Happy 4th everyone,
I am not doing a lot today. just staying home. I am not sure whether we will have fireworks or not. DGDs BF is coming over and he usually does the fireworks. I have been working on mt waffle b/blanket yesterday and this morning. I have an audio book that I started and I want to listen to it this afternoon while I craft. The book is from the Irish Country Doctor series and I just love them. The story is about the part of Ireland that I am from and the audio book has the accent and the books are funny.
cj, if you are looking for somewhere cooler try the N. coast of California. I would love to live there. My DH and I used to talk about moving there when he retired but I will probably never do that as Janet is here. You would probably not want to move too far away from your family. Something to think about when you move is to be near stores and medical facilities
Ginny, I am sure once school starts again you will start to feel more like a retired person. Right now you are probably still in summer break mode. When do you plan on going to DC?
Phyl. well I decided to count my UFOs and I don't have as many as you. I think I have about 4 but I don't feel like finishing them right now. I am sorry your arthritis is so painful and I don't have any helpful hints for you. I notice it in my hands and wrists.
Ruth, you make my head spin you have so many projects and I can't keep up with you. I don't really like kits sand I notice that the e-mails I get from Lion Brand offer mostly kits if you want the pattern. I do buy a lot of their yarn.

Just a quick check in in case I do not get here later.
CJ- how are you holding up in this heat?? Yes, I know moving is a huge undertaking. It will force you to go through your belongings, and make some tough decisions on what to keep and what to remove from your life. Perhaps if you found a new location/home to get excited about, it would be easier! How wise of you to have that peony in a pot, ready to journey with you whereever you go.
Phyl-oh my a bucket list with 29 items on it??? Great idea to get at least a good chunk of the charity items done now- ready for donation in the fall! As much fun as gift items are, sometimes its just nice to work on something that is for someone you love or yourself. Hope you enjoyed your breakfast.
Ruth, so you will find those appliques in with your crochet hooks....remember that is here I put my daughters wedding rings!!! ha ha ha. Hope that you and DH get to see a lovely fireworks display tonight- and that the skies and view are clear. So tell me, how many times will I have to start this scarf over until I get it right?
Started the mountain land scarf, and well, right now I have to rip out these first 3 rows and start over. I can sort of see where it is going, but messed up and am not meeting the stitch count mentioned. Try try try again.
I am sick of hot weather. With the heat and humidity its oppressive. Think Dh and I will watch a movie tonight. And perhaps I will work on the scarf again. Ginny

Meg, I am smiling about the book you are reading! What a comfort that must be to you , and a good reminder of where you came from, many thousands of miles away. I hope its a long series for you to enjoy for a long time. Lord knows I do not feel retired yet. Still feel as though I have many many different responsibilities and am only getting a slight break in not having to work.

Meg, those books sound like something you do truly enjoy. Nothing like taking you back home even if it's just in a novel I've read a few novels that were based here in my state and it was fun recognizing the places named so for you and it being back in Ireland it must have been so much more enjoyable.
Well Ginny, I know I ripped it out quite a few times. The things I found that helped were that 1) you chain 3 after everything but the 3dc clusters. And the ohter was that in the beginning of row 2, after you do the 3dc's in the one space and it says to sc in the next ch 3 space, Make sure you're going into the correct space which is the one RIGHT before the line of 5 double crochets in the middle. And same at the end,,make sure the sc is in the right space which should then be the last chain space before the last 3 double crochets.I wish I lived near so I coulld show you, having been thru all the trauma of starting it myself. Once you do get past that 2nd row, if it's right, it's a breeze. In fact now since I started the second scarf this morning I'm finding it to be so easy that I could almost do it with my eyes closed. You must have been working on it while I was working on mine because I was thinking of you being stuck in that one place while I was crocheting. I have a little under half of mine done but had to stop and do some other things so I might get it done yet tonight.
We probably won't watch the fireworks because I don't think dh will be awake and they're kind of blah fireworks anyway and then there's the mosquitoes. If he's awake I'll watch them with him

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today and that you enjoyed your holiday yesterday I had such a nice surprise last night around 8:00 P.M. I heard a lot of neighbors putting off fireworks (even though they are illegal here) so I looked out my back door and I had the best view of fireworks going off over some trees. This neighbor put off the fireworks for almost an hour and they were just beautiful. I hadn't seen fireworks in person for many years, so it was just a treat for me and I enjoyed it so much. I haven't been doing much else right now, but hopefully I'll get back to some piecing so I can finish that Solstice quilt top. I'm also on a mission to find some more rhubarb before it goes out of season. If I can't find it at the stores I may try some of the Farmer's Markets that are around on the weekend. Take care everyone!

