People over 60 have a different metabolism than those who are younger, and weight loss gets harder as one ages. This thread is for us.
Join us! Share your ideas, your successes, your frustrations. Offer support. Get advice from folks who are on a similar journey.
Our challenge is to stay on plan, exercise and keep trying to lose weight while improving our overall health -- and maintaining a positive attitude!
Think about where you were and how you felt when you made the initial decision to join The Senior WW Challenge. Close your eyes and remember when you said to yourself “Enough is enough and I’m getting in shape!” On a scale of 1 to 10, how serious are you? You really need to be an eight or higher! If not, you should probably reevaluate your thoughts and feelings about regaining great health in your life.

We did get a lot of cleaning done yesterday that we’ve been meaning to do but had been putting off as I wanted things to look nice with Debbie and Jim coming over but since they cancelled because Debbie is sick at least our house looks better. I even vacuumed Rosie’s bed to get out pieces of grass and dirt she tracked in. Today I might iron my capris I finally brought down or wait until we get back from Missouri as the weather is turning cool again so won’t be needing them until after we get back as it’s also going to be cooler in Missouri. So except for what I wear to the graduation I’ll be in jeans.
Fred wants to either go to Costco or Walmart today but I will opt for Walmart and remind him we went to Costco on a Saturday before and swore never again. Plus what he wants to get we don’t really need at the moment.
I really just want to have a do nothing day as bad storms are supposed to move in this afternoon and bring the cool down for the next several days. By cool down I mean out of the 80’s and back to low 70’s.

Oh Joan what an ordeal with DH’s fall and injuries. Lack of sleep doesn’t help. I hope his recovery is fast.
Ruth I knew about the carpel tunnel but it slipped my mind. I hope Mike heals quickly.
This morning there’s an estate auction several blocks from here. We’ll go and see if there’s anything interesting. Don’s always looking for tools and garden things.

Good morning. Another .5 inch of rain in the gauge this morning. Plants are growing like weeds and weeds are growing as well. A dear friend stopped by yesterday to see the house and brought me a beautiful rose bush. I'll put it in the side flower bed. I'll post a pic of the rose bush and my african violet. The violets love the sun room and are still acting like "blooming idiots".
Taking a trip to the "haz Mat center". Today is one day you can take all your things that no one else will dispose of. It's a bit of a trip, but I moved two boxes of bad stuff here and I want it out of my garage.
Hope everyone has a productive day doing as they please.

Greetings:
Sharon, I do love African violets. That was great fun yesterday. I feel like I can DO this! When I listened to the talk, I realized that I was doing many things right, but the things I was doing wrong were absolute killers! The easiest and quickest way for light is to put them under the lights under kitchen cabinets if you have them. That's where I put these. She gave us two handouts. I'll pass them along. I like doing wick watering, but I wasn't quite right with it and I wasn't using the right kind of food -- no food with urea in it. I've always used perlite, someone told me that years and years ago, so there's one good mark! Will be happy to share. I Geri obviously grows them, too. That's a lovely plant, Geri. I also learned that violets grow to different sizes in different parts of the country. Texas grows the biggest ones. Colorado's are smaller, sort of like Wyoming's. I'm a tad excited!
Today is Kentucky Derby. A neighbor is having a party and I found my lavender hat. It had fallen over the top stack of stuff in the closet. So, I'll wear it. Bill had a lavender shirt but I guess we tossed it. It's not even in the back hinterlands of the closet. I'll make deviled eggs to take over. Everyone will bring an appetizer. We've already picked our horses, though Bill says he's used to horse picking being by drawing names! What a way to pick a horse. But probably the most fair. I guess we'll find out. But we have a few picked out in case we can choose.
The grass in the hellstrip is the greenest and lushest ever! I need to tell the Board they picked a good company.
QOTD: And, as always, answer some, none or all, as the spirit moves you. Remember, these questions come from my conversation topics box.
1. If you could work as an assistant to anyone for a year, who would you choose? Or if you could have anyone work as an assistant for you for a year, who would you choose?
2. This was kind of funny ... How would you like to spend your elder years? Or, how did you originally want to spend your elder years. Now, that is of course, if these are your elder years. If your elder years are ahead of you, then the question is yet different for you. You pick the viewpoint!
I feel like April just slid away from me. Where did it go!! I'm determined to get a firm grip on May. Some specific plans for May.

