Morning,
We have some beautiful weather here. I am getting ready to walk up to the Farmer’s Market to get some strawberries.
I am going to have bunion surgery this summer. I was born with a bunion on my left foot that has pushed my big toe behind the rest in recent years. I hear it is a painful recovery, but gotta do what I gotta do.
Jo Anne, I found a few patterns to use for the Christmas Art sales. That will be a good thing to work on during recovery.

Back from DC week with DS Park Ranger and DDIL and DGS14—did lots and lots of walking as usual—biggest day was ten miles but none under 8. Went pretty well—they do not care for history museums—science and industry—but they did like the boat ride down to Mt Vernon and the tour of the house—we ate lunch there in the visitor’s center which is lovely—really good food—I had shrimp and grits. We did the museum while they w2alked around—-got back at 3 pm and then subway’d out to Arlington—saw the changing of the guard—took part of shuttle tour—came back and ate at a really good dumpling place in Pentagon City—I ordered scallion pancakes because of you, Sue—they were delicious and I ate two quarters even tho I am supposed to stay away from flour. I had shrimp fried rice which was wonderful—really large shrimp.
Next day we took the first capital tour and the botanical gardens. I loved the gardens—but they are interesting—they whip through things commenting on what they already =know and have no interest in listening to the guides going around and explaining. DH and I were in there longer than they and DGS was with me—he was paying attention and interested—then they call him and announce they are leaving for the Nat. Hist. Museum. Immediately he lost interest and took off for the door—so we followed—DH even commented to me how frustrating it is that they spend so little time. So they went to Nat. History Museum—I had warned them that every kid in DC would be there—there were about six school busses out front and tons of tour busses—since we have been to many Nat Hist Museums (inc. this one as a teen) we passed==I was surprised cause DH wanted to go with me to stand in line at the African Am Museum and see if we could get a walk in ticket at 1. Wow, we were in line at 11:40 and wondered if we could stand that long when a man came up and said I have six tickets for the first six of you cause one of my families couldn’t make it—we were 3rd and 4th in line! In we went and it was only 12:10! That museum is amazing—we both decided we would have to go back—only thoroughly did 2 1/2 of the 7 floors—but it is truly great. Every American kid should be escorted through on an actual tour—it is so very well organized and so easy to follow. There were many, many people there but very do-able.
We met up with them in the late afternoon—they had given up on Nat HIst—cause of crowds—and had done Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Mem and then went to the American Hist Museum—that night we took a Lyft and went back to Lincoln Mem and Korean Memorial at night.
Thursday we did the National Zoo which I dearly loved—saw the pandas of course but I just love the layout and organization of the zoo—best ever—San Diego is bigger but it’s almost overwhelming—this was so user friendly—
Friday was the Archives, the sculpture garden walk through and then Air and Space Museum which was a literal zoo of people—I gave up and hit the next door Hirshhorn art museum and then walked some gardens—then went back and saw the wright brothers plane and a bike they had made—bought some stars my DD in CA had requested and met DH outside—turned out DSPR had left and gone back to house—so we called him and said to meet us at Lib of Congress—suddenly it was pouring rain—so glad I had brought the umbrellas—total downpour—lots of people escaping rain in the library but I think they still enjoyed seeing it. DH and I spent quite a bit of time in the special exhibits.
Took them to a nice restaurant for an actual sit down dinner that night. Next morning we got to the airport at 9:30 to check in and I get a text saying our flight is canceled! OMG, the SW ladies (two worked on it) were so awesome—they got us on the last five seats of a flight through Dallas—but it was 2 1/2 hours later than ours—so we checked bags and took off on the Metro—went back and walked from the stop to the Jefferson Memorial—was sunny and breezy but was so good to get a good walk in before the flight—we Lyfted back to airport in time for lunch and flight!
So was a good trip. Gave both of us some insight into the dynamics in youngest son’s family—interesting. Always saw him as ultra controlling but saw that side of DDIL and perhaps understand some of his behaviors better. He is a restless soul—cannot sit for long, needs to keep moving—went ahead by himself a lot. She is very closed to suggestions, disputing even directions we should walk—a couple times we gave up and just followed until she would realize we had been right to suggest the other way—anyway, it was interesting. She almost seemed a little disappointed that DGS’s favorite thing when asked was the Lincoln Memorial—she disputed that as well, encouraging him to change that to the reptile house at the zoo—he did not. Maybe because she’d told me he wouldn’t care about history?? No idea. Just interesting.

Holly, bunion surgery sucks—of course, I also had a bad surgeon. But the time in the boot after was so long for me! I never did the other foot but may have to as my second toe is becoming a bit of a hammer toe—I stretch it and manipulate it to slow it down but I think eventually it will require surgery. Really shop for your dr if possible—
Sue I’m sorry getting home was such a nightmare—that really is hard when you are tired and ready to be there without a hassle.
JoAnne, is your DH still trying out the gym?
DS talked to me a bit about DH_—he asked what’s wrong—he, like DS in SLC notices the difference in his walking gait and his posture—we sat far enough away to chat a bit yesterday—told him how necessary stretching is for people our age to keep the calves and ham strings from shortening up and changing you walk—I think he was shocked by seeing his dad for six straight days and noticing there are some physical changes that he was not aware of when DH can “get by” for a couple days keeping up with him.