CJ, what a great surprise to have your own local fireworks display. I too haven't been to an actual fireworks event since back in2000 although I used to work on July4th every year for the last probably 10 years of working. I worked in the evening and the city put on the fireworks display and when looking out the hospital windows or from the parking structure you got a first hand view of them. Last time I did that was 15 years ago yesterday which was my last day of work. I decided that evening that I wasn't going to work anymore and called the director of nursing and told her.So today is the anniversary of the first day of my freedom
I don't know how long rhubarb is good. I know the plants keep producing more stalks all summer but the ones I cut in the fall didn't taste good at all. I think the spring and beginning of summer is when you get the best ones. In our stores here the rhubarb is what I consider very expensive for what you get. I haven't seen frozen rhubarb in any of our stores in years. They used to have it.
I was so excited yesterday when I went out to water my plants... I have tomatoes!!! Also my rose bush is not as bad off as I had thought from the deer trying to eat it. I don't think it will produce anymore roses this year but I have hopes that it will survive to produce again next year. I need to get out and make a cage all around it.

Ruth, thanks so much for the heads up on the scarf pattern. I did see that there is one note on the instructions regarding that 3dc’s. I will rip out my 3 rows and start over...hoping that now it will make more sense to me. The pattern appears to have some very open spots....but looks to be very pretty. And the yarn is so very soft. Congrats on the anniversary of your retirement too!!!! So happy for you that you have tomatoes, hope that the deer do not eat the plants too- here in NY deer do eat tomatoes. How are your zuccini plants doing?
CJ- well what a lovely surprise to have an hour firework display and you did not even have to leave home!!! I am so happy for you- bet it really warmed your heart to see that. Here in NY I saw rhubarb at the farmers market this past tuesday, think it was $4.99 a pound, which is much cheaper than the supermarkets. Unfortunately for me, the deer have decided to eat those plants too. Doubt we will have any next year as the deer are killing the plants. Hope you can get back to piecing that solstice quilt top!!
Got my walk in and then Dh and I went out to get some clothes for our trip. Its still hot here, they say rain for tomorrow. Sure hope so. Ginny

The deer here love tomatoes too including the plants but I have my plants in containers and have them very close to the house where the deer don't have the nerve to approach. I thought maybe they didn't like rhubarb since they ate my rose bush and didn't touch the rhubarb which is right beside the rose bush (yes it sounds strange rose bush right near rhubarb). My zucchini plants are growing well thank you. They have lots of blossoms. There is, as usual, no sign of a zucchini though. I imagine this year will be the same as always...no zucchini even though the plants grow well. At least they're very pretty.
Wow the price of rhubarb sure is high in your area. I thought it was expensive here but it's $2.99/lb.
Yes the openings in the scarf look large while you're making it but when it's done they really don't look large at all. When you start that third row and skip over to make that sc in the chain 3 space it's going to seem like you're skipping way too many of your stitches but you really aren't. Go ahead and skip over and you'll see how that works and that it doesn't really leave a big opening as it seems like it would do.When you do the next row it pulls it all together. There aren't any mistakes in the pattern so trust it. When I started and had to rip out several times I thought I was going to have to give up. And when I started this second scarf yesterday I was also thinking that I was going to tell you to make sure you started it at home and got used to it before you took it to work on in the car
When do you go on the trip? Did you get some awesome clothes to take while you were out?

Good morning! Yes, Ruth our tomatoes are on the deck, where the deer have thankfully not figured out how to cllimb stairs. If they could, I am sure the deer would have eaten them also. I wonder what the mystery is with zucchini in your yard and why you get blossoms but no fruit. I know you have said that this has happened many times before..lets hope that this year breaks that pattern and you get zucchini. I do appreciate the input on the scarf, which I did not work on last night.
Dh got some pants and shirts and a belt. I got 3 blouses, and a pair of shoes. We went to Kohls, so with this purchase we “earned” $50 in Kohls cash! I will be using that next week to pick up some other items I might need.
My crafting story of the day.....my girlfriend (the one I gave the sewing machine to) son is getting married this weekend. Her granddaughter (age 2) will be in the bridal party- they picked up an adorable but very plain white dress for her to wear and the intent was to add a blue ribbon to the waist- to match the bridal party’s dresses. (The 2 year olds mom is in the bridal party). Well, the bride only a day or so ago informed everyone that the wrong ribbon was ordered or something like that. Panic set in......my girlfriend last night called me, asking if I had any ribbon. Well, I have “inherited” all kinds of fabric and sewing notions from a friend who moved, a neighbor who moved and my mom. Plus that I did sew dresses for my own Dd’s. So last night, I got out everything I thought could work....gave it to my friend who took the ribbon home to see what worked.Bingo! They are taking a really pretty white lace ribbon (that conveniently has large holes in the lace) and weaving in some blue lace seam binding.....and it makes for a lovely no sew ribbon to put on the little girls waist with a bow. Guess that was my crafting for the day!! Oh, I must add, while looking through my stash, I got out the pattern for the table runner and the charm pack I need to make it with. Think that might be my next project. I need to hear the hummmmm of my sewing machine.
Our trip is in a few weeks. Dd and Ds will be home while we are gone....yes I will have that scarf figured out before then so I can work on it in the car..
Its still crazy hot and humid here, 79 degrees at 7:15 am. Yuck. Lord knows I hate to wish my life away, but fall weather sure sounds lovely right now.
Prayers for those kids and their rescuers trapped in Thailand.

