Good morning and Happy New Years Eve!
CJ- a big congrats on getting the quilt top of the solstice quilt done! I knew you would do it....when you lock in on getting a quilting project going its usually with great resolve and you accomplish much. For the other quilt, it sounds like another trip to Joanns or a quilt shop is in order to select the additional border. Please accept my sincere condolences, as going to a fabric store must be a great hardship for you. ha ha ha. Yes, I have the same experience, buying fabric at a high priced quilt shop is not always a gurarantee of fabric that does not fray....and some fabric at Joanns is excellent quality too.
Sue, teal is a popular color- but also a really lovely color. (It was my mom’s favorite!). The scarf sounds so nice. I am very happy for you that the attorney and clerk did such a good job assisting with the probate of your Ds will. During a difficult time and experience, its a comfort if you can rely on the professionals hired to help you.
Ruth, there is a chance I am at Walmart today and if so will check out simply soft. 40 years ago, Caron had a lovely yarn that also had a sheen ( the pharmaeceutical company I worked for also owned Caron and they sold some of their yarn for great prices in the company store). Cannot remember the name, but it was also soft....had a bit of a sheen to it....but the fibres tended to stick which made it awkward to work with at times. For the potholders, I have been using insulbright, and regular batting...I suppose I could just try one with the insulbright and see how it goes. The directions I saw on youtube mentioned using the double layer of batting so it would be extra thick. Tried getting a little further with the tooth fairy pillow, and it works up quickly and well. Hope that this new year is one of good eating habis for you and a commitment to maintaining your health!
I have done some slipping up with regard to watching what I eat, and must get my momentum back for staying on program. The only reason I have not ballooned up horrifically is that I usually get my activity in. It will be great when all the sweets and goodies from the holidays are out of the house and I can focus on healthy food choices When I started joining these threads, back in the old days of WW threads I enjoyed them because they were mulitpurpose... on a day when I was doing fine and felt no need to chat about my eating habits I would just chat about crafting. That is probably what I will do here...as I am trying to restrict my online time a bit.
We were at a friends house last night watching what ended up being multiple football games. Pretty exciting day....most of the teams I care about (with the exception of one) did well. It was fun sharing the evening with them.
Off to get started on my morning.....Happy New Years Eve all....doubt we will be doing much to celebrate today- which is the norm for us. Ginny

Nine degrees, and there's a snowdrift across the driveway. I'm going to call and reschedule my chiropractor appointment. I'll wait for the snow man to dig us out.
Grocery shopping can wait until Wednesday when it's warmer.
We have no plans for tonight. It's been years since I've been out on anew Year's Eve. I don't think I could stay awake until midnight!

Sue, the only way I would be awake at midnight would be if something woke me up or I had to use the bathroom!! How much snow did you get?

Happy New Year all. Yes I know it's only NYE but I like to start early. It's three degrees here, feels like -16 and snowed a lot in the night and still snowing. It's to get down to -10 during the night tonight.I need to be visiting my ds. In his area code today's high is going to be 64.
I forgot what the product was called Ginny. Insulbright sounds like what I have also. I'm glad the tooth fairly pillow is working for you and I hope the potholders work also. Yes I feel for poor CJ having to go to a quilt store...that would be like me going to HL...we'd both love the trip. Simply soft is soft so that may be what that yarn was. You may really like it. They have a new yarn now which is supposed to but extremely soft and nice to work with called PantoneX. It's a skein made up of sections of I think five colors which I think they said are not attached to each other. It's very expensive I've heard and most people that have bought it said that although the company says one skein is enough to make a shouchy hat that there really is not enough. I don't know if they sell it at WAlmart or not but from what's been said in the various crochet groups I won't be buying any.
I always used to work on NYE then would rush home to celebrate it with family. My mother and sister back when my mother was alive and all the kids in the family were young, used to have a NYE at her house with everyone playing board games and eating treats. My dh and kids would go over and I would meet them there after I got off work at 11 so that we could all be together when the ball fell. It's been over 45 years since we did anything like going out on that evening other than to her home.My dd did for awhile try to keep that tradition alive with her family.Maybe they'll do it this year because we bought dgs some board games for Christmas and he seemed to like them. It was my dh's idea and I really didn't think that dgs would like them. He's 13 and has always been into video games.
I'm always up at midnight so will be up tonight too but, since we live in mountain time the ball dropping on tv happens at 10pm.

I'm guessing we got a foot of snow, but it may have been more. Across the driveway there is a drift that is about two feet high. We don't usually have wind when it's snowing, so this is atypical. There's close to 18" on the back deck, but a lot of that came down from the roof, courtesy of the wind.

