Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: CARING April 1 - May 31
āYour body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care" - Buddha
This challenge is about caring about and for yourself. So often we get caught up in taking care of everyone else that we donāt give ourselves the care we need. Or we give up caring about ourselves. A variety of reasons and for no reason, it just happens. The hard part is to recognize it and once you do, it is hard to explain because very few want to acknowledge it. You get kudos for taking care of others, not so much for taking of yourself. Not caring about yourself can leave an emptiness that you may try to fill with food and alcohol. The emptiness remains, just stuffed down. We want and need more for ourselves. So letās begin!
Treat yourself the way youād treat someone you love.
Love yourself first and the rest will follow.
Focus on health and well being
So how do you begin to care about yourself?
Eating fruits and vegetables sounds like a plan. So does drinking water!!
Walking up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Your heart will thank you.
If you donāt want to be AF then restrict the amount and limit the days you will allow yourself a drink. But remember if 10 is not enough, one is too many.
Start with baby steps. Making too many changes at once can be discouraging so start small. Have you been slacking on flossing daily? Then start making it a ritual. Do you drink soda for energy? Start cutting back by one.
Treat yourself to something you enjoy. Buying the store brand face cream will sit on the counter. If you have a favorite, budget it in as a necessityā¦.better than buying alcohol! Maybe getting a manicure or pedicure is important to you yet you deny it for yourself. Ask yourself why.
Make a list of indulgences that arenāt food or alcohol and start sprinkling them into your life.
Ask for what you need. Too many times we get into a funk and we donāt ask for help. You are loved and we want to help each other.
Curb all the justification. Sometimes you just have to do something because you want to do it. You donāt have to explain yourself!
Think of your successesā¦.add three things that went well today to your daily journal. What?? you arenāt journaling? Journaling is caring!
LET THE CARING BEGIN!!

Yesterday we ate breakfast at the hotel buffet, typical buffet foods with an English twist, like baked beans and roasted tomatoes. The croissants are very good here, so dangerous. There was a lovely stewed fruit (strawberries, blueberries, etc) that didnāt taste like it had been sweetened much. We went to talk to the Globus rep after breakfast and decided to purchase a tour of Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. The Windsor Castle trip was yesterday, Tower of London is this afternoon. A bus picked us up at the hotel, stopping at a couple of other hotels along the way to pick up more people. I think we ended up with about 25 people. The tour guide was very entertaining and narrated along the way about points of interest as we drove through London. We passed through Kensington, Hammersmith, Chelsea, by Harrods, several museums, and other points of interest. We drove passed the rear wall of the grounds at Buckingham Palace, not much to see but a brick wall, razor wire, and trees, but interesting that we were that close. Windsor was lovely, there is a village just outside with restaurants, shops, and souvenir sellers. We only had about an hour and a half inside the castle, which was not enough time, but we did get to see a lot. We only had a few minutes before we had to meet the bus, but we did dash through the chapel where weāve seen all those royal weddings and funerals and saw the crypt where Elizabeth is buried with Phillip and her parents. We got back to the hotel around 5:30, had dinner at the restaurant and chatted with a couple of ladies from the Chicago area who went to Windsor with us and are on the same tour as we are. I think they are also going to the Tower of London today. After dinner we walked to the bridge and explored the area around the London Eye. There are lots of shops, restaurants, street entertainers, etc. all along the south bank of the Thames. We bought some ice cream and strolled. We got back to the hotel around 8:30, watched some TV. I got involved in a movie and stayed up until 11, which was foolish. It felt like I had trouble sleeping, but Fitbit says otherwise.
Our tour of the Tower of London leaves at 1:30 this afternoon. DH has caught a cold so Iām letting him sleep. Itās almost 10:30, so heāll have to get up soon so we can catch the breakfast buffet by 11:00. I had hoped to do more exploring this morning, but itās better that he sleep and not be a grumpy bear.

Back from breakfast, pretty ate the same stuff as yesterday. DH says he's feeling okay, guess he just needed the sleep.
The weather was really nice yesterday, it's supposed to rain today. According to the internet, about half the Tower of London tour is inside, so I guess we'll be okay.
Cathy- Glad you had fun with Rosalie, yay for finding the pants and tops. Sorry the traffic was not fun.
Jan- WTG steps 10/11, PU, stretches, blue dot, AF, planning food to take on trip. Glad you had a nice day with knitting, lunch, errands. It's sort of nice having no scale to obsess over. Your yard decor sounds nice. GL with your county fair entries, fun that your sis is doing it too. DH has been AF so far on the trip. How did you like the Barbie movie? I'll bet with all those weddings I'll bet DS & GF are at least thinking about it, if not talking about it.
Vicki- Glad your shopping for DH was productive and you got to give DS a hug on his birthday. Sorry Jackson did not play. I've never heard of a calendar party, sounds fun. I was surprised to see the statue of Abe Lincoln too.
Cindy- GL with the appointment with the ortho, tornado watch, flood warnings. Glad Queen Carolina's shelter is working.