Good morning, friends. In a bit Tom and I will go to our Electricity provider, which is taking $25 off our next electric bill if we vote in the current board election. Every dollar counts.
Joan, I hope your DH is feeling better.
Loving your plant photos, Karen and Geri!
AOTD: 1. If you could work as an assistant to anyone for a year, who would you choose? The Dalai Lama. It would be a privilege to hear some of the beautiful things he says first-hand. Or if you could have anyone work as an assistant for you for a year, who would you choose? My DGS and DGD East Coast. He can do anything. I have a ton of things around the house he could help me with. And she has a very good sense of design. I have some redecorating I want to do.
2. This was kind of funny ... How would you like to spend your elder years? Or, how did you originally want to spend your elder years. Originally I wanted to spend my older years with my first husband. Then we got divorced. Then I did spend some of my older years with my second husband, Mort. Now I want to spend the rest of my older years right here. I cannot imagine a better place to be.
Funny story: at the concert last night, I was interviewed by the local TV channel. They were asking about why I attended the outdoor concerts, how many I had attended, and which outdoor I had enjoyed the most. I told the interviewer that I had attended almost all of them. When she asked which I had really enjoyed, I could only think of one. I started laughing after. My memory is definitely not what it used to be.
When I spoke with Tom this AM and told him about dancing last night, he said, "For an old lady, you get around pretty well." I laughed and said we are old, aren't we. We talked about how many new people move here at 55. That is about 30 years younger than we are. In most groups here, we are the oldest. That's saying something for a retirement community! Gotta laugh. I am grateful that my health is as good as it is.
I stained a pair of white pants and washed them twice with Shout. They were lighter, but the stain was still there. The next wash I put Dawn on the stain and the stain disappeared. Yay!
Have a wonderful day, all.

I got up this morning to a very short rain shower. Sun is shining now so think rain is gone for the day. Was hoping for more. Did spot an Oriole at their feeder, but for some reason they hop to the hummingbird feeder which hangs higher just out side the TV room windows. Oriole feeder hangs in same area but lower on a shepherd’s hook. 2 WW zooms too. Thinking I want to put up a bluebird house. I know they are already nesting but I have 3 new houses just lying in my garage since last year. Guess the saying is” if you want something done, do it yourself “. I will not be climbing anywhere to hang this one as going to put it on the clothesline post. May have to get steel poles like my sis did for hers for the other two. Bluebird houses do not need to be real high.
African violets, my mom and sister Sheryl always grew them. Mom always sat hers in the window sills.. Beautiful but I didn’t seem to have the knack or care, on or the other. Window sills aren’t the same today at least mine aren’t.
I won no money at the casino yesterday but as I cashed out my ticket to leave an older guy asked me if I would help him use the ATM machine. I kinda laughed and said, I don’t know how to use an ATM machine as I don’t have an ATM card. But we proceeded to try. He put his card in and it disappeared, we continued with the screen prompts. Studying each as we went. We successfully got him some money. I do not know his name or his pin number but I do know how much he has in his checking account. I was surprised at that. He happily went on his way and I came back to Oskaloosa for gas, a stop at Fareway grocery and stopped at bank to cash my Walmart gas card rewards check. A good day.
Would like to set out my other little tree but it may be too muddy for that. Sandy you mentioned 80’s, no 80’s here mostly 60’s to low 70’s. If it’s not going to rain I wish the sun has brighter as I still have places to mow and think it to wet.
Speedy recovery for Mike and Joan’s husband.
1. If you could work as an assistant to anyone for a year, who would you choose? Or if you could have anyone work as an assistant for you for a year, who would you choose? I definitely would not choose my daughter, she is probably very good at her job because she has a lot of responsibility at the hospital. She is head of Infectious Control, Employee Health Nurse, and something else, I don’t recall. One strict lady. She does not hesitate to put you in your place if you are not holding up your end of your job. Think I worked very well with Pat and Janet as their assistant. Pat at beauty shop, Linda as well, Janet at post office.
2. This was kind of funny ... How would you like to spend your elder years? Or, how did you originally want to spend your elder years. Now, that is of course, if these are your elder years. If your elder years are ahead of you, then the question is yet different for you. You pick the viewpoint! Well my elder years have not quite gone as planned. Hopefully Steven and I could have had several more years together. We did things separately but many great things and times together. Now I guess, just try to stay healthy, independent and find little projects along the way to keep me happy. Live in this home as long as I can.

