Hi all. I had my nap. It was a fairly short one because I want to be able to sleep tonight
CJ, if you want your apple cake to be more spicy, get some fresh ginger, peel ( a spoon works great for this) and keep the leftover in the freezer. Grate about a teaspoon and add that to your cake. It makes it delicious.
My aunt one time gave me a recipe for Shenandoah Valley apple cake and it was delicious but I never thought to put in the fresh ginger. It would have made it even better
Ginny, I don't know about CJ but I'd love the recipe for the cupcakes.
Now I'm going to eat and then crochet. See you all later

Phyl, will absolutely pray for you that somehow the Lord works this out. Makes total sense that you are not exposed to someone with a cold....and should do all you can to protect yourself. In Nita’s defense, perhaps she is at the end of the cold. (this is how my body responds). I get the cold....and all the mucus.....and then feel absolutely fine- except I develop a tickle cough to get rid of the mucus. I swear I am not at all contagious at that point. (Perhaps Ruth can weigh in on that). Anyway, Nita might out of respect for you decide not to go. I hope and pray it all works out. Ruth, you have plenty of time to crochet now that you are home! . Glad it all worked out with the weather and that you got home just fine. No place like home!!! CJ- what colors have you been using as your theme for the solstice quilt, and what border/s have you selected? Think that is a great idea to set a goal, that perhaps maybe you can finish it by Thanksgiving.. Will you send it to the long armer then? Meg- are those nerve cramps all over for you? I sure hope so! Glad you have been reading a lot, and also getting some knitting done. Its funny how in some families, birthdays seem to cluster. We have any later December birthdays.... So good to hear that you are enjoying cooler weather, and are able to get some housework done. So this am Dh and I went to the local lake for our walk- then I went to get my hair done. I thought I was running late for my hair, and when I got close realized that I had moved the appointment from Tuesday to today and that the Wednesday appointment was at 9:30. Pfew! Plenty of time. So I stopped in the bread outlet, got a cup of coffee....and was on time to get my hair done. After that I had to return our Direct Tv recievers to UPS. So I drove to the UPS depot- the central shipping location for the county, who would not take them.......but they told me to go tot he other side of the county to go to the UPS STORE! What? Drove to the UPS store, and thankfully they took the recievers. Well that got me close to Walmart and Joanns and Kohls- I had some Kohls cash (used that up!), and needed some supplies for my quilting class from Joanns. Took care of that too...and finished in Walmart. I got a lot done but got back home almost 2 hours later than I had hoped to. Now will finish the cutting for my class, and perhaps start piecing the strips together. Nice to get some crafting time in. Hope everyone has a good evening. Ginny

Apple pie cupcakes with Cinnamon Buttercream 1pkg yellow cake mix (regular size) 2 Tbs butter 4 cups peeled and finely chopped tart apples (about 4). 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 Tbs cornstarch 1Tbs water
Frosting 1 cup butter, softened 3 cups confectioners sugar 2 Tbs heavy whipping cream (I used milk instead and it worked fine) 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1. Prepare and bake cake mix according the the package directions for the cupcakes. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely
2. In a large skillet, heat butter over medium heat. Add Apples and brown sugar, cook until apples are tender (10 to 12 minutes). Mix the cornstarch and water ans stir into the pan. Bring to a boil and stir until thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat and cool completely.
3.Using a paring knife, cut a 1 inch wide cone shaped piece from the top of each cupcake. (I found a grapefruit spoon worked great for this). Fill the cavity with the apple mixture.
4.In a large bowl, combine all frosting ingredients and beat until smooth. Frost cupcakes as desired.
1 cupcake has 300 calories, 15 g fat (7 gm sat fat), 48 mg cholesterol, 221 mg sodium, 41 g carb (32 g sugars, 1 fg fiber, 1 g protein.
We loved these cupcakes. Easy to make....taste great. G

nita's has not turned into a cold yet.just coughing.maybe blowing nose. this is how mary jo's started out.mj had the aches and pains with hers.
maybe nita just has a dry cough.
I know with winter on the way and everything going around the day will come when I ca't avoid catcignagerm.
I think my concern is more being in a closed car for 2 hours, going and coming. also from the quilt show to a quilt shop and home again if she would be congestous.
thank you for your prayers. maybe I am concerned over nothing. time will tell. phyl

Hello everyone, Started out the day by taking some greeting cards and yarn over to Janet's work shop. They can use the cards and yarn for arts and crafts. Spent the afternoon doing odds and ends. Filled out my ballot and will drop it off on Friday when I go to knit wits. They have a drop box for ballots at the library. It was a very nice day and I am really enjoying the cooler weather. Tomorrow I will have my heat and air serviced it is getting chilly here in the a.m.
phyl, I hope your friend will be considerate and not cough all over you. I will keep you in my prayers.
Ruth, I am glad that you and your DH had a good trip and that your are safely home.
cj, baking in the fall when the apples are ready to harvest is always a good to bake and enjoy apple cake and apple pie. I love the smell.
Ginny, I always get my flu shot, better than getting the flu. DS wont get a flu shot so I hope he doesn't get sick. Thanks for the cup cake recipe looks good perhaps I will give it a try. I love most anything with apples. Though at this time of year I have to keep an eye on what I eat. Too many tempting goodies around.
I am off to my room to read and probably knit.
Have a good night.

