Funny you mention the fingerless gloves, Ruth. My friend sent me a picture of her wearing hers this morning....its cold here in the mid 30’s.

Oh that's great. It's wonderful when people let us know that they actually use the things we make for them. Sounds like you got our weather from last week. It's now 60 here.
Well I started the headband. The pattern writer said chain 80. Well you would have to have an awfully large head to be able to wear a headband made that large. It's huge. And I think I've finally figured out what she's talking about then she says dc in first fpdc, fpdc in first fpdc...if she had said "in the same stitch" it would have made it clearer.and then she mentions dc in the last fpdc which will be behind the last fpdc you made...well it's not really behind and where you need to make the dc is right beside the fpdc not behind it. So hopefully I have it right although I do have the prayer shawl so if this headband doesn't work I still have the biggest and best thing I made for her.
Have a great day everyone.

Hello Crafters Ginny - I'm sorry to hear you are getting a cold, hope you are able to knock it off quickly. I'm glad to hear you bought your fabrics for the class and I always have more fun at the fabric store when I'm shopping with someone else, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. Ruth - I hope you can get everything together so you can go to the post office. You've really had some weather swings there. WARNING - Long story ahead I had every intention of going shopping for the curtains today, but when I woke up and took a look outside the house I saw that my mailbox had been knocked down (I guess in the night or early morning). This is hardly the first time it's happened, we've lived here a long time and the road is busy and there have been many times it was knocked down. The last time it happened when my father was still living he put a steel beam in the sidewalk where the mailbox is. He'd been waiting years to put that in because he was tired of replacing the mailbox post all the time. I thought for sure a car couldn't knock down that heavy steel beam and it didn't, but it bent it and twisted it badly. There's no way I can get that steel beam straightened and it's cemented into the sidewalk, so it would be difficult to remove. I was able to take some cord and lash the mailbox around the post, so I have something up there for now, but I have to find a better solution. I was thinking that if I could get a wooden container built that would slide over the bent beam, then I could attach the mailbox on top of it. I thought about getting a brick column post, but I know it will be knocked down again, just like many of my neighbors have been. It's just so frustrating dealing with things like this when I'm on my own. I might have to ask some family members for some help. And it really makes me mad that someone does something like this and then doesn't even leave contact info. The car must have been almost totaled because there was a tire and pieces of the car strung out along the sidewalk. I don't know if I mentioned about a month or so back that another car ran up into my yard and took out part of a split rail fence we have in the front yard. I'm getting tired of living on this busy road. I know it's time for me to get out of here, I really need to get moving on getting the house cleared out so I can go. Thanks for reading The weather here is beautiful though, in the 60s and sunny. I'm enjoying that and having the blinds open to let the sun in the house. Take care everyone!

CJ- gee I am so very very sorry that you have had such a challenging day! Perhaps its time to chat with a realtor, just to see what the real value of your house is worth so you can make intelligent decisions. That being said, I know moving is surely not something that anyone looks forward to doing....its a ton of work and you face most of that work by yourself. Plus you would be leaving your family home, full of memories, both good and bad. It really really stinks that you have problems with cars running into your yard. And stinks even more that this took place without anyone admitting to the damage. Its ok, glad you felt comfortable enough to share your long story with us.
HOW frustrating Ruth!!! Hope you figured out what the designer intended with the headband, but did not manage to articulate well
Long day babysittiing....hope to stop in later to say hello G

