This is a thread devoted to those in their 50s & 60s and beyond who don't have children or grandchildren but live rich, full lives. Please feel free to join our stroll thru life and come back often for support and to share. **************************************** Saturday is National Weed Appreciation Day. Some are edible and some medicinal as I am sure our resident MG can tell us and some are just a pain. Yes, crabgrass, I mean you.
Sunday is National Mom and Pop Business Day. I am sure they are all suffering through these tough days. I always seek out small businesses to support and will continue once we are allowed free range again. I am sure a lot of the ones I frequented will not reopen.

63 was yesterday's high! weird! 78 is norm and 88 coming in a few days.
no plans ...none until next Friday's last shot! puzzle, laundry, cooking, dog walk, some clutter cleaning, and a book . Charles Todd's mystery series about WW1 nurse is one you might like.
the hand is getting better. nature's reminder to use ipad less. really need to do stuff in yard but not pushing my luck.
ran low fever last night with head clog, fatigue, sore throat, headache and thought oh no...then remembered these are possible side effects of the gel shot and I felt like that a bit last Friday. better today. looked it up. never had this with the previous brand (orhovisc) but UHC started only approving Effluxor last fall. at least they work.

Thanks for the start, Chele. According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, "A weed is a plant whose virtue has yet to be discovered." Weeds are also in the eye of the beholder. Right now I have dandelions, dead nettle, and other native "weeds" and the bees and other pollinators are starting to show up. I have to say, however, that crabgrass, goose grass, etc., may never have any virtues realized because they are just nuisances. I hope the stimulus bill will help those Mom and Pop businesses and everyone else hurting right now. Has your back yard dried out any? Do you and Iggy have outdoor plans for the weekend? Does the house still smell of burned beans? Dale refilled the feeder this morning and I think he was messier than the finches.
Kathy, did you place your grocery order? I hope you'll be able to get everything on your list. I think Dale is going to venture out on Tuesday. It's supposed to rain (yet again!), so he figures if he goes early, most people won't be out yet. We'll need salad and fruit, but, like you, we are still pretty well stocked on other items. Are DS/DBIL working from home right now?
Hope you're getting some much-needed rest, Liz! DGN#1 posted on FB this morning that he is absolutely paranoid about getting the virus (he's a bit of a drama king anyway). He works at WM but I just told him to limit his contact and build his immune system. He won't do anything except express paranoia. He works in WV, so there aren't even that many cases in the entire state.
Becky, how's the calf doing today? Are the special exercises from the PT helping? When does the big bandage come off? I know that has to be a pain.
We got into the low 80s yesterday, Linda, so it's unusual for you to be so much colder. I guess that explains the cold front we are supposed to get. Definitely don't push your luck in the yard until your hand feels much better. How are the fever, etc. doing today? I think any symptoms we have right now makes us think "oh no". I heard on the news this morning that loss of taste and smell are new Covid symptoms they are adding to the list. With allergy season here, that's about an every day thing.
I just heard that the governor of Kentucky is warning his people to stay out of Tennessee unless they have to go for work because we don't have the same protections in place against the virus that they do. I also heard that NC is doing stay at home now, but we're still doing it "the Trump way", which is why we have 4 times the number of cases KY does. We have a beautiful day with bright sunshine and temps headed into the 80s. My goal is to transplant seedlings and wash the car, which is filthy from driving in all the rain we've been having. I'm still having difficulty with what I'm growing in the AeroGardens for some reason, but things seem to be doing well under the grow lights. I think the 4 varieties of tomatoes are ready to transplant, and I know the cukes and zukes are very ready. I'm not sure the eggplant has it 2nd set of leaves, so that may have to wait a week or so to let them get a little more size on them. Kale and chard are also very ready for their new pots. Have a lovely day. BBL

Thanks for the start Chele.I agree some of these mom and pop places may not make it but I hope they do.
Linda We got up to 89 yesterday.Today we started out at 75 and it's raining now and it's down to 64.Glad your hand is getting better.
Karen The calf muscle is still very sore. The exercises help some I guess but I feel it of course when I do them.If I sit too long I notice my knee gets stiff.I can take the long bandage off Wednesday and I'm counting down the days.LOL.Enjoy your sunny day.

