Hi everyone, A dear friend’s husband died of Covid last week. He was an uncontrolled diabetic( didn’t even check his blood sugar) , overweight, and my age- so very high risk. His wife got sick too but was healthy and got well and went home from the hospital in about 4-5 days. So sad. But they would not wear Masks and pretty much lived recklessly during this dangerous time. I feel so sorry for my friend-,this was a second marriage (her first husband died). They had only been married 8-10 yrs.
I went to the dermatologist on Wednesday and have a bunch of creams for my face. She still does not want me to wear foundation makeup. Good thing I’m not going any where.
I think I am ready to start walking outside again. Will do so if I get up in time tomorrow. Joan, you have really had some heat there!
Sue I think the leaky gut med is helping. At least I have not had any more GI episodes since taking it. Thank goodness! But it may be too soon to know
I feel so fat. And really have to do something about my middle- exercises I guess-am drinking wine again which doesn’t help.

JoAnne. So good to hear from you again. Yes, super hot here—longest heat only spell I think I’ve ever seen here since moving here in 73. Awful.. I finally started walking again yesterday as I cannot wait for cooler temps—today I was literally wet with sweat after 2.8 miles—was sort of humid but never did rain.
I’m so sorry to hear about your friend’s husband. Crazy not to take precautions even without compromised health! this thing is so unpredictable.
I too, feel so fat—the past two days all I’ve wanted to do was eat for some reason! Made shrimpceviche for dinner tonight with a baked potato—mine was purple. I’m so tired of endless cooking!
DH’s second cousin with whom we are very close had to evacuate from their house in Felton CA—they don’t know yet if it has burned—it is situated in the redwoods near Santa Cruz—so beautiful and so on fire. She said she cried all the way to Riverside where they are staying at a cousin’s house who is out of town. I offered them our home in case the worst happens—we have a guest room with attached bathroom. I just cried talking with her—their place is homey and down to earth and lovely—they only escaped with what fit in a small car.
air quality is terrible everywhere out west—everything seems to be on fire! It’s so heartbreaking.
Finally got a haircut—it’s sort of pixie-ish. I like it.
Finally having social distance breakfast in backyard tomorrow with BF’s—she has quarantined after her trip and no sign of the virus —we wil order out and pick up curbside. Will be hot but with outside swamp cooler on tolerable for an hour or so. First time having anyone here in about five or six weeks.
Several private schools choose face to face school—now Covid is showing up within the first five days and several teachers and classes are quarantined. Some of the private schools are shutting down. A kindergartener was in my friend’s class so she is now home and teaching from there—some kids are in school and some at home—what a huge mess it is! Public school here made decision to go on line only so at least they won’t start one thing and then move to another.

Hi All,
NC is still in a phased opening. Right now, bars, gyms, and theaters are still closed until at least September 11. I was reading an article yesterday about how this thing will probably be with us forever, we just learn to manage it better like with the flu. The more we learn about it, the better the treatment will get.
Schools are dealing with logistical nightmares, especially large universities. Once the worst is behind us though, I think there will be a lot more learning options to choose from (virtual and face to face). We are really fortunate that we have the technology to make virtual learning happen.
My sister got a kitten. My dad found her on campus and there was no mother cat around. She named her Betty, which is a funny name for such a young cat. I guess she’ll grow into it.
I am feeling fat too. I think I might have an ovarian cyst that causes me to swell up during my time of month and it is painful during that time as well. I am going to get it checked out at my next visit in September.
Joan, my tomatoes have finally started coming in. So many of them have burst though, especially the cherry tomatoes. I’ve been trying to catch them before they turn fully red. The sweet potato leaves have purple flowers on them now.
Jo Anne, so sorry to hear about your friend’s husband.

So sorry to hear about Sue’s father. In looking for her address in my S&S Goddeses diresctory that we made years ago, I realized I do not have Joan’s address or email( or her husband’s) and do not have Holly’s new address. We did this so we would have contact info if anything happened to anyone. I will update it and send everyone a copy, if you will send me your info. My email is jojowo@bellsouth.net . I have Valerie’s info too and will include it but don’t have her new address.