I had a reply typed and it disappeared so I'll try a do over.
CJ, I really feel for you. It's hard to have this type of thing happen but especially so when you're alone and have no one to discuss solutions with. I hope your family does help. I wish we were close so we could help. I do think that you're right in thinking it's about time for that move you've been thinking about. It sounded as though you were planning on buying again. Is that the case? Apartments are not an investment but they can relieve you from worrying about maintenance costs...sometimes I guess depending on the owner.Sometimes even houses turn out to not be a good investment also though. I hope you can find something at a good cost and somewhere safe.I'm glad you were creative and able to figure out at least a temporary fix.
I often think about what I would take if my dh were to pass away and I moved...which I would definitely do. I'd take my sewing machine and yarns and a couple pieces of furniture but most furniture would go. then I'd get together the basic kitchen stuff and my good dishes. Since I'd be buying a new bed I'd get rid of all the linens I have and get two new sets. I'd keep just a few towels. I'd either give all this stuff to my kids or call the Salvation Army or whoever would be willing to come and get it all. I'd have my ds come here with a rental truck and take back all the tools, etc that he wanted then give the rest to my neighbor.I'd also give all the stash of food, laundry detergent, tp, etc to dd or ds and just keep enough for a much shorter time.Spices are probably all outdated anyway so they'd go in the trash. All of dh's clothes and a lot of mine would also to to SA or GW.We have a large collection of shampoos and body lotions and body wash that could all go but a couple bottles. I'd get a few essential tools together and I've pretty much decided on what pieces in my collections I'd keep which isn't many. And the first thing to go in the trash would be all these video tapes we have which neither of us has watched in years but Mr Pack Rat doesn't want to part with them
Had a problem with the pattern. Guess the writer is not good at math. She said multiple of 10 so she said chain 80 (which, as I said is way too big) but actually it's a multiple of 10 plus 4. the repeating pattern across ends with 4 dc's and she has one set of 4 dc at the beginning. I guess she forgot about the extra 4. I struggled with the pattern for way too long before I stopped to check the math.

Hi everyone, it has been a slow day though I did do some laundry. Sometimes I get nerve cramps in my legs an I had an attack last night. Nerve cramps are worse than muscle cramps. So I didn't get a lot of sleep luckily I had some prescription pain meds which helped me eventually get to sleep. I haven't been crafting and I need to get busy. The weather is much cooler which I enjoy. No more rain but I am sure there will be more soon.
cj, sorry about your mail box and I hope you can get it fixed. I know it is difficult having to find people to do repairs. I used to have people I could call on to do small jobs and I am trying to find a handyman. I used to find people who advertised in those free neighbor news papers but I don't see them anymore. I suppose people check the internet now. I have a few small jobs that need to be taken care of. DS is not a great handyman though he does what he can when he has time. cj, if you talked to a realtor they might have some ideas about clearing out your house. After all they will want to list it for you and they often have people who do odd jobs for them. It would be nice if you had an apt or condo where you could relax and not worry about repairs and all the problems you have with a house. Good luck making a decision.
Ginny. I have not been doing a good job keeping up with everyone. I see you do a lot of baby sitting your DGkids which I am sure you enjoy I just hope you have some time to enjoy yourself and relax.
Ruth, I hope all is well with you and I am glad to see you are keeping up with all your projects.
Now I am off to bed and I hope you all sleep well tonight.

Good afternoon!
This will be short....ha ha ha.....got a few more things I want to take care of this afternoon.
Phyl- I checked out that Judy Neimeyer (I misspelled her name) and the desert sky pattern is gorgeous!!! Take your time, and perhaps they will give you some extra time or help if needed.
Ruth- funny we have those video tapes here too....good that you have a game plan to get rid of stuff-not wishing any misfortune on you or Dh but sometimes just knowing what needs to go makes the process easier. Perhaps Dh will permit small areas to get cleared out. THat sure stinks that the pattern was messed up. Again, I say if anyone could figure out the pattern it would be you. Congrats
Meg, what a blessing that you have cooler weather!! Glad you can enjoy that. As far as handymen go, ask around at a local hardware store (if you still have one) or Lowes or Home Depot. They usually have lists of people they recommend.
Hope CJ is enjoying her day....oh....there are companies that help get rid of items from you home. I doubt that is something you would want to do because of the personal nature of what you have but its an idea.
Dh and I got our flu shots. Ran a bunch of errands this am. Had to send some items UPS- and the local UPS agent refused to take them so I have to take them to the real UPS store, several towns away. What a pain. I will do that next week. Thankfully my errand at the post office went very well.
Ok gotta fold some laundry. Ginny

