Welcome to Alcohol Free is What We Want To Be! We are glad you are here with us! If you have been struggling with your weight and have found this board you undoubtedly have your own unique, complicated relationship with alcohol and food. Laying out the problem honestly can give you the extra push you need to succeed in getting it under control. A few questions for you to think about...do you wake up at 3 AM wondering what did you do? Do you sometimes have no recall of the evening before or do you try to recover your memory of the evening before you even get out of bed? Is your spouse angry with you...or do you simply think that A is taking over too much of your life, affecting your weight loss? These are hard questions but know that you will find understanding, love, encouragement and support on this thread. We are each in a different stage of this journey but you will find others have shared your experiences. There is no judgment, just an acknowledgement that we have been there, done that. This board of great people will support you in your journey.
Some of us have been here for several years, others are new, but all are welcome and if you have visited before but didn't stay, there is still and always a place for you. Don't get overwhelmed, take your time, if something strikes you, respond. We are great at giving advice, whether you want it or not....you will get tough love, if necessary, but you will also find help. We practice positive self-talk and support, we encourage and gently hold each other accountable. We each have stories to tell, share and suggestions to help. We post different challenges during the year. Please join us if you think this is the group for you. You will be glad you did.

New Challenge: CARING April 1 - May 31
“Your body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care" - Buddha
This challenge is about caring about and for yourself. So often we get caught up in taking care of everyone else that we don’t give ourselves the care we need. Or we give up caring about ourselves. A variety of reasons and for no reason, it just happens. The hard part is to recognize it and once you do, it is hard to explain because very few want to acknowledge it. You get kudos for taking care of others, not so much for taking of yourself. Not caring about yourself can leave an emptiness that you may try to fill with food and alcohol. The emptiness remains, just stuffed down. We want and need more for ourselves. So let’s begin!
Treat yourself the way you’d treat someone you love.
Love yourself first and the rest will follow.
Focus on health and well being
So how do you begin to care about yourself?
Eating fruits and vegetables sounds like a plan. So does drinking water!!
Walking up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Your heart will thank you.
If you don’t want to be AF then restrict the amount and limit the days you will allow yourself a drink. But remember if 10 is not enough, one is too many.
Start with baby steps. Making too many changes at once can be discouraging so start small. Have you been slacking on flossing daily? Then start making it a ritual. Do you drink soda for energy? Start cutting back by one.
Treat yourself to something you enjoy. Buying the store brand face cream will sit on the counter. If you have a favorite, budget it in as a necessity….better than buying alcohol! Maybe getting a manicure or pedicure is important to you yet you deny it for yourself. Ask yourself why.
Make a list of indulgences that aren’t food or alcohol and start sprinkling them into your life.
Ask for what you need. Too many times we get into a funk and we don’t ask for help. You are loved and we want to help each other.
Curb all the justification. Sometimes you just have to do something because you want to do it. You don’t have to explain yourself!
Think of your successes….add three things that went well today to your daily journal. What?? you aren’t journaling? Journaling is caring!
LET THE CARING BEGIN!!

April 22: 197.5 at home April 29: May 6: May 13: May 20: May 27: End of Challenge, May 31: Good Morning all. Happy Monday. It's still gray and wet so after breakfast I'm going to get myself to the Y, at least do the treadmill and some weights. I finally figured out the me360, once I turned the sound up so I could hear where the lady was directing me to stand. I wasn't getting my feet right. Happy that most measurements were down a smidge at least, except my biceps were up a smidge! Whee, counter Push-ups. I will do them again when we get home from vacation. I had mostly a lazy day but excited to have my sweater off the needles, now to get it sewn together. I started on another little mini gnome last night but then couldn't focus and watch the movie at the same time. It was cute, about some weird event that happened that erased everyone's memory of the Beatles and some other things like Coke, except for this one guy. He started singing their songs and everyone thought he was an amazing songwriter. We enjoyed it. Now DH has a Coen brother film to watch that I will probably pass on. We got our mattress pad/bed yesterday but didn't unbox it yet. Will get it out in the van today to let it "fluff" back up. Says it can take up to 72 hours for the foam to get back to real size. I also bought a new camera card that will hold lots of photos, want to have the whole road trip on one card so I can find things and print off it. Also was just too lazy to keep deleting photos off my old card ha ha. Which reminds me, I need to get my photo entries in for this month, Birds in Flight. I don't have a lot of great ones, but still like to enter. I talked to my friend in Oregon last night, pretty sure we will head up to see them after Yosemite. At first I didn't want to commit, now I figure if I commit, we will go. Then my other friend that moved to Portland said she has a place at the Coast for 3 nights and we could then go up there for a night or two and wouldn't have to go all the way to the city to see her and meet her new dog Riley. Starting to all come together, but then come the crazy dreams. Oh well, this too will pass. Guess I better get moving, just going to make some oatmeal for breakfast and get out the door. Will check in later. Jan Cindy Hope you can get the ortho appt moved up and get something figured out. You are in my thoughts and so glad DS is there with you to help out. Accidents and falls can just be so random and I worry about that with traveling but it just shows it can happen just as easily at home. Hugs Amy Looks like a beautiful evening in the city! You are going to have a packed day today if you are leaving again tomorrow. Don't get too over tired. Glad DH got some sleep and you found a phone charger. I'm sure he enjoyed watching some news I wonder how my DH will fare on the road. Not sure I'm happy we have a tv in the camper, but maybe their will be no internet which you need to watch I think. Are you taking all your pictures on your phone? Do you plan to do any shopping? Or just window shopping? Enjoy your day. Carole Sorry about your post, but glad you checked in. Is the kitty still in the bedroom or been given house privileges yet? How is Ty liking his job? Liz Hope the meds are doing more good than harm and you are starting to feel better. You are good about finishing one project before starting another, I have 3 or 4 going at all times ha ha. Your stuffed peppers sound yummy. DS was driving back up to Boston last evening from NY, hope the weather was decent. Will you be at DD house much this week? We haven't had the boat out. It needs a motor and it's not a high priority for DH. We had a friend who's an electrical guy look at the old one but I guess it's just done for. They aren't cheap, even for used, so it's just a wait til something shows up. Maybe this summer. Waving hi

