Good morning everyone. It's still morning here and where Meg is.
Meg, I'll be making the cake today.Dh's bday is tomorrow so will get it made and he can start eating it early if he wants.
Didn't do any crafting yesterday. After shopping I did just a couple things and then pretty much wasted a lot of time.
I hope everyone has a great weekend
OH and another comment about that long or drop stitch which I think is the same as what they're calling a spike stitch now, I use that for hats too. It makes a really nice looking hat that's different. You can use the old basic hat pattern and come out with a hat that looks like you did a lot of work to make it but in actuality it's extremely easy.
My dh collect knives...pocket knife types ..so I'm making him pouches to protect the knives. They're really easy to make. They're pretty much like the patterns for chapstick holders you see on line but made larger to accomodate the knife size. They're also good for people that use electronic cigarettes. you can add a long chain and they can put it around their neck because many of the ecigarretes are quite large and too big for a pocket with the battery compartment and all so this way they don't lose track of the ecigarette.
Anyone make soap sacks? Making a soap sack is easy too and with a nice bar of handmade soap or other unique soap it makes a great little thank you gift.Even just plain old soap is nice in one.Rice bags make another great gift but if you knit or crochet one you still have to sew a little sack to put inside. A woman I know uses knee high stockings to hold the rice but it makes it lumpy and I'm always afraid of it melting in the microwave.I also use cotton yarn because acrylic or nylon or whatever can melt also. I made a rice bag and a couple nice washcloths and put in a nice bar of soap for a thank you gift for one of the ladies at my library because she was always so nice and helpful. She was esp thrilled with the rice bag because, unknown to me, she has arthritis in her hands and the heat really helps her hands feel better.

Good evening!
Prayers go out for the people in Charlottesville Va- and the families who lost loved ones.
Ruth, what a nice idea to make knife pouches for Dh. Fun and easy to sew, plus useful. My mom. (Using ultrasuede) used to make really nice crochet hook/ knitting needle holders. And using ultra suede made them sturdy too. Never made soap sacks, but have done rice sacks. What a simple idea for something so beneficial.
Very busy day.....we went shopping with Dd #2, then the other Dd came over with the kids. Spent the evening with friends....no crafting for me.
Hi to everyone I missed. See ya tomorrrow Ginny

Ginny, these were crocheted pouches but sewing some using ultrasuede is a great idea. Dh has a couple suede jackets he bought at a garage sale years and years ago. They weren't his size but he had planned to make things like knife sheaths with them using an awl. The soap sacks are crochet too, can hang on the shower head pipe and be used as an exfoliating item depending on what yarn you use or just as a washcloth with soap inside. The pouches are just large chapstick holders and I made them with a very narrow strap so they can hang around his neck if he likes.
Sounds like you had a nice day. I used to love shopping but not so much anymore.I used to go overboard shopping. I was on the verge of having a shopping addiction.
I measured all the cabbage patch dolls today so that even after I send them on to the dgds I will be able to make clothing for them. in sorting thru my patterns , which I may have already said here,I found several patterns for sewing cp kids clothing. Right now all are crocheted. I'm going to work on more this evening. It's only 9:15 and I'm a nightowl.
Have a good Sunday all and get a good sleep everyone.

Good afternoon!!!
When i was in the craft stores the other day I saw that they now sell yarn expressly for making scrubby dishcloths ( or soap sacks) from. Now all of you are probably howling, as this special yarn has probably been available for sale for years and I have just had my head in a paper bag. Anyway, Ruth's post from yesterday made me think of it.
While my mom was still here, we did look into a life alert type thing for her. She thought it was too expensive.....so I made her a pouch to wear her cell phone around her neck at all times. I was able to find her a cell phone with preprogrammed 911 (it was an extra large button) and also allowed me to program the police station on an extra large button too. Well, the night she fell (around 9 pm, while taking out the garbage) and broke her hip, the way she contacted me was using that very cell phone. I remember her telling me that she was so glad she was wearing it.
Meg, I ended up opening up this thread from the other day- and read about your saga with the CPAP and Ruth's response. My DSIL has COPD (stage 3 emphasema) and I know she keeps track of her O2 level with one of those finger things. they are not terribly expensive and are easy to use. Not sure where you live, but I would investigate calling your local senior office, or office of the aging , or perhaps your church- or even knit wit friends for assistance getting to appointments that Ds cannot take you to. Do you have a senior shuttle bus ? I do hope you are able to get the rides you need for your appointments.
Ruth, left to my own devices, I am a night owl too. Were you able to get much crocheting in last night?
Got to church this am, then Dh and I went to DD#1 house to move some construction supplies for him- he will be sheet rocking her walls in the kitchen next week. No crafting this weekend, but I am going to print out the directions for the afghan so that I can play with that tomorrow while I am waiting in the doctors office.
Lovely weather here. The humidity fell and there is a nice breeze.
Take care- hi to CJ and Phyl Ginny

