Ginny, definitely that counts as crafting and it sounds like a fantastic thing to make. Now I'd be tempted to add that to my list but I think my list is long enough right now. My dil is a certified aroma therapist and made all kinds of things with essential oils, soaps, lotions, even lip balm sticks like chapstick but that was a couple years ago and she's stopped doing that for now at least. I don't know if she made air fresheners or not. The person I made the towel holder for is another friend from the ww board. She wanted hanging towels so she sent the towels to me and I crocheted tops and sent them back. The one I made last night is one of the rings that you put any towel thru. When I made her the other towels she wanted all white. I actually made this ring in a black and white and the dishcloths and potholder the same. It was the potholder that used to be made with thread and I used the heavier cotton so you're right....the towel is supposed to have the cotton yarn you see called for in the patterns and which I'm sure you used to finish your mother's towels. My mother never did any crafting or sewing. Her mother did sewing and cross stitch. I don't think she knitted or crocheted. I hope my friend doesn't see this.. , her surprise would be spoiled....I don't think she comes to this board anyway but I'm sure she'd still love the gift.

Ginny here's a link to the potholder I was referring to. It looks pretty nice in this picture but I remember seeing them when I was young and thinking how ugly they were. This pattern still says use "spool cotton" which is the light stuff. Mine are really pretty if I do say so myself. It was a challenge figuring out how they were saying to crochet in the front and back of the ring but I did it so that was one of my learning accomplishments for that year. We have a wonderful God who gives us such a great ability to learn new and interesting things even at my age. freevintagecrochet.com/free-potholder-patterns/spool164/petticoat-fever-potholderI almost forgot to put on the link Here's a picture of the towel ring lemonlaneblog.wordpress.com/pattern-place/basic-towel-ring/and Ginny, I jsut went and looked at the quilt blocks again and the one you mentioned is the same one that was one of my top two favorites.

Well here I am late as usual. The last time I tried to post I had a problem with the computer or web site so packed it in.
This morning I went to PT. I was so tired all day now I feel fine. I have been working on my b/blanket. When I was on UTube a couple of days ago I noticed how one person crocheted her ends in when she started a new color. So I have been doing that and it will look much better when my work is finished. The V stitch afghan is completely finished and it look pretty good. Now I have to think about a new project. I usually like to have another going just to keep me from getting bored. I will probably make another V stitch afghan and change the colors. I would like to make one for my DD and my other DGD so that will keep me busy and of course I will keep working on my b/blankets.
Ginny, I wonder if the mother with 2 developmentally disabled children was able to get respite care. Some states are better than others about offering services. I was able to get 16 hours respite care a month and when they first gave it to me I remember telling Janet's case worker that I didn't know what to do for 16 hours a month. But I soon got used to it and my DH and I could go out to dinner and a movie and I didn't have to take the 16 hours all a once. I was also able to get longer periods of respite care. One of Janet's teachers was licensed to do respite care in her home and she took Janet for 3 weeks and I went home to Ireland. I also was able to go on retreat with a group from church so the little breaks I got helped me from going mad. Though my DH loved DD he was not a lot of help with hands on care and it was left up to me.
Ginny, what a thoughtful gift for your friend. I am sure she loved it.
With regard to my DGDs my DH and I decided that we would take care of the and see that they had security and a home and that they were provided for just like other kids. DS was involved with them and took them on some god holidays like Disney Land & Disney world & Hawaii & lots of places. He took them to Ireland and England twice. I saw that they were involved in church and Sunday school.
Ruth, I used to print out a lot of patterns but I don't do that quite as much any more. I like looking a the Pinterest e-mails and save some of those mostly for the color combinations for future reference.
cj, I hope you enjoyed your class and came away with lots of new information that you can use.
I am sure Phyl is too busy to think of us and I hope she enjoys her vacation.
I have rambled on a lot tonight. sleep well.

