Even the streets are covered in snow now.
CJ, I'm glad to hear that the roof will be taken care of. Something like that is a huge worry and now that it will be taken care of you can relax about that. And you're right. A new roof is a good selling point.I do hope your ins company will pay for the entire roof. That would be great.
Yes people can really take advantage sometimes. Even if you just charge for the materials involved people get upset when you don't just make something for them without charging anything and then they sometimes have the nerve to complain about something in the item. I did make those fingerless gloves for my dd's best friend (don't know if my dd ever gave them to her or not) but anyone else I'd just tell them that I have so many things on my list that I'd never get them done.
CJ, there's a woman on the other thread I post on that said the same thing...what good are gloves without fingers? Well my dd, dgks, and most other young people like them because then they can text with them on and hands do stay warm but then they can use their fingertips. Some people say they use them at work because it's chilly where they work and they are able to keep hands warm while still using a computer. Some people like them for driving and some like them because then they can smoke without taking off their gloves. I think the grandchildren I'm making them for right now just want some because i made some for their mom. she likes them for the phone. Also for people that have Raynaud's they're good because again, the keep the hands warm and surprisingly, even though it's usually the fingers that are affected, keeping your hands warm does keep the fingers from the effects of Raynauds.I tried it and it works (I keep forgetting to put them on though) and I can crochet with them on. There are also some decorative gloves that are used just as a fashion statement like the lacy ones I made for dd. They're good in grocery stores where it's cold but you need to get out money or write a check. Don't have to remove the gloves. It's mostly I'm sure just a fashion thing and is popular right now.
Phyl, sounds like that woman was definitely trying to take advantage of you. Those people usually don't want to do anything in return either. I'm glad to hear your hip surgery is scheduled once again. I will and I'm sure the others will be praying for successful surgery and speedy recovery.

it is a lovely sunny day here, and I haven't been anywhere though I will go and pick Devin up from school soon. I haven't done any crafting since Sunday when I finished the b/blanket I was knitting. I just have to gice it a wash and it will be all ready to go. Now I have to det my mind to finish the one I am crocheting. It is past the 1/2 way point and I am deciding what to do next. Of course it will be another b/blanket and I just have to decide on the pattern. I might do a waffle stitch as I haven't done for awhile.
cj. I am very happy for you that you are finally making some progress with your roof. If the roofer follows through working with the insurance company that will be a big help.
Ginny. I am really enjoying the Poldark story. I am now into the 3rd book. Yesterday when I was checking out something on Amazon I checked out how much the Poldark DVDs where. I noticed that they were offering the 1st season free. I am sorry I didn't watch when it was on PBS a couple of years ago. So yesterday I watched the 1st season on my computer. There were 8 one hour segments and I watched all of them. The first season covered the first 2 books. I am glad I had read the books before I watched the DVD. I think you would probably enjoy it. I didn't do any crafting yesterday as sitting at my computer is not the most comfortable place fore me to knit or crochet. I downloaded it from my library so I am sure your library will have the books.
I don't blame not wanting to crochet for other people. It just doesn't pay and I refuse and just make items for my family or a friend. I did make a lot of caps and baby items for the church Craft Faire when we had one each year and of course the b/blankets that I donate. A lady asked me to finish a cardigan she had started and I declined because I don't want to finish a project started by another person.
Phyl, I wish you well as you prepare for your hip surgery. I will also keep you in my prayers.
Ruth, I did make a couple of pr. of fingerless gloves but there is really not much need for them here. A friend at church asked me to make her a pair that she used when gardening. I have to go and pick Devin up.
Have a great evening.
Ruth,.

