Re: the Second Wave. This truly is what concerns me, even more so than what is happening now which is bad enough.

I'm finding it disheartening how easy it is to feel attacked and then go on the defensive. This is not aimed at anyone, just an observation of the entire national scene these days. It seems like everyone is getting forced into the Trump playbook whether they will or nil.
Re car trips I was strictly referring to driving around and not exiting the car. If you're really concerned, keep the windows rolled up.
ETA: I suppose conceivably one could have a breakdown or an accident or a flat tire and have to exit the vehicle. But I'm willing to roll the dice on that one.

There are people all over the country becoming complacent. That’s exactly right. I’m an equal opportunity naysayer of anyone being dismissive of the guidelines when adherence to them is within one’s control. Whether that person lives in Los Angeles, CA or Colleyville, TX or Istanbul, Turkey. My exasperation is not directed at any one state or location so I hope I am never mistaken for bagging on one place again. I was disheartened when we had to have our beaches and Santa Monica mountains hiking trails closed because people didn’t have sense enough to obey the stay at home orders. Not because I wanted to go to the beaches or trails but because I hoped people had enough respect for their fellow citizens to try and limit the spread of this virus.

I hoped people had enough respect for their fellow citizens to try and limit the spread of this virus. ^This^ is what bums me out more than anything too Fin, that so many people simply don't give a shit about anyone else but themselves.
BTW, I appreciate the Thank You banner at the top of this page, thank YOU itsrad & DebDoesWW !
fullmahina, where did you find that graphic, if I may ask? I'd like to share it with my epidemiology friends. Thanks!

To the original question... I'm not sure if it's a permanent change yet or not but, I'm finding it easier to stay home.
For years now I have been flying by the seat of my pants, running here and there. On a hamster wheel of sorts.
Staying home for a day meant I was sick.
Now staying home means I really didnt "need" to go anywhere.

That was us too. The stay at home order has definitely gotten me so much more alone time with my girls. Time I never typically had anymore. We had gotten so used to constant play dates which were fun of course and I made a lot of good friends out of it but it is nice to spend time with my girls since their little girl phases are quickly slipping through my fingers.

fullmahina, I just wanted to share with you, and others, that I sent your map above to my friends who have been international epidemiologists for decades, often working on outbreaks and pandemics around the world. They've all seen that map minus the red markings. It is indeed an accurate map of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic, however, the red markings - we're not sure where they came from - but they're not necessarily what will happen in re: COVID-19. As you know, COVID-19 is not the flu, and so much is currently unknown about C-19. We know from history, that yes, flu outbreaks occur each Fall - Winter, so it's a seasonal thing, even though it is possible to get some type of flu in the Summer. Anyway, my point is, we don't know the patterns right now, so it may be quite a different pattern, or no pattern at all. Not saying it wont happen with even worse peaks, but we just don't know. I'm trying to prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and do whatever is in my personal power to stay safe.

surfgirl, thank you for showing the map to professionals and getting clarification. One thing we do know for sure is that we just don't know what the future holds with the Covid-19.

I don't think we are making the same mistakes. From what I read there were huge celebrations and gatherings to celebrate the flu being "over".
I know there are some outliers but many of us are doing our best to slow this thing down.

It is indeed an accurate map of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic, however, the red markings - we're not sure where they came from - but they're not necessarily what will happen in re: COVID-19. The modern "red markings" are cautionary and I believe the red markings are meant to roughly denote where we will be in deaths in June/July. We have actually surpassed that July 1918 total in the US, sadly---looks like the total on the graphic is about 80,000 and we are approaching 100,000 deaths and it's not even June yet. I don't think the illustration was meant to be taken as a hard prediction, simply a warning of what may happen. Not saying it wont happen with even worse peaks, but we just don't know. I'm trying to prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and do whatever is in my personal power to stay safe. Exactly. Absolutely hoping for the best. I just spoke with a friend in another state that has been hit hard. She was super-vigilant but now declares that she has "had it, and I will go crazy if I don't get out" so she is going out shopping today with her daughter who does not live with her. Oh, and the grandson is along for the ride too. She is now musing that no one in her family has gotten it yet so it will be okay. Her daughter's husband is a parts manager in an auto repair center and is deemed "essential" and has been working since this all started. No one has ever been tested. Alrighty then. I made an excuse to cut the conversation short and poured another cup of coffee. surfgirl , I am with your "do whatever is in my personal power to stay safe" statement. After driving through town after grocery shopping yesterday it was obvious that many are not making an effort to comply anymore, if they ever did. The grocery store was very strict, arrows on the floor (people actually apologized when they realized they were going the wrong way), everyone wore a face covering, etc. In our little town, however, I saw people coming in and out of places with no masks, no social distancing. I know that many employers will be doing their best to keep their employees and customers safe during the re-openings and I hope we will not suffer the "waves" of outbreaks that some scientists feel are inevitable (COVID-19 resurgences plus the regular flu). What I fear might happen is that people will become complacent (already happening) and weary of the efforts needed keep us safe.

fullmahina , agreed. Sadly, we have a gross lack of leadership right now, so it's every man, woman and child for themselves, or that's how it's feeling. I've been pretty okay with this whole thing until last weekend. Things are opening up and yes, people are getting lazy. It's mindboggling but I assume those going around without face masks and not respecting social distancing are the same folks bitching about their rights being violated, but hey! Go infect others freely asshole...
ETA: Thanks for letting me bitch here in a safe space...it helps...!