Good afternoon! Meg, yay! The V stitch afghan is done! I totally agree, working in the ends as you go is much easier and spares the dread of doing at the end. Obviously you have figured it all out, as you are willing to take on another one or two... I cannot wait to hear what color scheme you pick out for each. And I guess that means you will have to go back into the craft store to get more yarn! . How many skeins did it take you to make this afghan. It's so good to hear that you have gotten a little bit of energy back. I know PT can be very tiring- as they make you do what you do not want to do but will help you in the long run . Do you feel that PT is helping you? I am not sure Mrs B (as I will call her) got respite care, but I do know that she moved within the county to another community because they had better services for her dear boys. She tried so hard and was truly dedicated to her sons. And the one that I knew well was a real sweetie. I enjoyed being his driver. BTW, it does indeed sound as though you and Dh were wonderful parents (grandparents too!) doing all that you could to enrich and nurture those in your family. Your family is (was) indeed blessed to have you and your Dh. Ruth, so do not give me too much credit! THose sachets took longer to assemble the components than they did to make. But she is appreciative of them (and I put one in my bus too, which now smells awfully nice!). I enjoyed looking at the towel toppers. The ones I make are different but accomplish the same goal. I forgot, but you had told me that your DDIL is a certified aromatherapist. (How cool is that!). She would laugh at my quick cheaply sachets, but they do get the job done. Back to the towel rings, I would never figure out that back to front thing- am lucky I got through the directions I have. At a craft fair I saw the cutest towel holder set. THey took dollar store dish towels, and matching dollar store square pot holders. The pot holders were sewn to the center of the dish towel (still folded in thirds lengthwise);, on the center of the pot holder. Then the pot holder, which has a little loop, was folder over to close on a button (that you sewed on later). this project takes 5 minutes of sewing on a machine, plus another 5 minutes to sew on a button! I did a crummy job describing it and will try to find pics. Of course you can use higher priced towels- and accomplish the same goal. I noticed that they used those from dollar tree- making it a very economical and useful gift. Went to work this am- but took the afternoon off to drive to Dd's college and bring back her big items. (Like the refrigerator). We are home now- I am enjoying the afternoon off. It's HOT. Yuck. I did embroider in the car on the way up, I am really liking how the pillowcase is coming out. CJ- cannot wait to hear about how you liked long arming! Phyl, enjoy the vacation! I have babbled enough. Well for now! Ha ha ha Ginny

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today. It was a long day yesterday and I was tired in the evening so I didn't get to post.
I did enjoy the class I didn't break the machine It was great and the shop owner did a great job of teaching my sister-in-law and I. I understood all she said and we got a lot of time to practice quilting on our quilt sandwiches. I do feel like I can go there now and rent the machine and quilt some of my tops, so I'm excited about that.
A few things I learned from the experience:
- A puffier batting is more difficult to quilt in some ways and it requires a lot less quilting because it seizes up the fabric and makes the quilt heavy and hard
(my sister-in-law had the puffy batting, mine was a normal thinner cotton)
- Stippling (which I really like) was kind of hard because it's difficult to not go back over the same lines you've quilted. I found that doing loops was a lot easier
- The quilt can be marked before you go there or marked some while on the frame so that it makes it easier to quilt a design you might want
- I tried quilting with a pantogram and it wasn't that easy, I don't think I'd use one of them until I was more experienced.
I'm going to try to set up an appointment to get back to the shop in the next few weeks to quilt one of my tops so that I can do it while it's still fresh in my mind.
Ginny - Those gifts for your friend sound nice, I'm sure she appreciated them. I'm glad you're getting some of your embroidery done.
Ruth - Those patterns you posted are nice, the towel ring is cute.
Meg - Hope you find a new project soon. I like to have several projects going at once too - so I don't get bored.
I don't think I'll be doing any quilting today. I enjoyed looking at the Blocks you liked for the Solstice quilt, I liked those too. The ones with only 2 or 3 colors appeal to me more. There's a new block out today, but it's another larger one so the 12 inch block I'll make won't look the same. I'll post the link in a few days when there are more pictures.
Take care everyone!
P.S. - Ginny you were posting when I was. I'm glad you made it home safely from getting your daughter back from college. It's really hot here too!

Ginny, it had slipped my mind that today was the day you were going to get your dd's heavier things from her college. I'm glad you got there and back safely and will be able to rest for the remainder of the day.I can imagine how happy you are to have your daughter home for the summer. And despite what you said, I still think those air fresheners are lovely gifts and I think my ddil would agree. She does a lot of simple or easier crafting and those air fresheners seem like something she would make to give her friends. I've never smelled the lemongrass fragrance you mentioned. I was thinking of getting some lavender essential oil but sometimes lavender can be a little overpowering. Since you liked the lemongrass I may have to try that one. I mostly do all the driving so I wouldn't be able to embroider or do any crafting while traveling plus the one time I did try I got a little carsick. It's always nice to hear that some people can work on their projects while traveling. When you mentioned gauze for those air fresheners did you mean the nylon net? And do you put the cotton balls in a little bag before putting them into the gauze net or just directly into it. And I imagine you let the cotton balls dry first? Those towels you mention sound very interesting and a great way to get the towel to hang. I'll definitely have to look into that..Speaking of using towels and potholders together, have you every made Kitchen angels? I think I mentioned them before in regard to people selling things so inexpensively at craft fairs that they probably didn't even make the money the materials cost. The first time I saw a kitchen angel was at such a craft fair where the woman was selling them for $5 apiece which wouldn't even pay for the towel, potholder, washcloth and ribbon needed to make one. I've made a few since then and have a whole box of (well it's a small box but a lot in it) of the necessities for making more. It's hard to find matching sets now of the towel, potholder, and washcloth. Meg, I, too hope the PT will help with the health issues you have. It is very tiring though I'm sure. And I sure agree with Ginny on your family being very fortunate to have you. I hope they appreciate all you've done and are still doing for them. I'm glad you found out how to do the ends of the yarn while crocheting. I've wanted for years to come to CA and show you how to do that . Now the shawl that I've been working on in between my other projects, I can't do that with and I don't look forward to weaving in all those ends. CJ, I'm glad you enjoyed the class and that you had a good instructor. This will add a new dimension to your quilting life.Because of you I'm still thinking of finding another class. I sure don't understand all the steps involved in making a complete quilt. Last night the only crafting I did was to make another washcloth to go with the towel holder set. I wanted to make a larger dishcloth that would make wiping off counter tops easier.I even wove the end in. Today I think I'll go back to working on the Cross Bible bookmark for ds and dgs. It's a large Cross that has ties so that you can use it for any size Bible and mark your page. The Cross part goes on the front of the Bible, ties come off the bottom, thru the pages and up and go thru loops on the top of the Cross and tie there. After that I may work on the shawl. Sometimes I feel a little guilty that I don't use my time better. I have a LOT of time to craft and I waste a lot of it. Meg mentioned wasting time too but Meg does way more than I do with a little boy to keep track of at times

