Whether you are regular poster or a lurker, we encourage you to talk with us. We do talk about books, but also about our lives, and Weight Watchers. We are women who are spread around the country, and eventually you will learn you we are, and what books we like to read. Don't be intimidated, just pop in and tell us who you are, and what you are reading now. We will make you feel right at home.
This is a thread we had on the WW 50 Year old board, so even though most of us have moved beyond our 50's, I am keeping it here. Some prefer to post on Facebook, but for those who may also like to post on something that resembles our old format, I decided to start this. Although we were brought together by our love of books, and we love to share our ideas about books and authors, our friendship has grown, and we know a lot about each others lives. We are spread across the country, and that adds a bit of interest as well, learning about other people's way of life through the "book" they write on the thread.

Good Saturday morning. Whew, did it storm and rain at 12:30 in the morning! Wish we had our rain gauge, from the old house, as it sounded like a ton of rain coming down!! Supposed to clear up today with a high of 82. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets humid too, as it has not dried out yet.
If you noticed the dates on the header, we will just use this thread for Memorial day also, if you all don't mind....I am sure it will be pretty quiet on here all this holiday weekend.
Pinky, I can't imagine still being at the old house! I am sure I would not have had the knee surgeries, because just living there was making me put it off, with all we had to do there. So all the chores would have fallen to me, with DH having all these issues. As it is right now, he spends a good part of the day sleeping in his chair. That is after sleeping till 9 am. Poor guy! This weather all over is getting scary. I am not religious, but sometimes with how it is going, you really have to wonder! Speaking of mowing....a week ago Monday, the lawn service was here, in the early evening, cutting the grass for the whole apartment complex (there are a total of 5 buildings here, with 8 big apartments in each building, so you know there is quite a bit of grass to cut). On our side of the building, which faces the farm field, so it is kind of out of sight, they did not mow. They have not been back, and that whole area looks like HELL! Like a field. I am so ticked, as our front/back door to our apartment is right there, and if we have company, they see that. Oh well, their problem, huh?
Robin, thanks. Isn't that nice that your DH wanted fish? We don't eat much fish here at home. We had been making a baked haddock dish a lot, a few years ago, then one time it came out really stinky, so that scared us off of making it again. We like going out to eat and ordering it steamed or baked. I too guard my purse like a hawk, at the stores. Sometimes I leave it locked up in the trunk, and just put my debit card in my pocket. Now I have one of the purses you wear on your side, can't remember the name of them, but I like those a lot. When are you going to Alaska?
Carol, thank you! Oh I hate when I can't sleep good! Glad it wasn't a UTI! We were up late last night, because of the very loud storm, so I might not be the best today, but that is ok, since I don't work, big deal, right? Our dishwasher has that problem Robin was talking about, about how things are not dry, kind of stupid that we have to dry off things that are still wet, the next morning. But of course we had no choice as to the brand, so we just live with it. Good luck getting a new one.
Gareth, I think we got your pouring rain, during the night. While it was going on, I went on Facebook, and sure enough there were people on posting their power went out. Ours flashed off but went back on, and those people posting live over in this area, so we were lucky that it came back on right away. An Alaska cruise is one of the things we want to do, sooner than later, before our bodies or minds go to pot.
Busy day yesterday. While I was gone to therapy, DH saw a hummingbird buzzing by our patio door, looking in at him. So after I iced my leg, I went over to a local bird store, and bought a nice setup (a base, and pole, with pole extensions) and a hummingbird feeder, to put on the balcony. The sales lady reminded me to have a flowering plant hanging on one of the extension, which will attract the birds. After we had it put together, with the plant out there, we were mixing up the nectar, and sure enough, there was a hummingbird looking for the feeder. We got it out there ASAP, and since then it has been very busy, right now there are 2 birds on it. We want to go back to the bird store and get a couple more pole extensions for different bird feeders. I can not tell you all how happy we both are to be able to have figured out how to feed the birds here, we missed doing that so much! I need to figure out how to post pictures on here, then I will take a picture of the feeder set up.
Time for more coffee.....have a super Saturday!

