I love the Great Pottery Throw Down—have watched a couple seasons twice! I watched on YouTube but I just heard today that HBO is picking it up in America. I don’t have HBO so am hoping new season gets put on YouTube still. I love it! Actually learn stuff, too.
Wow, 150 days—almost half a year, Sue! That will be amazing—you’ll have sea legs for weeks after! LOL
Had a hard time sleeping last night—DH too—our DD’s had a little falling out over Covid—masking up and not social distancing—DD here posted a pic on IG with four women she went to Utah with and spent a weekend in the mountains—they all had Covid tests but none quarantined after the test to make sure there wasn’t yet another exposure before getting the results. DD in CA pulled a “parent” type move and DD here was super angry—-they never fight—have not really had a disagreement since about 20 years ago and both of us were so stressed. But we both managed to stay out of it and I got a call this morning that they called and hashed it out rather harshly then talked some more this morning and are okay—so maybe we will be able to sleep tonight! Parenting stress just does not completely go away!
DD here has been doing more and more tho and we worry about it as well—but as parents we cannot control these nearly 50 year old kids. DH did refuse to take care of her cats last weekend—his form of saying he was not comfortable with what she is doing. She and her BF have eaten out several times recently as well.
I’ve been watching Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich on Netflix—oh my gosh—it is hard to believe any man could be so sick and perverted and pull off what he did—they need to throw the book at his partner who has now been arrested. I have one episode left.
We are having housecleaning done today other than the bed linens—she has lost her helper and it takes so, so long—has been 4.5 hrs—almost done!
I made another set of candleholders for DD—they are so cute—hope the size works out right for a candle—well, I should say I hope I can find some candles that are less than two in and more than half in in diameter—the clay shrinks so much—won’t know exactly what size it becomes till it’s done! I should calculate and figure it out next time!
I have continued my walking—bought new Brooks from Zappos as mine were on sale since a new style will be out soon—I was shocked—did not realize how much all this walking had worn my soles down! Should have gotten new ones a month ago!

Finishing up the summer teaching and grad class. I really learned a lot from the Editing and Publishing class.
People are just fed up with something that doesn’t seem to have an end.
Wow, a 150 day cruise! I love to travel, but two weeks is my max. I was looking at some trips through Go Ahead Tours. I want to go back to Europe if they’ll ever let American back in, heh.
The garden is really coming along. Lots of good cucumbers and basil. Tomatoes and peppers should be ready in the next week or so.

Hi everyone! Everyone talking about the summer tomatoes just makes me miss them more. I am off the tomatoes and tomato based foods, eggplant, and while wheat bread in order to try to get my GI system straightened out. I took the plunge and am trying Dr. Grundy’s “ leaky gut” pills . He suggests leaving those certain foods off too. I got the pills yesterday and have been on them for 24 hrs. Hope I am not wasting my money. Don’t usually use these type of things but need to do something. I really miss the tomatoes.
DH has shingles now. Got Valtrex yesterday for him to start on. Yes Joan, I probably should have had the med sooner myself - but really thought it would not be as bad this time- boy was I wrong. Mine are getting better but I am still not ready to go out in public( not that I am going anywhere) - so violin lessons are still out. Haven’t been able to practice anyway since I have shingles on my chin. I only had two lessons when I started back then got shingles.
Since I have had shingles my waliking has been in the house- I don’t walk as far each day but average about 2 miles per day. My foot has been giving me fits with the plantar fasciitis and / or heel spur that I have. Bought some new house shoes ( flip flops) called Offaas- al sad o bout Vionic inserts for my tennis shoes. They all help some. I guess after the Covid stuff is over , I will have to go to an orthopedic md about it.
Wow, it seems all I have talked about this time is all the aches and pains. It will be great to be over it all someday!
Sue, I have the Dyson cordless vac and love it- ever wasn’t any other after getting it. Makes vacuuming a pleasure. Great for the steps too,
Holly- didn’t see your cucumber pics I don’t think but bet you are enjoying them! Making some short socks out of Cotten for DGD in California . The thread has just a little acrylic in it too and really feels soft- not as stiff as all cotton. Made the yellow summer top out of it too.
Joan the candlesticks and dishes you have mad lately all sound so useful. Are you planning ahead to Christmas gifts that you will make this year? When I was walking outside I walked at 7am - don’t think I could get up and do it at 5:30 a like you. I know it is much cooler then tough. Even st 7 sometimes I would get hot,
I have gained about 6-7 lbs that I just can’t seems to loose. Need to get back to some regular exercise other than walking too.