Good evening!
Phyl- great to hear from you! Glad you enjoyed the Russian Santa claus class/workshop. How many blocks had you hoped to finish today? Getting two done seems like a great accomplishment to me. Glad that Connie will be able to help you out with that.....and its good to hear that your hip procedure will be done next month. I would think with some nice spring weather you will have a good time to recuperate and rehabilitate.
CJ- lets just keep our fingers crossed that the insurance co works with your contractor and that you a lot of your roof repair paid for. I hope that they take your need seriously- noone needs to tell you that you have had damage and with each rain it gets worse. I hope its fixed soon!! Very soon.
Ruth - now that you have the pattern figured out, I got through it by just counting humps- and making sure that my humps had the right number ot stitches in each. Looking at it that way made things very very easy. Hope that Dd had a lovely birthday!!
Well, me asking the other coworker to pay $5 was meant to call her bluff....I figured she would want something for free- and that even just. $5 would shine the light on that attitude. Indeed it did....making the first pair free for the other coworker, well- I messed around with that pattern enough that she might not have liked the prototype. I took a gamble.
regarding fingerless gloves, I have a different take on them. First of all the coworker I made the pair for actually wears hers around the house a lot in the winter. We live in NY state- winters are cold. Also for using a cell phone, regular gloves do not work, so one must eitther buy special gloves or remove them.....or use fingerless gloves. Lastly, I have one other reason that pertains to me alone on this thread. School buses take a long time to heat up and I do not have a heated steering wheel. Therefore I must wear gloves. Lots of kids have to be. “Crossed”- brought across the street to get on the bus, which involves the driver using the. “Universal crossing signal”- which is a hand with an upright thumb and the index finger pointing in the direction you want the student to cross. Bare fingers make this much more visible- and its a royal pain in the neck at each stop taking gloves off to cross a student. Fingerless gloves make that so much easier...and still keeps the kids safe.
Night all! G

Meg, good evening......so glad you are enjoying that book! Sorry that you are not comfortable at the computer- yes sitting in a bad position for any length of time has to hurt. So glad you are able to enjoy some nice weather! How are your allergies?
Ruth, you snuck in here too....how kooky to have that much snow this late in April.

I would make things for friends but just casual acquaintances or coworkers probably not unless it was a special occaision or I just wanted to give them a gift. We had lots of baby showers when I was working and if I'd been into crocheting back then(did know how but just didn't do much of it) I would have made things for those people.
Meg, congratulations on getting the knitted blanket done. I'm sure you'll get the crocheted one done soon too. Is hte waffle one you are planning to make a knitted one or crocheted. I started a knitted waffle baby blanket back in 2008 when ds and ddil were expecting their 5th child. I never finished it but I did find it about a year ago so maybe sometime I might finish that one. Crochet waffle blankets are fun to make and for me a lot faster than the knitted ones. In knitting, too, its hard for me to keep track of what row I'm on and what row is next.
Ginny I always did think that fingerless gloves would be great in your job. You probably have to use your fingers a lot and taking off your gloves is a pain and then they can get lost also.I didn't know about the crossing signals though but there's just one of the uses I'd bet you have for them while working.
I had to rip out a little today too. I somehow got two single crochets in a row.I did add six more rows...did a whole ball of the lilac or lavender colored yarn and the first row of the second ball of the almond which is practically an off or antique white, then will be a repeat of the pink then lavender again.i have to remember to save some for the edging.
It has stopped snowing. There's a lot of the ground but it will soon be melted once it warms up to the expected temp of over 50 tomorrow
See you all tomorrow. This evening I'll probably do the second fingerless glove and maybe the potholder or start another pair of fingerless gloves. I have all summer to do that. I'd like to make a bunch of the potholders to send to my sister and some friends and maybe other family members. Everyone can use potholders or hotpads to set hot dishes on.I'm planning on making some for the grands here that have their own places so maybe I should make a bunch for "hope chests" for the younger grandchildren....the children of my ds and dil. It's a great thing to carry around and work on whenever you have to wait for anything.I think I mentioned once about starting some so that I'm at the easy part once I get somewhere like that and I did start a few.

Happy Wednesday Crafters. It's a nice sunny day here but not all that warm. Snow isn't melting except on the streets
The only crafting I've done so far today is.. I had a pull skein of yarn that fell apart and had to roll it into a ball. It was a large one so it took time and you know how they always get all tangled while you're trying to do that...at least mine do.
Have you ever noticed the number of "views" our thread has. Back in Dec, and the first of the year, some weeks we had over 1500 views. Who is so interested in what we make that they view our thread that much. Now the number is down to 200 and 300 each week. I guess they're getting tired of following us.
Well have a great day all and I'll see you later.

Hello Crafters phyl - I'm glad you enjoyed your class and that your surgery is finally scheduled. Ruth and Ginny - thanks for the explanation on the uses for fingerless gloves. I can understand now why they are useful to so many people. Meg - I watched the original Poldark series in the 1970s and the updated one that just came out these last few years. Both were very good. I also read a few of the Poldark books and enjoyed those. It's sunny and around 60 here today. As long as there is no rain I'm happy I haven't been doing much of anything else, so nothing to talk about. Take care everyone!