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today
Meg – I’m glad to hear you are doing well. I hope things went well with your therapy and you were able to get your grocery shopping done. I'm sure you're enjoying your books too.
I bought a book called “Baking for Two” and I’ve used it to make a few of the recipes which make only 4-6 servings. I miss baking so I figured this would be good. I’ve made brownies and they were good, there are several cake type recipes in this too. When I make something I try to freeze half of it to eat later. I also bought a British baking book by Mary Berry and I’m going to try making a small Victoria Sponge cake soon.
Ruth – I’m happy to hear that you are feeling so much better. I agree with you about cutting all those squares and then having to sew them together. I try to find the easiest and quickest ways to do my quilting, since I don’t care that much about complete accuracy – I just want to enjoy the process. I’m always in awe of all the projects you tackle and the things you make, I sure hope everyone appreciates your efforts. Phyl – Hope you can get things worked out with your CPAP. I’m glad you are getting more work done on your cupcakes. I bet it was exciting to see that Paddleboat.
Ginny – Sounds like you have had a busy weekend doing things with family. I’m glad to hear your weather is better too. Hope you can get back to your crafting this coming week.
The quilt show was really nice, there were a lot of traditional style quilts that I like – and not as many modern quilts and art quilts which I can admire the work in, but don’t care for as much. I saw some quilts that I would paid for on the spot and taken home if they were for sale. We’ll definitely go back to this show again. It’s about an hour from my house and the area is beautiful, so it was really nice to get away from the traffic and congestion around where I live.
I managed not to buy too much either – just a few pieces of fabric and a holder for a 12 inch quilt block. I also bought a book on Feed Sacks. Over the years I’ve purchased many feed sacks, and pieces of feed sacks, at quilt show and I have quilt a few now. I want to make a quilt out of th

Ginny, your dd and sil are lucky to have you and your dh to help with everything.I hope you can have a very relaxing rest of the day. Its great that you were able to get your mother that cell phone with 911 programmed in and with the extra large buttons. It certainly was a blessing to have it when she fell. In the past I had many patients that fell and broke hips and had to lie there for days until someone checked and found them. It's a great idea to have the cell phone in a pouch because in a pocket it could fall out under many circumstances.I'm going to add a little flap with a button for dh's knife pouch that he will hang around his neck because he thought maybe under certain circumstance the pouch could slip sideways and the knife could fall out.
My dh has copd and we do have one of the pulse oximeters and yes, there are definitely some that are a great price and work well. The one we have was very inexpensive.
Phyl, I've never seen a paddleboat in person. I would love to see one. We were in Hannibal. Mo a few years back and I know they pass thru there but we didn't see any.
CJ, I'm glad you enjoyed both the quilt show and change in scenery. It's always nice to get out with someone that shares common interests and especially when it involves a hobby that you love. Many times when I'm making dh his carrot cake I make only half the recipe. This time I made the whole thing since it's his bday.I even ate a small piece and it was delicious. In the past carrot cake has always been a trigger to me and I ended up being on an eating binge. Not this time. The Victoria sponge cake sounds interesting but it sounds hard to make. I'm not sure because I've never made one.
Last night I started what the pattern designer calls a "fair isle" sweater for a cabbage patch doll. I also got all of the dolls measured and listed in my knitting and crocheting notebook and also listed the colors and stitch I used for each individual blanket I made for each one. I did that in case ddil especially likes on I will know what stitch it is so that I can make that for her for the new baby.
Ginny which afgan did you decide on that you're printing. I love looking at patterns. I want to try all of them. I just need to use my time more wisely
Meg, I bet Devin was excited to see some of his school friends again but I bet he's happy to have the weekend now when he can rest and regroup
Have a great day all.