Is there something new happening with Sue’s father? Did I miss a post? Will go back in and look.
I’ll send you information, JoAnne.
Had BF’s over and did curbside pickup breakfast—first time in weeks. Only a month and we will get our airstream rental and head to Sacramento. We reserved it so long ago and at that point it seemed forever away!
I love the kitty’s name—little Betty—I think it’s cute! DD’s new kitty name I’d Rosie! She is full of energy!
No word on cousin’s house in CA yet—hoping it did not burn. Seeing a picture someone posted coming into San Fran by air it was so horrifying—just fires everywhere!
Another week of 105-109 temps predicted here—but a week from today we are supposed to get down to 100º for a few days—oh what a relief that will be! I walked again this morning and finally made it over 3 miles—working my way back up—if I manage to get out before sun up it’s not bad but this week is more humid.
apparently =the PA was right about my dizziness—since drinking four 28 oz cans of my water instead of 3 I am seldom dizzy. Seemed impossible to me that I would need that much.

I’m sorry about my insensitive questions—did not check my email until Holly told me to by private message—hard times for families and loss with the insanity we are living restricted by the virus threat all the time!
I also think emotionally we are already so close to down that it’s harder to manage the blows that come on top of all this in life!
Today is the first day of virtual school—of course our district created a whole new virtual program instead of going with google classroom with all it’s faults but atl least also all its familiarity to both staff and students. So they didn’t ever do a full district test run which they could have—they could have had three mornings where every student just logged in at their assigned time and then use the data to know whether the system worked. But nope. And now DGS and his friends cannot even get in—it’s so frustrating to me—having worked in the schools for 34 years I just do not get this lack of foresight!

Glad you got the email Joan. The schools here took the first week to just get the technology straight. The next week actual classes began. Worked out fine.

Oh they took an extra week here also but with an entirely new and yet unused program the week was spent on setting up and training the teachers to use it—no one thought to do a full district trial run! We have had so many superintendents in the past 15 years that there’s always this upheaval at the top—and the board totally passed over two extremely competent women, both of whom had been upper admin. Personnel here before—-and chose a man, of course—there has only been one woman supt. Here in the history of the district and that was back in the late forties I believe. This recent pass over is the worst yet because of the high quality of both female applicants. One of them has now been hired by the governor as state supt of public instruction. They goofed! Honestly I think women are better planners and problem solvers in general and it’s a shame this district is so biased.

We went over to see the DGK’s here today and had lunch there. They are in virtual school so have been at home and well . I don’t feel very threatened by Covid with them. DS has been working from home and DDIL goes in to work but it is only her ,her boss and one other person in the office.
Last week I finally cut the grass . Oh my! It was so tall. I had to bow the yard afterwards or it would have looked like hay being cut. The riding mower’s battery went dead when I left the lights on; so I had to finish the whole yard with the gasoline hand mower. Ugh! Got to get that mower fixed!
Coming up short on yarn in the top I’m doing and the yarn is unavailable til November. Guess it will be for next summer.
Larry is doing the funeral for our friend at the National military cemetery near us on Tuesday. I am not going and my friend says she understands.
Hot and HUMID here. A little better today with the humidity.

JoAnne, it seems like a lot for you to do to mow that big yard. Does DH not ever do it? I just cannot imagine how hard it is!
I did not walk this morning—slept in—last night about bed time (early because of walking) we got an email and they canceled our trailer rental for our Sacramento trip in 3 weeks! Neither of us would have been able to sleep so stayed up searched for rentals—we finally found one in Placerville CA so will drive there on the 22nd and then just tow it to Sac and park in their driveway for five days. Then drop it off and come home. Shaves two days of driving off our trip which is good but we may not get to see DGS19 in Reno on the way back as formerly planned. At least we still get to go..
DGD16 got her drivers license.=passed the driver’s test.
I made five small Meyer Lemon Shaker pies today out of a batch of pie filling I had frozen two years ago—we ate one little one—will give a couple away tomorrow—they are so darn yummy—lemon rind and all—I could eat a piece right now!!
I planted snap peas today. Soaked them for a day ahead of time. Am very excited as I think we are going to bisque fire a kiln load tomorrow. Then we will glaze fire another load the next couple days.. First time in so long! I bought new clay today so am ready to start on bowls again.
I am either having terrible allergy problems (very high pollen alert here) or have a cold—sneezing and nose blowing all day today and I have a slight headache. DD is having trouble too so I think it is allergies.

