Good morning Phyl and Ginny and CJ. Even though it's supposed to be hot this week today is the exception and it's cool and damp right now. We might go out to do a couple errands later so hopefully it gets just a smidge warmer
PHyl, sorry your blocks didn't come out right. Was it the size that was off after you trimmed them? As I've mentioned, I'm not a quilter. I did attend a series of classes way back in 2004 and they had what seemed to be an easy way to cut blocks but after that class I've never tried it.. I've intended to but my intentions don't always work out.Anyway, I'm sure someone can find a great use for your blocks.I'm always amazed at what you quilters can do with a few simple squares.
I did do some crocheting yesterday but have a long way to go on this blanket.I think that when we go to Walmart next I'm going to try to find some nice soft yarn to start #4 grandson's blanket. He picked two...a filet star blanket and a blanket with an elephant in it. I'll do the star one first because it will be the easiest and fastest.Walmart, though, has a very limited yarn section.I"m hoping to try another Walmart soon.

Ruth, hope that there is another Walmart not too much further than the first one. Yes, some Walmarts now only carry really basic (and limited) amounts of yarn. Kind of stinks. Glad you are getting some crocheting time in. And there is much to be said about the perfect block size- its all in cutting and seaming and the final trim. Some days I am ok and others my blocks are not so good. But that goes for any craft - my crochet gauge can be off from one day to the next.
Phyl-I forget, do you decorate for all the holidays - will you be putting up decor for Memorial Day? I am sure Sandy will find a way to use your blocks..and you are probably much harder on yourself than necessary. Hope you had a good day.
CJ- what are you up to??
I have to go back and read the final posts from yesterday- had company late in the day and DGD#2 slept over last night. She was very well behaved and she is a lot of fun to be with- but it sure made my morning hectic.
I hope to check back in later on after I have read the posts. I do need to put my sewing room back in order, I put away all my cutting tools and fabric cause little ones were here.

CJ- were you able to figure out how you will balance the lights and darks using that layer cake fabric? (I wonder if. You can find pics of other quilts made with that fabric to inspire you- or help you see what you do not like).
I love what my pastor said about Mother’s Day yesterday….first off, we all had/have a mom. She might have been good or not so good….but still gave birth to us and for that we should be thankful. And as women, we all mother each other- had this discussion with my neighbor who now attends church with me and never had any children. She is a wonderful and loving aunt, however and I know is cherished by her family. We all bless each other here and I am thankful for each of you.
Off to restore my sewing room. G

Your pastor is so right. We all had mothers and some of us had people that were like a second mother. And we do tend to mother each other. On this message board thread I think we are all thankful for the others that join us here.
Ginny, your life
is so busy between working and babysitting that it's a wonder that you get any blocks done. And YOu've mentioned that you think I'm a good crocheter but one of the basics is guage swatches and I've never done one. If I ever do apparel I guess I'll have to start doing it.
CJ you must have had things to do today other than be here since I haven't seen you. Maybe you posted and I missed it somehow.
We did get our errands done and dh is now out mowing. Thankfully we have a riding mower now. I remember those years of the old fashioned push mowers without any power source and of course the push ones that were fueled with gasoline. Now that was a huge job for us with over an acre to mow.
Have a great evening everyone

Hi, Ruth, quilter who comes up with the idea is the one who will square up the blocks.some of us are great at making blocks and squaring them up and others are not
I did get the Easter decor down ,I do not do st. paddy's day, Christmas Valentine's day,(not this year)my red, white and blue will go up and stay till labor day or so,then come fall (no hall-o-ween) we don't get many kids anymore.the weekend after Thanksgiving ,CHRISTMAS GOES Up bay window and kitchen.
the other times it is just the bay window.I AM FINDING OUT IN MY OLD AGE I am starting to drag getting stuff out and down, except for Christmas .PHYL

Phyl, that sounds like a good way to do it that is, the one thinking it up does the squaring. In my series of classes they didn't teach us anything about squaring. Maybe that's why mine were kind of out of kilter.
I gave up on decorating a few years back. I am thinking of making some wall hangings to decorate but not for any special holidays. I'm just getting tired of the things that are on my walls now which have been there for years.
I'm thinking of ripping out this blanket. It's turning out to be very dense and heavy. I did start one of the same only instead of putting two stitches in each chain or previous row stitch, I'm doing only one. I haven't got far enough to see how it's working yet and I've left the original one intact for now but I'll see how I like the new one and if it's ok the old one will be ripped out. I did mess up the starting chain on this new one somehow even though I checked the multiples several times but I'm leaving it like that for now.