It's quite hot and sunny today. I have stayed at home most of the day though I did a quick run to Wal Mart for a few items. got a new hand bag and bill fold for mothers day and I am in the process of clearing out my old ones. I just finished with the old bill fold and now I have to start on my old hand bag. I seem to collect so much junk receipts and stuff like that. I also seem to get a lot of cards and most of them I don't use.
this evening I will listen to a book and work on my b/blanket.
Ginny, I really have so much yarn that I probably won't need to go to the yarn store unless there is a color that I don't have. Eventually I would like to make an afghan using grey with a soft pink or blue but I want to use up as much of my yarn stash as I can.
Ruth, I don't think you waste your time you are always working on something for your family and you take care of your DH. Besides we older folk are supposed to take it easy and I am very good at that.
I think dinner is ready so I will go and see if it is something I can eat.
cj, have a good evening.

Good evening!
CJ, so glad that the long arm session went so well! Sounds like you learned a lot and are excited to put your new knowledge to use. I agree, it's easier to stipple with a less puffy batting., which is why I like warm and natural.. it's easy to work with. Practice practice practice with the stipple! You will master it in a few tries! Doesn't this hot weather stink?
Ruth, I just ordered more lemongrass oil from Walmart , along with some eucalyptus oil. Lemongrass is a strong lemon scent. I am not a big fan of lemon but my friend is. So I ordered it to replace my supply. What I do is sprinkle the oil on the cotton, then gather up the mesh around it and tie it a closed with ribbon. Super fast and easy.
I am heading to bed but will see if I can find a picture of the towel Topper first. I am sure I did a nightmare of a job describing it! Ha ha ha
Meg, hope you had a great day! Did you get the new afghan started?
Ginny

Hello everyone. I just lost my post again. Not that I had anything earth shattering to share.
Our temp will be about 85 today and it will reach 90 tomorrow.
Ruth it is hard to believe that you could be expecting snow. I should move in your direction as the summers are hot here.
Ginny, your air fresheners sound like a great idea and I might try to make one, When is the last day of school for you? The last day here is June 2. I used to have a few of those topper towels and I didn't make them. I think I bought them from a kid who was selling them.
I did not work on my b/blanket last evening as I watched a movie something I rarely do. Today I hope to be able to stay at home and be lazy and work on my b/blanket.
cj what are you up today?
Have a great day.

Ruth, I am heading out......this heat is AWFUL. Figure it will take me 3 days of driving! . And snow does not faze me one bit. I like the stuff. Meg, we are always happy to hear from you! I do think this little group has become so chummy that we would worry about you if you did not check in to say hello. Was it a good movie? I am hoping that you get your wish and can stay home and work on that baby blanket! The air fresheners were so easy. 5 minutes to craft. Wow, I ordered new essential oils from Walmart and they shipped already. Dh wants me to buy from Walmart instead of Amazon- he has political diffferrences with the CEO of Amazon and at least Walmart is a brick and mortar store. Yes, its hot here. Put the AC on so at least it will be civilized when I get home. Not looking forward to driving a hot school bus today. Gotta see if I can drag the web site over here for the towel toppers. For some reason on the IPAD I have difficulty doing that. Have an awesome day Ginny

Ginny. good for you. I don't know how to post pictures. I will have to get DGD to help me. I love the kitchen towels. I tops of the towels I had were crocheted. I don't have them any more. What is your temp today? I don't envy you having to sit in a hot bus. Take care.
