cj59, we've evacuated twice in the 20 years we've had this house. Both times getting back to see if everything made it was a big anxiety issue.

Unless the earthen dams fail here there's no danger probably of massive flood for my home here. Sorry you had some leakage CJ and I understand completely about all the things that can go wrong. My house is 40 years old and has issues and I think that you said yours is much older. My dh can fix some things but there are some things that he doesn't know how to fix or would be unable due to needing someone to help. I would be glad too to live in a place where all you have to do is call the maintenance person.
Rene the only time we were advised to evacuate was back in 2006 when there was a massive wild land fire in the mountain behind our house. We didn't though and the fire didn't come this way thankfully
Today I'm working on a hat I started several months ago and I forget what the pattern is called. I searched thru my list and couldn't find it so I studied it and figured out how to finish the body but with this stitch I don't know how you would decrease for the top. It's made bottom up. So it finally came to me to steal an idea from one of the crochet group files to keep making it straight, Make it taller, and then gather, leaving a bit at the top so that it makes what I can only describe as a type of ruffle top. This looked really nice on the hat I actually made from that pattern that utilized that plan.

The house I live in is 86 years old and needs a lot of maintenance. My father was really good at all that. He taught me a few things, but there's just too much for me to take care of and I don't like having people in the house to work on things (personal issue ) so I tend to "make do". I'd just be happy to find a house that was 20 years old or less

I have never been asked to evacuate...but one thing I do know. Frequently we have vacationed on the Atlantic coast and on a barrier island. Its a bit of an unnerving experience to see all the hurricane evacuation route signs- knowing that if you are stuck on this little barrier island there is only ONE way out in the event of an emergency. One year my family and I stayed at Hatteras Island. The remote nature of it creeped out both Dh and me and we swore never to stay there again. Pretty place to visit but too far out in the middle of nowhere for me.
Rene, yes I can imagine that being asked to evacuate is a very upsetting experience. How do you know what to take with you- and how far away do you have to go?? Difficult questions for sure, and the forecasts are not always right. Hey- how is that new machine working out???
That is so Ruth- to be able to figure out how to work your way through a pattern and adjust it even though you no longer have the pattern. I am sure the hat looks great. So have you ever considered writing your own hat pattern to include all the best attributes of other patterns?? I am sure you would be great at it, as you have such a talent for figuring out what others meant in their patterns when they did not do such a great job of describing it.
Blue skies and a lovely breeze here this evening. Hard to believe we were in a bad tropical storm4 hours ago.
Off for a quick walk - then working on that binding.
Hi to Sue and Phyl.....and all else out there who are stopping in to say hello. Ginny

I feel like I'm bragging also but there are a lot of things on crochet that I don't know how to do. For instance, I'm still not very good with the magic circle and chainless foundation is a problem for me. I'm going to practice that this evening because I want to use it for dh's pocket scarf. I'm terrible at making hats in the round where turning at the beginning of every row is needed.Actually I have made up a lot of hat patterns myself. I use bits and pieces of things I've seen and go from there. anyone coulld do it. With all your beautiful choices in quilting I know that both Ginny and CJ and probably Sue and Phyl could easily make up a hat pattern using various stitches to create a new look. And with your sense of color you coulld make a great tapestry into a hat, blanket, or anything

choney2, with Ike, we went all the way to the other side of San Antonio and was there for 4 days. With Rita we went to Houston (lol -40 miles away) and ended up getting flooded out at the Marriot there and went West to the other side of Katy (about 40 miles) and were out for 3 days total. Luckily we had power back on both times within a day, because it's freaking hot here in August and September.

Hello Crafters Ginny - I'm glad the storm went through your area quickly, like it did mine. How's that binding coming along? I saw a video yesterday showing how to machine bind the quilt (front and back) and I want to try that on some of my quilts. But there are some I'd want to hand stitch to the back too. Ruth - You never seem like you're bragging, you are always an crafting inspiration to me - I love to read about all your many projects Rene - I'm sorry to hear you've had to evacuate several times, but glad you were able to get back in your home alright and have power quickly. Loss of power is always my biggest concern. Phyl - Sitting outside enjoying a cinnamon roll and the company of a friend sounds like a wonderful thing to do - I'm glad you had a beautiful morning for it. Hope the chiropractor will be able to help you. Sue - Hope the weather is good there. It's a warm, sunny day here and I think a bit humid. I go out and get the mail quickly and come back inside, so I'm not out long. I received the yearly property tax bills in the mail today. They didn't go up, so that's nice. I saw an interesting video yesterday by Jordan Fabrics. She went over the full steps for finishing a quilt. It's a bit long, but I thought some of you might enjoy seeing the steps and you can fast forward to things you'd like to see more - like putting on borders, backing, quilting and binding. Here's a link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE5CqpWaReATake care everyone!

I finished my Jelly Snowflake quilt tops and wanted to share some pictures. Here's the Christmas version full size and a close up of one block so you can see the fabrics better.