Hello all and good afternoon to you too Ginny.
I just finished helping dh with some things in the so called family room, taking fans out to the storage shed and getting rid of yard debri aka dead plants. Now to throw in some laundry and clear out the dining room so that I can use the table for my fleece blankets. I'm also working on a list of my next crochet projects and I think finishing all the baby blankets I have done but no edging is a good thing to work on. Then I can somehow get rid of them or pack them away for the grandchildren to use if and when they have children...Of course 3 of the 14 do already each have a child...one got a blanket.I promised my ds' oldest daughter that I was going to make everyone a baby blanket to put away for the future. Then there's always the safe house, the mission, and the place that provides temporary apartments for single parents that are in need. And also the hospital and clinic where people give birth or have given birth and have no baby clothing for their infant. Many times it's their own fault but that doesn't mean we should let infants freeze because their parents have "issues"
Meg, it's so good to see you. I know you donate blankets and I'm sure they're greatly appreciated.I'm glad you're enjoying cooler weather.
Phyl. good to see you too and I hope you won't be disappointed once you get to that class that you're dreading going to.
Ok, off to do some work
Ginny, sorry you have to travel so far to ship things. I avoid the UPS stores because they charge extra and I haven't been to the "real" UPS for quite awhile because, although it's right here in town it's off the beaten path and not somewhere I usually go however now since the post office closed it's in store location I may as well drive the extra distance. I don't know if it would be less expensive than the post office or not and the last time I shipped something there they had to open my boxes and dig thru. I hate that. I pack things very carefully so don't like them disrupted
Now off to work

First of all, Meg, I wanted to tell you I will pray for you that those nerve cramps go away very soon and never come back. It sure does not sound like a good thing, and must be very very painful. Will pray that you rest well tonight....
Gee, Ruth, I gotta laugh. The package I sent by the postal service is the most poorly packed thing I have ever sent!! I had to get this mailed, and had little time to take good care of it. Unless they maul the box it should be just fine. (As contrasted by you taking great care in packing things). I was also concerned about how much this item would cost to ship- I did not want it to cost a fortune. And I was expecting to have to pay for the other box (going UPS), so it all worked out for me. The USPS box was not costly at all....and I am sure will arrive just fine even though I did a crummy job packing it. The UPS box I will take to them on Wednesday- I am sort of in that area as I am getting my hair cut. According to Direct TV, whose hardware I am returning, UPS will pack the stuff and has an account with them, and will pay for the shipping. Its a heavy box, and will not be cheap to send.
Totally agree that its not a baby’s fault that it was born to hard circumstances. WHo knows what a difference a nice hand made blanket or afghan might make.....and it might be the only hand made item that child ever has. There are many good charities to donate to....I am sure you know the best in your area.
Oh, and by the way, going back to Ruths post....I was trying to figure shipping costs earlier and the web site I saw indicated that if it was a smaller weight item, the Postal service was almost always cheaper.
Got a nice fire in the firepit now....its a dark but pleasant evening. Still we have some night bugs....even though temps went into the low 30’s last nite. I pulled in that darned orange tree today, and now have just one more plant a giant aloe to bring in. Guess that will have to wait till tomorrow.
I will be going inside soon, hope to get some work done on the ornament I am working on.
Have a great night all Ginny

I'm smiling at your reference to aloe plants. I started out here with one little aloe that I got at a grocery store and became overrun with them. I still have the mother plant I think but I had to start throwing some away because I just ended up with way too many even though I also gave some away. I think.... I have no idea why my font has changed and is underlined...just started doing it by itself and I tried some things to put it back to regular and it only made it worse so back to this one. ....anyway....I think we must have been on the same USPS site. I was searching to find out what dimensions they consider too large in a box. When I sent the Dish network hardware back they sent me a box to put it in and it had packing materials inside. It had a prepaid label so after I got it packed up I waved the UPS driver down, as he comes by here almost every day or did when the people next door had a business...they're retired not so he doesn't come that often. But he happily took the box.. when I needed to return the Cable company's hardware I just took it to their office because it was right here in town. I was wondering about returning DTV equipment if they sent the box and packing material or if you had to provide your own because every year there's a question of whether or not I'm going to keep them.
I did get a bunch of things done but as much as I'd hoped to finish. Still things are looking better and two loads of laundry are done...well second is in the dryer. I haven't done any crafting today except for putting away yarn that I was finished with and still had sitting in my "office". I am thinking of starting my dgs' afgan. I'm not sure I'm going to get the effect I want from the two yarns I'm planning to use. I may have to go to Walmart and buy some With Love yarn that they started selling there again but I'm going to try it and see how it looks in this yarn I have.

