DH and I are scheduled August 21 to met up with a friend traveling from NYC to Maui. She has a layover in SFO and we have dinner scheduled at a favorite restaurant. The Bay Area including San Francisco is changing mask recommendations to requirements in public places. DH contemplated having our friend stay with us here at home, but we are going to go ahead and stick to our original plan. We are all vaccinated.
We will also have hotel rooms, so if we freak out we could just have room service together. We'll see.
Mr. Lani and I are booked in November for Maui. I'm hoping boosters may be available before that time. Again, just have to wait and see how things play out.

Ron's work (chemical plant) went back to masks yesterday. Not sure about JD's but he tends to wear his anyway. Just real Louisiana is out of room in their hospitals. Texas has had more cases last week than they've had since mid-2020. "Overall on Thursday, Texas hospitals reported 5,662 patients hospitalized with COVID. A week earlier, COVID hospitalizations were 3,566. On July 1, it was 1,591."
The 7-day average of new daily COVID-19 cases is 78,472, according to data from the Washington Post. New daily cases rose 54.2% over the past week, while deaths rose by 31.6% and hospitalizations by 42.2%.

New York City is now requiring proof of vaccine to eat indoors at restaurants and in fitness facilities. We are supposed to visit NYC in October and really, all of this makes me feel a bit safer. Broadway theaters are also requiring proof of vaccination (or negative Covid test).

Wonder when the fake vaccine cards will start popping up That was my first reaction to the New York City announcement.

Wonder when the fake vaccine cards will start popping up They already have. And in some cases, they aren't working.

Wonder when the fake vaccine cards will start popping up The people who buy these are nuts. It cost them money to get them, while the vaccine is free. But as someone posted elsewhere, it's not about the money. I just don't get it. You're that opposed to vaccination so you won't get one, yet you'll put yourself and others at risk.

The true anti-vaxxers will not go there IMO. They want to confront people and make a point of their "freedom".

Just talked to my sister in law. my brother, she and nephew all have covid. brother is at the hospital seeing if he needs to be admitted; sister in law had some IV cocktail and is feeling tired but ok; nephew is back in Houston, has pneumonia but medicated and feeling ok brother and nephew are vaccinated, sister in law isn't.
My brother is having hot/cold flashes and has a deep cough, but they don't know if it's pneumonia or just a cough since it's dry. Testing now to see what's going on. He's a big guy with a barrel chest, deep lungs.

DotRen, may they all have a good outcome. Sounds scary. CDC Director says vaccines no longer prevent transmission of Covid. I'm not sure if it was ever proved that they did, maybe before Delta. My understanding is it has to do with the initial viral load of the Delta variant. The news I have seen says vaccinated and unvaccinated people have the same amount of virus shedding when first infected, even though vaccinated folks don't develop as severe symptoms and may even be asymptomatic. Good news just keeps on a-comin'.

Still no update on my brother. The hospital is out of beds at the moment I didn't realize Cameron County was so bad. They've had almost 1600 cases in the last week. I didn't see how many hospitalizations. Many of the hospitals here have gone back to n95 masks again.

They admitted him, he doesn't really feel that bad, but they said something about his kidneys (according to my SIL). He was just glad to be in a dark, quiet room after sitting in the ER room all night.

Monterey County (to the south of me) will require all public employees to be vaccinated, allowing "authorized exemptions". No one knows what the exemptions are. The Sheriff has already said he won't require his staff to be vaccinated. Here we go...