Karen, find with the whole weekend thread, we will just keep reading. Sometimes there are a lot of posts, sometimes not so much. Sorry the storm kept you up. You will have to call your management office about the grass cutting. Maybe they will come back and do that portion.
We are leaving for Vancouver on the 13th, then will get on the cruise on the 16th for a week. We will come home on the 23rd, which is our 45th anniversary. Can't remember if I said this yesterday, sorry if I did. I have family spread out all over Canada. One of my DM's cousins lives in Toronto, and I message with her on Facebook, or email with her sometimes. She just sent me something about a Frank Lloyd Wright house. I emailed her and asked her if she had any thoughts for us on Vancouver. She told me that her brother lives there now. I haven't seen him in over 50 years, they lived near my grandparents in Winnipeg. She was going to call him and tell him I was coming. I don't want him to feel like he has to see me or entertain me, and not even sure my DH would want to. We'll see. Maybe we will meet him for breakfast.
I have baking to do today, have to go out first because I thought I had butter, but don't. I'll get laundry done today, and start to organize and think about what we need to bring for our trip. I am going to try to accomplish things rather than sitting and reading all day. Not much left to read in There, There, for book club. And we are not meeting until the 4th or 5th, I have to check my calendar.
Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend. Marsha made it to Detroit, although there was an initial flight delay, she said she had a good travel day.

It feels so good just to sit finally for awhile. After work we went to HyVee. After that we walked. I was surprised I was so exhausted by time I got back home. It's in the 70's and humid so think I may have been a little dehydrated since I hadn't drank anything all morning. Water tasted so good so I drank quite a bit. After having breakfast and sitting now I feel better. A tornado touched down last night around Ia City. I heard we had over 2"of rain yesterday. Chances of more rain today and tomorrow with the biggest chance on Mon.
Karen, sounds like a good idea combining Mon with the weekend thread. After all it's a long weekend! Sounds like you got the storm we had the night before. I'd certainly let management know about the grass. How else will they know about the lawn service. I've found out with our dishwasher when it shuts off to go into the dry cycle if I make sure there's no extra water on anything everything dries better. I even partially dry off with a dish towel extra water on anything especially plastic.
Robin, our anniversary is in June too. Ours the 12th. 48 years for us. How's your DH feeling?

DH is feeling better, but he says it hurts on and off and does not want to go tomorrow, which is fine with me because he would just be bugging me to leave earlier than I would want to. I will drive through the city to pick up DS & DDIL, let DS drive to NJ, I think it's only about 1/2 hour, then do the reverse on the way home. DH will figure the day out for himself. I baked the lemon bundt cake, it looks beautiful, I will do the glaze tomorrow morning. I need to stop at the dollar store to get one of the plastic cake holders.
Gareth, I have been reading about all the bad weather, again, down the middle of the country. I know sometimes we forget to drink as much water as we should. I had bought shrimp yesterday, cooked them while the cake was baking, ate them, but didn't have anything to drink with it, so will do that now before I forget.
This morning the dog got thrown off by someone riding a bike who had stopped to adjust her helmet, and talked to me, so he barked at her, then also when a neighbor came out to get things from their car, so I had to walk him again a little while ago, so did my longer walk, and will do another longer walk later. I have been using something on my knees that DH bought, DMSO cream. He says it works, when I looked it up online they say that it has the same effect as a placebo, however, I think I am feeling better. My knees still hurt, but I don't get the terrible pains at the end of the day like I was.

Good Sunday morning. Yesterday was a great day, temp wise, but that wind! At least that is gone today, along with the temp of 83. Only 70 today, but that is nice too.
Robin, I am going to go on the apartment complex portal and put in a maintenance request. What with it being a holiday weekend, the office won't be open on Monday, so they should see it Tuesday. Thanks for confirming that I should speak up. Sometimes DH thinks I do/say things I shouldn't. Wow, the 13th will be here so fast!! We will miss you while you are gone. I will want to hear all about Alaska! What are you baking for? A special occasion? Good to hear your DH is doing better! We sure do need our better halves to be back to normal! I also have to remind myself to drink more water. Back a few years ago, when I was walking so much, I was living on water, now it is more coffee than water.
Gareth, that is interesting how you think your exhaustion was because of not drinking water.....as I said to Robin, I really have to concentrate on getting more water, that, I think is part of my problem! I had heard about the tornado in IA. City. Awful....this violent weather is just not quitting! Here in WI we are complaining of the cooler, rainy weather, but I guess we should be glad we have not had all those tornadoes! The only think I don't like about the dishwasher not drying the dishes is, I will grab something out of there, and it will drip all over other dishes, that may be dry. You don't work today, do you?
Went back to the bird store yesterday, after DH told me what more I should buy. Of course he did not go with me, as he just did not feel up to it. I took 2 pictures of my my balcony now that hopefully I am done with it. I am going to try to post them on here. Fingers crossed it works!