Hi!
Weather has been nice, though very windy, due to the tornadoes that passed through the country.
Joan, how is your DH's back? My SO is the same way with taking care of himself, he hates taking medication and overdoes things. Yum scallion pancakes, I haven't had them in a while! Interesting that you got a better sense of your DS's family dynamics. One of my ex-coworkers worked on the African Am Museum after he left our firm.
Jojo, glad you had a good time visiting your sister. My sister has been doing a ton of yardwork too, as she does every spring.
Holly, ugh bunion surgery, but you'll feel so much better when it's all healed.
My cousin's wedding was very nice, food was good, and great to see my NJ relatives, though one cousin from Taiwan came. My mom is the oldest of 5, and my cousin who got married is 26, she is the youngest of my youngest aunt who is only 6 years older than me.
Last week we had someone coming in to open up a small part of our bathroom ceiling in a problematic part of the area throughout our condo building. It is a walk in shower with a trench drain, and was not designed properly. We had problems with it the week we moved in, got it fixed, but new owners a couple of years ago had some renovations done. Long story short, we hope the problem is fixed.
I'm stressing out watching the Sixers game!
Oh, and Game of Thrones last night was amazing!

Sue, every time DH watches a new G of Thrones I have to hear about it the next morning at breakfast—I don’t watch and have no real interest in it so I sort of fake listen and nod==today a good friend of mine at the gym had on a G of T tank top—I suggest that she come over for breakfast so they could chat about the show together—LOL. Her husband is not a fan either. My garden gnome from clay class two weeks ago was on the island as I had been underglaze painting him and DH said he looked like the guy in G of T—the midget guy—then at the dentist office when I showed Jordan a pic of my project he immediately held up a picture from the internet of that very guy as well! So funny. And my gnome is very short legged—in fact to me he looks like his feet are practically attached to his knees!
DH and I have been so so tired—don’t have a clue why.
I finished the book Educated—really liked it. Now I am reading Prairie Fires—the autobio of L. England Wilder—it’s really a good book. Next after that will be Becoming by M. Obama. All my friends are raving about it. Holly you finished it, didn’t you?
Holly, when is your class over—the one you are taking for credit. Do you get free classes as an employee?
JoAnne, how is DGD doing—when do you go to CA?
I am taking a glazing workshop on Sat and Sunday this weekend—Really need it so I can begin to use some neat glazes. Get my haircut tomorrow—yay! DH is taking Jordan to the eye dr tomorrow for new glasses as his hinge on the frame broke so he had to super glue the bow on. I have my 3 hr gym day and really need it.
I had a mole removed from my smile line crease==it’s been there forever and I have always hated it—it is healing so quickly. Can’t use any makeup near there for a few more days but I’m anxious to see how it will look without it. Most people don’t notice it but I always do.

Yes, Becoming was really good. She is so down to earth.
I finish up on Monday. I’m taking a 5 week course each summer session and am teaching the summer section of our library course. Yes, I’m nuts, but couldn’t pass up the course topics or the money. Yes, I get free tuition.
The shooting at UNC Charlotte hits way too close to home.

I thought of you when I read about the shooting, Holly! There is no “safe” place in America any more—so scarey with crazy people armed!
Going to clay class tonight as this weekend is our glaze workshop—sort of hate to go and start another new project—finally finished painting my gnome last night—and glazed my tree tea lite that I made on my own—I am so ready to just make some of my own things—next week I hope to start a few things I’d like to try.
My removed mole on my face is nearly healed—I love that I don’t feel that bump anymore.
DD has a date tonight—second one with this guy her age who is a drummer—not a big drinker—first wife died two years ago—has not dated since—seems to be in to his sister’s family and parents—has no kids. Hoping she takes it slowly this time!
SOBSIL , her X, is a mess—he is drinking heavily in spite of being told it will kill him, lost his job, was denied getting on the state gaming commission (the internet minutes of the meeting say for character flaws ) now is working on contract for the Indians in Sacramento for their casinos there—they want =him to move. His young girl friend broke up with him (smart girl, she didn’t spend 18 years to figure out him!)—DGS15 said he is working through the acceptance that his dad will probably die early with his counselor—what a mess. Hoping he doesn’t keep making passes at DD—altho she would never get involved with him again, it’s just irritating—he is such scum!
We are going to DGS18’s graduation—maybe that will be a breakthrough beginning. He doesn’t want to participate in graduation but DD told him he needed to for everyone in the family and for her. He refused to RSVP for the honors recognition evening so is not allowed to go—he has straight A’s and would receive his awards there—it’s like a rejection of something I guess. Oh well—DD was disappointed as the parents were invited but only if the kids RSVP’d—
Holly, I think you are getting hooked on a harder pace!! LOL.
Hope JoAnne is okay—could she be in CA already? I just cannot remember when she said they were going—thought it was after school though.
Gotta’ go—=hope everyone has a good weekend coming up!

