We are a group of like-minded people that gather to discuss a host of topics from weight loss, to current events. Our thread celebrates liberal diversity, welcomes new friends, and respects all opinions. We count everything from calories to points but, we never count our chickens before they've hatched!

Not sure what to say, so many thoughts running through my head. None of them are good, and all of them are frightening. Maybe after coffee I can somehow make them become coherent enough to put into sentences.
Do have one thing to say about people whose first thought about what happened last night is to celebrate, particularly when those people have themselves never spent even one moment in harms way and never will, I consider those people to be jackasses displaying what fools they truly are. That anyone would celebrate any act of war truly disgusts me.

Huff Post... Just 11 weeks into office, President Donald Trump has bombed Syria. The president announced Thursday that he had launched a missile strike on a Syrian air base in retaliation for a deadly chemical weapon attack perpetrated by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime. The chemical attack, carried out earlier this week, left at least 70 dead. In 2013, when a sarin nerve gas attack left more than 1,400 dead outside Damascus, President Barack Obama went to Congress to get approval to strike. In a whip count from ThinkProgress, 183 Republicans were against bombing the country. Only 12 Republicans, including then-House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), sided with the president to launch a strike. Ultimately, Congress did not appear to approve the strike, with 243 Congressional members swaying towards voting “No.” Obama ultimately decided to postpone the vote.

Do you think the "Bromance" between Fake Prez & Putin is over? Let the leaking begin on how much Tweety owes Russian for business loans etc. &. Interference in the election.
So, Jared Kushner lied about his Russian meetings when filing for Security Clearance. "Lock the whole damn family up!"
This whole family is straining the Secret Service as in man power & $$$ like never before. I'm sorry but our tax $$$ should not be used to protect Eric & Donnie Jr on all their business trips. They brag about how rich they are, let them fund their own security while lining their pockets at the taxpayers expense. This family has no class what so ever. Just tired of looking at their fake smiles & plastic made over faces.
I'm beyond irritated this morning that it's so easy to use 60 missles at the cost of god knows what, but by gosh, don't spend any $$$ on safe refuge camps in safe zones or allowing them into our country. It's easy to shed fake tears over " beautiful babies" & give the order to launch a missle strike, but doing the compassionate thing is abit too much for this idiotic President. UGH!

Still no words to adequately describe my thoughts about the Syrian airstrikes. Maybe that's because they are so confused within my mind.
Not knowing what intelligence sources know and/or don't know, it's hard to know what to think. No one wants to see innocent people die such horrible deaths as happened with the chemical weapons, but certainly I don't want to see us dragged into a devastating war with no plan for exit. And war should always be the absolute last resort. Certainly I don't trust either Tweety's ability or motivation in making such decisions. We've already seen that intelligence reports can get it horribly wrong, so really what do they know or not know for certain? So much that we don't know, and will likely be learning over the next days, weeks, months to come.
What we do know for sure is that the world is a very dangerous place, and we have an unstable mentally ill man at the helm. We know he has advisers such as Bannon around him that most certainly can not be trusted to look out for anything other than their own self interests. I hope that there are also some more rational people around him, who have experience and good judgment and that he will listen to those people.
I am frightened and saddened, and very angry when I read posts that celebrate an act of war for any reason whatsoever. People's lives are at stake, and there is never a good outcome for war. True, there may be times when it is a necessary evil but is always just that -- evil, and never something to be celebrated.

What I think is a more likely scenario is that Tweety is just trying to muddy the waters even more to keep the real Russian facts hidden. What better way to take the news off that? Cynical I know, but what I think. I don't know the real reason for the airstrikes, but not for one single moment do I believe it had anything whatsoever to do with compassion over the deaths of children. Certainly no compassion is displayed when they drown in the sea trying to get to safety. Certainly no compassion is displayed when they go to bed hungry every night here in our own country. No, I don't know the reason for this but I don't buy for a single second that it had anything to do with compassion or goodness. In 2016 Tweety proclaimed Sadam an opponent of terrorism when talking about the gassing of Kurds in their villages. Where was his compassion for those Kurdish children? www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/trump-says-saddam-hussein-was-an-opponent-of-terrorism-hes-wrong/

Good point, Joyce about the Syrian refugees. Totally agree!
Fake Prez Tweety has 8 Tweets on record saying President Obama SHOULD NOT bomb Syria, etc. back when 1400 Syrians were gassed! Look it up, Fake Prez supporters! So, this sudden show of his is just ridiculous. Tweety spews out of both sides of his mouth causing "whiplash" ...
I agree, total diversion for his corrupt ties to Putin & Russia. Just hope there are enough grow ups in DC to carry through on this investigation.

When will the US ever learn, that meddling in the Middle East is a no win situation!?!?! How many lives, how many wounded military personal, how many civilian casulties, how many $$$ wasted, how much more misery & unstable conditions the US leaves behind, is enough! We can't even take care of our mentally & physically wounded Vets from this Middle East wars. How shameful is that! Just makes me angry!

Gorsuch confirmed.
As for Syria - I have mixed feelings. I disagree with the way Tweety just charged forward without Congressional approval and it scares me to know this nut case is leading us into it.
Linda - I agree. How many maimed, damaged vets can this country handle, how many families need to grieve the deaths of their loved ones - and for the love of God how many more troops do we have to send there?

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed."
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Ike was a real Republican. A hero. A decent and thoughtful man. Those that call themselves Republican/Conservatives today are not woven from the same cloth. They're kind of a disgrace to his memory. To the memory of all those that served. Their thoughts and actions make them look like a bunch of cruel and devious thugs. They'd probably mock Ike's quote and call him a wimp. This isn't your parents Republican party anymore!

We are getting to one of these moments now that we all knew would come, when that clown car of incompetent catastrophe after catastrophe after catastrophe... when that clown car has pulled up to the scene of a real situation." - Rachel Maddow

Dan Rather
The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief. It is an awesome responsibility. Committing the use of force and American men and women in uniform is about as serious as it gets. But the truly great presidents understand that knowing when NOT to act is as important as knowing when to act. It is a whole lot easier starting wars than finishing them. And there are many historical examples of where a promise of limited engagement quickly metastasized into something much bigger. There is a tendency to rally around the flag, and a President who takes on a war footing can see a boost of support. It is often transitory. There are arguments to be made that President Assad in Syria has crossed a line that demands U.S. military interference. Whether this should have been a unilateral action is something we all must consider. Whether President Trump has a plan for what comes next must be debated. Whether there is a coherence to this missile strike fitting into a larger foreign policy strategy is a question that should give us all pause. The role of the press is to ask hard questions. There is ample evidence that this Administration needs to face deep scrutiny. The lies we have heard, the chaos in governance, and the looming questions about ties with Russia - itself a major player in Syria - demand that the press treat this latest action with healthy skepticism. Perhaps it was the right thing to do. Perhaps a strong and wise policy will emerge. But that judgement is still definitely hanging in the balance. The number of members of the press who have lauded the actions last night as "presidential" is concerning. War must never be considered a public relations operation. It is not a way for an Administration to gain a narrative. It is a step into a dangerous unknown and its full impact is impossible to predict, especially in the immediate wake of the first strike.

I think you have all said what pretty much needed to be said, let me add this tidbit of info: www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/taran-killam-confirms-trump-couldnt-read-at-snl_us_58e7974be4b05413bfe222ee?This goes along with him getting into a prestigious University through the back door (his brother pulled strings and gave a huge donation. Why he does not like to read or take Daily Briefings, why his books are ghost written, and why he has the vocabulary of a 5th grader, and maybe why he has such a short attention span. He is not stupid, just not Presidential Quality.
