Once in a while, DH and I buy a take-out dinner from some local eatery. Lately, it's been from a Chinese market that has the equivalent of a "deli counter" only it's completely for take-out dinners. It got me thinking about take-out in general and yes, I found an article about this topic too.

The Healthiest Takeout Orders for Every Type of Cuisine You can give your kitchen the night off and still eat nutritious meals. By Korin Miller Updated on November 28, 2023 Medically reviewed by Kierra Brown, RD
Takeout can be the most accessible option for many people, and it does not always have to be high in calories, fat, and sugar. Some healthy takeout options include vegetable dishes and baked or steamed foods instead of fried ones.1 Every restaurant and cuisine is different, but you generally want to make sure your takeout includes some produce and has minimal dressings and sauces. - - - - -
There are categories or types of food with information about each. Here is a list of some:
Thai (with sub-categories of summer rolls, chicken satay and green papaya salad) Italian (with sub-categories of tomato-based sauces, thin-crust and protein) Chinese (with sub-categories of brown rice, steamed dumplings and steamed chicken & broccoli) Japanese (with sub-categories of miso soup, chicken teriyaki and tuna or California rolls) Mexican (with sub-categories of whole beans, cheese and sour cream, and veggie burrito bowl) Indian (with sub-categories of dal, chana masala and Tandoori chicken) Greek (with sub-categories of hummus, fattoush salad and falafel pita) Soups and Burgers (with sub-categories of broth-based soup, veggie burger and vegetarian chili)
Not only is there additional information about each category and then sub-category, but there are tips for ordering take-out and a review at the end.

I very seldom get takeout as I don't have access to it out here in the country. sometimes when I am in town I'll get some items in the grocery store to take home and eat. Rotisserie chicken is a good pick, as I can eat some when I get home and heat up some for later, freeze, or use in other things. When I do a chicken I'll often pick up some small containers of potato salad, coleslaw, or even baked beans to eat at home with the chicken. I have also picked up small containers of lasagna or other pasta dishes to take home and heat and eat. Sometimes small pizzas too. One of our grocery stores used to have a buffet with soup and salads. I used to eat some there and order some containers of soup to take home and eat. None of our local grocery stores seem to have them any more. They still have hot buffets where you can choose what to eat from them and a few tables and chairs so you can eat at the store. I have done that at times too. Depending on what part of town I'm in I can usually find places to get a quick meal. There seem to be new ones added all the time and/or others that go away or be replaced with something new.
I may have to run into town today and pick up a short term prescription to take tomorrow because my mail order pharmacy hasn't gotten my prescription of methotrexate ready to send yet. That seems to happen more often than not with this particular prescription. It is for my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I can't order it very far ahead as I need to have a blood test before I can order each one. I can order one bottle every 3 months with a blood test, but I have to see my doctor and get a blood test every 6 months. I'm going to keep a standing order at my local pharmacy for the next time the mail order pharmacy messes up my orders.
It's time to get moving and get some things done in the house. First I'm going to go up to the mailbox and see if I have got an order that is supposed to come today.

I so rarely get take out or eat out that I usually don't worry a lot about what I choose. I'm probably more likely to get something that I wouldn't be likely to make at home, without as much consideration for the health considerations. That said, I'm likely to choose poultry or a vegetarian dish and very likely to split the food (either in restaurant or take out) over more than one meal.
I hadn't thought about grocery store salad/meal bars for awhile. One store here used to have that. I would sometimes buy a few items off the salad bar when I only needed a small amount of something for reipies...so I didn't have to figure out how to use something up and for convenience. (diced celery, for example)

Seems as though now with DH being in very poor health, the only thing that I ever pick up is Chinese or Mexican. Since he is on oxygen 24/7 it is very difficult for us to go into a restaurant. I will probably pick up Chinese from our favorite place tonight. I always get the hibachi chicken or just vegetables. I make 2 or 3 meals out of the portion that they give. I usually order brown rice with my meal & spread it out over 3 meals. DH likes Mexican better than Chinese, but he is still in re-hab until tomorrow, so I am by myself again tonight, so I will order my favorite.
Our local supermarket doesn't offer the salad bar. They do sell rotisserie chickens, also fried chicken, an assortment of salads, etc. all from their deli. They also sell the Boar's head cold cuts, which are top of the line. Of course, the Boar's head products are pricey, but worth it. I really enjoy their roast beef.
I really don't have any difficult conversations on hold. I usually just say whatever I have on my mind & get it over with.
