hi girls, Ginny no this discussion was not silly.you were getting your feelings out and that is ok plus we all have learned something for talking about it.also a lot of information was given for what I call "t o store in the encyclopedia
of my brain."
that's what I tell my doctor when I ask a question abut something I am unaware of.
when Steve who is a Pfaff and Viking dealer (and works on my brother if needed)gives a lecture at our quilt group he will tell us: "you have a machine sitting in the closet use it.machines like to be used."
then he went on to tell stories how quilters will let machines set for 2 years or longer and then g them out and they won't work.so they bring the machine in to be fixed so they can get a project done for Christmas. how true that is.
I EVER get my fanny to really clean the basement like I want my little gold gem will be on the table..then I might have 3 projects going and work on what ever I feel like.
KEEP THAT FEATHERWEIGHT NEVER GET RID OF IT.my friend and Joyce had one and traded it in.she did not know what she had.I asked her how many times have you kicked yourself?" she said "alot"
even with all the big fancy machines at sew day there are a few ladies who will bring their FW in Nita is one.all depends what they are working on and if all they are going to do is straight stitching.
Ginny get out your FW and paly with it. might not hurt to see if it needs tune up.
I would not be surprised if maybe the timing is off on your machine.
what is the bobbin doing?
cj I feel the same way bout my little Gold Jem and my Eversewn.
my dsil Mona had a 40 year old viking that gave out.Don't think she took it in to get checked. she went to Walmart bought a viking and love it.
Superbowl Sunday the guys would watch the game.Mona and Connie would be in the back craft room making cat beds.
I AM PONDERING WHAT TO DO WITH MY HANDS AT NIGHT.
do I want to restart the pink cable scarf , crochet or do some embroidery work??phyl

Phyl, Sorry I missed your post.....and I am so thankful for everyones input here as we wait for what is going on with my machine. Or I should say I wait and the rest of you put up with my ruminations. I do not have a lot of an eye for detail at night, as I am getting tired. As far as evenings go, I opt for something that does not require much close detail. For me, that would be crocheting or not too detailed embroidery.
Ok blabbering again here.....berninas are too pricey for me- but they look like great machines. Think the Husqvarna line (Viking) is where I will end up. Honestly there is a singer that gets GREAT reviews....but I am hoping to avoid the kind of problems I am having now. And no, I am not getting rid of my featherweight. G

Wow, quiet here today! We pretty much stayed put today, except for a trip to the store to stock up on a few things. A local chain here has an annual “can can” sale - and its a great time to get some awesome deals on staples. I got some cleaning done too and a load of laundry. Nice to have a quiet day. I also worked through shredding another box of papers from my mom’s estate. I forget how every night for several weeks I brought home large plastic bags of unfiled papers of hers, which I organized and straightened out in case they were needed, Well now with the estate being closed I am shredding them. A very lengthy process. Thought I had found my last box 3 months ago, and just found one more.
So far my crafting today was looking at the Herrschenners catalog online. I am looking for the “perfect” stamped cross stitch kit. Don’t ask me what that is, but I will know it when I see it.
Have a good night all Ginny

Oh yes, Phyl what will push me into a somewhat pricier machine is that I want one with a large throat space. But I also do not want to spend $5000 and up....so that limits me to several choices. WIll know next week if my machine can be repaired. G

Evening girls, Today Jim and Theresa were here. we went to lunch at senior villa. great Mexican food place with great service.
Then it was Home Depot.Theresa wanted to look at toaster ovens or what ever they call the bigger ones now. we exchanged presents.
oh my gosh I was excited.she gave me a mini oliso pink iron. I can take this one on retreats, classes and sew days.
I gave her a gift card to the quilt peddler. told her to save this one for when we are together.also a sweatshirt.
Theresa told me she has been trying to figure out what to get me because over the years I have given her so much.
Ginny here is a tip"after years of watching a guy/gal showing how a machine works, using that old stiff fabric. I take several fabrics with.cotton, jeans ,thin etc an try those fabric out on the machines. that helps me choose witch machine I want.
don't be afraid to go back and try the fabrics again.
you have to buy a new machine there is one out there for you. you will know what brand and model is right for you.
FOR some reason I have been awake since 3 am. hope I can stay awake for tonight's Jeopardy. phyl

Phyl- indeed it stinks that you were awake since 3 am...that just seems to happen to all of us from time to time. I too am hoping you can make to to Jeopardy tonight- think they are having some of the great contestants from other years on. I do not watch it - usually Dh has on something he wants to see at that hour. Again, wonderful advice about a sewing machine. I can see you are very experienced and know what you are doing. Lets see what next week brings and if my machine can be repaired or not. What a lovely gift from Theresa!! On videos those mini oliiso irons look amazingly especially for travel. Now you have one!!! You will get a lot of use from it for sure and it will make retreats much easier for you.
Worked this am and then came home to babysit DGD. Just got her in for a nap..next on my list is to make dinner. Got everyone coming for dinner tonight- sort of a catch as catch can meal, as not everyone will be arriving at the same time.
Perhaps my only crafting today was making homemade playdough with Dgd. Yes, I will count that!!!!
Miss CJ, Ruth, Sue and Meg....hope everyone is ok.
Oh! I called about the shingles vaccine yesterday. For some silly reason, I get it for free, but for Dh we have to pay a $34 a shot. I got the original vaccine (zostavex?) and can get shingrix (sp). Will have to see where to get it as my insurance was picky - insisting that either an MD or a nurse practitioner gave it. My mom had shingles, and I want to avoid that if I can.
Have a great day Ginny

We had about an inch of snow this morning, but only in the southern part of the valley where I live. There may be more next week. We need to have a lot of snow to make the summer safe.
Quilting was this morning. Almost everyone was there. I didn't get very much crocheting done. I'm back working on the blue, pink and purple variegated infinity scarf again. I'm probably about halfway finished.