Phyl, I definitely will be praying but please don't worry and feel dumb using your mask. Your actual life could be at stake. Not that I want to scare you because that probably woldn't happen but very serious complications can occur even with a cold when you're on meds that suppress the immune system. So in cold and flu season you'd be smart to use the mask all the time. Some people do.
Ginny, thank you for the recipe, It looks delicious. Definitely something I might make to take for Thanksgiving dinner. And it sounds like you had another busy but profitable day. Congrats on getting the supplies you still needed for the quilt class and getting the required things done ahead of time
Meg, Happy birthday to those who are celebrating. I hope you've found some really good audio books to listen to while knitting. They changed my online library site so I have to get used to it. IN our family, in spite of two kids, the two kids in law the grands and their "sweeties" and the great grands there are no birthdays in Dec but several on the last of October and n Nov. Nov is an especially birthday filled month
Ginny, you're right that I have plenty of time to crochet now. I'm so thankful that we got there and back safely.Everyday the local tv station posts on yet another highway death here it seems. Makes me even more reluctant to go anywhere. But inless the weather is sure to be good for a couple days we probably won't be going anywhere till spring. There is one place dh would like to go but again, depends on weather although here, like many places, the weather can change drastically and give you surprises in the snap of a finger.
Now Ginny, you said in one of your posts that you are talkative Well I'm even more so...look at how much I blab.
Did work on the afgan today
See you all tomorrow

Hello Crafters Ruth - I'm glad you had a safe trip and enjoyed your time away. Thanks for the tip on the ginger. Phyl - I hope you won't get sick, I'm sure you'll take all the precautions you can. Ginny - Thanks for the recipe, sounds good. The Solstice quilt is that one where I did it in golds, browns, rusts, creams - using one of the Little House on the Prairie lines of fabric. I had enough of one of the print fabrics for a large outer border, I had just needed a solid color for an inner border and I found that a few weeks ago. I just need to get myself moving and get it done Meg - Sounds like you've been busy and getting a lot of things done. I'm sure you don't miss the very hot weather, just like I don't. It has been a shock for it to be so cool so quickly. I went out and did some shopping today. Where I went is south and east of where I live, and I noticed that not many of the leaves were changing there yet. I guess we have several more weeks before we might see peak color here. It's cooler here today, but still nice. We're supposed to get rain tomorrow and Saturday. The big Marine Corps Marathon is this Sunday in Washington, D.C., and they are saying that the rain should be over before that. But the children are supposed to run on Saturday. I don't know if they'll cancel that with the rain, or if there is some way to get them to run inside. Take care everyone!

Good afternoon!
Phyl- do what you have to do to keep yourself safe. I totally agree that if the mask is necessary, then wear it. 2 hours in the car with someone spreading their sickness is not where you should be.
Meg, glad you got that flu shot! I could never make sense of those who always choose to ignore the shot. Its nice that you are able to vote early- we did ours also and its very liberating knowing that we do not have to go out on election day.
CJ- hope that the rain holds off for the Marine Corps Marathon- is that something that you watch? Glad you got shopping done before the storm comes in, now......drum roll.....you can stay home and work on that solstice quilt!! I know, its so tough to inspire yourself, think we all have that problem too. But I bet its going to look so pretty when you are done!
Ruth, did you get any crochetting done today? I would think now your project is that striking afghan for DGS....its a great time of year for a project like that as it will keep you warm while you work on it. Hope that getting used to the library’s online system is not too tough. Don’t you hate it when they change something like that and it takes a long time to retrain yourself?
Babysat today. DGD is so cute and a lot of fun. Last night I got everything cut out for the table runner that I need to have done before class. Hoping that tomorrow I can sew the strips together for my homework and then I will be ready for the class to begin.
Like CJ we are in for a rainy weekend.
Take care all Ginny

CJ, did you shop for fun stuff or was it grocery shopping. Did you buy some yummy, low point treat for yourself?
Ginny, yes I bet that baby is just so cute and fun! I miss having babies around. Youngest of our family here is 16 months old and a real cutie but I don't see her often.
I haven't done any crafting yet today because I was giving the kitchen a thorough cleaning although it's far from done. I'm taking a break though and might do the rest another day. I also want to clean the oven before winter gets here and we have to keep the doors closed. We don't have an exhaust fan in the kitchen and even the no scent oven cleaner has bad fumes.I also have to declutter under the sink because things get put in there and forgotten. I still might do that today. It would be nice to clear a bunch of that stuff out. Oh and I also want to make myself one of those hanging bags that hold plastic bags. I don't really like them but it's better than having one of my cupboards filled with empty plastic bags. The garage is off the kitchen so I'll have it there just outside the door so I can just open the door to grab one. I'll use that yarn that turned out to not be 100% cotton.I'm going to get dh to put more hooks in the garage or I'll do it myself so that I can hang rarely used things up out of the way.

