This is a thread devoted to those in their 50s & 60s and beyond who don't have children or grandchildren but live rich, full lives. Please feel free to join our stroll thru life and come back often for support and to share. **************************************** Last weekend in the weirdest April ever. It reminds of the song by the Grateful Dead with the lyrics “What a long, strange trip it’s been.”
Iggy wants some things from the Middle Eastern deli, so he will drive and I will go in.
Have a good Saturday. BBL.

We made it to the deli and there were only 2 of us inside. The other one was a 20 something with no mask and kept getting too close. My patented “back off” look worked like a charm. Iggy was craving Thai, so I ordered and picked it up. After lunch we went to the garden store for topsoil and manure but it was too packed and no one was wearing masks. We will order curbside pickup from Lowe’s, because I wasn’t going inside to pay for it. The Parking lot was full and people were parked in the grass.
At least we got out of the house today. I am doing laundry and Iggy is moving some things from garage to shed. He moved Mr. Lemon to the outside yesterday and got out the patio furniture and umbrella. Now it’s spring. Our veggie plants should be shipping from Burpee next week.
I hope you are all enjoying the day.

Thanks for the start, Chele. You must be feeling better these days because you are logging in before me. I'm glad the crowd was non-existent at the deli. Good time to work on your "back off" stare. Sounds like everyone's Lowe's are crazy. You had a busy morning. I know you are glad to have Mr. Lemon back outside. What veggie plants did you get from Burpee? How was Thai? Did you make cornbread? Amen on weirdest April ever--and weirdest just about any month but September (2001) I've said that 2020 could well be called the lost year. You hit the nail on the head with the Dead song. And the trip continues.
Kathy, I had forgotten about the theme park folks also being furloughed recently. That will be a major mess for unemployment, even with their being auto-enrolled. Someone on an a.m. news show postulated that the reason the GA governor decided to reopen the state is they can't afford to pay unemployment claims. And on the same show, they had a barber who reopened his shop say essentially that there is capacity in the hospitals right now so we don't have to worry about more people getting infected. Talk about lambs to the slaughter! I hadn't thought about Dr. Birx sewnding Morse code. I thought it was more that she was trying to bite her lip without letting it bleed. And, now Trump says he was just joking. Right!! Has your weather cleared?
So AZ also has an unemployment mess, Linda? 4 to 6 weeks is outrageous for people who have to pay rent, utilities, etc. I hope you slept better last night. At least your sleeplessness led to some productivity. I'll bet the rollatini was even better warmed up. Those kinds of dishes usually are.
Becky, I agree that it's too soon to open restaurants. I hope your governor will be a bit more prudent, but no guarantees with any of them right now. I'm amazed at how steep the fine is for not wearing a mask there. But I can see some people not wearing one intentionally just to see if they will be arrested and put in jail. I desparately need hair cut but have no idea when the salons are opening or if I'll be brave enough to go for a while even if they are. Opening stores won't help if nobody goes back to them and will hurt the people who will have to give up unemployment but may not get paid. I agree that Trump needs to let the docs do the medical stuff. I heard that Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx weren't even at the briefing yesterday. YIKES! on 95!!! I hope that's not an omen of things to come this summer. 80s sound so much more comfortable.
The governor sounded a little more positive on this morning's briefing, Liz. I hope life will ease for you a bit, but I know you will have to start planning for the next round of covid that is supposed to hit during flu season. How are Gary and the pups? I hope you'll have a restful weekend.
I finished getting my tablet set up, got the screen protector installed and have a nice new photo on wallpaper from one of the Smoky Mountains trail photos. The one thing I couldn't do was get Kindle to load properly so I could use it to read. My Kindle isn't on the list on our Amazon account for some reason and I can't get it registered. It started to malfunction on my old laptop so I wonder if my entire account is messed up. As long as my Kindle works, I guess I'll just continue using it to read, even though it doesn't hold a charge for long. We have rain off and on again today. Good day to stay inside.

Chele, thanks for the start. Glad you were able to get to the deli. I'm imagining that "back off" stare was pretty intense, especially with a mask on. You know it's spring when Mr. Lemon returns to the outdoors! I'm sure a lot of people are doing work on their homes since they're stuck there, so not surprised that Lowe's was busy. Long, strange trip is a good way to describe this April. I just wish this trip was over.
Karen, I agree on this being the lost year. I'm sure not wanting to pay for unemployment is part of the reason states are trying to reopen. I saw that same show with the barber. Weather is still overcast, but it hasn't been raining. Hope you can get the Kindle registered. These devices are great when they work. I've been using mine a lot lately to check out library ebooks. My mom's DVR just died. She has AT&T's Uverse and they're sending her a new box, so we're hoping she'll be able to hook it up.
Liz, how are you doing?
I found another thing that's cheaper right now. My SiriusXM subscription was about to renew and their full price was over $300. You can go on their website now and renew without going through the cancellation ritual. I got a year for $60. I'm using it more for streaming inside than in the car right now.
Waving to Becky and Linda. Hope everyone has a good Saturday.