Karen, no I don't work Sundays. I have tomorrow off too for the holiday since we close for holidays. Hope you can post the pictures. I see a lot of people do post pictures. I just have never taken the time to figure it out. I'm sure it's simple enough if you know how.
Yesterday was so nice. Sounds like a repeat today and then rain tomorrow. We'll walk midmorning. I'd rather walk first thing before breakfast but I'll wait and walk with DH. I hate walking after I drink anything much especially coffee that acts like a diuretic with me. There's been times I didn't think I'd make it back home having to go so bad.
Finished Sunburn which I liked. I didn't have the ending figured out. Now on to The Lies We Told.

Karen, I am going to my future DDIL's parents house for a BBQ today. She is expecting about 30 people. Their family always does big BBQ's and other get togethers. DH will stay home, which is fine with me. DS & DDIL want me to pick them up, which really isn't particularly out of the way, just taking a route through the city to get there, which is fine on a day like today. So if DH went, he would never want to stay as long as I would. I'll leave about 1:00.
Today is going to be a hot day, high 80's. It's sunny and about 70 now, so I would prefer it stay this way.
Karen, definitely speak up, but of course that's the NY way. Whenever I travel I say you can always tell I am a NY'er because I always speak up. If I am next in line, I will tell people who are oblivious. If I don't like where they seat me in a restaurant, I will tell them.
I stopped at TJ Maxx yesterday, bought a pair of very light weight Sketchers that I will take on the trip. I think I might wear them today. Also a nice pair of navy dress slacks for dinner on the cruise, and a light weight sweater. There is an outlet that has Thomas' English Muffins, and I got a real bargain. An 18 pack of the 100 calorie light English Muffins for $2.59. The regular price is $4.49 for 6. I will keep out 6 and freeze the rest. I have them once in a while, and DH does too.
Hope everyone has a nice day, and happy reading.

Good Morning Friends! A beautiful day here today sunny and supposed to get close to 75 degrees today---perfect. Rain supposed to show up again in the night and tomorrow morning. I did mow some yesterday but it is such a mess out on our long driveway. It is so wet that down in the lower ground there is water or too wet to be in there. I almost got stuck with the mower---DH would have been so proud of me. I did what I could on the high parts and now planning to mow in the yard this afternoon.
Karen--I would question the mowing by your apartment as well. Nice you have those hummingbirds to watch---fun that they showed up so soon for you. I'm good with tomorrows thread being a continuation as well. With it being a long weekend and Marsha and Anngie traveling not as much chatting as usual either without them to comment.
Gareth---I need to check into Sunburn, sounds interesting.
Robin---enjoy your time at the in-laws. I too was wondering where your were going with that yummy lemon cake---I was hoping it was my house as it sounds so good.
DGD is 9 years old today. Cannot believe it. They stopped by here on their way to a fun time in Sioux Falls to celebrate her with her favorite things. I told DDIL that another 9 years and she will be 18 and will have just graduated from high school---YIKES!!! They are going to the Kirby Science Center, a fun learning place for kids and then to Olive Garden, Isabel's favorite place to eat. Most likely a stop at Scheels (a sporting store that is huge and has a ferris wheel inside)that she loves to ride. If they get back early enough we may go have pizza together as well.
Heading out to mow---talk later!

Oh my goodness that was hard to figure out!! I had to buy a membership to Photobucket in order to post those 2 pictures. Oh well, the nice thing is (for me), I will be able to post more pictures to you guys....teehee...sorry in advance! Since I spent way too much time trying to figure it all out, I need to get off here. (Hope you all like the pics....we now call that plant/bird feeder pole our "tree"!!!)

Karen, I love it!! Will you have to take your "tree" in when it's windy or at least the hanging plant so it doesn't blow over or away?