I think Transcendent means “long winded”! LOL
Yes, JoAnne—giving each kid a set of matching bowls—2 or 3 sizes bowls and a large salad bowl—I have one set 3/4 done—made my plaster molds so it will go faster once they are cured. So funny to feel them—they are in the sun all day—and it only gets down to 84 at night—and yet they are cold—means they are still curing!
The candlesticks are for DGD19 who turns 20 Sept 1–hope I can get at least three of them done and glazed in time. She would like a small tabletop arrangement of candle holders. Will start glazing them today.
My friend whose kiln I join, woke up bleeding profusely yesterday and is in hospital—running all kinds of tests—holding my breath that she does not have cancer somewhere! So scary and her DH cannot of course even see her! Such a horrible time for anyone needed hospital care!
Oh dear—the shingles thing sounds so awful—I am hurting for you!
Seems I have trained my body for 5:15 wake up—I don’t even need an alarm now! DH does about 3 days a week—I usually do 6 or 7. It’s not making me lose weight however. I lost about 3 # of my gain doing the intermittent 8/16 fasting routine which we still do as it feels right now—but no more so far. Everyone I know is struggling again weight gain with this! I think it’s the need for comfort, lack of companionship from friends, limited getting out.
We are in for about 8 or 9 days predicted to be 108 t0 110º—ugh—so if it doesn’t get down to at least 83 or 84 I won’t be walking a few days. Today was fine, however.
Helping DH go thru garage cupboards and get rid of stuff—I sort the throw aways and box up and put signs out for free stuff—yesterday 6 boxes disappeared!! Today I put another batch out—we are trying to do about an hour or hour and a half each morning. He said it helps to have someone do it with him—keeps him from over sentimentalizing bolts and screws I guess! Ha Ha!
DD here is stressed—SOB X BIL wants to cut her alimony way way back—says he’s not making big money now—however, he’s never bothered to try working since fired a year and a half ago—severance pay runs out next month. She has hired an attorney as he thinks he can just walk away—he is pissed and threatening all kinds of doom—it will be costly but I don’t think he can get his way as in our state if you were assigned alimony it is an amount you owe—if you cannot pay in the years assigned you have to pay less for more years. With Covid her new business has been about 1/3 to 1/2 what she’d gotten it up to—so this is bad news. He is wealthy enough he doesn’t bother to work as he made about a million a year.

Hi all,
Finally done with classes. I have a few weeks off before the Fall semester starts.
It feels like a rainforest outside. Thankfully, we’ve been getting storms almost daily so I haven’t had to do much watering.
I tend to gain in the summer because of fluid retention. Nothing really fits, but I don’t want to buy more clothes if they will fit again in a couple of months. Thankfully, we all wear jeans at work.
Joan, wow, that’s a long severance. My tomatoes are taking their time turning. I think I’m going to have a bunch starting this week.
Jo Anne, ouch! I haven’t been knitting much lately. I’ll probably pick it back up again soon to get ready for holiday sales.

Having an issue this weekend with dizziness—and my BP while it is not spiking is higher than it should be—138/85 —on meds—that is a lot up from my normal of 120’s over 60’s. I think I’ll call the dr on Monday after reading about dizziness and strokes, etc. Just feeling like something is weirdly different in the way I feel. I’m also very tired. I wonder if my iron is way down again? Ugh!
My good friend in Bozeman, MT, has Covid—she is 80 and I worry so much about her—she said she’s been so cautious when others have not—she cannot think of any way she was exposed except that in MT about half the people won’t wear the required masks so she does but others in the grocery stores do not. Her temp was up to 103.5 and she said goes up and down like crazy. Luckily her daughter is with her.
I did a clay class on line yesterday and made a darling little pitcher—just the right size for salad dressing—it really turned out nice. I did not walk this morning—the high today is to be 113 and mornings are pretty hot already. Plus I think I won’t till I talk to the doctor and see what is going on.
Holly, enjoy your freedom from work for a while!
DGD19 has decided to apply for college at the U of San Francisco and if accepted for spring semester will move back to CA and finish school there. She is realizing that Covid has really shut down the performing arts—even if things open up young new people admitted in will be rare most likely as their training has virtually shut down—she is loving her school classes so much—wants to major in performing arts and social justice and art history/museum management—am sure that first one will eventually fall by the wayside but by doing it that way she will get to transfer her Ailey credits for dance. She has a virtual interview and review of her application on Monday. Hoping she is accepted.

