Good afternoon- well its almost afternoon here!!
CJ- glad that you have had some nice weather to relax in. Sunny means no rain - therefore you are not worrying about your roof. (Hope you hear from the roofer soon!!!) I used to attend WW meetings- and at that time had an awesome leader, her name was Laura. I will never ever forget Laura, such a sweet and vivacious woman- but I well remember her telling me that this was a life long struggle FOR HER too! While that does not make things easier, it does make me feel better, knowing I am in good company in this struggle.
Ruth- well so glad to hear that the nasty freezer is all cleaned out and that your kitchen is back to normal. Got a funny freezer story if you will....it will be 3 years next month since my mom passed. 3 years ago, really starting in January (my mom’s cancer had not been diagnosed yet) Dh and I realized that she would be in assisted living at the very least until she passed- she would never return home. So (I had POA - and actually told mom that we were starting to clean up the house a bit to ready it for eventual sale. Anyway, mom had 2 freezers in her garage- both jam packed with food......the earliest date I found was 1998 (and the current year was 2015). Needless to say we threw a lot of food out.
Busy am- drove this am and then had to take our oldest cat to the vet for his annual shots. He goes outside during the day so I feel its important to have him up to date on rabies ....and the other shots he needs. Wow was that vet bill pricey.

Good morning all and yes a new week is again here. I was just thinking Saturday that it was almost a new one again
Yes this freezer does build up a lot of ice. We didn't end up having any food THAT old... smiling at your mom's two freezers full and the age of some of that food. Some people just feel more secure having things stocked up and some can't resist a sale even though they don't need whatever it is that's being sold and with just one person it would certainly build up. If dh predeceases me, when I feel an urge to shop or buy things on sale, I'm going to immediately take them to the rescue mission or the safe house. Anyway after getting rid of all the ice and the few things that were old or uneeded like the hot dogs, we have a lot of room and Im not going to let the pack rat fill it.At least it was clean under the ice but of course I washed it all out anyway.
As expected, today is not as nice as yesterday but it's ok. It's not snowing or blowing so that in itself is a plus.
I did do the seams and weaving in on the last pair of fgs and I did five rows on the baby blanket. I was so tempted to tear it all out because I don't like the colors. But because I'm going to donate it and because I have so much of it done I'll continue. Someone will like it I'm sure. Now I'm going to get together the colors of yarn each of the grands requested and start some more fgs. There are six of them that requested them and I want to make each at least two pairs then I do want to make a pair for my ds and the oldest of those grands which is 19 year old dgs. They could use some for doing things outdoors such as work on vehicles or use their phones without having to take gloves off. I've been thinking of fgs with that cap that goes over the fingers but with those kind the thumb is always covered and I think the thumb is what people use to text. I'm not sure as I don't text but I think I've heard that.
Well have a great day all. See you later

good monday afternoon, I am doing laundry and cleaning the house today. will be on the go around here for the next 3 days.
talked to my friend ginger and she was telling me about a quilt she is working on. forget how many blocks she needs to make. it is big. her sister is doing a table runner in it and only needs 5 blocks .ginger says it is fun to make.
so I google it. midnight in the garden with friends-modern Dresden quilt pattern. icandyfiberart. looks like a lot of work to me.
I have so much of my own stuff to do.
ok time to get back to work. phyl

Ruth, I never expected that you would have any prehistoric food like my mom did.!! Sounds like you will be very busy with all those fg.
Phyl- I will check out that quilt, which sounds pretty but a ton of work. A friend of mine just emailed me a quilt that is all english paper pieced and has something like 30,000 pieces....how insane is that! Like you- I have so much of my own stuff to do...and will never take on a project that huge.
Have a good night all G

Phyl, Yes I bet that quilt is beautiful but to go to all that work is another thing entirely.
Ginny, no I didn't think that you would think we had food that old. My dh eats a lot so keeps most things taken care of but some of those hotdogs were from2014 so still pretty old.
I started a fingerless glove pattern I tried a couple weeks ago. Once I figured out where the typos were it's going ok and I have one done. It's a crochet cable pattern. The huge problem is that now I don't think I have enough to finish the second glove to I may have to change it in some way. I thought maybe I could order another skein but no, of course, it's discontinued so probably what I'll do if I truly don't have enough is to make the section above the thumb a different color meaning I'll have to rip some of the already completed glove out to accomodate the changes. Pattern designer used simply soft. I should have check before I started to see how much yardage simply soft had and then compared it to this which is Vanna's choice baby yarn...same worsted weight but less yardage to each skein.
weather here is deteriorating fast. Looks like some snow is on the way.

