Sue, that’s sad that your nephew will be leaving Philly—I know you really enjoy seeing him.
Yes, I think DD and her XBF are crazy not to work on this—and I think he would if she now would accept her own part in the problem—and I do think she has a part in it—now that I know more about what he has said is the issue—I , myself, at one point two weeks ago asked her, “Do you really love him?” To which she said yes, I do. I said, “Then why are you asking me if you should be with him now at the worst time of his life so far?” She said, “well I asked him if he wanted me to come over and he said whatever,” so I don’t think he does. I said, “Wow, do you think in the midst of grieving the pending loss of his dad and watching him die he can make you feel wanted—just be there for him if you care.” One of the things he emailed to her yesterday was that he felt she didn’t care as much as he did because when he most needed her she asked if she should come. I couldn’t understand DD when that happened and it happened a few times that week—even in regard to the funeral which I found shocking and I felt disappointed in my own DD. Personally I think she should embrace her role in this and they should get some help to work on that and the daughter thing which really is not good and that is something he doesn’t really want to deal with. SO if both of them are too stubborn to work on what is needed then I guess there is no hope. As scarce as really nice people are for relationships I think they both will regret walking away. But when your kid is 48 sometimes you just don’t have the power to help those things happen. So I have to let them make their own decision.
Jordan is getting counseling finally to deal with his depression and withdrawal—he has to move forward with this—it’s like he has pulled back from everything—so worry about him—he seems to like the counselor—we found an Asian Am counselor—I felt he would be more comfortable with talking about his dad and their life which I know is part of this, with someone who might understand some of the dynamics involved. We couldn’t find a Medicaid one so I am just covering it—we have to get him back on track. I think young people are dealing with a lot of depression and anxiety today and with Covid it’s compounded even worse.
I am back to handbuilding clay—really love it—made a low bowl today that I think I will love using. Made a cactus lidded jar on Friday and Saturday. Tomorrow am going to try to make a plaster cast of a beet leaf—I have some huge ones that didn’t develop bulbs—so that I can make a long beet leaf bowl. Hope it works. Haven’t used Plaster of Paris in years!
I hope JoAnne is okay. My boss’s niece is close to coming home—has been hospitalized for weeks with it. My classmate was doing well yesterday—so hoping she doesn’t get it as bad as most people our age—have not heard from her today yet.
No 4th excitement at our house—heard a few booms and that was it. Holly, hope you are staying well also—stay safe, Sue—

Hi all,
Back from the mountains. It was nice and cool—in the mid 70s. Hard to come back. We ate well. It was nice with the reduced capacity because it wasn’t so loud.
My cucumber plant is taking over. When I got back it had creeped over one of the pepper plants. It is a bush cucumber. I probably should have put it in its own box, but it was supposed to be a more compact kind. No tomatoes yet, but there are blooms, so hope to start seeing some soon.
Sue, so far, so good. Not much difference really

Hi!
We got a new vaccum cleaner, yay! This is our 3rd cordless Dyson. SO is so hard on them and they get completely destroyed because he never maintained them very well. I hate vaccuming and never had to with our housekeeper coming every week, SO used it for the den, which is now his studio. Anyway, he is now reading and watching videos on how to maintain them now, haha.
I have been cooking things that I haven't in years and years. A few days ago I made beef stroganoff! Also made some lo mein type dishes. Just trying to come up with some different things.
I can't believe what's going on in the southern states, it's horrifying. I'm so glad our governor, mayor are so careful with re-opening. Philadelphia did a little pause and postponed indoor dining until at least Aug 1.
Joan, it really sounds like DD and her boyfriend are not really talking and expressing themselves to each other. Seems she is being ultra sensitive and reactive, instead of just waiting a bit before making decisions on their future together. He is also reacting rashly as well. Gosh if I did that SO and I would have been over within 2 years of being together. It is acknowledged that I am the more mature one, haha. Glad Jordan is seeing therapist, he sounds like a great kid.
Holly, have you seen any weight loss yet? Glad you had a good time away, did your BF go with you too?
Oh, Joan, there are 2 cruises planned. This Nov is the Antarctic - Miami to Rio, which I do not think will happen. The Reykjavic to Lima and the Arctic cruise on Seabourn's brand new Venture ship is next year, Sept 2021
I hope Jojo is ok, she hasn't posted in awhile.