Good evening!
Ok so we are all boring now with only 200 to 300 views! Oh well- perhaps some folks were bored with winter weather then....
Ruth well its too bad that you had to rip out a few rows. Thankfully the pattern is pretty easy to see a mistake and its not a nightmare to work on. I am sure it will be lovely- do you have any idea how large an afghan you will make? And I hate it when I have to detangle a skein of yarn. What a waste of valuable crafting time. Hope that snow melts soon for you.
CJ- enjoy the nice weather! Any news on when they might really fix your roof?
I am working on fg again. Making a pair for my bf. Gotta get them done before summer comes. Interesting day.....Dd #1 called as I got home from work (did some grocery shopping too, so I was putting that away) to say that she had 2 sick kids (the older 2 grandkids) and that she had a flat tire and was driving to the pediatrician. Dh and I met her at the pediatrician- we went in 2 cars not knowing how it would all work out. I stopped at our mechanic (to see if he could repair the tire)- he is out all week. So I stopped at a tire place- they said they could repair the tire immediately. Drove to the pediatrician- got Dd’s car- drove it to the tire place who (thank you Lord) immediately fixed the tire- and got the car back to Dd before the doctor was done seeing her 2 children. Think I can hang up my superman cape....
So things are busy- am behind in my email- will hopefully get to check that tomorrow. Ginny

CJ, it's always great to see you and you always have a nice word for everyone.I'm glad your weather is holding up so there are no more leaks. Even when I don't have anything to say I still blab
Ginny, yes you sure did have a busy day. You did get to see the grands though and that's always a blessing. I hope the older ones will be well soon and the baby doesn't get sick. Yes the pattern you sent is wonderful and very easy to follow. If I just kept half my mind on it I'd be fine but I seem to let my mind wander and that's when I make too many of the same stitch.ARe you making the same fgs or a different pattern this time?
I started another pair today. It's the one I was working on while ds and dgd were here and they were for that dgd but after they left for some reason I thought I'd made a mistake so tore them out so I don't really know for sure but I think they're ok now and they go fast so it's possible I may have them done this evening. who knows. I had to take some time out to cook with dh. Put country style pork ribs to simmer and he'll have some bbq'd and we took out two and he sliced them and I made sauteed onions and peppers, the slices of pork and some hoison sauce with some of the simmering water which he will have over rice. I tasted some of it and it tastes fantastic. Those are both for him for later and in the meantime he had some bratwurst on hot dog rolls.I plan on having bratwurst on a plate and eating a sweet potato with it. Sound strange I guess but I eat strangely. I haven't worked on the baby blanket yet today or anything else crocheted either except the new fgs
See you all tomorrow and I'll stop back to see if Meg posts

Good morning!
Agree, CJ always has something nice to say- Meg does too! And seriously, Ruth you can manage to make sense out of my worst posts, the ones in which I ramble on and on and make little or no sense. Speaking of making sense, once the logic of that pattern sinks in ( and I am sure it will!) its easy to use and also easy to repair mistakes. I got to the point where I would lightly count in my head for each hump and not allow myself to put the project down unless I had finished a hump (only 4 stitches per hump so it goes quickly). that is how I got out of trouble with that pattern- which is my favorite of all the baby afghans I have made.
I am working on the same pattern of Fg’s for my friend. She is very tall and large boned, so I will have to make a minor modification to the pattern to accomodate her. To do that I figured I better use a pattern I was comfortable with- so I can modify it accordingly.
Have a great day G

Good morning all. It's barely morning here but still another hour.
Yes the pattern is very easy and it's one I will be using a lot. I think as you go on with a pattern like that, your fingers get into a memory thing and you don't have to really count conciously.I can't wait to get started on one where I used the back loops. That's going to really look fantastic.
Yes when you have to revise a pattern its best to use one that you've used before and can see that making those changes are possible and fairly easy.So you're very smart to do that. The one I made yesterday I'm going to start over because I don't like how it looks with the hook they said to use. I'm going to use one size smaller. At least I got in practice following the pattern and I see that I got it right so now I can go on and make the "real" one. In the pattern it has directions for small and large. Well even this "small" I made is really large and long so using the smaller hook should make it a better fit. I know my dgd doesn't have a larger arm than mine and this is too large for me. It could be used this way but smaller would be better. They say the large is for people that have a forearm over 12 inches.I don't think I know anyone with an arm that large. But actually mine maybe used to be I don't know