Chele, thanks for the start. The county mows the easement between my house and my neighbor and mows around the pond. I'm not sure if that is on hold for now, but it doesn't look like they've been out for a couple of weeks. Some pretty wildflowers have sprung up in pink, lavender and white. I saw a monarch butterfly fluttering around them yesterday. You can see some of the pink ones to the right of the hawk. Crabgrass is evil. I like to support small stores too and hope they survive this. I saw a couple of sandhill cranes with a small chick. They're so cute and fluffy when they're little. Linda, wow on being in the 60s! We're heading up for record temps in the 90s and are barely cooling off below 70 at night. Glad the hand and effects from the shot are getting better. I know, if I so much as sneeze I start worrying. Karen, I will probably do my grocery order early next week. I want to get enough for a month and be done with it. It's a good time to be a vegetarian. Publix has been out of most meat for at least a week now. I guess that's a side effect of everyone cooking at home. I have a good supply of veggie burgers, so that may be my main course on some days. I've heard that the best time to go to the store is late morning, so after the morning rush and before the afternoon crowds. Yes, DS finally got her work desktop with the VPN software installed so she can work at home. They gave it to her to take home and then she found out the software hadn't been installed and she had to be back in. DBIL has been working from home since the start of this. Becky, sounds like good progress on the knee, but sorry the muscle is still sore. I'm not ready for this heat yet. It's not even comfortable out on the porch right now, but we're supposed to get a little cooler this week. Liz, how are you doing after another crazy week?

Read an article on how Asia flattened the curve partly by having everyone wear masks so the wearer does not pass on germs.
“ Masks don’t have to be complex to be effective. A 2013 paper tested a variety of household materials and found that something as simple as two layers of a cotton T-shirt is highly effective at blocking virus particles of a wide range of sizes. Oxford University found evidence this month for the effectiveness of simple fabric mouth and nose covers to be so compelling they now are officially acceptable for use in a hospital in many situations. Hospitals running short of N95-rated masks are turning to homemade cloth masks themselves; if it’s good enough to use in a hospital, it’s good enough for a walk to the store. The reasons the WHO cites for its anti-mask advice are based not on science but on three spurious policy arguments. First, there are not enough masks for hospital workers. Second, masks may themselves become contaminated and pass on an infection to the people wearing them. Third, masks could encourage people to engage in more risky behavior. None of these is a good reason to avoid wearing a mask in public. Yes, there is a shortage of manufactured masks, and these should go to hospital workers. But anyone can make a mask at home by cutting up a cotton T-shirt, tying it back together and then washing it at the end of the day. Another approach, recommended by the Hong Kong Consumer Council, involves rigging a simple mask with a paper towel and rubber bands that can be thrown in the trash at the end of each day. It’s true masks can become contaminated. But better a mask gets contaminated than the person who is wearing it. It is not hard to wash or dispose of a mask at the end of the day and then wash hands thoroughly to prevent a contaminated mask from spreading infection.”

Here's a cool article on birdwatchig with lots of app recommendations: Bird Watching in the Pandemic. Becky, I hope the calf muscle will loosen up for you. Do you remove the long bandage on your own? Do you still have home health nurses or just PT? Sorry about the stress you're feeling in our current situation, Linda. I would probably feel it, too, if I weren't in such a remote area. I can defintely relate to the allergie issues, however. Hope the sudafed took care of yours. Funny how they were originally saying masks didn't help unless they were N95 and now they say they do and it doesn't have to be N95. I know a lot of people sewing simple masks for hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical places. I may have to get brave and open the sewing machine. Reusable, by virtue of being washable, is the way to go. Kathy, I can see those wildflowers near the hawk. I guess that's a benefit of the county not mowing. The sandhill crane had to have been adorable with his peach fuzz feathers. LOL on a good time to be a vegetarian. I find my favorite veggie burgers are from Trader Joe's. They have a Thai Chili Veggie Burger that is my #1, followed closely by their Quinoa Cowboy Veggie Burger. I think I'm down to my last box of each (4 in a box), so I was really looking forward to going to Asheville next week to restock, but I'm thinking about canceling the car service appointment due to the increasing number of Covid cases there and NC being on safer at home orders. We could eat at least a month on what we have in the freezer, but my problem is fresh fruits and salad. With it getting warmer here, Dale is craving lemonade but is resisting going to Weigel's which he refers to as a "petri dish". I think we found a brand of frozen limeade and lemonade that has sugar instead of HFCS, so we'll try that. Good that DS and DBIL are both now able to work from home. Dale said a lot of the ads for researchers are starting to read that you work remote for now and that could chang after the crisis ends. He won't be applying for any of those jobs. I transplanted all the seedlings except the eggplant and peppers today. It took me over 3 hours. If they all survive, I will have a large number of plants to donate to the plant sale and still have enough for us here. The chard was looking a little wilted after sitting in the sun and wind for a little while but I hope it will bounce back now that it's back inside under the grow lights. I think tomorrow will just be a workout clothes laundry day. We are supposed to get some rain but only a 60% chance. We are expecting Linda's cold front to roll in tomorrow night. Weather Underground now has a coronavirus tracking map icon next to the weather map one.