Using the food for the Dopamine hit, replacing the A response. Now to start to recognize that again and STOP before I put the food in my mouth. Not sure what I am trying to "soothe" but know food and sweets aren't the answer. Just sitting here trying to plan out some kind of day. All week I've had mop the kitchen floor on my list so that got moved to the top today, no excuses. Who thought white penny tile would be a good idea? Other than that, if we get some sun and things dry out a bit I'll plant what I have in the back and pots, get in a walk at some point and then work on my sweater later. I'll be waiting to hear from DS about the wedding. It's a family friend and neighbor of GF and I'm sure there will be a lot of "What about you 2," hints and nudges. I picture you waking up early as usual and then having your quiet time on the computer while you wait for him to wake up. I wonder if thats how it will be when we are traveling, I still want my morning journal time and hope DH isn't all up in my business in the morning ha ha. Might be fun to have some lady friends on the tour with you to talk to. I enjoyed the Barbie movie, just wonder about Greta's brain musings to thing all of that stuff up, too funny, and so much so true. Not sure what DH thought but he said they sure got the point across, beating it right into your head I can just picture a nice croissant with some yummy jam. Yay for DH being AF so far. Cindy Glad you have a plan to have your knee checked out. Surgery is always daunting but sometimes the only way. After I had my hip done it was DUH, why did I live with pain and wait so long. Of course some was insurance and like you said, Dr's being slow to suggest surgery until all other options were tried. Hope the storms have passed you by and Ms. Caroline is doing well, warm and dry. Don't be gloating about the Pacers beating the Bucks I don't think they can do it without Giannis. And then we have the back story about Halaburton because he's an Oshkosh Kid. Waving hi. FB is sort of charged and I need to get some steps

Good morning!
Had to go back to the Dr. for the third time in 6 weeks. Still coughing and some other cold symptoms, another x-ray, lungs clear. He gave me another antibiotic but by the time I got it and read the side effects, the Dr. was off until Monday. Some of the possible side effects scared the sh#t it of me so I decided not to take it and contact him Monday. I am not as sick as I previously was but just so tired from the post nasal drip and coughing stuff up. He did tell me to also continue the Mucinex and to get Delsym which I still have to buy. I think I got exposed again from DD and the baby when I went over last week to take care of the kids and stayed over night because DD was feeling so sick and her DH was on duty.
In the mean time, weight is just staying the same and I basically have either been helping out DD or staying home and doing the barest of housework and knitting. Hoping to get the mojo back as soon as I really feel better.

Good morning! Er, I guess afternoon! We decided not to go back to the car place yesterday. DH was working in the garden, and neither of us felt like going later in the afternoon. We may end up going Monday. Talked to DD this morning and got my walk in while doing it. They did not get the house, and she is feeling relieved. It was a bit over budget and bigger than they needed. So back to hunting! Rylee went to school with DSIL for take your child to work day. He teaches 5th grade science and she loved it. She even got to do the news report for today. DSIL said she was perfect and he was quite proud! Youāll never guess what Iām doing tonight! Iām going to the Pittsburgh Symphony to hear Beethovenās Symphony #9! One of my former piano students who is also an organist/pianist at my church invited me to go with him and his fiancĆ©e. Somehow they ended up with an extra ticket. Heās the one that gave me a gift certificate to go several years ago, because he already had tickets. So Iām assuming he won them. Whatever, Iām thrilled. Iāll let you know if I ever want to go again! š
Jan: I wondered about all the new stuff. When I was telling DH about it, he frowned and turned his nose up! Weāll see! Can I just say how glad I am you post what you eat? Iām glad Iām not the only one! I was good yesterday until I had 2 bags of chips before dinner. 10 points and not very filling!š¤¦š¼āāļø
Amy: Windsor Castle! How cool! Iām glad you went! I was thinking how brave you were going on your own! Then saw where you took the tour! Iām glad DH wasnāt sick, just tired! How bad was the jet lag for you?
Cindy: I can see why you donāt want another surgery. But like Jan, you donāt want to say why did I put up with the pain so long?
Liz: So sorry you still arenāt feeling well!
Ok, Iād better get something done before heading out!

