Richard Russo and Andre DuBois That sounds wonderful, Ann. I finished reading THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE in preparation for leading a discussion on the two film versions of the story. Enjoyed all three. My next book is THE PEOPLE WE KEEP by Allison Larkin Will also be skimming BORN A CRIME by Trevor Noah about his life. Born from parents of mixed races in South Africa during the time of apartheid, he actually was born a crime. Good book. I read it long enough ago that I do need to review it.

I just started AMERICAN PROMETHEUS, a biography of J Robert Oppenheimer, the man in charge of our development of the atom bomb. I liked the movie about him very much and was looking to read more. A friend in my film group highly recommended this one. Well-written and interesting so far.

I am reading Joe Hill ( one of Stephen Kings sons ) HEART SHAPED BOX. This was his first novel and my first time to read him.
A pulse-pounding, terrifying rollercoaster ride of a supernatural thriller—a remarkable debut novel from a blazing talent that will keep readers spellbound
Sooner or later, the dead catch up. . . .
Judas Coyne was a collector. The bizarre, the unusual, the grotesque: A cookbook for cannibals. A used hangman’s noose. A snuff film. Usually the objects were sent by the black-clad fans who made his metal band a legend and made him rich.
But this time, when his personal assistant told him there was a ghost for sale on the Internet, Jude didn’t think twice. But he should have. Of all the ghosts around him—the abusive father, the battered, resentful child Jude once was, the bandmates he betrayed, Anna, the suicidal girl he loved and dumped—this new one means to haunt him all the way to hell.
His new acquisition—delivered to his doorstep in a black heart-shaped box—is Anna’s vengeful stepdaddy. Martin Craddock swears he’s going to settle up with Jude for ruining his daughter’s life. Craddock is everywhere: on the other side of the bedroom door; in Jude’s restored vintage Mustang; outside his window, on his television screen. In his hand , a gleaming razorblade swinging from a chain.
And now the jaded rock star who’s seen it all, done it all, has never been so afraid. . . .

I interviewed Gigi Georges this weekend for my daughter's Maine author interview series. DD had parents' weekend so I filled in. Gigi was delightful Reminder that she is the author of Downeast which I'm sure I've raved about on this thread before. IT is the story of five girls who lived in a depressed area of Northern Maine, the mentors and townspeople who supported them through their hard times. Gigi has a group chat with all five girls and hopes to do an interview or write an essay to catch readers up with what they are doing.
I am reading 50 pages of Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingshover. It is a brutal book, but well written. I am also reading Cassidy Hutchinson's book, Enough. She is 27 years old and her courage in speaking out and writing this book is admirable. We've watched a lot of her interviews and think she is very moral and very impressive.

I enjoyed SLOW HORSES by Mick Herron. Sort of a John Le Carre clone, but with sly humor. He based his character Jackson Lamb on Reginald Hill's Dalziel of the Dalziel and Pascoe series. I have several of Hill's books; I may pick some up them up again.
I just finished the next in Herron's series, DEAD LIONS. It was an award winner and an improvement on the first one. I was sure Mr. Lani would like this series, but he found the plotting too complex. Oh well.

Has anyone read THE MEASURE by Nikki Erlick? This was recommended to me by a friend in my book club. I just started reading it and it is interesting.
Synopsis: Short strings, long strings, medium strings — every person over 21 receives one, delivered in strange containers that materialize out of nowhere. As the weeks go by and data is gathered, scientists declare the strings to be accurate in forecasting how long their recipients will live.

I live in an independent senior living complex - we have so many great opportunities here. One of the groups is "Diversity and Inclusion" resident run. We have formed a book group and the first book chosen was "Mad Honey" - Jody Picoult. I read it some time ago and it was not my favorite. I will reread for the book club. I read everything on my kindle and got the hard copy for the club - find I like reading on the Kindle much more.

I just finished THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE by Shirley Jackson. I heard this was a classic horror novel, but frankly, the only thing I found scary about it was the utter cluelesses of the characters. None of them seemed realistic to me. Why anyone would think this is a worthwhile read is beyond me.

Just received MAD HONEY the paper back so haven't read it yet. It was also coauthored by Jennifer Finney Boyle. Was it the plot you didn't like? It is a tough story line but very believable.

Demon Copperhead is a very tough read. I taught David Copperfield many years ago in my very early teaching days. It is an autobiographical novel. The similarities to Demon Copperhead are definitely there.
I continue to read Enough by Cassidy Hutchinson and am very impressed by her. She is only 27 and was high up in the support staff at the white house at the age of 23. She's very thoughtful, professional. She was the first person in her family to attend college.

I am finished with Heart Shaped Box! Whew what a ride. don't mind hauntings but boy this one was nightmare causing! Will be awhile before I even think about another Joe Hill novel.
I am starting James Patterson 23 1/2 Lies. It is a collection of 3 Stories , one a New Women's Murder Club. I like when he writes with Maxine Paetro Ready for some short stories.
Demon Copperfield is a very hard book to read. I got so frustrated with it. Glad I stuck with it though.
I am going to start THE RUNNING GRAVE by Robert Galbraith . Cormoran Strike Series as well. When I am finished I am always anxious for the next one but these are huge books so takes awhile both to read and also to wait for next one.

I really enjoyed this one, quite a bit more than the last. The scariest thing is how realistic the tactics the cult uses.