I was just about to email my PC when my phone rang and it was his nurse calling and wanted to know if the cough has subsided? I told her that I was stopping that medication. She is conveying it to him and I will see what he is going to recommend. Today I am just going to take DH for his optometrist appointment then just going to come home and try to get some rest after being up most of the night coughing. Other than that not much planned. I do plan on trying to start tracking again on MFP, it has been a while, and I am more successful, when I am more accountable. Amy~ Buon Jour!!! Your dinner sounded absolutely delicious! Glad you were able to get another phone charger and DH was able to watch some TV again. Cindy~ So sorry that you had to go to urgent care. I hope you can get an appointment with the ortho before Wednesday. Jan~ Was it a day trip to Chicago for a special event or just a day into the city? How far of a drive was it from home? DH complains every now and then but it has not been as bad as it was. Thank goodness, he has his own car and usually goes out Wednesday through Sunday several hours out of the day, gives me my peace time. Waving Hi to Murphy, Vicki, Cathy and Carole!!

Hello,
Amy, sorry that I missed that you had started the board. I guess I posted late enough that yesterday's thread was pushed up and I never thought to look any further. Loving all the photos and appreciate you sharing them. Living vicariously through you! What has impressed you the most so far? What activities are planned for Switzerland? I'll do a better job of looking for the thread.
I was up off and on during the night but the rest is definitely helping. I did call to see if I could get in any earlier than Wednesday but other than putting myself on the list, there wasn't any openings. Probably as well....I would like to take a shower before I go and also plan out getting dressed.
Jan, I don't think I've seen a painted bunting before either. At first I thought someone's pet bird had escaped. They like millet and I've started putting out more of that. Glad the measurements are going the right way! Glad the trip is all coming together. I feel blessed that DS can help me. The friend/girl did the dishes. Thank you for the thoughts. I am hoping the Urgent Care doctor diagnosis is wrong.
Liz, I'm so sorry you had a bad reaction to the antibiotic. Do you mind sharing what one it was? I hope the PC gave you a different one that will work. Please get some rest, hope the coughing subsides.
Get to take another pill...going to move from bed to recliner. Enforced rest is really not my thing but the pill helps me doze off.
Hi GG, Cathy, Carole and Murphy!
Hugs, Cindy

Hi girls. The symphony was amazing. Before intermission there were 4 pieces played. One was Ave Maria, which I knew. Total length for the 4 songs was less than 30 minutes. The Beethoven #9 was 67 minutes. I have to confess,my thought was how will I ever sit through the 4 movements? But it was beautiful! Ode to Joy is the last movement, and the Mendhelson choir plus 4 soloists sang as well. Andrew drove a Subaru Legacy so he was able to explain all the fancy stuff on the car. We went up today and test drove it and made a deal. We’ll go pick it up tomorrow after I get back from the pool.
Amy: I am so loving your pictures! I’m glad you actually got one with DH smiling! I can’t believe you’re actually in Paris! So cool!
Jan: I’ll let you know how DH likes all the new stuff. His comment was more stuff to break! When he put the car in reverse, the lights started flashing and beeping because someone was coming behind us. We both liked that! I guess I’m going to have to do something kind of activity today. It’s a little too warm to walk. I hate to wait until later, just in case!
Liz: Sorry about your reaction to your medication. I was thinking you were doing so much better because of it! When we went to Pittsburgh, we stopped at an authentic Italian restaurant and I had arancini balls! One just had mozzarella inside. The one I really liked had risotto in it and some kind of sauce. Yum!
Cindy: I’m so sorry about your knee! I thought you just bumped it! Did you actually fall on it? I’m glad the girl did your dishes, but really, she needs to know when to leave!