Same here Sue and I was thinking that earlier that usually when it snows we don't have wind. The wind comes the next day or two and blows the snow so hard that it looks like a blizzard when it's not even snowing. I think you have that there too. Back in WNY is was mostly always winding while actually snowing and causing real blizzards. Even though these are not real blizzards they are as much as a hazard since they cause poor or no visibility

Gee, that snow in WNY sounds like lake effect- where the wind becomes a factor in why there is so much snow. Ds went to school at SUNY Oswego, which is one of those prime lake effect locations. Ds used to call us when they got a lot of snow, and send pictures... surely a ton more snow than we usually got down state.
Sue, glad you can stay in....when does your respite care worker return? Will he be able to find the house in all the snow? Ha ha ha
Ruth, never heard of or saw pantonex. Sounds like a pain in the neck however, and who needs a yarn that simply does not perform as it is supposed to! We did go into walmart, and for a minute I got to check out simply soft. Yes, it sure does seem thinner than other worsted weight yarns, and pretty soft. But we all know what that means...its a problem if it tangles or just does not perform well. I am not into pricey yarn- and usually only buy yarn if its not full price. Downtown we used to have a small yarn store and all she sold was the high end yarns- of course very pricey. Everytime I went in the store I mused that for that one skein of $15 yarn, I could get 2 or three pound of love or super savers yarn. Guess I am too thrifty.
Think both our adult kids will be out tonight....Dh and I will be home. Just pray for everyones safety as this is a rough night to be out.
Happy New Years my friends....stay safe! Ginny

Hello Crafters - Happy New Year's Eve to you all We had rain again today and into this evening, my rain gauge shows almost 72 inches of rain this year - I heard them saying on the news tonight that 40 inches is average. There are a few areas in my yard that are so saturated that water is laying in them. Not too bad though. Ginny and Ruth - While it's always a pleasure to go to a quilt shop , I have decided I'm not doing anymore on that Solstice quilt. I'm glad it's out of sight, even though I do like it. Now I can think about some new projects, since I didn't want to start anything until that top was finished. The blogs on Kathy's Slow Stitch Sunday's website yesterday had some really nice pictures of all the quilts/projects they had finished over 2018. There were some beautiful pieces. I want to link one of the blogs below. This lady finished the beautiful counted cross stitch of the Golden Gate Bridge. I've been watching her progress for awhile now and I'm just amazed at how beautiful the final piece looks: cathiescraftworks.blogspot.com/ - It should be the first picture as you scroll down - click on the picture to enlarge it and really see all the stitches in it Hope everyone has a good evening. I never go out on New Year's Eve and I've never enjoyed alcohol (not that there's anything wrong with that ), so it's just another evening for me. I will probably be up at midnight because my sleep is really messed up. I have a lot of trouble getting to sleep and end up sleeping late in the mornings. I need to work on this. Take care everyone!

Hello Ginny, Ruth, Sue, cj & phyl, I have been staying home though not doing a lot. The sun is quite warm in the afternoon but it is cool in the shade. No snow here. Devin has been on the computer a lot even though he got a new tablet for Christmas. I seem to strain my eyes when I am on the computer so a lot of the time I find myself avoiding it. I have been working on a blanket I am making. When I started it, it was for DD but I may just donate it and start another one for her. I have been wanting to go to go to Hobby Lobby but keep putting it off. It is is a part of town where there is a lot of heavy traffic so I will try and go later this week. There is a big mall across the street from Hobby Lobby and on 2 nights this past week hundreds of young people gathered there and they were fighting and apparently they had lots of police all over the area. I think they were from different gangs and that's where they met up to fight. I haven't been in that mall for years.
I am not doing anything exciting tonight and haven't partied on NYs eve for years. When my DH was in the AF we would usually make a reservation at the club on base and celebrate there where we knew everyone. I don't know whether DGD is going out or not. She and her friend are taking Devin to Disney Land for a few days so they will be gone for a long weekend. So I will enjoy having the house to myself.
If you are all snowed in I hope you have lots of food and pots of crafting supplies on hand. I try to envision where you all live. Ruth you are the one I cant figure out where you are.
Now I am off to read or listen to a book. Have a good evening.