Hello Crafters Ginny - That was quite a feat you pulled off doing all driving and taking care of the tire and making it back before the appointment was over I'm sure your DD appreciates your help and I'm glad she has you. Ruth - Your spareribs sound good, I used to make those sometimes and they come out really well in the crockpot. I went out this morning and ran some errands. I had to renew my Costco membership so I did some shopping in there. I bought a few floor fans that I hope will help cut down on some of the heat this summer. I also received an order from Missouri Star Quilt Company that I had placed last week. I bought two 18 inch pre-printed wholecloth fabrics for hand quilting. It's nice to work on these ones that are already marked. We had some unexpected rain this morning but it wasn't heavy enough that I had any leaking from the ceiling. I haven't heard back from the roofers yet but I'm hoping I'll be on their schedule sometime in the next few weeks. I notice one of my neighbors getting shingles dropped onto their roof today so I guess they will be getting their roof replaced in the next few days. Take care everyone!

CJ, it's good to see you today. I'm glad the rain wasn't enough or hard enough that it leaked into your home. We don't have a Costco here. We do have a Sam's club but haven't been there in years. I'm glad you got the order you placed with the quilt company. You will have more to work on now.
Well I have one of the gloves nearly done for the new pair since I decided not to make the second one to match the one glove I made yesterday. It's looking much better with the smaller hook. It's not so open and won't be as long. I did take a break to have breakfast and to do some of the ribs under the broiler with bbq sauce for dh. He loved the pork, pepper and onion dish with the hoison sauce over rice last night.I was thinking of making the second glove of yesterday's pair and adding it to the donation pile but I think I'll just rip it out and make a while new pair for donating also. It's just too open looking for me. They will make good gloves for the homeless because they go up almost to the elbow and would keep a person's arms nice and warm so I may make a few of them for that purpose. They don't take long except they have a ribbed cuff at the finger end AND the arm end and those take more time than the whole rest of the glove.
OK, back to work

Good evening!
I figure I will probably take 2 posts to get through everything, but thought I would stop in and say hello.
Ruth, yes I think you will find that using the back loops really creates an attractive look - pretty ridges. It makes the pattern look much more difficult than it is! Me too, think I will make that pattern again if I have the occasion to. I would be nice if there was some way to standardize things regarding hook size and patterns. But each of us crochets differently. Guess it would be more useful if pattern “writers” had some way to standardize things, so that novices like me do not get too confused. Glad you have worked things out with the smaller hook and are happy with the results.
Hey CJ- which preprinted fabrics did you get from MSQ? I would love to take a look at them, its just so neat to keep up with what each of us is doing. Is your neighbor getting a new roof using the same company as you? So glad that you were not impacted by the rain and I sure hope you get your roof repair soon!!! I have never been in Costco- but my SIL used to enjoy going to the one near her when they lived up here. We have a BJ’s membership and like that.
Needless to say, I have gotten no crafting in. This am I took the morning off to attend an awards ceremony at Dd’s schooll- she got an award for excellence in student teaching. So happy to go and spend the morning with her.
I started looking at a quilt as you go split rail pattern I have, the quilt that I bought the MSQ fabric for. Well I get so far- and then it makes no sense at all. Guess I will have to see if there is a youtube to get me out of this bind, and if not email my buddy who quilts a LOT to see if she can make any sense out of it.
BBL to see who else checks in Ginny

Hello to all on this Friday afternoon. I hope your Fridays are all going well and that you all have a nice weekend to look forward to
I had a hard time with the ending cuff on the gloves last night. Guess I was just too tired to work on it because I kept doing it wrong and had to rip and rip and rip. Finally got that one done and started the second. I would have had it done except that I quit and was doing something else...something that was actually just a time waster...game on Facebook. so I finished it this morning except that I need to do the two seams. You do it in the round except for the cuffs. I have one cuff done on the first glove so have three more to do but they're short ones. My dilemma of what to do with the first glove like this solved itself. I don't have enough yarn to make a second one to go with that one so will rip it out and make something else with the yarn.
I think that most pattern writers believe their patterns are standardized but on almost all patterns that have a section for comments there are those that say the item turned out too large or too small.
I do hope you can get some help on that quilt. I think that you will eventually figure it out though.Maybe you just needed some time off of working with it.
Meg, it looks on this weather channel that where your are is the only place in the country that's warm right now.We have dry heat here too otherwise I wouldn't be able to stand hot weather. We always had to leave Arkansas and come back here as soon as it got hot there because the humidity was horrible and really drained every bit of energy we had.
CJ, what kind of fun things are you doing today?