Hello to all. I don't think I got any crafting done yesterday and none so far today either. We went to Walmart earlier and dh was and still is in a grumpy mood. I still wonder why he wants to go when he knows it will make him grumpy. I'd be more than happy to go myself
Stupid home delivery pharmacy messed up again. It sounded like a great idea to change to them but so far it's looking like that was a bad idea. I may have to change back to my local pharmacy
Ginny, It sounds as though you'll have a nice evening with all your children and grandchildren visiting for dinner. And making the homemade play dough is fun too.
Sue they had forecast am snow for us but we didn't get any.
Phyl, I've seen that brand of iron but haven't seen the mini ones but it sure sounds like a fantastic gift.

Sue, bet it was nice to get out to quilting group and see everyone! That you did not get much work done on your scarf sounds like you probably had a good time visiting with your friends. So glad you got out and were able to socialize a bit. Indeed, for us too its a dry winter. Winter still has a lot of time left...lets hope that you get sufficient snow in your area to make this a more normal winter.
Ruth, sorry about a grumpy Dh and problems with the mail order pharmacy. My experience is when it works its wonderful but when they mess up, its next to impossible to correct. They also do not account for that you might not take every medicine every day- their system cannot comprehend that. I hope you can find a way to work around this to get the good prices offered by mail order pharmacy but also the accuracy and ease of use of a local pharmacy. I wish I did not have to use mail order but do because it is more cost effective. Perhaps Dh thought that if he went to Walmart with you it would break his grumpy mood? But it goes that way some times, when a nice trip to the store would be best accomplished by yourself, minus the bad mood. Hope that tomorrow is a better day and he is in a happier frame of mind.
Long but fun day with the little ones. And yes, play do is going to have to count as my crafting for today- unless I check out patterns or something like that after I finish checking email. Ginny

Ginny, I don't know why my dh gets so tense and anxious when we go shopping. He's usually the one that wants to go than as we get closer to being ready to go he gets more and more anxious about it. When there's a lot of people around it makes it worse. I donn't know how he's going to do when we get to more populated areas but no he doesn't go out to help his grumpy mood, it's the going out that makes him grumpy. I guess we all have our moods.
I think I finally figured out what I was doing wrong while making the "magic" potholders. I just finished one and it came out fine. I want to make a bunch of them because our living space when we're away is going to be small and short of cupboard and counter space until we get everything as we want it so I have to make some with loops so I can hang them and keep them out of the way. I'm also making some little hanging "baskets" (out of yarn) to put pens and pencils in and also my crochet hooks. I'm planning on putting a lot of stuff into a small space in a way that we're not buried in it. Things like onions and potatoes will be in hanging bags and same with plants that will hang in windows. I plan to grow some basil, thyme, rosemary, etc but can't have them sitting on surfaces that are needed for other things. I also want to make some of the magic potholders for ddil.
Sue when I went to Caps for Kids meetings we never got much done while there either. It was mostly talking and I did a lot of helping others with stitches that were new to them and other things they wanted to now about crocheting. Most ppl there crocheted and just a couple knitted.

Are those magic potholders the ones that fold around on themselves? (What a crummy description!). I made them years ago, and they were fun- the directions I had were pretty easy, I think. Sounds like you have some great ideas for space savers, and also yarn stash busters at the same time. In the dead of winter, its not where my head goes to think about herbs to grow. But all the seed catalogs are coming out, we got one in the mail a week or so ago. I have grown basil and have a perennial thyme plant outside. In my area winters are too harsh to grow rosemary as a perennial-l I had at one point a variety that was meant to survive a NY winter, but it only lasted 2 years. Hope that Indiana winters are a bit easier and you can grow it. Rosemary is a pretty plant for an herb garden and none of our area critters (rabbits, woodchucks and deer) seem to like to eat it.
My Dh likes to go to Walmart when its not crowded. He just hates crowds in general. For us, we have found that Wednesday mornings are great and the stores are pretty empty, making it a more pleasant journey.
Prayers for Australia....hope that the weather shifts and the fires are brought under control. Ginny

BTW- Ruth such a pretty avatar!
And my home made play-dough saved the day yesterday, the kids were getting antsy after dinner while the adults kept eating so we brought out the play dough and they got creative.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well I haven't been doing much, so didn't have anything to post about I did finally finish a book I'd been reading for about 4 days. It was just not that interesting but I didn't want to leave it unfinished. I'm anxious to start reading another book that I'll hopefully enjoy more. The weather here has been milder after the snow earlier this week and this weekend it's supposed to be in the 60s, so very strange January weather. Take care everyone and have a great weekend!
