Ginny,I'm so sorry about your neighbor's son. I heard about that helicopter crash on the news. This must be hard on your son if they were childhood friends. It's so sad to hear of a good young man dying.
As for my cousin,I thank you both for the condolences but I hadn't seen him in probably at least 50 years. He was a lot younger than me and even though my family visited them a lot when we were kids I don't remember him really even playing with my brothers. He was a very quiet little boy. And no, there's no one I could email to find out what he died from. His parents and sister are all deceased and I have never met his son. I did contact another cousin and found out that she was diagnosed with lymphoma in June so during the pandemic had to go through chemo and she lives in a small town in PA so had to go to Buffalo every 5 weeks to get the chemo. She says her lymphoma is gone now. Didn't say what kind of lymphoma it was. Roswell is very good at explaining everthing to their patients but most people don't hear much of what's said because of their fears.
It snowed in the night and is pretty cold but no wind. I made a fire but I guess I'm losing my fire making skills because it was not easy to start and I better go check it to make sure it's still burning.

CJ, thanks for posting that link. That is a NICE quilt. I think that I could make one like that.I do have a question about flannel. Not that I'd make a quilt with it but just out of curiosity. Anytime I've used flannel, as soon as it was washed it began to look pillly. If you buy better flannel does that still happen or does a good quality flannel stay nice. I'm thinking flannel receiving blankets we used to use in the old days and cheaper flannel shirts etc.

Ruth, its my observation that quilt shop flannel holds up very well.....Dd has made rag quilts from quilt shop flannel and they are washed a lot.....and still look great. Of course be prepared to pay $12.99 a yard...but its high quality fabric and keeps its shape well. Sorry that you really have no ability to really keep in touch with those cousins...not that we want to become best friends in an instant, but its nice to keep those childhood contacts from time to time. That is good news that your cousin has been able to beat lymphoma...and yes I think many patients become overwhelmed with information- perhaps do not understand all, only hear what they want to hear and do not always ask the right questions. Perhaps your wood got wet?? And sometimes well, a bad piece of wood makes its way in- some woods just do not burn as well as others. Hope you were able to get a nice fire going to chase the chill away.
CJ- how is the binding coming out?? I feel totally confident that its coming out fine and you are doing a great job. What fabric did you cut for the larger quilt top- and what design quilt are you going to make? Let me know how the no waste flying geese method works. I have never done that before either, hope it is easy and works well.
There are probably 300 American flags lining the street I live on and the street the young man lived on. I heard from my son that Dan (the deceased) actually had a piece of broken glass from the World Trade Center embedded in his West Point ring- very patriotic family.
Got a small amount of crocheting in this am. Gonna put the news on now and see if i can get some more done. Pretty soon I will be making quilts. Better enjoy my crochet time.

I missed your post, CJ but just went back to read it. I'm very sure that you will learn quickly on both the binding and the no waste flyinng geese. You are very skilled in quilting and I'd bet that new ways of doing things will not be a problem I emailed back to my cousin and asked her what kind of lymphoma she had. She told me that they only told her lymphoma. I can't believe that a cancer center like Roswell Park does not explain everything but then again, some people just don't do their job. I do tend to think though that my cousin just didn't hear all that they told her. They did think that she had pancreatic cancer at first which rightly, scared her greatly so she was probably just relieved to find she didn't have that. I got a bit done in crocheting today so far and will get more done. I stopped working on it to make more cookies and clean up the kitchen. The fire burned well after I finally got it started.Dh said he woke up and thought that he should come up and start me one and was surprised to see I already had one going. That was about two hours after I started it

Looks pretty much like we were posting at the same time last night Ruth. With your experience as a nurse you know all the frailties of being a patient- and how folks tend to hear only some of what is told them. And then there are some individuals who do not ask questions-they go with the minimum of information because they do not want to understand. We went through that with my sister in law. Neither Dh nor I could understand how little they wanted to know about her disease....everyone is different for sure. Just glad her lymphoma is cured or in remission. Also nice that you are in contact with her. Glad your fire ended up burning well- such a pain when a fire needs to be nursed for a long time. Guess it took those 2 hours of work to make a good fire. How often do you have to add more wood?
DD just left.....we went for a walk, a cold walk but a nice one. Then went through pictures of baby quilts, looking for fabric color schemes. I took a picture of several and have a good idea of what she is looking for for the baby quilt, as far as fabric selection. That might be my crafting today....not sure. Think I am going to make some muffins- got some pancake mix that I can use to make banana chocolate chip muffins...want to use it up. I do not make pancakes often- so I will give this recipe a try to see how it turns out Ginny

good afternoon crafters, sorry about the young man and the cousin. I learned yesterday a first cousin through marriage passed away.
I have not seen him in years.. I was trying to figure out how many first cousins I have left. think about 18 not counting the spouses..
CJ I love your colors. I think you will do ok with the techniques you will be learning.
as far as flannel MARY JO always told me to spry starch the flannel heavy says it is easier to work with.. I don't do much in flannels.
finally got the main floor (ranch style house) dusted, vacuumed, floors scrubbed and kitchen table cleaned off.,with Don's help.
maybe tomorrow I will get back to my playpen area. have one more flying geese block to do.
so far we have not gotten any of the snow we are suppose to get. phyl