It's been a long, tiring, but fun day. We drove around Paris again then took a cruise of the Seine. Beautiful day for it. We got back to the hotel around 4:30. Two women travelling together that we've been friendly with invited us to go to dinner with them and I accepted for us. DH had a nap then said he wasn't going, so I went down to the lobby and gave our apologies. DH & I went across the street to a seafood place for dinner, I had mussels with frites (french fries) and he got paella, both were good. We ran into the girls a couple of times while we were out and about, but it seemed like all was good between us. I shopped in a Pharmacie next door to the restaurant to look for some cosmetic stuff while DH was still eating/ waiting for the bill. After we were back in the room I noticed my wireless mouse for my laptop was gone from the table I was using. I've looked everywhere for it, maybe housekeeping did something with it. I went to the souvenir shop next door that seems to carry everything, but no luck.
We're leaving at 7:30 tomorrow for Lucerne, Switzerland, so probably won't be back here until tomorrow evening, at the earliest.
Jan- Yay for figuring out Me360, I forgot that I had the same problem the first time. Yay for a decrease in your measurements, getting your sweater off the needles. I loved the movie, "Yesterday", especially the John part. GL with your photo entry. I am taking the pictures with my phone, not always in focus, but pretty good for the most part. No serious shopping, just odds and ends in small shops.
Liz- So sorry you had a bad reaction to the antibiotic, hope you feel better soon. Glad DH isn't complaining as much. Love stuffed peppers! We're not going to Amsterdam, Switzerland next, then Bergamo, Venice, Rome.
Cindy- No worries about starting another thread, I did say I wasn't going to do it, but then I found a power adapter. Now that my mouse has gone missing, I'll leave it to you until I can find another one. It's just too hard for me to copy and paste. So sorry about the stress fracture, hopefully no surgery involved. Hugs!
Vicki- So glad the symphony was amazing.
Carole- So sorry you lost another post.

Hi all. Just checking in. Have had a good day. Got myself to the Y and did some weights after walking the track. Felt good to get it done, then I went on to Aldi's for some cold brew coffee and of course found a few other things, mostly snacks for traveling. Next was Home Goods and I found some plastic trays that fit in the cupboards above the sink in the van. I've filled them up with canned goods, boxed things and crackers etc. We started getting the rest of the camping stuff out of the basement and seeing what can fit where. Mostly trying to get things corralled so they don't slide around and open up doors while we are driving. I was ready for a nap this afternoon but just kept powering through. Walgreens sent a message so I just went back and picked up some meds. Looks like my plan for Ahi is getting pushed off til tomorrow and it will be a Nacho dinner Not great before WI but I have had a really LP day so should be ok. Either way I will go to WI and meeting tomorrow. When I've been munchy in the afternoon I've been having a glass of Almond milk with Sugar free Nestle Quik which gets rid of the craving and fills me up. 2 points. Guess I better get going, sure I will sleep well tonight. See you tomorrow. Jan Amy I didn't see your first post this morning either. Sounds like a whirlwind of a few days. Sorry to hear the mouse went missing, maybe went in the trash and got emptied? Glad you found a nice dinner near by, I wouldn't be able to pass up all the pastries and goodies!! I'm enjoying all your pictures. Thanks for sharing. GG Glad you enjoyed the concert. Yay for getting a new car! I'm sure you'll get used to all the add ons, just takes a bit. I do like my back up camera! Have fun at the pool tomorrow. Liz So sorry about the reaction to the meds. Yuck. Hope they were able to replace it with something else. We went to Chicago for an Art Fair and then spent the night at my cousin's house in the burbs. It's about 150 miles all the way out to the suburbs but not so bad just going to the city. Cindy Glad the rest is helping. Don't push it before you can go to the ortho. Has your bunting been back? We're still hoping to get a few more nights camping in the Valley, I get some cancellation updates but I'm not quick enough or they come over night and are gone when I get up. Trying to up my Karma bank to see if it helps. Saw a guy with a prosthetic leg standing on the corner by the gas station. Something just said "He's one you should help" so I gave hime $10. He had hearing aids in and could tell he's mostly deaf too by his speech. He was so thankful, told me his name is Steven and that god will bless me ! Can't hurt right

Ran errands yesterday. Thunderstorm cut internet for hours. Have healthy food to eat today and plan to do so.
AMY: How fun to be in Paris! Sometimes hotels have phone charger adapters or electricity adapters. If not, an electric shop might but there is also a difference there of being 220 instead of 110 so don't just plug the phone in! Never mind...glad you found an adapter.
JAN: Talked to both children and granddaughters. I helped my daughter with her outfit for a banquet and read her speech. No plans to go to the USA or have family come here...yet. I want to go but my son says summer is HOT and that is the only time my daughter is not working so??? The granddaughters probably have some sort of plans but not sure what. The oldest may go to swim camp for the third year in a row and the youngest usually does a week of horseback riding camp but might go with her sister to swim camp instead...or her mother may want her to?
CAROL: I had poofing posts - hope you are doing okay.
LIZ: Hope the new medicine helps.
CINDY: I hope you get relief from the pain and that you get in to see an orthopedist earlier than scheduled.