Meg, I live almost smack dab in the middle of wyoming... a little east of right in the middle actually. It sounds like a dangerous place to go...that mall. I hope you're safe going to HL. Is there someone you can take with you or can just take you there...Maybe your son?
I' sorry to hear that being on the computer strains your eyes because we really miss you since we don't see you often anymore. Has Devin been to Disneyland before? I'm sure he's happy to be going and yes it will be nice to have the house all to yourself. Yes we are well stocked up on everything we need but it actually didn't snow all that much here. I think we got maybe 3 inches here where I am just outside of town.
CJ it sure seems like you have received more rain than you need. I did think you said you weren't planning on doing anything more to the quilt top. It will be nice to start on something new.I liked looking at the quilts for which you posted links yesterday and I'll go see the one you mentioned to day.
I intend to spend NYE working on my grandson's hat. It's definitely time consuming.I'll probably finish my book too. It's a cozy mystery. The main character is a librarian. I do think I have only about two pages more to read though

HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS, we did go to church tonight, thought mass was 4.30 it started at 4.45. father had us out in 30 minutes.
it started snowing this afternoon, by the time we left for church it was hazy. drivers weren't to bad. most were taking it slow. then it was olive garden.we came out it stopped snowing. we were home by 7pm.
I went to the blog. boy she did get alot of items done this year. the bridge is beautiful.
is the solstice quilt compeletely done now?.
I am not trying to be perfect with Nathan's quilt, might sound like it. just notice alot of places could heave been done better.sometimes it is easier to start over then try to fix a spot here and there.
had my visit nutritionist and diabetic nurse. today.I always get a hug from nancy and sue. they are very happy with my weight and a1c.
nancy says I lose a couple of pounds a year then it tapers off and stays. I was about about a pound less last year.
we use to go dancing at he moose on n.y.e with about 3 other couples. then dean has his stroke and we seem to stop.would also have dinner there.
I made some pot holders. i f I remember right on the insulbright it does say to use batting with it for condensation.
carla who thought me this pattern when I told her that ,she thought it made sense because there seemed to be some wetness. I never did give them away. never used them thinking maybe I was afraid they would catch fire.
nita does fabric wrapped around rope to make bowls.she tells her buyers not to put the bowls in the micowave.she does not know what is in the middle of the rope, cord.
meg would computer glasses help phyl

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Quiet night for us, and i am very thankful that our 2 adult chilcrren who still live here arrived back home safely some time during the night. Been in contact with Dd #1- all 3 grandkids are sick. DGS is finally doing a little bit better, but he is on antibiotics for sinusitis. DGD#1 is now pretty sick. Dd thinks she will most likely not attend school all week.
Thanks for the heads up on using the insulbright. Yes, I will have to work on those pot holders. (For next year) and figure out how to make a binding work. Doing the finishting work on the tooth fairy pillow. Ruth - you are so right, its easy. Even I can do this.
Hope everyone has a great day. Ginny

Happy New Year! I feel like cold molasses this morning! The house is warm enough, but the temperature outside is -4 degrees. Tomorrow will be much better in the plus double digits.
The driveway and front steps have been cleared. The back deck has some areas cleared. The car ? I'll wait until the temp gets up to ten degrees. I have the final appointment for the permanent cap on the root canal. This has been a long process. Motivational, too. I'd rather not do this again, so I'm a lot more diligent about prevention. I'm fairly sure stress had a lot to do with all the dental work this past year, so learning how to relax has to be a big part of coping with what is going on.
Who knew? I really believed that retirement was all about having fun and relaxing. I guess it was for a short while!
bbl ... after I do something crafty or otherwise!

Good afternoon and happy New year to all. We had a quiet night too and Ginny, I'm thankful too that your children arrived home safely. We worry even about adult children. I'm sorry to hear the grandchildren are still sick.
When I woke up it was very cold but very sunny and little breeze. As the morning went on the wind became stronger and is really whipping that snow around. I did enjoy sitting in front of the large window getting some "rays"
I worked on dgs's hat but had to take a lot of it back out because the seam wasn't straight. I think I may be back on track now. Ginny the hardest thing for me on that tooth fairy pillow was putting on the face.
Meant to mention too that when you said you used inexpensive yarns well that's what I use too. Being that the things I've made are for children who's mother washes everything in the washer and dries it in the dryer I never sent anything that is not machine washable and dryable. I have bought some yarn that is a little toward the upper end yarn but it was on sale. I've bought alpaca to made dh hats and that nice yarn I just made him a hat with but again, on a huge sale.Otherwise the best yarn I've bought was that Barcelona from Michael's, made two of the Mountain Land scarves with them and gave them both as gifts.I've never bought really expensive yarn. I considered the alpaca expensive which to some probably is not considered expensive at all
