It's interesting that WW seems surprised that moving away from weight loss to wellness hasn't worked. What were they thinking? ?

Oh well.I guess that's what happens when you try to fix something that's not broken in the first place.

The Earnings Call Transcript made for an interesting read. Seems like a lot of double-speak. But there were interesting phrases that said what we've all observed for months... Our winter advertising did not drive consumers, particularly our former members, to action in the way we hoped. — No mention of how many long-time members they had who fled in the last quarter...that'd be an interesting statistic. Notable actions, we redesigned the new WW Freestyle spot with a voiceover from Oprah Winfrey reinforcing WW's new Weight Watchers. — So having marginalized Oprah's involvement for the better part of a year, they've decided, once again, that they need the "Oprah Aura" to boost membership. As we move forward, each of our global markets will apply the learnings from winter and take further steps to improve our marketing with the goal to make WW the first choice for consumers who want to lose weight and get healthier. — Oh, all of a sudden they want to speak to people about weight loss again. There was mention of the current Keto craze and its potential role in their recruitment/retention problems. There was also a question about plan changes/innovation for 2020 and a response that their science team has been working on this for over a year and that—if there is a change launched—it would be introduced prior to January 2020. Lots more interesting tidbits at the link.

The whole WW renaming and wellness wins was a dumb idea in the first place. A gamble, and it's tanking.
I know a lot of people doing Keto who are losing tons of weight and even feel better from chronic IBS and things like that. It's not for me, personally, but it's popular. I remember when WW was threatened by Atkins.

1. The whole WW renaming and wellness wins was a dumb idea in the first place. A gamble, and it's tanking. 2. know a lot of people doing Keto who are losing tons of weight and even feel better from chronic IBS and things like that. It's not for me, personally, but it's popular. I remember when WW was threatened by Atkins. 1. Agree, I wonder how long Mindy will last. 2. Historically extreme faddish diet plans aren't sustainable even if people are feeling better while on them, Keto IMO is a twist on Adkins and is on the tip of many tongues right now, but it's not a way of life, that I'd put money on. Years ago I followed the Scarsdale diet, it's high protein, low carb, it's 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, I blame it 100% for teaching me yoyo dieting.

The WW 4Q earnings report and CEO Mindy Grossman's earnings call report are out there in cyberspace; interesting reading, which I peruse into in greater depth later. seekingalpha.com/article/4244582-weight-watchers-international-inc-wtw-ceo-mindy-grossman-q4-2018-results-earnings-call?dr=1I got to page 4 out of 17, made my head spin, so many words to say the same thing over and over. Down here on the ground, it felt like too many changes and they were changes that felt like losses, stickers, paper towels, bravos, the name change, the brief turn from the importance of the number at the scale, the before and after pictures of the leaders, the leader names! (ugh) the receptionist names! Most small changes but each felt like a loss (ugh).... I need 3 things. 1. A plan I can follow without feeling tortured to do so. 2. Accountability at the scale. 3. A friendly group (including ww staff) for support. It all feels SO complicated now and in my mind it didn't have to be that way.

Oh well.I guess that's what happens when you try to fix something that's not broken in the first place. They did have to fix it though. They're just not fixing it in the right way. They could not go on being grandma's diet plan and having these old fashioned meetings at a center. They need to be innovative and find a way to capture members who want quick and easy and user friendly technology. But they don't want to pay for it. So they'll continue to go downhill.

I am an old lady who was successful in the 1970s with a very rigid plan but even I know this is 2019 and they are way behind the times. I can record everything on Lose It or MFP in the same time I could record two items on their app. Connect worked for me but I can certainly see how it didn't work for many. My girls and DDIL are all in their 30s. They are health and weight conscious and have no desire to join an old fashioned WW program. I am retired but with meetings cancelled etc. I could not justify a two hour time to drive to a center/studio/whatever stand in line to weigh, sit till it started and hear a canned dialogue from a leader/coach/whoever. My girls and DDIL all have busy careers and young children and would never have the time to spend as I did. The ladies of a certain age are all looking for WW to be the way it used to be. Someone on line was telling me the importance of bravo stickers. I suggested she go to a school supply store and buy herself a box of gold stars. It worked for the high school kids I taught

It worked for the high school kids I taught I came to the conclusion some months back that the flaw in Mindy’s strategy was trying to change Weight Watchers into something else. The demographics of the old vs. young age groups are just so different that there is very little common ground on which to build. My OPINION is that Mindy should have spawned a totally new company as a spinoff of Weight Watchers, given it its own identity and mission statement, and gone after the demographic of young, smartphone-addicted audience to build a unique offering for them while, at the same time, leaving Weight Watchers largely alone to serve the needs and desires of those who have always been faithful. So what if the Weight Watchers attendance dropped; close meetings and merge centers and keep doing that until it just isn’t feasible to keep that operation in existance, then shut it down and focus on the new business you’ve (hopefully) built during the same time.

This is another article. In this one Mindy blames the problems on bad marketing... "CEO Mindy Grossman told analysts Tuesday the company stands behind its strategy, blaming the results on a poorly executed marketing campaign. It's now turning to Winfrey to help turn things around. "If I was going to assess what the [problem] was, it wasn't granular enough," Grossman told analysts on a call Tuesday. "I think it needed to be more weight loss-focused, especially in the January season, and a more aggressive bridge from Weight Watchers to WW it needs to be more overt." Weight Watchers strayed too far from its core weight-loss mission too fast. Grossman assured analysts the company has already started massaging its message and will launch the new ad campaign with Winfrey this spring." "Meanwhile, the company's started adding back references to its former self after abruptly replacing the Weight Watchers name with WW in marketing materials in September. Its website and social media accounts now say: "WW. Weight Watchers reimagined." www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/weight-watchers-asks-oprah-for-help-after-confusing-name-change/ar-BBUamVk?ocid=ientp&fbclid=IwAR21uwh4tKrWshnjMOdGsgSzug9Z3mG0cNvxEDOuIxjxA_ByVoX83CZBn7A