Hi all,
Jo Anne, I wish I could mow my own yard, but it would take a zero turn mower to get it done in a reasonable amount of time. The guy that does it just leaves clippings everywhere. I’m planning to use someone else next year.
I’m working on some knitted stuff for the holiday sales.
Joan, I just ordered some seeds from a place in Asheville for the Fall. I am hoping to gradually expand the size of my garden.
They’re really enforcing the masks and other sanitizing at the university I work at. So far, so good.

We are having a little lovely break in the heat—the highs for the next three days are only 100 BUT this weekend it’s to be 112º on Saturday! Oh my gosh—I so hate it—our summers are getting longer and hotter every year—DH says Sept is predicted to break heat records!
DGD20–yes, she is 20 today—is working about 50 hours a week in NYC—and going to school full time—super busy—so we haven’t talked in a while. Tonight I will get her candlesticks out of the kiln and see how they turned out—they were supposed to be for her birthday! Can’t believe we have a 20 year old grandchild!

I posted this yesterday! I guess it didn't go through...
Hi all,
It's been hot and humid here, some storms due to the hurricanes, but not too bad. I can't imagine trying to exercise outside, though I do see some people jogging by Penn's Landing close to river.
Well, I finally took out my little portable stepper that I used to do when I first started WW, the first one is long gone, this one I purchased after the first one broke but hardly used it because I was going to the gym every day. So far I'm doing 30min on the stepper and 30min running in place in our second bedroom (which is really a storage place for SO's paintings these days). About 5-6 days per week. I can't believe how quickly the lbs piled on, and of course it's near impossible to get rid of them!
Holly, glad your college is being careful with opening up to students. It's so easy to think everything is normal when people are asymptomatic. I like the name Betty, maybe she should get another one and name it Veronica or Wilma - maybe this is way before your time! Didn't Valerie have an ovarian cyst?
Joan, it's nice that you can have these outdoor get togethers with friends. My neighbors and I have talked about doing that. Did you hear about your cousin's house yet, hope it didn't burn, so sad what's happening in CA year after year. Congrats to DGD20, wow, can't believe it, time goes by so fast. Is she working at a restaurant? Hope Jordan can get some help, kids these days...all my nephews have seen a therapist at some point.
Jojo, I've always been home, was just at my mom's for a day. My mom decided not to go to my aunt's after all, she didn't feel up to it. But they came down and spent the day with her. And another day my nephew picked her up and drove her to my sister's for dinner, something she couldn't do before, not wanting to leave my dad alone.
Our cruiseline officially canceled our Antarctic cruise in Nov, not a surprise. Because they canceled instead of us canceling, we got a 125% future cruise credit and several hundred $ of onboard credit , the other one that we reserved on their new ship is also canceled. The new ship is behind construction schedule due to corona - delays in getting materials and workers. But since it is rescheduled the end of 2021, it is too close to our World Cruise which starts in Jan 2022. We kind of knew this is would happen, so it's fine. We'll just have a bunch of future credits plus onboard $ to spend on tours, manicures, etc.

Wow, Sue , once they are cruising again, you’ll have credit for a year!! LOL! This thing is so destructive—the performing artists are being devastated. No telling what will be left when this is finally controlled. And will it ever? Pulling out of the world wide effort so limits us—I feel cheated—
The MGM is laying off a lot of people nation wide—most here in Vegas they said. They figure all the casinos will soon follow suit. Our governor has postponed evictions for another 45 days but what then? Are we going to have thousands of homeless? It’s just so overwhelming!
Our cousins house was saved—their whole block was saved—luckily the command headquarters for the fire fighters was moved near their block so that helped. They are not yet back—are concerned about what smoke damage will be there but so relieved not to lose their home and all their belongings.
We had BF’s here for curbside pick up breakfast again this morning. Will be last day of cool morning for about 6 days and then we are supposed to cool back down a bit again.
Have had two dizzy days again—no idea why—am drinking water like crazy. Yesterday I literally felt nauseated from the lite headedness. Today just a bit better. We did not walk today.
It’s hard not to eat the stress and the sameness away!!
I guess I will make a chicken, leek, barley soup today—haven’t done a soup for so long. Just so tired of trying to make up meals!