Ginny, I'll be sure to buy the better quality of flannel if I ever decide to use it again. Thanks for the info. I hope your dd will be able to decide on what color scheme she wants. There are so many choices and beautiful colors and prints so it's not easy deciding on what you want.
Phyl, good to see you.I don't know how many cousins I have left but quite a few. There are some that I haven't heard about or from in years so don't know if they are still living or not. Others have facebook pages but of course you can have a fb page and designate that no one can find you in a search. I don't do anything on fb but my crochet groups and look at pictures my family posts. I don't keep post on ny newsfeed or on my page... I don't even know what some of those things on there are called, I do also search for people in my past...either family or friends, old coworkers, etc and sometimes find them and sometimes not.
I don't know exactly how long the intervals are between adding more wood. Much of ours are all different sizes and it also depends on various other factors so that's hard to say. The fire when it got going kept doing very well and warmed the upstairs very nicely. I would have made a fire today too but all the wood is now covered in snow. The snow we had yesterday morning had melted a lot but we got more during the night again and I think it's still snowing. It's cold too but in the 20's. It could be worse.I should have brought in some yesterday after the ice melted
Ok now back to crochet. See you all later

Phyl- sounds like you and Don got a lot of housecleaning done today!! Sometimes the act of cleaning off the kitchen table (which for many of us becomes a major dumping ground). Seems like the kitchen table ends up being where we put stuff that we donโt know where else to put....hope that tomorrow you can get some time in on that flying geese block. And i am very sorry to hear about the loss of your first cousin. My Dh always used to say that winters were hard and that more people passed this time of year than others...sure seems that way for our little group.
Ruth- I am so sorry that your wood became snow covered, making it difficult to burn. Simply amazing how tough it is to burn wet wood. Love the sound of your fire- making the upstairs nice and toasty and comfortable. Hope you can get your next load of wood inside before its too cold or gets snow covered. I had no idea that the quality of flannel mattered so much- I do know what they sell on Missouri Star is good for quilting. Might be a bit afraid to buy some from Joanns...but they do have good fabric from time to time. Did you get much crocheting done?
Dd and I had fun looking at color schemes...and I took pictures of several quilts that she liked the look of (for color scheme). I will have to see what they have at the quilt shop- what I can get in flannel.
Hope Cj has had a good day.

I wonder how Hobby Lobby's flannel is. They do have some very nice fabric. I don't know about the quality but the little bit that I have bought there seems very nice

When I was up at HL a week ago, my friend was looking at their flannel. It was not quilters flannel, and I did not see any. My friend had a piece of Missouri flannel with her (she was trying to match fabrics) and compared to what HL had. There seemed to be a difference- not sure if I would buy HLโs flannel for certain projects. I know my friend decided to hold on the purchase and see if she could find a better match. IMO - HL has some fabrics that are really good quality. What I picked up for falling charms is really good quality....and I know it will work out well with the other fabrics I have. Guess I took a lot of words to say that HL has some good fabric....Joanns too- but its my observation that you stand a greater chance of getting good quality quilting fabric at HL.
Got no crocheting in last night- so my crafting for yesterday was looking at pictures of baby quilts with Dd. Just waiting now for Jane to find out what her color scheme will be for her baby quilt and then its time to go shopping.
COLD here- think after church I will come home and crochet or cut the border for the falling charms quilt.
Hope everyone is staying warm....think we all have a dose of winter weather. G

Hello Everyone Ginny - That is so wonderful that flags were put out on the street of the solider's family, I know that had to be a emotional thing to see. Ruth - Hope you can get things worked out with the fire/firewood. Phyl - Hope you finished your flying geese unit. I finished the ones I needed for my quilt along. I liked the no-waste method of sewing them together but I had a bit of trouble with trimming until I figured out a method. We had a cold and windy day yesterday, I think it's cold today too. It looks like we might have rain and/or freezing rain Monday and into Tuesday. I hope it's just rain since ice is so damaging. I'm fortunate that I don't have to go anywhere. Last year I had wanted to make a table runner for each month of the year, but never did it. So yesterday I made one for January (picture is below). I'm going to sew some buttons on each end to secure the backing to the front section. I liked this bright snowman fabric but never could figure out how to use it. I still have a lot of it and maybe using it in a 3 yard quilt would work. Just FYI - I decided to time myself when I started sewing this table runner and it took me 15 minutes, not the 10 minutes it says, but still really quick I also finished making the 8 flying geese units for the quilt along (picture is below). I'm done now until Feb 5th when the next clue comes out. I think I would like making these in just 2 colors better since there would be less decisions about placement. But I still also like the traditional way to make these units. Finally, I made one of the blocks for the new quilt I'm working on. The pattern is called Norway and it's by Laundry Basket Quilts. I'll attach a picture of the quilt from the pattern and then a picture of my block. The quilt only needs 18 of these blocks alternated with a full block of the turquoise fabric. The cream fabric has small little baskets on it if you look closely to see them. I just loved this quilt when I first saw it so I ordered the exact fabrics to make it. Hope you all have a wonderful day and get some crafting done

Ginny, I missed the part of your message where you mentioned all the flags. What a wonderful thing to do to honor what sounds like a fine young man. His death is so tragic.
CJ, once again you have posted some very beautiful pictures for us. I love all of them and especially the one at the bottom of the page

Hey Ruth, how has your day been going?
CJ- you have been busy. The table runner is so cute- like most of us do you have a stash of buttons to use for the ends, like you mentioned? (Never added buttons, I always top stitched.). And I do remember that fabric when you mentioned you bought the exact fabric for the quilt. Its so pretty and transitions winter into spring for sure.. The fabric with the little baskets is so pretty- nice job on the block!!! After all those flying geese, you must want to fly away yourself. So pretty and colorful.
Gearing up for a full day of babysitting tomorrow. Gonna get some crocheting in while I put on the football game. G