You did better than I...my Sirius radio all Access was to renew in May at $ 320, but I got $99. Mainly listening in Apple TV app or iPad since I am never in the car.
Sure do hope this April is the only weird one hereafter. You can just hear nature and viruses saying , “Hold my beer. Watch this!”
my hair was a disaster in Feb after new person cut it. I had her partner for 39 years...retired to Hawaii. unless I have a photo , nit sure I want to try her again. It was so short that is is only an inch below my ears at this point and not quite chin length in back. Cutting my bangs was necessary for vision, but I have no talent with any aspect of hair! Hat for sun is looking better and better.
Trying to nibble only stuff that is at least healthy. My system is laughing.
this morning's exercise was early out to west side of the house to prune in shade...100 coming today...kind of cuts off one area to be in.
Got some dead stuff off the mandarin tangerine that never has fruit...but shade for a window and AC compressor is good. Cut back and Pulled put a lot of tall purple ruella coming up..spreads like strawberries and gets tall, gangly and needs constant cutting. Did not realize that when I planted four little ones in 25 feet...and it took over! I try to keep two in nice bush form now.
along that sidewalk the Landscape Cable got pulled out at some point and sun will slowly destroy it, so I got nine feet reburied and lava rock back over it. Blechhh! More to go but I had had it.
sat a while and will go do some puttering in bedroom...more loose photos to get into travel albums! I think they multiply in the dark. Two multi photo frames with kids who are now years and years older..getting 5x7 photos out and frames to Good will drop off this week.
One Nephew Lives in Newport Beach where 40,000 people hit the beach yesterday in the heat wave in spite of social distancing state order. Think they need to start handing out tickets. Some places those tickets are $1000. Before this people have been showing up and trashing the beach and whole area. His is LA county hit spot for virus.
Our guv will allow elective surgery In certain hospitals and outpatient places May 1 since we passed peak on hospitals two weeks ago instead of middle of May. They have been laying off people who work those areas. No word on what happens with nonessential businesses when it is scheduled to end April 30. I will stick to infrequent grocery and pharm trips with my mask.
I like the Walmart idea of one way aisles. Wish other stores would do that.

Welcome moonriver ! Looks like you found the right group and your post came through fine. Where are you from? I'm in Florida.
Linda, I'm afraid the beaches here are going to be really crowded since it's the only entertainment that's open. Publix started doing the one way aisles, but I've seen comments saying it's still hard to keep your distance in there when it's busy. I guess I'll keep using delivery for now, but it's more expensive. They're still able to do same or next day delivery here, so at least it's pretty fast.

Chele, thanks for the idea. That was the first place I tried. I also tried the Amazon device forums and no luck there either. Welcome, moonriver. We are all 50s, 60s, and beyond with no kids. We're a fairly small group, but most of us have been here for a while, so just jump in and introduce yourself and you'll catch up with us pretty quickly. I'm Karen from East Tennessee, have my 68th birthday coming up, and live with my husband and our 3 year old basset pup who isn't the least bit spoiled . I'm president of my master gardeners club this year, which has been a huge source of stress with covid-19 challenges. The gals on here have been very helpful with my stress level, and we do our best to support each other through what life throws at us. For that I am truly thankful. Kathy, I'm kind of afraid to do much with the Kindle because I fear losing all my books and magazine subscriptions I have on there. I've seen the library ebook options but haven't registered for any. Have you had any problems getting the books you want? Is DM getting something like the Hopper that Dish has? Dale and I have talked about getting the Hopper the next time our DVR dies on us. WOW!! on SiriusXM. What a deal! And you didn't have to go through hassle you've had to do for years. They were supposed to be having it free for everyone for the month of April, but I couldn't get it on my car radio and we had one of those standalone XM radios from several years ago and it also doesn't work. We do have it as part of our Dish package, so we have several stations. And, with all the music channels we get with Roku, we have a lot more selection. My hair is still growing out, Linda, and I think it actually is where it needs to be finally (after about 3 years). It's going on 3 months since my last hair cut and it's getting long enough that I may have to switch to a ball cap to keep it out of my eyes. I hope you find a sun hat you love. I hope you got back inside before the sun went overhead and the temps got into the 90s. Sorry your mandarin treat hasn't ever fruited. I have a couple of those a day and it would be so much nicer to have them fresh. I hope your nephew and the family weren't among the beach goers. You're right about the need to hand out citations in those places. I understand the need to reopen elective surgery to avoid having to lay off staff, but I'm not sure I would want to have anything done right now. One way aisles work as long as people can follow directions. I've seen too many in parking lots that are clearly marked and they don't seem to know wat a directional arrow is, or what "entrance" and "exit" mean. Good idea, but not holding my breath that it will work. We've been watching a Netflix series called The Stranger that is pretty intense. There are only 8 episodes and we're on 5 right now, so I hope they wrap up the loose ends. There are a lot of them.

Denise, another of our regulars, Liz, is a hospital administrator in NYC. The rest of us are retired. Thank you for serving on the frontlines in this crisis. You have a tough job and you're a hero. Stay safe and healthy.

Chele Thanks for the start. I don't know if I think this way because I live in a county where masks are mandated but I can't believe that many people are going around not wearing masks.I am sure you both enjoyed getting out of the house. Karen I know Abbott needs to start opening Texas back up because everyone is worried about the bottoming out of oil prices.I read where several mayors in West Texas wrote him because they were wanting to open business back up because they don't have many cases. That's also where most of the oil fields are so I know they are hurting.Bastrop County went up another 5 cases yesterday and that doesn't include any cases that might be confirmed from the testing of asymptomatic people the last 2 days.Travis and Williamson Counties numbers are still bad so I don't see how much can reopen here yet.Yes 95 is too hot.It got up to 98 in Austin yesterday. We got a cool front in overnight and 78 felt much better today.Unfortunately it won't stay this cool for long. Welcome moonriver. Linda They have lifted the ban on some elective surgeries here also.I wish our Walmart had the one way aisles. At least everyone seems to be wearing masks. Karen We have the Hopper. Now when you subscribe to DISH you also get the Google Assistant remote.I never connected mine to Wifi but it is nice to have.I love the Hopper. My hair has gotten so thick on top it is always getting in my eyes.
