The first place I went to WW was in a rented space in a Best Western.

My first meeting was also in 1975 in the basement of a church. I did get to lifetime through those meetings....then I moved and stopped going to meetings....the weight came back plus some. I needed the accountability of official weigh ins, not sure I could do it online on my own.

My first meeting was in 1966 (yeah I'm that old) held in a community center. All my meetings have been in rented spaces. I will be very disappointed if meetings close because I need the accountability of weighing on their scale

I first attended meetings in rented space in an Elks Club. When I worked for WW as a receptionist, I worked in a weird sort of training space under a gym (OMG the smell), a conference room in a big motor inn, the proverbial church basement, and once I subbed at a sports type place with a shooting range. Long time ago!

The first mtg. I attended was in the "community room" of a department store. Locations where I've attended meetings or worked for WW include centers in strip malls, church basements, a community center in a city park, an African-American cultural center, a synagogue, the party room of a restaurant, a YMCA, a university classroom, and probably a few other places I can't recall.

My first ww meeting was held in a middle school that was closed due to asbestos.
Omgosh... thinking about that now, how crazy was that?

I first went to a meeting in the basement of my church. They closed that one. I now work in the basement of another church.
We are averaging 42 people a meeting, still getting 1-2 new enrollments each week, however we could be in danger of closing.
We have too many free LT and we don't sell enough product. They want us to sell an average of $7/person. While we have some people that buy more than that every week, most of our people don't buy anything.
If they close this site, I don't think I'll bother working another one. It cost almost as much in gas as I make each week. But I love my leader and our members.

I believe that they violated core beliefs in opening the WW stores to begin with. It used to be short term subleases and church basements. Now, they carry real liabilities that new GAAP requirements will force onto their balance sheet.
That said - meetings aren't going the way of the dodo. Territories have gotten larger as they consolidate overhead and the number of meetings has gone down as they're re-embraced the wisdom of 50 people in one meeting instead of 3 x 20.
My TM pinged me the other day because I'm not subbing enough. I told her that it doesn't make financial sense to drive the 90 miles from my corner of the territory to the opposite as they'd lose money paying for me to be in the car all that time. So, maybe the territory has gotten too big.

You get paid for travel? Boy, we never got a dime for travel. We didn't even get paid for the time to attend required staff meetings; but that changed when someone complained to the Feds, then they grudgingly paid us for 2 hours and mandated that the meetings be no longer with that. What? Shorter meetings? Nobody complained about THAT!

Much has changed, Mike.
We get time and mileage now. So, imagine if I were in the car for 3 hours round-trip *plus* mileage reimbursement and tolls. Add that to meeting pay, and WW probably loses in the deal if I sub that meeting instead of someone who lives closer.
Yes. The territory is that big. I live in the southeast corner. Most meetings centers are weighted west and northwest.

My first meetings were At Work meetings in 1991. At that time I think there were at least two, or maybe more, at my work location. Gradually it dwindled down and I'm not even sure they even have any At Work meetings there any more. I got to goal and Lifetime. When I came back to WWers it was at a strip mall location.

IIRC most of my meetings have been either in strip malls or storefronts with apartments above.
My very favorite one was in the meeting room of a lovely church. The setting was beautiful, so peaceful and calm walking the grounds up to the meeting room.
Loved my leader too---a retired teacher, cancer survivor, all-around inspiring down-to-earth woman with a wicked sense of humor. After many years she quit and I saw her once at a meeting and she explained that she couldn't stand all the corporate stuff that was coming down on the center. She was done trying to buck the system. Everyone missed her terribly when she left. I attended sporadically when another leader took over and gave the new one a chance but....no. It was not working for so many reasons and that was the end. The church center eventually closed. I did a meeting search and it seems they moved to another church nearby. Not as pretty a setting as the old meeting place, a sterile white block building, and they are down to two meetings per week. My old church center had at least six per week.
I haven't been to a meeting where I live now for at least three months and see no reason to go back except curiosity. The leader was pretty good but I am sure she is out on maternity leave now as she was ready to burst the last time I saw her. Honestly, I flip-flop between meetings and online and online is cheaper and I may keep paying for online just to see what happens.

I flip-flop between meetings and online and online is cheaper and I may keep paying for online just to see what happens. You won't have any trouble figuring out what is going on even if you aren't a member. The drama will play out here and online. I really regret joining even for three months - I was unimpressed, talk about the Emperor Has No Clothes.