We took a tour of the Tower of London and saw the Crown Jewels today. The "tower" is actually several towers with small rooms and tiny steep staircases. The Crown Jewels were beautiful, but I wasn't as impressed with this tour as the one of Windsor Castle. I wish we had kept the money and gone to see Buckingham Palace or Westminster Abbey instead. The girls we talked to yesterday apparently walked to Buckingham Palace this morning. It's closed to tours until the summer, but it would have been nice to see the outside. I wanted to ride the London Eye, but DH did not want to, so we just found some dinner and went back to our hotel. It started to sprinkle while we were trying to make up minds about what to eat, so we went into a Pret a Mange, grabbed a couple of sandwiches, chips, and soup for DH, which we ate in our room. Pret a Mange is a chain in the UK that has prewrapped food ready to go. I got a ham and cheese baguette that was pretty good. He's snoozing already at 7pm. He was feeling achy today and was not enthusiastic about doing anything today. If you are awake at 1:30 in the morning, think of us up getting our suitcases ready to go to the train to Paris. Our suitcases are to be ready at 6:30, we meet in the lobby at 7:45 to take the bus to the train. We're planning on getting up at 5am, which would be midnight EST.
Jan- WTG steps 11/11, PU, stretches, AP, tracking. Sorry you felt the need to graze looking for soothing. I sure know how that is. Glad you liked Barbie.
Liz- Sorry you needed to go back to the doctor and the new antibiotic has scary side effects. So sorry that between helping DD and not feeling well yourself not much else is getting done. Hugs!
Vicki- Hope DD finds the house that suits them soon. Glad Rylee liked the Take your Daughter to Work experience. Enjoy the symphony tonight. The tours have been easy and informative, we wouldn't have brave enough to go 20 miles out of London on our own, plus traffic is CRAZY! Apparently it is pretty easy to get around London on the tube and there is a lot within walking distance of our hotel. I haven't felt jet lag at all, just tired the first day from not sleeping on the plane. I think the jet lag will hit when we head home from Rome
I plan on starting the thread tomorrow morning by 1am EST, but won't do personals since I have to get my laptop in my suitcase. I had trouble this morning, so if it's not there by 1, I won't be back online for several hours.

Hi All!
The day started with checking on Queen Carolina, still nesting. Then as I opened the drapes....there was a painted bunting! I think I caught a glimpse of the female as well. I had no idea that they were in the area but it was a good start to the day.
Then since friend/girl was still here, I started making a chicken casserole for dinner. Was cleaning out stuff from the fridge to use, backed up and twisted my knee. I don't know how other than I didn't have the compression bandage on. Here it is 10 hours later and the pain is still intense. It is swollen but no bruising. I'm having a great deal of difficulty getting out of a chair and it is painful to bend the knee. I've used heat and cold, Voltaren, aspercreme, Tylenol and nothing is helping. I think it could be a long night. TMI but I might get stuck on the toilet, lol.
I wish friend/girl would go home. DS told her if she wasn't happy watching the game, feel free to leave. She is just sulking and playing games on her phone. DS is doing his best but she started crying when he suggested she go home. He doesn't want to share the casserole, which he finished making, so he has thrown a pizza into the oven. I think it maybe time to cut her loose.
Amy, loving all the photos! and hearing about your adventures. Thank you for starting the board. I will check in the AM so don't put any pressure on yourself. I hope DH feels better! Will Globus escort you to the train? I hope you can get some rest tonight. Do you know how long the train ride will be?
Jan, not gloating about the Bucks! They are always a thorn in our side. Celtics are having a tough time keeping their goal in mind. I understand the need for something soothing. I can't tell you how many I think a shot of scotch or a bourbon and soda would soothe my being/help me sleep. Glad you liked Barbie...I thought it was fun. I had the original Barbie. I hope not too much pressure is being put on DS. I'm thinking DGF is okay with all while she pursues her career.
Liz, I hope you feel better soon. Are allergies bad in your area? Glad your lungs are clear but side effects can seem scary. After listening to ads on the TV, I don't want to take anything. Hugs!
Vicki, never a fan of my friends' cars with all the new and improved stuff. DS always says you can turn it off but I just want to stick with my car in spite of having offers on it all the time. I hope you had a wonderful time at the Symphony! I guess after today I have no choice about my knee.
Cathy, hope you are having a wonderful weekend and getting to chat with family!
Hi Carole! How goes the kitty cat? How are you doing?
Hi Murphy!
Think I am heading to bed. I need to stretch out my leg and hope it doesn't lock in place. This has escalated a bit too quickly.
Hugs to all, Cindy