Happy Belated Birthday, Joan!
That sounds like a good plan. The Arts make you a better creative thinker and she could do side gigs teaching dance.
We’re ramping up for the Fall. I have to teach two sections of the Research Skills class. I am also taking Teaching of Writing and the proposal course for my capstone, which I’ll take in the spring. Hard to believe I’m almost finished. I really enjoyed this program. Once I finish I’ll be eligible to teach English at the undergraduate level.
The tomatoes are finally starting to ripen. I had a big, juicy one for dinner. I’m pretty much over cucumbers, haha.

Hi! There were 2 tornadoes in our area, but out in the suburbs. We just had very heavy rain and strong winds, not even the strongest that I've experience - thank goodness. A lot of flooding though. My parents had some water in their basement. It has been very humid here too, and I just saw today there may be as many as 24 tornadoes this year! Our positive cases have come back down, not as low as the lowest point back in June. Joan, are you feeling better now? What did your dr say about your blood pressure and dizziness? That is very worrisome Happy birthday! Holly, I used to think a 2 week vacation was a really long time, it's amazing how fast time goes by. It becomes a lifestyle. We met so many people with multiple homes and they basically go from home to vactaion home to cruise to land vacations. Jojo, are the leaky guts pills working? I hope your DH is over the shingles by now. I talked to my pharmacist and I plan to go get my annual flu vaccine and shingles shot at the same time. Ugh, I've gained 10 lbs! I know I have to start something soon, just feel so unmotivated. Last night we ordered pizza for delivery. This place got Bon Appetit best pizza of the entire country a few years ago. It was a tiny restaurant with only take out and lines out the door (so of course, we never went, we hate lines), they then moved to a larger eat in place but we still didn't go because it was out of the way. Well with the virus, they deliver now. It was really, really good, but at over $40 (includes delivery fee, tip to kitchen staff and tip to driver) not something we'll be doing a lot, the pizza itself was just plain tomato sauce and mozzarella and $22. It was best I've had in a long time though, I think they put butter in the sauce. Below is a link to a tour of our favorite cruise ship, Sojourn. We have been on her more than any of the other Seabourn ships. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye8ubWpb5_E&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR1mAJhxsAnKF-cuIicU8xI2veg0y49GW7tch6_igRQx_qR83d9475EVyj8

So good to hear from you, Sue and Holly!
Had a really good birthday—lots of phone calls from near and far and both girls sent flowers and a friend dropped off the neatest apron for my clay work—no tie—over the head, one piece—perfect length. That was so nice. Next day my housekeeper showed up with flowers and two fruit tarts from a MX bakery—Oh my gosh, tarts from a bakery that actually tasted good—the filling and the pastry were so yummy! The day after my birthday I got sick—scared me so badly—thought I have Covid and immediately felt such stress and fear—fever spiked, felt horrible, couldn’t eat—I got it down with Advil and the next day didn’t have fever but had such intestinal distress. We think now that I got one of the Bakersfield onions with salmonella—I have red onion on my salad every day—Gary only has a salad with dinner if I make another one. Finally yesterday I started feeling somewhat better—today still a bit of trouble but no more dizziness.
So the dr said no extra BP meds—she said my BP isn’t that bad and that I need not to worry if I take it and it’s 150—then told me when not to take it—I have probably done so at the wrong times—so tracking morning and night and it’s relatively low—she thinks I would be dangerously low if they added on. So she helped me de-stress about that!
My friend in MT who has Covid has been declared not contagious now—she is 80–and they told her she would not probably get back to normal for six months! She said it was the worst thing she’s ever experienced. Now they wait to see if the daughter caught it taking care of her!

