Lmenglish - Have you tried a kong? Charlie had extreme separation anxiety when we first got him and that really helped. I'm in.

zazzles, hope you're healing from your falls. Putting a box in your way is a good idea. Will new ramps be included in the new construction? No new ramps. The existing ramps, I’m sure, were not code compliant and there isn’t really a way to make them so inside the house. But I am having half-steps installed at both locations. Although the step-downs in both places are standard stair-tread height, they are awkward enought to use that it has always been uncomfortable. I met a neighbor on the street behind me who had a half-step which I got to try out and it made all the difference in the world. My problem right now, it seems, is that the ramps have become a way of life and I don’t even think about them (or, now, the lack of them). It is more a mental adjustment than anything. This is going on the door when I get dressed and go downstairs…

zazzles , I wonder how many Fit Points you can claim for falling down and getting back up again?

fullmahina,- I LOVE that sign! zazzles- I hope your feeling better. Rick calls those gravity checks. I just occasionally will fall down (or drop something) to make sure gravity is still working and things don't float up. When I fall it's called a "full body gravity check". We seem to have a "gravity vortex" in the bathroom. You know, you open the medicine closet and everything falls out into the sink. Yep, works well at my house! Be safe everyone

zazzles the half step is an excellent idea. We have a step down living room between the entry and the dining room as well as a step down master bathub/shower. A friend told me that when her mother gets up from a seated position she takes a moment to straighten her shirt but it is really to think of her surroundings and how she will take her first steps. I have been trying to do that as well instead of just rushing everywhere.

fullmahina, LOL…falling down—0 Fitpoints; getting up—4 Fitpoints the first time and 10 Fitpoints the 2nd time because that was so much more difficult. hpeterson1951, it only hurts when I laugh. You made me hurt! jamescat1, my shower had a built-in seat. I asked them to raise it from 18 inches high to 24 inches high. I know from experience with my father than it is easier to drop onto the fee from a higher position than to try to raise yourself up when your posterior is below your knees. When I got home from lunch the foreman wanted to discuss placement of the shower wand. While looking over the situation he said, “Let me clear out the stuff from the floor of the shower area and then you can step in and sit and see what feels right.” “No thanks," said I, “I’m not getting into any space that has a hole in the floor!” LOL

zazzles one of the most useful things I have learned in my exercise classes is getting up from a seated position without using my hands. It takes practice but also depends on not having a lot of aches and pains. Harder for me is getting up from the floor with two knee replacements but I also work on that. It is the little exercises that count most at this age.

jamescat1, after the first fall I got up on my knees (painfully), then got myself up. After the 2nd fall there was no way; so I sat on my but, inched over to the doorway, got the door opened, and raised my rump onto the top of the floor from which I had fallen. After the first fall my Apple Watch asked me if I had fallen and, then if I needed assistance summoned. After the 2nd fall it didn’t make a peep: maybe it figured if I was stupid enough to fall a 2nd time there was nothing that could help me. LOL.

zazzles , now you know what they call it a "Smart Phone"!! Linda, it is actually the Apple Watch 4.0 and not the iPhone that has this functionality. When they announced that feature I rushed right out to upgrade; and not surprisingly, there were other seniors there getting equipped with these watches. If I had fallen and been unconscious or unable to respond, the watch would have summoned help after a brief waiting period. Reassuring when you live alone.

zazzles , you might want to check out this video. Thanks. That was very interesting. I think I used two of those techniques last night after the two falls. Nice to have even more options.
