I live in SW Connecticut and the State has just said our city is now a red zone because of our high number of COVID-19 cases.

Ohio numbers are skyrocketing, setting new record highs every day.
I never see anyone without a mask, I'm starting to wonder about their affectivness.

We are in the red zone because we have had over 15 cases per 100,000 over two weeks. Our rate was 18.9 cases per 100,000. Jennifer, It might be the young people socializing.

Jennifer, It is about more than masks. They are just one piece of this. It is about social distancing. It is about air ventilation and exchange. It is about people who have been exposed quarantining themselves even if they don't have symptoms. Ultimately it is about being socially conscious. It is about personal responsibility. It is about caring about others. It is about not being selfish.

My understanding is much of the current spread is happening within households with family members bringing the virus in unknowingly. Naturally people are not wearing masks in the home.
The Japanese conducted a study of how well different masks protect the wearer. We are always told we mainly wear the mask to protect others, but you do get a level of protection for yourself as well. Cloth mask kept out 17% of the virus, the blue disposable ones: 47%, the N95: 70%. They did the testing with actual virus.

They did a poll about 2 months ago of people who swore they always wore masks outside, but caught it, and most of them (I think 83%) had attended family gatherings of friends gatherings where they remove their masks for extended periods and some (some people said "most") people at the gathering didn't wear them at all.

I was listening to Dr John Campbell last night, he was talking a lot about ventilation. Opening the doors and windows to get air to flow through. Yes, we may be a little cooler this winter but it's necessary to circulate the air.
I have said from the beginning of this damn virus, we will need herd immunity to put an end to it. I know all the terrible stats that requires, but I do not believe there is any other way out.
As my dear 90 year old friend with dementia says... "we can only run for so long"

Jennifer, most theories of herd immunity include the availability of vaccination. With that caveat, I agree with you.

The last two Mondays I have have attended "live" WW (Weight Watchers) meetings. I won't be going anymore because of us being in the Red Zone the Governor has warned people over 65 (I'm 73) to not leave their homes for non-essential reasons. So I'm down to my two grocery shopping trips a week.

I'm down to my two grocery shopping trips a week. I hear you. I only leave the house to pick up the newspaper in the driveway, check the mailbox, 1 trip a week to grocery store, 1 trip a week to pick up pizza, plus a little yard work. We have had no more than two people visiting at a time on the deck, six feet apart, but we have dialed that back. A couple of times we all ended up inside. Oh and a few visits to CVS and I had a blood draw early on in the pandemic. We have had a couple of workmen in for various things. They wore masks and we stayed away from them as much as possible. I was just looking back at the start of this thread in late Feb. My, how things have changed.

Jennifer, most theories of herd immunity include the availability of vaccination. With that caveat, I agree with you. Dr John Campbell's daily video last night gave a lot of detail and explanation on transmission. Did you know that measles is the most catchy virus? We need 95% immunity for herd immunity. With Covid, we need between 50 and 67%. Last I heard we are estimated to be at 20% globally. He's really so interesting.

Jennifer , It is about more than masks. It's also about wearing the masks correctly. It's about the type of face covering used. It's about wearing the mask 100% of the time when gathering with people not in your immediate household. It's about washing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds 100% of the time or using hand sanitizer 100% of the time. The spread now is also about small gatherings at peoples home and yards. Which people seem to be doing more and more. That said, masks are just one line of defense as Itsrad noted. Did you see that mouthwash may be helpful? It might be something to add to your arsenal if you are out and about and were talking with people. When you return home and wash up, use some mouthwash. Also don't forget to disinfect doorknobs, keys etc. anything you touched while out. Can't hurt and may help. You can google: Covid + mouthwash for articles.
