Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: CARING April 1 - May 31
“Your body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care" - Buddha
This challenge is about caring about and for yourself. So often we get caught up in taking care of everyone else that we don’t give ourselves the care we need. Or we give up caring about ourselves. A variety of reasons and for no reason, it just happens. The hard part is to recognize it and once you do, it is hard to explain because very few want to acknowledge it. You get kudos for taking care of others, not so much for taking of yourself. Not caring about yourself can leave an emptiness that you may try to fill with food and alcohol. The emptiness remains, just stuffed down. We want and need more for ourselves. So let’s begin!
Treat yourself the way you’d treat someone you love.
Love yourself first and the rest will follow.
Focus on health and well being
So how do you begin to care about yourself?
Eating fruits and vegetables sounds like a plan. So does drinking water!!
Walking up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Your heart will thank you.
If you don’t want to be AF then restrict the amount and limit the days you will allow yourself a drink. But remember if 10 is not enough, one is too many.
Start with baby steps. Making too many changes at once can be discouraging so start small. Have you been slacking on flossing daily? Then start making it a ritual. Do you drink soda for energy? Start cutting back by one.
Treat yourself to something you enjoy. Buying the store brand face cream will sit on the counter. If you have a favorite, budget it in as a necessity….better than buying alcohol! Maybe getting a manicure or pedicure is important to you yet you deny it for yourself. Ask yourself why.
Make a list of indulgences that aren’t food or alcohol and start sprinkling them into your life.
Ask for what you need. Too many times we get into a funk and we don’t ask for help. You are loved and we want to help each other.
Curb all the justification. Sometimes you just have to do something because you want to do it. You don’t have to explain yourself!
Think of your successes….add three things that went well today to your daily journal. What?? you aren’t journaling? Journaling is caring!
LET THE CARING BEGIN!!

Before I went out to the garage sales yesterday morning, I wheeled out a desk chair from the garage and put a "Free!" sign on it. I started around 10 and headed home around 1:30. Most of the sales were a dud for me, a lot of kids clothes and toys, but I did find some deals on holiday decor, books, a Pyrex dish. When I got home, the chair was gone, I had lunch and some couch time. I managed to get over 6,000 steps just walking around at the sales, there were several streets where I could park and walk from sale to sale. DH made veggie lasagna for dinner, we had a salad and Texas toast with it. I made a peach dump cake that we had with ice cream for dessert. After dinner we played Winky Dink, then watched the rest of the Magic Prank Show episodes. I went to bed around midnight but had trouble falling asleep. I turned the light back on and read until around 4:30 when I finally got drowsy.
It's another bright and sunny day and it looks like the wind has settled down. DH, DS, & I will go walk, have breakfast, then I'll hit the sales again. There are always more people having sales on Saturday.
Vicki- Glad your colonoscopy was all clear.
Cindy- I am interested in hearing more about your migraine associated vertigo.
Cathy- Sorry the scale is up.

Good morning! Still coughing, much feeling much better. I have been AIM and started tracking again, this week has been a pretty good week and happy with the direction of the scale, slowly, but in the right direction. I was looking at my weight history on MFP in 2015 when I lost 72 lbs, and see that I am on the same track. I am currently 2 lbs higher than I was at this time then. I have been going to DD's to help out with the kiddies while she tries to get the day to day housework done. I love being with them but looking for a break next week, lol. Isabel turned 3 at the end of March and Michael turned 7 months at the beginning of April. I love to watch the way they interact, he just loves her and vice versa. It really fills my heart with so much joy. When I am home, I am knitting. I had bought a Christmas variegated yarn last year so I started an afghan with that yarn and it is coming out beautifully. Today I have to go to DD's for about an hour or so to watch Michael while DD takes Isabel for her dance school photos. Then heading to the market to pick up a few things.
Cindy~ Sorry about the Migraine related Vertigo, ugh! What did the Dr. suggest for meds?
Jan~ Are you through with work yet?
Amy~ You must really be getting excited for your upcoming trip! DD loved her trip from Rome down the Amalfi Coast!
Vicki~ Glad the colonoscopy came out great! That's interesting that eventually a blood test would be an indication of anything wrong.
Waving hi to Murphy, Carole, and Cathy!!!

Hi girls. I just got home from our spring luncheon with the women’s ministry. Once I got home, DS called and wanted to get together for DH’s birthday that we missed because we were sick. So we’re all getting together for dinner tonight! One of these days I’ll get back on track! I’m hoping to get a nap in before we go.
Amy: How fun to go to community yard sales! I hope you found something else today!
Jan: I hope you are enjoying yourself and don’t come home with any new artwork! Or do, if you really want it!
Liz: Glad you’re starting to feel better. I do too, but did notice today that my voice isn’t as strong as it usually is. Do you go to DD’s daily?
Cindy: Migraine associated vertigo. I wonder if that’s what DD gets. Hers is hormonal.
Waving hi to Carole, Cathy, and Murphy!

Hi all. Just checking in. Will catch up with everything tomorrow. Tired, but had a really nice time. No new art but saw a few fun things. Huge place and so glad I was able to walk it all!! Will be nice to have nothing to really do tomorrow. I'm sure I"ll be in bed early tonight. Between sitting out in the sun and all the driving my eyes are just tired. This is the first day I haven't journaled and done all my calendar, tracking, etc in a couple of years. Feels kind of off, but also kind of freeing. But I'll be BOT track tomorrow or I know the goodies will call my name. We had pizza, cookies soda, NA beers so I need to stop before it starts. Dh just went to the store and we're just going to do some sandwiches for dinner. Have a great evening all. Jan

Refocusing on where I want to be when I step on the scale, implementing the plan that will see me there, visualizing myself there. Hope to talk to our son and his family tonight and talked to our daughter last night. Need to work on taxes and FATCA forms but seems I have till June 15 since I live overseas...still prefer to get them done (tomorrow?) if I can.