Well I'm very thankful that I actually did have enough yarn. I finished the gloves except for the seams and weaving in which I might do tonight yet...after a tea break.. or might wait till tomorrow. So I'm working down the list. This is the first pair for the second dgd in my ds' family. I do have one each for two of the younger girls, one for the 4 year old and one for the oldest. I have a couple extras that aren't the colors anyone requested but when they get there I'm sure someone is going to like them. Basically I have six more pairs to make for the girls and little boy then at least two for ds and dgs. Maybe I'll make them each two pairs too I have a nice mitten pattern that I just cut out of an old crafting magazine that actually belonged to ddil's mother and when her mother died she gave me her mothers crocheting things and yarns including those magazines. The mittens are penguins and I think the little grandson will like them and I'll maybe make a pink penguin pair for the youngest girl too.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today phyl - Wow that quilt looks difficult. I've always wanted to make a Dresden Fan quilt, but I like the traditional ones. Ginny - That's a funny story finding food dated back to 1998!! I try to be good about watching the expiration dates on my foods nowadays because I found I was wasting so much food and hated doing that. Ruth - Your projects sound so fun and interesting, I'm sure everyone enjoys those gloves when they get them. Hope your weather didn't get too bad. Meg - Hope you are doing well and getting in some crafting or maybe listening to a good book. We're going to get some rain here today, tonight and some tomorrow. I already have my plastic tarps and buckets out in the room where the ceiling leaks. I'm hoping this rain will be more steady than heavy and I won't get much, if any, leaking. The heavy rain it what seems to get under the tarps and cause the problems. I've figured out that some of the reason for my overeating is related to my stress with the roof. I just can't concentrate on keeping my eating on track when I think about the house problems. I am still keeping up with a lot of my healthy habits so I know I'll get back on track soon. It's the same problem with my crafting, I just can't seem to work on things, even though I'd love to. I was happy to hear about the new Royal baby yesterday. I've always enjoyed following the Royal family and keeping up with what they are doing. I'm looking forward to watching Prince Harry's wedding next month too. Take care everyone!

Someone please tell me to STOP looking at crochet patterns!!!!!! They are all so pretty. Yes, CJ - I too am happy about the birth of the new Prince in England. Will enjoy the wedding too.....so glad you figured out why you were stress eating, so you will be able to conquer this again- yes you will!!!! Ruth - no no no.....did you get more snow? Glad you had enough yarn for the fg and are working down the list. Gotta be brief- I have to drop off a card and a plant to a friend from church- her mom had a major stroke and is not expected to survive. (Age 98). BBL Ginny

Good morning CJ, yes worrying about home maintenance and repair can be a huge stressor and most of us do handle stress by eating. Food is comforting. For now just do the best you can. I didn't even realize that the royal baby was due this soon and even though I knew the wedding was in May it seemed like a long way away and is hard to believe that it's almost that time. Ginny, your message popped up while I was typing. No thankfully we didn't get any snow. It is cold though.only 38 degrees but 70 tomorrow and 78 on Saturday. I'm sorry to hear of the imminent death of your friend's mom. It's hard to lose someone we love even if we know we'll see them again one day and even when they are very up in age. It's truly a blessing to have our parent so long. And why would I stop you from looking at patterns when I look at some almost if not every single day myself . Its part of our hobby...collect patterns, collect yarn.

Well, I am back and perhaps a bit more sane than earlier. My friends mom has alzheimers, and she has been caring for her mom at home. I view this stroke as a blessing as it saves her the agony and expense of what to do with her mom when she is no longer able to care for her at home. Her mom is a believer and according to Pastor, was ready to go home years ago if the Lord called her. Before I went to work this afternoon I left a plant and a card on her front stoop...just to let her know I was praying for her.
So, me and my dumb ideas. Now I am searching for a sewing machine! Not for myself for my gf who would love to have one. Her birthday is soon and I am trying to see if I can sucker her adult kids into helping me buy one for her. We are looking at less expensive machines. So far I have her daughter on board to help....and I am confident I will be able to get cooperation from her son also.
Thanks Ruth for justifying my insanity. I saw some darling patterns on all free crochet....and of course I envision myself making them all. Must be delusional as i can barely figure out an easy crochet afghan pattern.
Hope everyone has had a great day G