Wondering also about JoAnne—hope she is not sick!
my schoolmate is doing ok so far— makes me wonder if the Covid is less because she is so full of chemo. Anyway I am glad. Her dr will start chemo next week on Thursday if she does not get worse.
so I did hear Antarctica too — ok— thank goodness, thought I was losing it!
DD’s BF called her today and they talked—he said he really hates how he handled things and feels he cannot give up on this if she is willing to see him and work on both their issues— they are going to meet tonight—communicates the key to everything if you care about being happy together. I honestly think they could work through this if they both agree to be one and not let kids interfere with their relationship (on my grandson’s part as well) and be open about their needs instead of nursing disappointments when something doesn’t happen to one person’s expectations. So I am glad they are talking— he is not a jerk like the others that have been in her life.
Sue, I made a tomato pie— a recipe from a PBS chef show— labor intensive time wise but was really good— funny we both loved it cold with avocado slices on top! It had abou seven of my tomatoes and four onions in it— they were carmelized fo about two+ hours! Tonight we had a bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich and small cup of my bean kale soup. The tomatoes are so sweet this year!
I am making candlesticks of various designs for DGD in NYC. Made 3 today and I think they will be really cool. She wants simple modern designs. Made two plaster cast molds of great big beet leaves on one of the beet-less ones— they are cured now so might try making a bowl tomorrow using one of them.
we are going to try housecleaning with some modifications— we will change the beds so that she is not handling bed linens. We will also leave for most of the time and hole up in the den when we get back until she is done.

Hi all,
Sue, no weight changes that I can tell. I will find out at my next appointment in September.
Joan, glad that they are going to try to work it out. Good communication is key!
Yes, my BF and I went by ourselves. I think next time we are going to try to go back to the cabin we stayed in in Asheville last year since it had a lot more space and included a kitchen.
I’m looking forward to finishing up summer classes so that I can have a few weeks before starting up Fall classes. I will be teaching two sections of the research skills class and taking two grad classes, one of which is just a proposal for my final capstone. Hard to believe that I am almost done with the program.
Starting to see some progress with the garden. I should see some cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers soon.

I text messaged JoAnne—she does not have the virus—but is fighting shingles again—send positive thoughts her way. Has to be hard!
Got down to 80 this morning at 5:15 so we walked 3.7 mi—then came back and have been cleaning out my garden—cutting kale, pulling the no-beet beets out—have to stop now as is almost 90 and very little shade left back here—time for a shower—have teeth cleaning today which scares the heck out of me but I’m already 4 months late nearly. Frightening how bad Florida is getting and AZ and TX, too. My boss’s niece at 61 died of it. After over a month in the hospital all by herself. The effect of this on family is so awful. A friend of one of my former students went to the beach for a few days. Came back and in two weeks the whole family had Covid! They are from here. Makes me grateful for having canceled our week.

I am having iced coffee most mornings—think I like it better than hot coffee. Or even iced tea.

Two good pieces of news to share: My friend in TX texted negative now for Covid—she did not get hospitalized—will start her chemo again tomorrow. She is ecstatic and will be eating no more dinners or lunches out with friends.
My dentist appt was so good—the piece of bone sticking out of my gum turned out to be a jaw bone chip (probably from when they took the implant out last year) that finally worked it ‘s way up to the surface—he popped it out after one little shot of novacain. My abscess on the other side is going away after three treatments with antibiotic mouth rinse—five more days of it—no infection showed up on the implant it was near on the X-ray. Feel so relieved. One cavity will be filled Tuesday of next week—I knew it was there.
Haven’t really accomplished anything today since then—just didn’t have the gumption to start a project—oh well, there’s always tomorrow, right. Lots of tomorrows available!!

