleared and we had a wonderful experience watching. Neighbors were out and cheering when it became the total eclipse. It created an amazing darkness that reminded when a tornado warning is issued. The temp dropped a bit also. Then the sun was back. Loved the photos you shared and liked visualizing you walking the farm while checking at different points. We were in the driveway. Once done I could hear neighbors praising God.
Yay for a safe travel home and only a 30 minute delay. Glad you were able to sleep well.
Murphy, hope all is going well.
Jan, $$$ wil make the work time go by fast! The trip to Chicago sounds like a wonderful time...I would probably be coming home with art pieces. As so many can say, cataract surgery is easy and worth it.
Vicki, hope you are feeling better and you and DH can go out to celebrate his birthday. Again, glad Jack can play.
Carole, hope you are having a BOTFR day! Does Ty and Lexie want to go to Florida for vacation?
Cathy, glad you can get together with friends on Friday. Fava Beans always makes me think of "Silence of the Lambs" served with a nice Chianti.
Hi Liz! How are things going?
Rain is suppose to last through 6 pm. Then the wind is suppose to kick in though it is really windy now. The birds will just have to wait!
Hope everyone is having a wonderful day!
Hugs, Cindy

Good morning all. Going to be a nice day in the mid 60’s. See what I decide to do with that nice weather this afternoon. We will leave here in the next 1/2 hour to drop off the van. Then I’ll bring DH home and head over to work to do my filing. Should be done before 11 for sure. Afterwards I’m just going to drive over to the Eye place and see if I can make an appt or if I have one today at 4:30. At some point we’ll need to go back and get the van, just kind of a running around type day. I just went out a bit ago to discourage a mama duck from snooping around in our front yard. I don’t want her laying eggs in the front flower bed and then having to worry about baby ducklings with the cats outside. Need to find something in the freezer we can have for dinner. We do have some LO stroganoff but most everything else gotten eaten up or tossed for garbage day. Not too many things to throw out this week, which is doing better on using things up for us. Hate wasting so much food. Guess I better get moving so we can switch the cars around and still have some breakfast before we go. I will check back later. Jan Home from all the errands now, but may have to take another trip out to find some dinner as nothing came out of the freezer We took the van in, then decided to go to breakfast, which was nice. I brought DH home and headed to the office. Filing took about 1 1/2 hours, I also helped a customer and did one file while I was waiting for a few more files. Headed over to Eye Mart, they had no record that I tried to make an appointment but took all my info and got me in within 15 minutes. I picked out regular and sunglasses. Even with my little bit of insurance I upgraded enough to owe about $450! Got a wider progressive lense on my regular glasses and those they had to send out. Did polarized sunglasses but they had those done already this afternoon. I picked those up after going with DH to pick up the van. Whew. feels like a full day already. My right eye had changed about 5 steps she said, no wonder I couldn't see. Said there is a bit of cataract growth but still too small to do anything and shouldn't be affecting my vision. Just glad to have it all done, now to talk DH into going. I want to go back to the grocery but wanted to check the on line coupons before I go, hate not having them loaded and it's too hard to log in and mess with each one at the store. I saw their center cut bacon is 3.99 with the coupon so want a few of those to have in the freezer, like to take them to the cabin, or maybe some on the road trip. Feels good to sit for a bit. Hope you have all had a good day. Jan Amy Glad you made it home, cats and DD were good and you got a good sleep in your own bed. Hope all the birds have been fed and you've surveyed all the plants to see how they did. Did the weather get nice enough for walking? Cindy Hope the rain doesn't set the septic over again. GL with the wind, batten down all the things in the backyard. Waving hi to all.