Happy Memorial Day. Thank you to all of our Veterans!
53 degrees right now, not going to get warm today, and by afternoon sometime rain will be here, then going into overnight heavy rain. Rain off and on for the week.
Gareth, yay! I thought you did not work Sunday's, but wasn't sure. Glad you have two days off! I saw a woman, around our age the other day walking all around the apartment buildings. There are 5 buildings all together, so as I watched her, it dawned on me that maybe pretty soon I can get out there with my cane and do what she is! It would be safer than walking out on the road right now, and I could ease myself back into walking. Now that you remind me, I got my body used to walking for just so long, with my route being back at the house to go to the bathroom. With that kind of walking, you drink so much more water, so I have to be close to the bathroom by a certain time. Wonder if I could get management to put a port a potty out here somewhere? LOL! About the tree, the first day we had it up, (Friday) was really windy, and everything did good. The plant is heavy. On the bottom of the stand we have a weight on it, I think it is a 5 # weight. The hummingbirds did not come around hardly at all during that wind, they were probably hiding in a tree, as they would be blown away! I am glad you like it, you never know if it really looks nice or not.
Robin, I am sorry, you must have told us where you are going, and it just flew out of my mind. I hope you had fun, and I am sure your lemon cake was a big hit! When I was out driving around Saturday, I was close to the mall area and all the streets around there were dead, usually they are very busy, and all the stores I went to were nice and quiet, so is that why you were thinking driving thru the city would have been ok yesterday? Thank you for putting TJ Maxx in my head....I need shorts, tops and want to get some sun dresses, for the summer, maybe this coming weekend, and I think I could find some things to fit me there. Thank you, it is a nice place here, we are still getting used to living in an upper, and also living with a group of people!
Pinky, I feel so bad for you all! Our farmers here in Wi are battling the rain issues but not as bad as you! I think nobody has it as bad as the people in OK., my goodness, it is just crazy there. Happy Birthday to your DGD!!!! 9!!! Yes, soon she will be driving!! I told 2 of my grands a year or so ago that I would teach them how to drive, lol, their parents might disagree. Did you all go have pizza?
Lol, the lawn cutting guys were here yesterday mowing the lawn!! On a Sunday of a holiday weekend!!! Go figure!! I was planning on calling to complain tomorrow morning. It looks so nice now!
I did a lot of house cleaning yesterday, did all the vacuuming! That was the first time since both surgeries that I could do that. Before DH surgery I did the 2 bedrooms and he did the rest, since the living room is so big. Will steam clean the floors of the 2 bathrooms and the kitchen today. For dinner we are going to our dear friends house. We had invited them to come here, but she pleaded with us to come there instead. As they are in their 90's, I gave in. I had wanted to show them the apartment, now that I am just about done with the decorating.
Packer Nation is in mourning, with the passing of Bart Starr. He was a great man, a man with immense class, which you don't see much in football players. But we all kind of expected his passing, as he was not in good shape.
Have a nice holiday ladies!

Raining when I got up and pouring now. It's forecast to rain most of the day heavy at times. Still getting into the 70's today. It's 66ยบ now. Guess we were lucky that at least we had two really nice days of the holiday weekend. I saw on my memories in FB that a year ago we set a record high of 97ยบ 14 years ago today marked the passing of my DM after a week bed side vigil in the hospital. Hardest week of my life. My sister took nights and I days. Luckily we were both there though at the end each holding one of her hands as she took her last breath.
Karen, loved those pics! Hope you post more now that you know how! I've got to figure out how to do it. I didn't realize you had to go through photo bucket. Glad they mowed without you having to say anything! My DGS had that on FB yesterday about Bart Starr's passing. I also saw where the WI assistant basketball couch lost his wife and DD in a car accident this weekend. So sad.
No big plans for the day. Good day to just stay home with it raining. Needless to say it'll be indoor walking. One thing about indoor walking I don't have to worry about how much I drink beforehand! We want to gather things together today that we'll take to DDIL Saturday for her annual neighborhood garage sale the following weekend. We always donate things and tell her to give the DGC whatever money they make on our things. Good way for us to declutter a little too. Some of the things we take don't always make their way to the sale when one of them finds something they want to keep too.
