Yesterday Linda72 asked me about my new blog on WordPress. I'm so excited to have a place to write about my many interests, including dieting, cooking, baking, mental health issues, pets, and other topics. I just completed my third entry. The main topic is non-sugar and low sugar sweeteners and my experiences with them as an avid cook and baker. If you'd like to check it out, please visit my blog at www.birdflight.blogEven if you don't wish to visit my blog, I'm curious to learn about other people's experiences with non-sugar and low sugar sweeteners. Do you use them? If so, which ones and why? If you don't use them, what are your reasons? I know that many (though not all) Weight Watcher's recipes tend not to use non-sugar sweeteners. I know because when I was an online member I made plenty of them. They were very good, but sometimes I need to lower the sugars even more to keep my glucose levels in check. I don't have diabetes, but I was pre-diabetic a while back. In my case I appreciate non-sugar and low sugar sweeteners, because I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I always have.

I try to avoid refined sugar and artificial sweeteners. I use honey, maple syrup, etc when necessary.
My current plan discourages artificial sweeteners and refined sugar. I also find that they promote cravings. I'm not perfect, and I have my share of sweets, but I do try to avoid.

Having great success SP proved to me what sugar does to my weight loss. My sweet tooth seems insatiable , have never lost the craving. I try to Kerri myself in , there is a Hershey kissed or a dove chocolate on tracker everyday. I do use Trivia for my cereal and have used spends for baking.

I also use Truvia or Splenda Naturals for my cereal and coffee. For baking I use Truvia for baking. I don't use regular white sugar anymore, but may use a tsp of brown sugar or honey in my oatmeal for a treat.

I gave up artificial sweeteners about 4 years ago and have been really glad. I do use a little Truvia occasionally. My path has been to learn to eat less refined sugars and less sugar in general; WIP!

I have cut back on sugar for some time now and at the moment have been using nothing but a tiny squirt of liquid stevia in my tea when I have a cup. At the moment I'm cutting out all carbs except fruit and veggies so haven't needed any sweetener in anything. Next week when I start adding in a few carbs (grains and sweet potatoes) I'll probably use a tsp of honey or maple syrup on my oatmeal. Even before I tried this low carb routine I would only use a tsp of raw sugar or honey on my oatmeal and very little for anything else.
However, if I bake I will not be using any artificial sweeteners. I'll make the real deal since it will be more for others than myself. I can deal with a small piece of the real thing on occasion. The key word here is occasionally. I really can't tell whether cutting back drastically on sugar makes any difference in how I feel nor if it affects my cravings. Perhaps a little, as when I have something sweet, it is much easier to want to go for a second helping. So I just don't have any baked goods nor other sweets very often. The only exception is a square of dark chocolate in the evening.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your thoughts and experiences with non-sugar sweeteners. I know it is a topic that has different views. I guess for me I have come to a place where I do want to cut down on artificial sweeteners, but have found Truvia products to be a good compromise. I've read articles that of the regular sugar replacements Truvia and sugar alcohols are not bad choices. I read that in the following two articles, which I'll assume are based on some research: authoritynutrition.com/4-healthy-natural-sweeteners/ and www.rodalesorganiclife.com/food/the-5-worst-sweeteners-5-healthy-alternatives?slide=1/slide/7I tend to get gastrointestinal problems from too much sucralose, but am lucky that I don't so much from sugar alcohols, which are also notorious for that. As a cook/baker I tend to prefer the Truvia products, partly because the baking products include some sugar, and because I personally find stevia to have less of a strange after-taste. DebDoesWW Thanks for visiting my blog, and I'm glad that I didn't do anything too wrong in posting my blog address. This will be the only place I'll mention it here.

cyndee,I also checked out your blog.It is really good.I am one of those who can't give up sweeteners.I use Truvia only as I like the more natural taste.I do have digestive problems with some sweeteners basically anything ending in "ol" is bad for IBS but Truvia doesn't seem to bother me.Sugar alcohol and sucrose is a whole different problem though. Thanks for the link to your blog.

Thank you, Becky. Yes, as you saw in my blog Truvia products are pretty much my favorites too. [LOL-I'm not on their payroll] The baking blends, do have sugar, but as a baking enthusiast I know that having some makes a difference in the quality of the baking. But I still like how they are still so much lower in sugar than the 100% real thing. I'm not sure if people with diabetes do/should use the Truvia baking products. I'd be curious to hear from someone with diabetes to see if they do. In any case, it still helps me keep my sugar down. I've normalized my glucose levels over the years.

cyndee I just found your blog and enjoyed it. I learned a lot about sweeteners and will look for some of the products you mentioned. I have almost quit baking completely since I joined WW but I do make some things at Christmas. For those items, I use regular sugar because I don't want to experiment with known recipes. I use Truvia liquid in some teas and hot chocolate and don't have any problems with digestive issues with the little amount I use. I use the brown sugar Splenda in my homemade BBQ sauce and it works well. Thank you for sharing your link and telling us about your blog. Best of luck. You write well!