Good afternoon! CJ- glad you enjoyed that quilt show so much....I figure our taste in quilts have a lot of similarities, as I tend to like traditional quilts also. Like you the art quilts and modern quilts just do not seem as pleasing to the eye. Mark your calendar for the next time that quilt show is there- is it an annual event or more frequent than that? Glad you found a nice baking book with smaller quantities. Its a challenge if you just want to make a small cake or a few muffins. Have you found a favorite recipe yet? And congrats on buying too much! Must have been had behaving yourself.
Ruth you are making me dizzy with everything you are doing. What a great idea organizing your cabbage patch projects so that you can keep track of who likes what. It will make your life much easier I am sure. If you change your mind, this is the week that I have Joanns coupons and would be happy to share the online code for 50% off....that way you could pick up that scrubby yarn!
We hiked this afternoon and I am tired. Oh, I printed out the cabbage patch stitch pattern and will give that a shot, If that does not work out I will use a pattern I saw on the bernat site that was very simple but elegant.
Hi to Meg and phyl, Ginny

Ginny, we haven't hiked in awhile. Used to do it all the time even after dh started having his joint, muscle and tendon pain, fatigue and breathing problems we would just hike slower and not too much of a grade anymore but this summer, which I promised we would do more again, has just been wasted because of my pain problem which is severely intense when I walk. Hopefully we'll be able to do some things after our company leaves in Sept. You never mention how you sleep but I'd bet you sleep well after all the exercise.
I went to Joanne's site. It was just too tempting to stay away. The good news is there's so many yarns that I would like to get that I can't make a choice. Is the 50% off for one item or the whole order? I love a lot of those yarns but I sure don't need anymore although I really do because last night I was looking for a pastel pink or other nice pastel and didn't find what I wanted in my room. I really just need to start making things with what I have. But they do keep coming out with such nice yarns. I would like to get some of the refective too. I'm not sure why. And I would like to get scrubby but I just think I need to not buy anymore right now. I do appreciate your offer to share the code. It's wonderful of you to offer and I feel bad not taking you up on it but.....well dh hasn't been in my craft room for awhile and went to put something in there yesterday and came out laughing about my "warehouse". He's right. I saw some other yarn I was tempted to get today too....Lion's modern baby.
I saw some on Joanne's that I have, called Enchanted. I have no idea of what to use that one for. I see they have baby coordinates. I always use that to make my baby bonnets that everyone loves. I should make a bunch of those and take them to the clinic so they can give them out this winter.I have plenty of that yarn though.
Well I did get one cupboard cleaned out and the one counter top that's over to the side and things...mostly dh's things keep getting piled on it. Tomorrow will be the stove drawer and another cupboard.
Earlier I finished the first "fair isle" sweater and started a second one.

Well I finally picked up my crochet hook and went to work last evening. I worked on the b/blanket I started ages ago and it is almost finished. I did work on it again this afternoon and I have been listening to an audio book which helps me to stick with it. Otherwise I have not done much today.
cj, everything went well with the therapist. She was really interested in my living situation and checked out my bathroom which I had remodeled a few years ago and had the hand grips installed so my bathroom was fine. She will not be back again. She suggested a couple of exercises and that was it. In the afternoon we got groceries and I used the electric cart. DS & DGD unloaded the car and put everything away when we got home.
Ruth, I hope you saved me some of that carrot cake. I bet it tasted good. I hope your DH had a happy b/day. You have so many projects going you make me feel lazy.
Ginny. I am going to get one of those things you put on your finger that Ruth mentioned. I checked on the internet and they come in a variety of prices. I usually carry my cell phone in my pants pocket just in case and there are numbers programed into it that I can call.
I am not buying any more yarn unless it is something I really need. I am going to make my DGD an afghan and I did buy some yarn at Hobby Lobby and I will need some more but apart from that no more yarn.
Now I am off to get ready for bed. sleep well everyone.

Meg, I don't know if you go back and read the old thread after Monday's new one is started or not but I still wanted to say that I'm glad to see you and hear that you're sounding much better. I'm thinking of putting hand grips in my bathroom too. my dh mentioned that he gets and off balance/dizzy feeling sometimes when he's in the shower and I have that too so I think a bar in there to hold onto would be a good idea. I'm not sure where we bought our pulse oximeter. Sometimes things are less expensive on Amazon and sometimes they aren't. Often you can get those medical devices somewhere else for less money. I told my dh that you needed a piece of carrot cake. He said to tell you to come right over.He said this one is especially good... that was probably because he hasn't had one in awhile since we've been trying to eat healthier although he told the diabetic educator that this is healthy cake because it has carrots, raisins, nuts, eggs, etc...sure and it's loaded with fat and sugar..she didn't fall for what he said of course