My daughter sent me an artsy metal crow for birthday also—Gary set it out in the back yard and the pigeons left—they are scared of it. Today I put it back out for a bit and again they zoomed out of here. But I love the crow—however, she did buy him for my yard!
Wow just saw that US cases have doubled since June—if that continues it will really get bad!
So DGD is accepted to U of SF—it’s expensive—she will need a lot of loans and grants and hoping the school offers her some help. She will start as a Junior in January. The performing arts social justice is one major I learned—she will be trained to do community work through performing arts—inclusive in low income communities, etc. She is very excited—lots to figure out—they may move her home in OCtober if Manhattan does the full semester on line again. There is no one to share apts with—no renters coming in. They will lose more money if she stays than if they gave up the last month rent before the lease.
I am walking still-3.5 to 4 miles per morning. Only missed the couple days I was so miserable.
Wow, hope the tornado prediction doesn’t come true—but climate change is definitely happening and changing our weather and storm patterns radically. We have had no rain in forever—total drought.
We pay $26 for a large Grimaldis pizza here—but it is really good. Only do it occasionally.

Happy belated birthday Joan - glad you had a good celebration and you are healthy ( I know you are relieved about the BP scare and the COVID scare). Tell me about the bad onions- I haven’t heard
I am going to the dermatologist tomorrow to see if she can help me clear these things up faster. Last time I had shingles , it was the beginning of May and I wasn’t clear until September. Don’t want that again!
Last Sunday I got up from a chair where I had been sitting with my legs crossed ( I do know better). My leg was numb and I twisted my ankle. It has been swollen all week but strangely no pain. The swelling is starting to go down some now. I have an adjustable bed and put the foot up at night.
Ofcourse with the ankle And the shingles, I have not been walking. Just cannot get rid of this extra 10 lbs I’ve gained. I may have to explore WW again soon. Sue maybe we could do it together, if I could get motivated.
Holly , great that you now have some time off. Do you think you will have an opportunity to teach English (or a desire to do so)? Guess this is not a good time to seek a new job - at least til after the Covid crisis
Larry is completely over shingles- wish I was!
I have tried to go out for about 30min each day to do a little yard work so that it doesn’t get away from me. With my foot and the heat 30 min is about all I can do
I have gotten sooooo lazy that I hate the thought of going to MD tomorrow

Hi All,
I am not planning to change careers anytime soon. Academic librarians typically get a second master’s in a subject area. It also means that I can teach English as an adjunct if I want to. We offer some online classes.
I am reading The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. Not sure I could handle the extreme changes in daylight hours throughout the year in Alaska.
I felt the earthquake last weekend. It shook my bed for a second.
Joan, congrats to DGD on getting in. Hopefully, she’ll be eligiable for some financial aid.

Holly, The Great Alone is a really excellent book—very tense and like you, I can hardly handle all that darkness just reading about it!! I just finished Just Mercy—Oh my gosh—eye opener!
Took a zoom clay workshop from an artist in BC, Canada today—wow, best workshop I’ve every done—learned so much that I can hardly wait to try! My birthday present came yesterday—my slab roller—have to assemble it and it’s a tiny bit complicated—so DH cleaned up some of his clutter in the garage—I did mine the last two days—and we will try to assemble it tomorrow morning before the heat is stifling—which by the way, right now is terrible—another heat wave—we will have ten days above 105 and about five of them will be above 110! Needless to say did not walk this morning.
I finished glazing my cat plate/bowl—Oh my goodness—if the colors hold up bright enough in firing it will be so pretty I believe. It looked so good that I named it and even wrote the name of the piece on the bottom! Glazing it took me 5 1/2 hours yesterday! We won’t be able to fire until the heat wave gets the night and early morning temps down below 100-==this morning by 5:30 it was over 90º!
there was salmonella in red, white, yellow and sweet onions from Bakersfield, CA—one of the country’s biggest growers of onions—they have been pulled from shelves in all 50 states but there are still some pre-made items that have the onions in them—I don’t buy that kind of stuff but I must have gotten some bad ones—just feeling right again the past two days!
I’m so angry about the destruction of the post office and our mail service! I have a feeling I will get charged fees on my Medicare bill as it will never arrive on time. DD’s birthday card still has not arrived in Sacramento—by now I could have walked it there—it’s been 13 days since I mailed it AT the post office!