Here's the Pink, Green and White version. I decided to turn the 4 corner blocks the opposite way on this one since I didn't need it to look like a snowflake. I like how it turned out. Here's a close up of the fabrics:

I just found out that my DGC will be spending at least the first semester doing online classes. I guess it was decided this week, after I talked to my other DD. I spent over two hours on hold today getting shifted from person to person before I was given the right number. Still didn't get connected to anyone who could help. Tomorrow! The customer service person couldn't figure out the right person either. Another dry T storm this afternoon. The clouds are keeping the temp in the 80s. That works. After my telephone Wellness exam the doctor's office didn't send in my prescriptions. I thought they had been sent. Running out.

They're doing telephone wellness exams now? And I thought my wellness exam was bad!! Were they the people that had you on hold for so long? CJ, I'm speechless. Those quilt tops are so beautiful and I'm being sincere. The top one with the L's facing outward turned out great. My eye was drawn to the border and the matching L's. ON the second quilt with the L's turned is wonderful too. It looks like they're framing everything. The borders are perfect. Neighbor brought food again. I don't think we look like we're starving.. . Today he brought something that he said was a chicken and rice dish. Looks like Spanish rice to me and it looks good. There was also a green pepper and two white onions in the bag and he also brought a whole bag of granny smith apples. He said that a lot of this food he got from another neighbor who had some misfortune and is short on money. That neighbor goes to the food bank. He said that, when the food bank kept piling food into the boxes he told them he didn't need that much but they insisted that he take it and told him that what he couldn't use to give away so he gave a whole lot to my neighbor who then brought some to us.The rice thiing my neighbor cooked up himself. Most of my crafting so far today was looking at the crochet groups to see what all everyone is making and looking at patterns. I don't know why I do that because I already have so many patterns. Then I finally got to actual crocheting and finished another hat that I started last night. It's another Joshua tree one. I finished the other that I mentioned that I had started months ago and couldn't remember the pattern name. The way I finished it looks really cute....esp for a made up thing since I didn't know how to decrease it. My reasons for doing hats now is twofold...first is to make nice hats to donate. I want people to have nice hats for winter. The other reason is that I have a large box of wool ease yarn. Some was mine and some belonged to a friend who wanted to downsize her stash so sent yarn to me. I used some last year but still have a lot left so I want to use up a bunch of this. That's one of my crochet goals. On every skein I end up with just a little left which is going to be perfect for making littled ragdoll amigurumis. There is a woman who has a blog called Spin A Yarn who has patterns for a lot of cute ones and with all the littles in my family now they will be loved. I don't know that you can donate handmade toys. Have a wonderful night everyone. I hope you all sleep well

Good evening, Ruth what a wonderful attitude you have about making hats- desiring that folks have nice hats for winter. That is just so sweet of you and the lovely hats you make are much more of a kind personal statement than a mass produced hat from the dollar store. Wool ease yarn is nice to work with- so I am glad to hear that you are using that. It holds shape well and does not fray much when being worked with. What a kind neighbor you have! Don’t know how you would even begin to repay such kindness, but its sure nice to know that this neighbor thinks so highly of you and Dh. How did the meal taste?
Sue- how often do you have wellness exams? I am just curious regarding how frequently they will do them over the phone before the doctor will actually want to see you. Too bad about the prescriptions which I hope are all straightened out now! Glad DGD is starting school online - so she can stay safe.
CJ- the quilts are magnificent!!! I really love the Christmas one and the snowflake pattern. Think that the border on that quilt really brings together the fabrics and balances the green. Its so pretty. Amazing how flipping the “L” shaped pieces changes the entire look of the quilt! In both cases your fabric selection is stunning . Thanks for posting the link for the quilt finishing video. Tomorrow I have more time and will finish viewing it then.
Phyl- hope that you can stay comfortable enough through the weekend to make it to Mondays visit to the chiropractor. Sounds like you and Delona had a wonderful time together. Cinnamon rolls are a special treat. You gotta be careful with squirrels, they can be nasty.
Last night a friend of DD’s texted me at 10 pm- finally stopped around mid night. I am just a little bit tired. Ha ha ha. Today I ran some errands early on. Cooked this am (had the family over for dinner) and then the chimney cleaner came. Seems like I need to repair/replace my wood burning stove as its not safe. Gotta get a second opinion....but its disappointing news for sure. Dinner with the family went well. Now its time to get some sleep.
G’night all Ginny

Phyl, I had an art teacher in 5th grade that had a finger bitten off by a squirrel she was attemping to feed. Ginny's correct...they can be nasty
Ginny, how nice to have had the family over for dinner. I know everyone enjoyed it. I just don't think that because people are poor or homeless that they should have to wear ugly things. I check on those crochet groups to find out what is trendy and make mostly those for young people and women and find the ones that are mentioned as being liked by men. There is one called the Lakeside beanie that seems to be loved by men and it's nice and warm too
