Any thoughts on Mayor Pete's "Action Plan to Combat the National Threat Posed by Hate and the Gun Lobby"?
Mitch McConnell has no shame. I would be more than shocked if he called the Senate back to vote on the legislation already sitting there being held. No way is he going to do that, and yet my money says that KY will send him back to the Senate to let him continue his tyranny.

I really am not up-to-date on gun laws but: there's a waiting period for hand guns, right? Like 5 days? For the background check and the cooling-off period. Why doesn't that apply to rifles and shotguns? As far as I know, you can walk into Academy or whatever store that carries them, buy it and walk out. You never hear of hand guns being used in these mass murders. So why aren't the same "no you can't buy it and walk out right now" laws across the board with ALL firearms?

Hi everyone - been away from the boards a bit. My younger brother and his family came in from Texas for a visit. There is nothing quite like being with both of my brothers lol. We had the best time! My niece brought her fiance for us to meet - a perfect match. Nephew #3 (the youngest of five nieces and nephews) is starting his senior year in high school. Where did all the time go? It really was a fantastic week. From BBQs to bonfires and board games to boats, a good time was had by all and we made some wonderful memories.
I didn't watch a minute of TV or news while they were all here but, I did see the headlines on my phone after we left the boat. I had some catching up to do. And what a sad and angry endeavor that was. I feel so knocked out of balance going from love and laughter to fear and loathing. I can't believe the state of affairs we find ourselves. And true to form, that son of a bitch is at the heart of everything ugly.
As far as Mayor Pete Joyce, I haven't read/heard that plan yet. But, given the fact that he is a war vet and is so bright, surely it would be worthwhile to at least consider. We should make some common sense changes while the NRA is in turmoil.

doordie50, Pam, so glad you had such a good family visit! It is a shock to come back to the reality after happy time like that. As for Mayor Pete's plan, I think it sounds very reasonable and well thought out. DotRen, good point about handguns vs long guns, or just firearms in general. Unfortunately, I'm not holding my breath waiting for anything to happen. BUT, if we can get the JA out of the WH and in a utopian world if we could get McConnell out of the Senate, get rid of the filibuster, and gain seats in the Senate then we have a strong chance of getting something done. Pretty much all the stars have to align exactly, but a girl can dream. Personally, I am not just sick of being told to send thoughts and prayers, but I'm sick of seeing blame being placed solely on mental health and violent video games. Absolutely I think we need better mental healthcare and easier access to it. Absolutely I'd like to see the extreme violence taken out of video games and movies, but let's face it. Every country in the world has those same issues, but we are the only ones insane enough to allow something like this to not only continue but to flourish. So while those things may be a contributor factor, the primary factor is the ready easy access to the guns in the first place. So the primary mental health issue here is the insanity of our country to continue down this path without even trying to do anything about it. Once again it's MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY . . .

Personally, I am not just sick of being told to send thoughts and prayers, but I'm sick of seeing blame being placed solely on mental health and violent video games. I am too. You know why? Because you know, I know, and the deceitful and deplorable people who are spreading this load of crap about mental health and video games being the "root of all evil" are they themselves the root of all evil! It's bull and they know it is. It's also damn insulting. Do you know anybody who would believe such bunk? Can you see people sitting around a table saying, "Hey, we can finally rid ourselves of all these mass killings. All we have to do is ban Pac Man and You Tube." Who knew? Do you think they believe we're that stupid to believe if we banned all video games and opened free mental health centers people would stop buying killing machines? We'd stop gunning each other down? Snow White would suddenly appear with her little dwarf friends singing happy tunes surrounded by blue birds and we'd never, ever again hear about an angry white boy going on a killing spree? I don't care what the greedy gun manufactures or the greedier NRA spews. Guns DO kill people. Guns in the hands of people kill people. We have a mental case sitting in the Oval Office who bragged about how he could stand on a corner in NYC and shoot people and people would still vote for him. He even shaped his hand and finger to look like a gun to prove his deranged point. That was a good thing for this nut job. A selling point. WTH? I'm also sick and tired of hearing about the damn Second Amendment. An amendment can be, what's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah, amended! I have to wear my seat belt every time I get in my car to save my life in case of an accident. And yet, I can be gunned down just walking in a shopping center. Not good enough!

I found this graphic shared by Robert Reich meaningful. Everyone of these countries have people with mental health issues and kids who play too many violent video games, so there's really only one thing that stands out about the US that is truly different. Guess what that is?

Hmm. I'll have to think about that, Joyce. What could it possibly be? Still thinking.
The thing that's most insulting is people spreading these ridiculous lies about mental health and video games believe we're a bunch of stupid fools who would truly believe such nonsense. I know there are dumb ass fools out there who choose to believe just about any thing but surely we outnumber them, right? Right?
Pam, it does sound like you had a wonderful time. I'm tired just reading about all the things you did. lol.

Trump was already on a tweet-rage about "why didn't people blame Obama for Sandy Hook?" Well, mr "I'm always the victim" - because Obama never advocated shooting people, laughed about it, said he could do it and still get elected.. the list goes on; Obama didn't engender racism; Obama didn't call immigrants "invaders".. Obama wasn't a racist, misogynistic idiot - that's why.

Any thoughts on Mayor Pete's "Action Plan to Combat the National Threat Posed by Hate and the Gun Lobby"? My thought is that the guy is fantastic, brilliant and reasonable. Not sure if you caught him on Morning Joe. www.msnbc.com/morning-joePammie- good to see you back and to know you had a perfect holiday. You should have kept the news off sweetie.

The republicans and Trump are liars. First thing they did when Trump got elected was to change the law and make social security mentally ill payees who are declared too sick to handle money can now get guns Obama had changed that. I am bipolar and only 3 % of mentally ill are violent And look at all the other countries. But when they bring that up they don't even mean that b because they determined opposite than they now talk.

Anne, I didn't see Mayor Pete on Morning Joe, but did catch him on Hardball. The more I hear him speak the more I like him. He really is smart and able to articulate well. He makes a lot of sense, if people will just listen.
Amy, you're right that bunch wouldn't know the truth if it walked up and slapped them in the face.
I am hoping that the JA is met with lots of jeers and protests today, but it won't make any difference to him. He'll just love the attention, and he'll then use it to further stoke up hatred in his base, as if their hatred hasn't already been stoked to a white hot level.

I'm having a hard(er) time sleeping since the latest shootings. I imagine the survivors are having a really hard time.
I just don't see any way forward. I saw some idiot who is a member of a gun owners group saying everyone knows universal background checks don't work because there have been mass shootings in states that have them. Well, I only know about my own state, Cali: the Gilroy shooter bought his guns in Nevada. Sounds like a reason for federal action to me... The gun advocate didn't want red flag laws either. I can't even remember his "reason" for that one.