Good evening, Ruth, I have one of those hanging bag things, its one of the few things my mother in law ever made for me, and I do like it. I agree those darned plastic bags are a pain and I find that at times I have so many that I recycle them back at the store. They are useful for packing for packages, or to help me with the cat litter pans. But enough is enough... yes putting up more hooks would be helpful, especially as winter approaches. Getting more organized is so helpful, sure makes things easier to find and take care of.
Yes, DGD is so cute. She is at a really sweet age.

Thank you, Ruth for telling me about this thread! Hi Meg! It's really great to see you again. Phyl, I hope you have a good trip today. Hello to those of you who I haven't met yet!
I used to post on the old boards and found my way here about a year ago after an absence of several year. My computer had a final meltdown, we moved to a senior living community and then moved back home after six months,
My hb has numerous health issues which include enough dementia to make his choices questionable. A male caregiver comes about ten hours a week. hb insists it's not necessary and a waste of money, but J has made a huge difference to me! I get to leave the house with some peace of mind!
Home is Montana and has been for 24 years. Deer go past the house every evening. A herd of elk come down from the hills during snowstorms. I have seen moose in the front yard, and a bear walked across the front porch. This move was a major change from former city life in Los Angeles.
A few years ago, I taught myself to crochet. I make scarves, hats, and have almost finished a throw. I use the texture and colors of the yarn to provide interest, rather than stitch patterns. I consider myself to be a lazy advanced beginner with no interest in gaining more proficiency!
The moon has been spectacular this week. Most of the leaves drifted off the aspens yesterday, marking the end of spectacular fall color. Now to do some raking! Snow cannot be far behind!
Sue

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today snowsaint - Welcome to the thread, looks like you already know some of the posters. I think Montana looks so beautiful, it must be wonderful to live there. I'm glad to hear you have some help with your hb. I was a caregiver for my father, so I know how tough it can be. I look forward to hearing about your projects. Ruth - all the treats I bought for myself are high calorie/point - I've been off track for several weeks I have a few more things I want to bake - bread pudding and applesauce raisin bars and then I hope to get the baking out of my system until Thanksgiving Ginny - I'm glad you get to enjoy time with your grandkids, I'm sure they are a joy to you. Phyl - Hope everything goes O.K. today and your friend is feeling better so you don't have worry. Meg - Hope you are enjoying some crafting and good book. It's very cold and gray here today, with rain predicted for later and tomorrow. I think it's the Noreaster that's coming up the coast. I was outside earlier looking at my mailbox again. I've done a quick fix with it, but still trying to decide what I want to do for something more permanent. I saw a new quilt tutorial from MSQC this morning and thought you might enjoy watching it: www.missouriquiltco.com/land/tutorials/twist-and-shout-quilt/index.html?utm_campaign=newsletter_10262018_qt_t252&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=msqc&utm_content=photo1&utm_term=qt_t252&M_BT=44907198152When I first looked at this quilt, I thought it looked like too much work, but when you see the technique it is really quite easy and very creative. I would never have thought to snowball a strip set. Take care everyone!

Sue It's great to see you here. I joined here after Meg told me about the thread and I was so happy to meet CJ and Ginny. They are wonderful people too. They both crochet and also quilt. I don't know how to quilt but would love to learn and am thinking of trying some quilts probably by watching the video's that CJ mentioned and the "Ruth" technique. We've never had moose or elk here but have plenty of mule and white tail deer and antelope and had a mountain lion on our deck one night. Yes here the Aspen's have lost all their leaves. I moved here from western NY so it wasn't like moving from LA but it still was a great and wonderful change.
CJ, I LOVE bread pudding so I'll be right over...I wish. I should make myself some. On tv they're always talking about the necessity of having a crispy crust on your bread pudding. I like it all mushy. Dh doesn't like it at all but he'd like those raisin bars you mentioned. I'm going to go watch that video in a minute. I've been looking at some patterns that I received in email today...yes, just what I need as I've said before...more patterns. Then I decide I need the yarn that they've used in that particular pattern. Well, as you know, I have a ton of yarn and need to just adapt my yarn use to use in those patterns not use what they suggest.
Ginny, Meg, PHyl, I hope you are all having a good day and will be able to get in some crafting or whatever else you want to do in your leisure time.

My first love was quilting, but sitting at the sewing machine gives my back conniption fits. Crochet is okay because I can keep my arms at my sides. I suppose it makes perfect sense that I go to a weekly quilting group, and half of us are either knitting or crocheting!
Several more trees lost their leaves half an hour ago when a few gust of wind came through. There's new snow on the peaks of Yellowstone National Park to the south!
