I'm getting nervous .. Looking for your opinions. When you do venture out to the Salon, what do you think will make you feel safe? Comfortable ? Uncomfortable? What I know right now is .. 1 client at a time 1 person only, no family or friends tagging along wait in your car until called in no magazines no coffee/tea/water 6' apart from any other stylists sanitize station between clients masks for both (in the middle of the night I was worried about a client forgetting a mask and me running out of the disposable ones) my light bulb moment, I'll give them a towel to cover their face, we have hundreds of them! FWIW I won't be going for awhile. Since I am over 65 although with no pre-existing conditions, I don't plan to take chances for awhile. Anyway, if I was going to do, I would want all of the above plus the stylist would need to wear gloves. My stylist is in her own space (rented room in a building that rents to different stylists) so I don't have to worry about others being there. The real risk is being close to someone for that long and the risk of infection over the ventilation system from other rooms in the building. I would probably want to get in and out as quickly as possible. For example, I go in to get color done and usually the stylist may trim my hair (if needed) and would blow dry it. I also always get roots done and sometimes highlights. If I was going in I would just get the roots done and nothing else. I wouldn't even let her blow dry the hair. I would just get the roots done and get out as quickly as possible.

After a 2+ hour meeting and many what ifs, we are opening on Friday, May 15th.
The salon has been transformed into small private areas divided by rods near the ceiling and clear shower curtains. We can slide them to open or close the area much like the curtain around a hospital bed.
Alcohol spray at each shampoo bowl. Disinfectant wipes at each station.
Clients wait in their car until called in.
1 client at a time, no over lapping.
Signs all over the front door.
Blasting red sign.. if you have any signs of covid or illness do not enter.
At the front door. Temp taken. Masked. Sanitize hands.
Stylists. Temp taken on arrival. Masks.
No magazines. No coffee. No chairs in the lobby.
Near constant sanitation before, after, during services. Stations, shampoo area, bathroom, reception desk, phone, door handles.
I called all of my clients, and am booked solid for the next 3 weeks.
I'm working Friday nights and Sundays alone.
Thursdays with 1 other stylist. We've all spread our schedules out so at most there are 3 stylists working at a time which is too much for me.
I do not see myself working on Saturdays for a long time, too busy.
I'm not sure what else we can do. Eventually we have to get back to work. I'd love to wait until we are completely safe but when will that be? 6 months ? A year? 2 years?

Thank you Deb. I am seeing it now, never looked at the top of the screen for a sub board. Hopefully I'm the only one who didn't see it :-)

We opened today, I was not going to go in but I got booked so fast and ran out of time on my scheduled days.
1 appointment. Color/cut
Two other stylists were there for about 1/2 the time.
It was very uncomfortable. Not personal. The salon is full of obstacles. The mask makes it impossible to talk, it's hot and slips down or rides up super annoying.
Yes I am complaining.
5 stylists are working tomorrow, I will not be there. I am working Sunday afternoon - alone.

it's ok to complain. i can imagine it's strange with the current state of things. i'm sure in time you'll get back into your groove with the new normal.

Jennifer With the restrictions and how uncomfortable it is right now, would you consider taking clients at your home, or theirs? This is just a question of curiosity.

I am also not set up at home to do hair, sure I cut my husband's hair and my boys but I'm hanging them in the sink to wash their hair. It's odd to know the girls are working today and here I sit. I'll be there tomorrow, maybe I'll feel a little better then.

Years ago in California the guy I was going to left the salon he was at. He worked out of his home for awhile until going to another salon. I have no idea if that was legal or not.

luanne, It might have to do with the set-up at home.

Jennifer, bbbearsmom, my questions have mostly been because I was wondering if stylists are going to be limited on the number of clients they can see in a salon, might they start taking some of their clients outside the salon? It is just a wondering statement. I haven't even talked to the guy who does our (mine, dh and dd) to see what he plans to do. Salons are not open yet in New Mexico and won't be until sometime in June.

There is a reason that salons have to have business licenses and adhere to strict protocol. Operating out of one's home is skirting the issues and putting yourself in harms way.