I have a stiff neck. I woke during the night with it and have rubbed med on it so it is a bit better.
I would work for my favorite boss. Mr. D. I had a lot of principals but he was my favorite. When I piloted a program and told the supervisor it was no good. She told me to sit down and shut up. They had already purchased the program for every kindergarten and first grade teacher. When I told Mr. D about it he stood up for me. 5 years later the program was pitched. They would have saved a lot of money if they listened to me. He sent me to Columbus for a workshop every year and one was when I met Oprah. I put what I learned into work every year and involved every child in the building. He would sometimes walk in my room with me completely unaware he was there. He retired before I did. I would have kept working if he was there. When I applied for a teaching job in Ft. Myers after being retired for over 10 years. That principal said she had never seen such a glowing recommendation. I loved my years when he was my boss.
Elder years. I have lived longer than any relative and all my best friends. Now I am physically hindered so disappointed that I can’t go out and take a walk. I have a few wonderful friends but they have their own lives and families. Every holiday is spent alone and I accept the fact that it is. My plan was to be married and have five kids and umpteen grands. God must have had other plans for me . I am envious of families.

Gail I agree where you are at is just perfect for you. When we began wintering in Florida we were the “babies” and when we left we were the older generation.
The auction was nice but nothing we needed so we came home. Don mowed again. I’m thinking he regrets putting down weed n feed! I recently got a Misfits order of fruits and vegetables but had already bought a lot of that in my grocery pickup. So I have on a pot of WW cabbage soup and will make bolognese sauce later.
Its starting to feel muggy out.

1. If you could work as an assistant to anyone for a year, who would you choose? Or if you could have anyone work as an assistant for you for a year, who would you choose? I’d like to assist a coach, any kind I could learn easily. Either of my DDs would make a good assistant, they know how I do things.
2. This was kind of funny ... How would you like to spend your elder years? Or, how did you originally want to spend your elder years. Now, that is of course, if these are your elder years. If your elder years are ahead of you, then the question is yet different for you. You pick the viewpoint! We spent our senior years in Florida and traveled. We’re not elderly yet but we are enjoying more family time.

Hello Friends!
Today after my yoga class I went to Body Balance at the Wellness Center. It is Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates. It was a very challenging class with lots of balance poses and lots of ab work. I will probably be sore tomorrow so I plan to take a soaky epsom salt bath tonight to help with any muscle pain.
Mike had a pretty restless night last night, which was not surprising. He started out sleeping in the recliner and was back and forth from the bed to the recliner all night. He said his pain is minimal. He is doing his exercises for shoulder, elbow and fingers. He said the finger exercises hurt.
Joan, Wow, sorry you DH is in so much pain. Hope he does not have a rotor cuff tear in addition to the severely sprained wrist and everything else from the fall. May he heal quickly!
Geri, Your African violets are beautiful. I was successful with them in Ohio but have not had success in Florida.

Good afternoon.
It's a beautiful 77 degrees here today with lots of sunshine although it's a bit on the humid side.
Since it's so nice today, we're going to grill out tonight. I have smoked sausage that I'll cut into pieces, along with baby potatoes, fresh mushrooms, baby carrots and onion and place them all in a foil packet. All Jerry will have to do is set it on the grill for about 45 minutes. No clean-up either!
Karen C, your neighbor's Kentucky Derby party sounds fun. I always watch the race too. I don't pick my horse out until just before the race starts. Sometimes I pick the name that I like the most and sometimes I pick the horse that I think is the prettiest. Very scientific of me!!
Geri and Karen, love the African violets! I've tried a few times to grow them, but I've never had any luck.

AOTD: 1. I had an administrator when I worked in long term care who was wonderful to work for. I was the Activity Director so I was just one of several department heads. David was very fair, patient, and had a great sense of humor. We got along great so being his assistant would have been a dream job.
2. I always thought I'd be a very active person even as I aged but I never thought that an accident would occur to change that outcome. Even though some things have changed, I still am able to enjoy being with family and friends.

I have turned on the KY derby just in time to see Wynonna sing. Great job Don spent his young years hanging around race tracks. He loved studying and handicapping the races. He knew what he was doing and one time handed me half of a win on one race and that was $1600. So he made $3200 on that . He picked the top four in order.. He made bets I didn’t understand at all.We went by bus to the other coast to races. When we went to Vegas he spent his time in the sports betting. So today I am thinking of him

1. If you could work as an assistant to anyone for a year, who would you choose? I don't think I want to work as anyone's assistant anymore, but at one time I may have like to be an assistant to someone kind, like Tom Hanks. Or if you could have anyone work as an assistant for you for a year, who would you choose? This one was fun. Wouldn't it be a kick to have Martha Stewart as your assistant for a year???
2. This was kind of funny ... How would you like to spend your elder years? I am a young 74, so I would love to continue teaching yoga into my 90s or longer. I have always admired Tao Porchon-Lynch, who died at age 101 and continued teaching her entire life. Or, how did you originally want to spend your elder years. Now, that is of course, if these are your elder years. If your elder years are ahead of you, then the question is yet different for you. You pick the viewpoint!