Hi everyone, so sorry I have been so delinquent in posting . I have been tryinggo get to bed earlier and that is usually whenI have posted in the past. This is the second time in 18 mo.s that I have had shingles! My face looks terrible and feels worse. I was trying to get by without MD help but finally broke down today and called my primary care today. He sent Valtrex And wants me to come in if not better in a week. I was hoping he would send me steroids which seemed to help most last time. The Valtrex usually doesn’t do much after three days of symptoms - this is about a week I have had lesions. My neck in the back and my lower face really hurt.
Larry and I both had the original shingles vaccine but have not been able to find the new one available anywhere. I guess we should have pursued it more vigorously. I Will certainly find it this time!
DH is fine
We have stayed home with only trips to pick up ordered groceries or prescriptions. DH does go to a Wed morning bible study with 2 other guys. I was going to my private violin lesson on every other Wed a.m. but not not now with these shingles.
I am crocheting a yellow summer top now. Also have been knitting socks to get a stash for Christmas.
Schools here will open mid Aug . DS and DDIL have the choice of virtual or regular classes for their kids and they have decided on the virtual. DS will still be working from home til the end of the year and DDIL will work from home 2 days a week and will go in two days from 3p til 8 p DS and DDIL in California haven’t gotten any direction on DGD’s school yet. They don’ t usually start til after Labor Day though. DS there is going into office every 3 days and working from home otherwise.
Joan- so sorry you have had such problems with your teeth implants but glad you could get it corrected. You have had some beautiful pieces of pottery on FB- you have really developed your skill. Thanks for your concern about me and DH. I am so thankful that all of you are well too in this crazy time

Good to hear from you JoAnne. The mother in me is thinking you should have had meds sooner!
Vegas is starting to have serious problems. My friends oncologist husband told her that the hospital nearest us it completely full—people had to spend the night in ER as there were no beds left at all. Covid is increasing rapidly. He said we are in serious trouble. we now have mandatory masks but there are those who still fight it. I think now they can’t get in the casino / hotels until they are masked.
DD said in Sacramento there won’t be any in person school—DGD16 is very anxious and depressed about it. It’s really sad for these kids—will need a lot of counseling I. Am afraid.
I love doing the clay work, JoAnne—I am only handbuilding until it cools down as I can only use my little wheel outside. Getting up at 5:15 and walking at 5:30 daily. Eating tomatoes a lot—out of the garden—am going to walk some down to a neighbor in a few minutes —it’s 101º now—in a few minutes the sun will go down and then I’ll venture out there!
Slow cooked chicken thighs and made pulled barbecue chicken yesterday—so glad that DH is willing to have two meals in a row of something—I use change the veggies or salad. Have to plan something for tomorrow==even DH is feeling sorry that I am having to plan every meal.
BF’s are both doing something risky—he is going to a funeral reception and she is going to travel with her two kids in motor homes for two weeks to SLC and Jackson Hole and Yellowstone—so we will not see them for a month as she will have to quarantine after in order for us to get together again—bummer.
Holly, looked like you were getting some nice cucumbers!
We finished The Dutch House—it’s fiction but a really good read. Now we are going to read Just Mercy.

Hi all,
I feel like we’re in an endless loop. It is disturbing how many people refuse to wear a mask around here. My county is doing a hybrid or virtual option for k-12. Hybrid students will attend 2 days a week with one group going Mon-Tues and another going Thurs-Fri. At the university. it gets trickier because we need residential students in order to stay open, so we have to find a balance.
Yes, I have lots of cucumbers. The tomatoes are coming, but I read that the hot weather will stall the ripening. I also have basil that is doing really well, sweet potatoes, and bell peppers.
I am going to get some ingredients to make pesto, and the black bean and corn salad to help use them up. There seems to be an uptick in gardening due to the pandemic. That’s good, because there’s a lot of gratification in being able to grow and eat your own food.
Jo Anne, how’s the violin going? Did you get your string fixed?
Joan, yes it is tough on the kids not being able to see their friends and do activities that we all take for granted.