Karen I will try to take the bandage off myself first. If I can't or don't want to do it the case manager said PT will do it.I only had home health nurse come out one time and that was when the bruising got really bad and hurt so much. The bruises are still there but have gotten some lighter.PT is scheduled 3 days a week until the PT offices open back up.Kenneth made a 3 bean chili tonight that was good.It had ground beef in it so I know you couldn't eat it but it really tasted good.I sent him to Elgin to get takeout at Meyers for lunch because I was tired of salads. It was good but you don't get as much in the drive thru and it costs a few $ more.

Becky, hope the bandage goes well.
Ab finally settled down. Fever down. Decongested! Thinking about trying elderberry drops.

Just waving hello. I am glad you are all doing relatively well. Becky, you are making great if painful progress. All we can do is keep going.
We had a ton more rain yesterday. The backyard is a marsh. The front slopes down from the house to the sidewalk so it is soft but not as mushy. Today is sunny but windy.

Becky, the 3-bean chili would be good with a ground plant-based product in place of the ground beef. I hope Kenneth made enough for leftovers because chili is usually even better then 2nd day or beyond. I'm glad the bruises are fading. Is the swelling as well? Salads can get monotonous after a while, so I know Meyers was a welcome change. I guess their takeout containers don't hold as much as their plates. Zoom is going through the roof these days. We have a conference call on Friday through Zoom as well. Yes, it has to be really weird "going to" Sunday School and Church online, but I'm afraid it's the way of the world right now. I wouldn't recommend elderberry right now, Linda. Studies have shown that if you get the virus, it can result in a cytokine storm, making the virus worse. If you're looking for something for allergies, what about freeze-dried stinging nettles? If you're looking to build immunity, rhodiola rosea is good, as well as cordyceps mushrooms. Other recommendations from experts are zinc, seleniuim, and high does (2K-4K) Vitamin C. Do your research to make sure there are no reactions with your current meds. Chele, more rain? Are you expecting at least a few dry days this coming week? Are you expecting a "cool" front like we are? We got a rude awakening a little after 6 am when the weather alert went off. We got some pretty intense storms that seemed even more intense because it was still dark, so the lightning seemed brighter. Had hail and strong winds, and power went out a couple of times (YAY, generator!). Still have some winds but rain has moved out. Are you getting some rest, Liz? What's the Wally status? Are the middle-of-the-night trips continuing? Our positive cases, hospitlizations, and deaths are all up since yesterday. But not like yours, I'm sure. Fortunately, our local cases are holding steady. Kathy, did you get any rain from the system that hit us early this morning? DB said they have police at their state lines on interstates stopping cars from NY, NJ, and LA. FYI, alcohol content in Bath & Body Works hand sanitizers is only 68%. Recommended level is at least 70%. I plan to make up a batch of my own tomorrow with 91%. Workout clothes are clean and I have a batch of savory oats done. Not much else on the agenda. We started streaming Designated Survivor. Maybe not the best option for these times, but it's something we haven't seen before.

Thanks on the elderberry. also noticed it is a laxative and diuretic.
Felt better this morning..no fever and ears unclogged. hand almost ok. NowI better keep up my allergy meds. Tonight will be chicken and dumplings
we are paying the cleaning lady for now and not having her come. So my jobs just escalated! Today was hall bath, one bed change, three loads of laundry and kitchen floor. Yuck. At least the non-feather quilt can dry in the sun on my retractable line. Then it goes To dryer on cool air to get rid of pollen.

Just popping in and hope everyone is having a good day. It's still hot and dry here and the water level in the pond is pretty low. Our rainy season doesn't start until May, but I hope we get some before then to avoid wildfires. Karen, I didn't know that about elderberry and have some here but haven't been taking it. Did they recently change the hand sanitizer recommendations? All the articles I've seen say that the CDC recommends hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol. Here's a fairly recent article: Hand sanitizer I'm honestly not going to worry about 68 vs 70 though since I'm not going anywhere anyway. I do use it sometimes after getting the mail or a delivery, but only after thoroughly washing my hands.