Hi everyone! Sorry I have been away so long - so much has happened! I will summarize all as it has been a mess - like a soap opera: DGD13- 2 hospital admissions for suicide threats. Was with me for the 3 days she was home- acted completely normal. Went with my DDIL to see her psychologist that she has seen ever since age 8 when came to live with them. Told the doc she still had thoughts of self harm - so back to hospital. Meantime her grandmother is displaced and staying with us until she has a new home. Also last Thursday a week ago, DH collapsed and was unconscious for about 2 min. He did not remember any of it. I called 911. He was hospitalized til Saturday (3 days). While there had cardiac enzymes (normal), nuclear stress test and echo (results unchanged from previous). Appt. at cardio scheduled the next Monday to get heart monitor to wear for 30 days. But before that happened, he had another episode Sunday night passing out- this time flat on his face 2 AM - broken nose, stitches in forehead and above lip, steri strips over nose- when we left ER this time went straight to cardio office to get the monitor. This Friday went to ENT about nose and to get stitches removed. ENT said he could do surgery to repair nose but did not have to. DH said “no surgery”. Monday he gets a new bipap machine for nighttime to replace the crap which has not worked since the end of February. Cardio appt on the 24th to f/u .
What a whirlwind of events!
Joan - your trip sounded great! You did so much sightseeing!
Sue- glad you got to reunite with some family at the wedding. Good you have repair issues in your place resolved!
Holly - oh no bunion surgery! I have had it. No fun at all. I need the other done but not considering it anytime soon. I dread it. The knitting projects will be good for that time.

Oh my, JoAnne—I’m so sorry to hear that your days have been so full of stress! OMG,Your DH was doing so well and now this! Did they check to see if possibly had a stroke or two? So he hasn’t used his CPAP since February? How awful for him to just fall! I hope you get some answers soon. And I feel so bad about your DGD13–children with depression is so hard—I hope she can respond to help soon!

Thank you Joan.
DDIL’s mom moved out today- so we are getting back to normal.
DH has the new machine to start using tonight. It is so much better than the old one he had and does so much more. We will be able to sleep tonight with the bed flat instead of elevated. So much better for me.
His wt. is 214. His goal 200. Was 250. He is only 5’10’ so this seems reasonable- the goal they gave him after his heart surgery. Of course he needs to find out the heart monitor result before any exercise routine.
My plan is to get back to exercise for myself!

Yes Joan , he has been quite a long time without a machine- probably a contributing factor to the current issues. They do not believe he had a stroke or any heart damage but some type of arrthymia. Hopefully the monitor will help determine that.

I was tested by a cardiologist once about five years ago to see if my sleep apnea had caused any heart conditions—he said I was lucky that I started when I did since I don’t have any. I guess there can actually be damage that can be a problem later. I wonder if that is part of it? So frightening—I cannot imagine how worried you have been and probably still are. Glad you got a new machine—and yes , they are tons better than several years ago! I am never without mine—had a relative who didn’t use hers and she had a massive stroke in her sleep—the drs. Said it was all related because she had apnea so bad—they had even put her on a BiPAP which I guess puts oxygen into you at night—and she just would not use it—so frustrating. I guess your being a nurse you have seen it all as well.
Anyway, I hope that things continue to go better. 200 is pretty high for 5 ‘10”—my DH is 6’ 1” about now and weighs about 197 and needs to lose about 20 pounds to be really good. He carries that in his belly.—has skinny legs!

Hi!
Jojo, I can't believe all that you've had to deal with between DGD and your DH. Your DH was even starting to exercise and now this. I hope they are able to figure out what is causing him to pass out, very scary! I would be freaking out, it is good that you have a lot of medical and hospital knowledge.
Yes, I get that the site is not secure, it's always been there.
Joan, your DD broke up with that guy from Florida? Wow, SOBSIL has really gone down hill. Sorry for the kids to see their father like this.
Holly, will you go away for a vacation this summer at all?
Saturday my mom called and said they had no electricity in the house, turns out the cables and wires coming from the house had degraded with time and fell down. I had to quickly find an electrician, I'm not from that area and didn't know of one, so I could only just google online. My sister lives close to them, but she was picking up my nephew from college in Michigan. Luckily, I found someone who did a good job and everything was fixed by 8pm. We were worried because Sunday was going to rain all day. Yesterday, I spent the day with my mom, helping her with errands while the caregiver who comes once a week was with my dad.
I'm having a calmer day today! Someone who used to work in our office in the marketing department is coming by to visit with us and see SO's art today at lunch time. It will be nice to see her, it's been maybe 4-5 years!