Ruth , Is there something in the air? The keyboard on my iPad is frozen, so now I’m responding on the phone. What kind of Afghan do you want to make for your son? What colors?

The afgan that I'm going to make him is one by Lion Brand called two color afgan. I made one for my dh and also made a baby blanket with this same pattern. Both were beautiful. I made the regular one for my dh for Christmas one year. He saw me making it and said he loved it and wondered if it was for him so he knew his present early. This time I want to make it in a bulky yarn and what I have is dark brown...a chocolate color and the other color will be kind of a variegated one..It's lion Brand woolspun and color is called quarry print. which is a gray, white, tan, and black. the grays in it are light gray and dark gray. I just held them together and they do look good so definitley am going to start the afgan and see for sure but I think it will be good.the only bad thing about this pattern is that it comes out so small. I made the one for dh 1 1/2 times larger than the pattern calls for and it was still not all that large but I think with the bulky yarn if I make a chain of 201 instead of 169 it should end up a good size. This is for my son's oldest...the one that is in Taiwan right now.I make a lot of things for the girls, not much for the guys
As you see, for some reason the print fixed itself I hope your iphone did too
Ginny, it's great you got to sit outside with a fire in the firepit again. We had freezing weather all last week and today when we were out in the yard we saw that there are still several kinds of insects buzzing around.

Gonna be short......lord Knows what happened with my keyboard last night but all it wanted to do was write in caps and then freeze.
Ruth, checked out both the yarn and the pattern and I think it will be striking!!! A very masculine but tasteful afghan....I am sure you will be able to adjust the pattern to make the afghan a larger size for DGS. When are you hoping to finish it? (Hope you have the yarn in the house, if now I know you will find a sale)
Dh is going to Lowes later on tonight to help Dd shop for supplies for her bathroom. He gets a veterans discount so that will save her a lot. THink I will make another fire then and try to do my homework for my quilting class. Will probably throw in another load of laundry as I do not like doing work like that on Sunday if I can help it.

Ginny, that veteran's discount comes in really handy. I guess your dd is still working on the remodeling of their new house. Those things take time and sometimes you wonder if it's worth it but I would think she would be there for a lot of years to come so I'm sure it will be. Were you able to work on the ornament last night? When is the quilt class again...next Tuesday? Good idea to get everything ready. I hear you about working on Sunday. Guess I was raised in a different age than most people because I don't even like to shop on Sunday. I was surprised when my brother and his family were here and he took us all to Walmart to shop after church. He's a pastor. I like that Hobby Lobby is closed on Sunday. We need to bring back a family day which is why they are closed.
When I made this same afgan for dh I made it 1 1/2 times larger... I think I mentioned that already..sorry for the repeat. That's where the 169 stitches comes in. so with making it 31 chains larger and with the bulky yarn should make it about double the size the pattern says the final size would be. I think though, whatever size it ends up will be fine. DGs loves to read so he can use it to cover himself if he gets cold reading or for decorating his room either at home or if he ends up going away to college or when he has his own place.
I'm working down my list for today. Some of the things I can't do right now because dh is napping so will do them later. I'm kicking myself because I think I threw away all my polybags that things came in in the mail. I saved them forever. Now I wanted to put that shawl in one and I haven't found any but I do have one more place to look when dh gets up.I have apples simmering for my apple crisp. We like the apple mushy, and I have potatoes peeled and sitting in water for dinner.I think that most things are packed for our overnight trip on Tues. I need to write two letter and I can do that now.
See you all later