Hello Everyone - Hope you are all doing well today Phyl - I've had blocks that just came out wrong too, even though I followed the directions. Hopefully they can make them work. I hope you enjoy your red, white and blue decor over the summer Ginny - Hope you were able to get your sewing room back in order Ruth - I hope you didn't have to rip out the blanket, or if you did you are able to get it started again. I remember using the push lawn mowers, lots of work but good exercise for a younger person. Sue - I hope you are doing well and having some warmer weather After the rainy weekend here, we've had two sunny days and milder weather, just a bit breezy but I like a nice breeze. I went out yesterday to run some errands, so I didn't get to work on any crafting. This morning I finished making the quilt using the layer cake "Fields of Gold" fabric line and I'm pretty happy with it. I added a 3 1/2 inch border to the top and it finished at 67x71, so it is almost square. After working with the fabrics in the layer cake, I kind of wished I'd used a dark gray fabric for the strips instead of the black, but the yellow, gray and black goes nicely together. I guess binding it in black fabric would tie it all together. I'm going to try to resist starting any other new projects this month since I have several things I need to get done - the hourglass blocks for the Oh Say Can You Sew quilt along, my Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks - the color for May is green and I have a lot of green scraps, and that hand quilting on the green and block blocks small quilt (you can see a bit of it in the right side of the picture of the quilt top I finished today). Take care everyone!

CJ, yes a dark gray would have been great too but I do like the black also. I don't know how you manage to keep up with all your works in progress. No matter how many you're working on though, they come out beautiful.
I haven't ripped out my blanket yet but I did start another. This pattern is called snowy mountains and for the mountains has trianges in two colors. My triangles didn't come out looking like triangles in either try so I did rip the second one out back to the beginning of the triangle row to see if I can do it better. I may have to ask dgd to pick a different blanket.
CJ, I meant to say that your green and black quilt that's peeking from the corner looks just like a pattern for a crochet blanket that's called inverse squares. I haven't tried that one yet.
Hot here today. We have fans going so far. Might have to resort to a/c even though I hate what that does to the electric bill

CJ- the quilt top is so pretty!!!I gotta say when I first saw the design when you provided the link, I was wondering if I would like it. But you did a magnificent job of putting it together and alternating the dark and light fabrics. Its a very pretty quilt top.
Ruth, glad you have a riding mower and how much easier it is for Dh to mow! Have you figured out what pattern you will use for the afghan? Sounds like the original pattern was too heavy- and I know you will figure it out.
Phyl- good for you for decorating as much as you do and am glad you got Easter decor down so you can set up for the Patriotic holidays.
Babysat today….and 2 of the 3 little ones were cranky. Long day for sure.
See ya tomorrow G

Well the riding mower didn't turn out to be so good after all but it's probably not it's fault. The grass was quite long and still wet from the day before so there was a lot of stress on it and I don't know if that's what caused it but the belt broke so will have to get that taken care of.
I'm sorry the grandchildren were cranky. Maybe teething?
See you all tomorrow

Good point Ruth- both little ones, a year apart in age but both under the age of 2 are getting teeth.
Gosh that stinks about the mower. Yeah if the grass was too high and wet grass- well I know what that does to my mower.

Well I hope the little fellows feel better soon.
So I did rip out the blanket that was too dense and heavy. It called for a cluster comprised of two hdc's in each stitch so I , on the new one, just did one hdc in each stitch. My dgd asked me in emaill what I was doing that day so I told her I was working on her blanket...the one she wanted...but the mountains in it weren't looking like triangles like they should. She sent me an email back saying that it didn't matter to her if all the mountains didn't look perfect. So on with it I went as they started to look triangular like they're supposed to
It's a very hot day here again.I'm not all that happy with this hot but I'm still going to work on some crocheting in a couple minutes

Ruth, I somehow thought that warm weather did not bother you much- and I am sorry to hear that its so warm.and I hope that the temperatures drop soon and become more spring like. In my book its too early for it to be very hot, unless you are in the Deep South. Glad to hear that DGD is accommodating your variation in the pattern. I hope that it works out beautifully and is not too bulky. I can imagine that working on a bulky project in hot weather is not too satisfying.
Think the heat is supposed to built in my area this weekend. Guess I will have to find inside stuff to do to stay comfortable. I did run an errand this afternoon and got a few other things done. I finished cutting the backing for the remaining blocks, now need to cut the batting into the same size squares and the jelly roll into strips so I can start the next round of blocks. It felt good to get back to playing with fabric.
See ya later Ginny
