How come you won't eat US grown cucumbers pickled in India?

A lot of canned and jarred shelf stable products are packed in developing countries like the Philippines and Thailand. You'd have to start canning or pickling yourself or buy a local pricey brand.

I've gone out with a week's shopping list early on a Sunday morning and ended up spending 3 or 4 hours and visiting 5 grocery stores to fill the list. Wow, that's pretty extreme. I sometimes go to 2 stores because there are things on sale that I want, but usually I can find everything I need in one stop. I am never looking for anything too exotic though. This morning's grocery shopping gave me a great annoyance. I went to Meijer (which is a grocery chain mostly in the midwest). At checkout their bags are on a little carousel so that the cashier does the bagging as they ring stuff up - so there isn't an area down at the end where all of the stuff goes and is then bagged. The guy in front of me decided to bag his own, so the cashier had to literally hand him each item so he could put it in the bag, which definitely took longer. Whatever, I know some people are really picky about how groceries are bagged so I tried not to let this bug me too much. But then this asshole says "you're too slow for me!" to the cashier! Oh my god I wanted to punch him. He laughed and you could tell he thought he was making a cute little joke, but the cashier clearly did not think it was funny and he sort of grumbled "why don't you get back here and see how fast you do it." The guy's wife was embarrassed I could tell. Anyway, that is today's shopping annoyance!

WC, that is very annoying!
i never think to go to multiple grocery stores, least of all 5 in one day!! if they don't have a particular item i wanted (nothing is really a NEED to have that they may be out of, since they have all staples at all times), i just forget about it and get it next time. i eat really basic stuff though and just buy exotic things if i see it in the store and it looks neat at the time. rarely am i on a hunt for particulars of anything. and most of the time i think of the grocery store trip when i'm at the least amount of time left to do it. so my preference is to run in and run out and typically in the evenings (which means i'm more pressed for time because girls and i need to get home to get them ready for bed). i am lucky though in that my grocery store in calabasas is rarely crowded. the cashiers i've chatted with say most of the people in that area don't do their own grocery shopping so they send their domestic workers to do it for them, and most of the time that is during the day. i typically only have to wait in line behind one person, if at all.

finreporter, It's probably cheaper for the store to ship cucumbers to India for processing but I don't like it. Sort of like out sourcing IT departments and call centers to India. I like to find food locally sourced, if at all possible. Also, I have tried this brand of pickles and while they are cheaper than the big name pickles they have no flavor at all. So, I don't think this will help their bottom line when people won't buy them. Plus, I've read some things (may not be true, who knows?) that conditions may not be very sanitary or safe in some countries. I also only buy seafood from the US or Canada. The fish guy at my local store assures me that shrimp from Argentina is very safe and delicious but I haven't bought any yet.

it's not so much the store shipping the cucumbers. the store is just the retailer selling product to the consumer. the manufacturer of the outsourced pickle packaging is likely whichever company owns vlasic. they source the cucumbers and then send to a co-packer in india to process and label with the retailer's label ("private label"). i'm not sure of the conditions of the pickling plant but the US has such strict laws with food safety that i would not imagine the pickles are dirty or unsanitary just because they were boiled to death and salted in india. they are pickles after all! the tainted romaine came from arizona so it doesn't sound like the US is the place with the cleanest food either!
one of the companies i used to work for canned mandarin oranges that came from china and their customer service line had complaints about not wanting product that was from china. understandable, but this is a global economy and global marketplace. they did listen though, and started trying to source the oranges from other places to appease the customers that had taken issue with it.

One of our members who hasn't been around in a while is Indian. She complaines all the time about how hard it is to stay on program with an active social life because partying to Indians means deep-frying everything. She was once asked why they do so much deep fried food; her response was, "If you saw how dirty everything in India is you'd understand that deep-frying food is almost a requirement!" Air conditioner fan not blowing Linda, time to head for the lobby bar in your best local hotel's air-conditioned lobby!

housemouse- sorry to hear about your home troubles. Unfortunately I have no suggestions.
My DH is an excellent handyman and is able to fix almost all our problems. We only have a window air conditioner and it's 19 years old now because he does a cleaning, oiling and repair every year.
Don't know much about sump pumps either.
Good luck

I am really close to several friends from india. I feel like they'd be really offended if I called their food "dirty"! We eat out at Indian restaurants frequently and not much of it is fried except for what I'm ordering! Samosas.

Unfortunately my local large grocery store closed a few years ago. Now I have to walk 1 mile to the nearest one that is half the size of the one that closed. That's why I get most of my stuff at Trader Joe's which is near my gym. Though I can't get a lot at one time as I take the subway to the gym. And I have quite a walk to to the subway. On the plus side, I do get a lot of Fitbit steps.

Living in NYC seems to be a great way to get steps in! No being lazy in that city! I get a lot a lot of steps when I go there and when I go to Las Vegas.

Why all the distaste for India? If it's from Germany it's ok though?