So Vegas district has that hybrid plan as well, but teachers are afraid to go to work—many are filing for retirement if they have enough years, many have literally resigned, the visa restriction was canceling out about 200 that had been hired out of country—don’t know if some of the pull back from that has fixed that—we are going to be in bad shape here I am afraid—and the superintendent of schools here is in big trouble —the board is thinking about firing him. What a disaster.
I am rescuing many tomatoes—I check every morning —if they look like they are getting a bit of sunburn I pick and put them in my paper bag ripening spot. I have so many—have got to plan something to use them—only so many I can eat raw. Have given some away and probably lay will do some more. No more blossoms are setting now with the heat. My basil is doing well too but I notice that in the higher heat it gets a stronger flavor—takes less of it. When you get sweet potatoes send me some pictures—I heard they do well here but know nothing about them and would like to grow some next year. I heard their leaves are beautiful.
We had a new bird for us in the yard yesterday—a brown headed cowbird—the one that lays it’s eggs in other birds’ nests. Have never seen one before. Wonder if they got lost?
Have been playing with clay daily—made 4 matching cereal bowls that nest—the first set—plan to make each of my kids a set if I can find a glaze combo I love for them. We went out and saw the comet two nights. Pretty cool. It’s going to be 110º today! Yuk. Didn’t walk—was 87 and humid this morning.

What about salsa?
I made some pesto tonight with my basil that turned out pretty good. I just threw it in with some chicken and israeli couscous.
Sweet potatoes are interesting plants. Right now the leaves are taking over the garden.

Gave my WW BF from way back a bag of green tomatoes and two ripe ones—she fried greens tonight—her DH called me to rave about them—he loves them so much.
I might have to get some ingredients and make another tomato pie. That would use up about 7 or 8 of them. It was a lot of work but probably would seem easier the second time around.
DGD19 is working at a country club—serving on the outdoor patio—serving tables for the first time—she is in shock about the money that is spent on dinners and wine and is in the cheaper area. She is happy to be working tho even tho its a long commute—says there are no jobs in Manhattan. This is in Manchester . Saturday she is doing a double shift—10L30 to 10:30==she will be so wiped out! She said she’s sleeping really well!
we were able to walk this morning—down to 80 and dry this morning. Was so nice and sitting on the patio again for an hour of coffee was pleasant as well.

Hi!
This week gyms have opened up in the city. Masks must be worn inside, no classes, bring own towels, scheduled times and must reserve in advance. Of course, I'm not going yet. I'm going to wait and see, our positive cases are up from a month ago. I really want to see it going down before venturing out.
I went for a drive last week. I just drove around the neighborhood for about 30 minutes. There was outdoor dining and some people walking around, most people walking wore masks - I would say about 90% wore masks, the ones who didn't wear masks were social distancing. People sitting eating of course didn't have masks on. When they first started outdoor dining a few weeks ago, there was an incident in my neighborhood where somebody on a bike riding by a restaurant yelled out for people to be socially distanced (tables were too close) and a bar owner came out with a gun! omg! it was all over social media and the guy was charged. I hope his bar loses business.
Jojo, I'm sorry you're going through shingles again! I was on the waitlist for the shot before I left on the cruise, then of course, the virus came, I have no idea where I am in the waitlist now. Glad that you are ok though.
Joan, it's great that your DD and BF are trying to work things out. How about slow roasting your tomatoes then freezing them for later use? It takes practically no effort. Good news about your TX friend. Oh, did you know there is a pottery show that is the pottery equivalent of the Britains Greatest Baking Show, I just read something about that! You should google, I bet it's amateur potters with a project each episode and they get judged.
Holly, man I can remember when you first started grad school, time is flying by so fast. Culinary school for me seems eons ago, but was only just 2+, so much has happened since then.
Well, SO just reserved another cruise. Jan 2022 world cruise, on the same ship as the one we were just on (it's the only that does world cruise on this cruise line), different destinations though. This time we reserved the whole thing - almost 150 days! I've already been in touch with a couple that we became friends with on the last cruise and they have already reserved their favorite suite, it is the winter garden suite, the largest and most expensive on the ship.