Ginny, that is amazing and great that you found the perfect ribbon for the little girl's dress. When situations like that come up for me, I usually know that I have certain things but then am unable to find them until the need or event is over. And yes you did a lot of crafting.
Just one more thing about the scarf, I finally laid the first one out to actually measure accurately. I had just used a 12 inch ruler and folded as I measured and evidentally lost a few inches of measure by doing that because the first scarf is actually 80 inches!!!! I don't know if I'll take some out or not It won't be easy finding the end that is woven in. I usually do a good job at weaving in so there's no chance of it coming apart and therefore when I need to take out that woven in end it's really a challenge. The second scarf is already 78 inches so I'll stop there and have quite a bit of yarn left in that skein. That's what made me stop and measure accurately...the scarf seemed to be getting so long with so much yarn still left.
Well it's hot today here too and tomorrow high of 101 according to last evening's weather forecast. That's the real temp not the heat index but since we don't have much humidity the heat index will probably be the same as the temp or even a couple degrees lower.
It sounds like you got some good clothing items and a good bargain in that Kohl's cash.
CJ what do you have planned for the weekend.
Meg, hope you are doing well. Will you be going to knitwits today?

hi girls, ok ruth do you have any bees around your neck of the woods? the bees have gotten a virsues and they are not as plentiful in some places. we don't have to many bees. so what don does is pollinate our cuckes .he takes a q tip and some how puts it in the in the male cucumber flower and then goes to the female cukes. google pollinating zuchnini and see if that helps.
don went to get a haircut and so I can't ask him now.also it could be your soil.
is their
today was wi. lost 1.8 finally after so many weeks.becki announce july 15th you have to wear socks or shoes to wi. no more paper towels.on the scales. stating health reasons.
I still have not got my playpen in order. woke up at 4 yesterday. could not go back to sleep darn it.I was not good the rest of the day.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today It's still hot here and humid, but supposed to be much nicer in the 80s this weekend. I went to four grocery stores this week looking for rhubarb and never found any, so I think I'll go to a few farm markets tomorrow and check them out. I might also be able to get some nice vegetables, even though it's still a bit early in the season for them. I haven't been doing any crafting, but always enjoy reading about what you all are doing.

Thank you PHyl, I actually do that but I don't know which are the male flowers and which are the female ones so I put pollen on all of them. Still doesn't seem to work. I did that last year with some habenero peppers that we grew inside and didn't get peppers either but the plant was nice. We do have bees but I don't know if they get to the zucchini plants or not. The nights here are too cold to grow peppers outdoors. And you're right about the soil too. It's not good but I also had this same problem back in NY.
Congratulations on the weight loss. Yes I heard that everyone will have to wear socks or shoes after the 15th.Some people are pretty upset about that but It will only increase the person's weight the first week then they can wear the same shoes or socks every week and it won't matter. I always weighed with my shoes on. a person could get a light pair of bedroom slippers and change right before they got on the scale.
Well I did venture out to water my plants and I think that tomorrow dh will go out very early and water before the heat starts rising.
My problem is almost always actually getting to sleep in the first place. Sorry you work so early and couldn't get back to sleep. Kinda ruins the whole day doesn't it?

CJ, just as I was hitting the button to go to where the other thread I post on is I saw your post pop up. Yes going to a farmer's market sounds like a great idea. They should have a lot of early things now including rhubarb unless it's too late for it. It sounds like the weather is also going to be conducive to going out there.
Last night I finished the second of mountain land scarves...mentioned that already about the length. Then I started a stuffed kitty. I got all the parts done last night and just have to do the eyes and whiskers and stuff and sew it. Then I'll go on to the next thing on my list which is a makeup bag for the next birthday girl. That's what I'm going to practice sewing in a lining and zipper on.

Cj- up here- about 2 weeks later in the growth season than you are, we are seeing local vegetables- not a lot, but lettuces, some soft squash, rhubarb, beets etc.....keep looking I figure you will find rhubarb! Hope you do get cooler temps and can enjoy opening the windows and fresh air.
Phyl, well there is nothing preventing anyone from wearing socks and flip flops- which contribute next to no weight. Guess you could change to your flip flops at the meeting just before you weigh in. I know how frustrating it is- I used to hate it in winter when I would have to switch from summer clothes to more fabric clothes/winter weight clothes. Anyway, congrats on the loss. Glad noone was hurt at the fireworks- sounds like it was quite an ordeal.
Ruth, congrats on completeing the second mountain land scarf....I have not even started mine !(other than that attempt at the first 3 rows). Wish you had some rain in the forcast so that you would not have to water your plants. Its a real labor of love and hard to keep up with when the weather gets really hot.
Hope Meg checks in and that she had a good day.
I slept poorly last night....and so took a nap mid day. Now I am wide awake- will read for awhile and see if that tires me out. Ginny