Ginny, my mother died at 80 and she had dementia due to strokes caused by a long history of mostly untreated hypertension. She was as bad as I am at taking meds and she also didn't want to take them because of the cost back when she was younger and before the first stroke that happened when she was only 38.. My parents could definietly have afforded the pills. Anyway it was a blessing that she passed when she did. As with your friend's mom she was ready to go as she had told me a couple years before.
I'm sure, Ginny, that you would do very well with the patterns for the things you like. Now finding the time might be a real problem but I know for sure you could easily figure out a pattern...even those like the one I was following yesterday which obvioulsy was never reviewed for typos which affected the number of stitches it said you were supposed to make.
The penguin mittens I mentioned last evening are actually supposed to be made with sport weight yarn. I have a hard time seeing how mittens made with that thin yarn would be warm enough for mittens so I tried it with ww yarn and of course they were too big....as in they were even too big for me. I didnt know exactly how to make them smaller because it seemed like it would be complicated but once I tried them I realized what was going on with the pattern and now know what to do. Mine need a couple more tweaks to get it where it should be but at least I know now what those will be so I'll continue to work on them this evening.
Also that is so very sweet and thoughful of you to work on getting your friend a new sewing machine both with contributing to the cost and getting her children involved in helping with the purchase. Your friend will be thrilled Im sure.
I looked at some of those patterns myself today. I couldn't open all the "mystery" ones because my computer will allow me to open just so many then it gets stubborn. I have to go out of everything and wait and go back so mostly I never get to see them all.

Good morning!!
Ruth, those penguin mittens sound adorable. With regard to the yarn gauge and warmth, I would think that a really dense crochet would hold heat better....or perhaps switching to woolease- a part wool yarn that is pretty soft. My other idea is to find another pattern, but you have put so much energy into this pattern. Again, I know you will figure it all out and come up with something that is adorable, but not too tough to make.
Regarding all those nice patterns I see online, well I am tempted to try a garment, but do not want to put all the energy into a garment to find out that I do not like the fit. My DSIL - the crochet wizard, has made several sweaters for herself, but she is very thin and can pull them off.
I am going to go to the LQS to see if she will help me with a deal on an inexpensive machine for my friend. My friend has long hinted (not really hinting, she has outright told me)that she wants her own machine- and I have helped her make 2 quilts.
Little kiddies have a half day today- I have to return to work soon. Have a good day G

Ginny, thanks for mentioning wool ease. Now that I have discovered how this pattern works I don't need the pattern at all. Its actually just a mitten with the embellishments to make it look like a penguin after the mitten is made. But you're right, wool ease would work well and I do have a lot of it. I could even just use the idea on a pair of fingerless. But I'm glad I tried this mitten. It taught me a lot...all in one day Forgot to mention that while I was at the Good will last week I saw a sign for a local quilt store. I wonder if it's actually open. I have to look into that. Although it is on the other side of town too. But I do want to check to see if they have classes. Great idea too to go to the one near you and see if they will help. I've seen really nice sweater patterns on that site too and have also been tempted.I've made baby sweaters and that one last year that fit 13 year old dgd who is tiny for her age. Never have made an adult sweater CJ, Meg and Phyl, please all have a good day also Nice and warm today here. I need to go out and pick up clumps of dirt made by the snowplows....the dreaded yardwork that takes us away from what we really want to do

I went ahead and finished the first mitten and if I do say so myself, it's great. It's a little firm though from using the ww yarn. I'll make the second one and do some embellishments of some kind then add it to donate shelf. This pattern that is my final revision of the original is nice and easy and is perfect for mittens. It's also perfect for those times when you have a few minutes on your hands and you can pick this up and make a pair of mittens in a short time. Im going to make a whole bunch of these for the church that gives away winter clothing in the fall. My goal is at least 20 pairs. Thanks to a friend I have a LOT of wool ease that will be perfect. So whenever I get a few minutes, instead of wasting it on useless activities this is what Im going to do....in between all my other projects that take more time. It also doesn't take all that much yarn so many can be made with the yarn I have. I could say that I'll make hats to go with them but I do sometimes get carried away so I'll just say its a possibility but many people make and donate hats...not many make mittens and we have a huge need here where the winters are bad and there are a lot of people that are poor for one reason or another.
A lot of mitten patterns have an ugly looking thumb that looks like it's just been plopped onto the side and looks like a "sore thumb". The way this one is made it looks like it's made right in with the body of the mitten (which it is) and looks like it really belongs.
