Think the proof of how ready we are to reopen as a nation will be the Covid statistics.

My sister (she lives on the Kansas/Missouri state line) went tanning yesterday and got her nails done. She did wear her mask and said both locations were by appointment only and had plenty of safety measures in place (dividers and cleaning). Also, employees were wearing masks. She also has been working (she works in a daycare) and parents who were working at home were still bringing their babies in (no, they were not essential works having to go into work). The parents were home with older kids, having to do e-learning with them and didn't want to deal with the baby. It just blows my mind! They also were not allowed to wear masks because it "scared the babies!" SERIOUSLY!! So far no cases at the daycare she works at, but I bet it's only a matter time. UGH!!
I am NOT ready for this!! I am OK to wait (but dang, I do need my nails done!)
I know there will be a surge in cases in my county as things open up. We have been pretty lucky so far, but I'm sure that luck is about to run out!

Right now PA is doing a red, yellow, green three phase opening.
Most of the state is in red- full stay at home, no gatherings, masks, etc
Some of the rural counties that have very low numbers are going to yellow. They may have gatherings of 25 or less if everyone is wearing a mask. they can have drive in movies and drive in type church services.
Construction, golf courses and out door things have opened
We are still in Red. Rick has to go to work every other day and does shopping, etc on those days. He wears a mask, a hat, and gloves. He sanitizes his gloves when he's done and then sanitizes his hands. He is very careful not to bring anything home to me.
I understand wanting to get out of the house, but I want to live more.
These Covidiots are just going to make things worse and all of this to last longer. I heard somewhere that they think it will take a decade to recover from this- whenever it ends.
I'm hearing rumors that some states are saying that their school will not re-open until 2021. I can't possibly imagine that, but if that what it takes to keep everyone safe, then so be it.
As our Secretary of health says every day "Stay calm, Stay home, stay safe"
Be safe everyone

My husband laughed when I told him of this new word. Think the proof of how ready we are to reopen as a nation will be the Covid statistics. So far I've read that Trump, governor of Texas, and Chris Cristy have all said: there will be deaths. So they know that the reopening is going to cause more deaths.

Love the term Covidiots!!!
Now I hear my governor is going to use this crisis as a way to reinvent education- with the implication that things can and will never resume to the way they used to be. For working parents that is a concern, how are they to educate their children and also put food on the table? Honestly I think its a a veiled attempt by my governor to cheapen the cost of education (and throw that on the backs of parents) in a state that already has insanely high taxes to support some of the frivolous programs that he supports. Yes I want our society and our children- all our residents safe. Hope that the vaccine that might be ready in the late fall has a great level of efficacy. I do not see how further deaths can be avoided without locking each of us in a sterile room- or an effective vaccine and good drug therapies to save lives.

choney2, in what state do you live? I'd hate to think of the education of our students being down graded. I'm a former pre-school teacher and I know the importance of teachers and what they do. Most parents can't take on the full-time education of their children, unless we're going back to the Little House on the Prairie living in a solitary life. That's not preparing our children for their future life.

bbbearsmom Yes our Covidiot in charge has said there will be more deaths as we open up more and with more testing there will be more confirmed cases especially if you don't continue to do the social distancing. How about your idiot comment face masks are a recommendation and it's not mandatory.I am proud to be a Texan but between Abbott and Paxton we have an idiot governor and his band of monkeys.Friday hair, nail and tanning salons can open. I am not rushing out to get my hair cut for sure. Even though he opened up restaurants and movie theaters last Friday he said those aren't on his list to go to.I'm sure the man has never been to a store to buy groceries,he doesn't need to eat out since they have a chef I'm sure and I'm sure he can see any movie he wants to in the governor's mansion. I guess I have become too cynical when it comes to government. Our local mayor did make a good point though. He said we don't have to wait to see what the government is going to mandate or not.We need to do what we know is best for our families. I still wear a face mask anytime I'm out in public mandated or not. It's common sense.

I also live in Texas (NE Tarrant County). So lots of thoughts on this. I, personally, am not going out at all. DH and I have gone for a few drives where we didn't get out of the car. He has gone to the store a few times for necessary stuff. We get most things delivered or use curbside pickup.
Texas is opening up too quickly in my opinion. I could see loosening restrictions in some areas, perhaps, but it is too fast. I read that originally the governor planned to wait until 5/18 to open up hair salons, nail salons, etc. but got pressure within his party so is opening them this Friday.
This whole economy v. public health thing is in my opinion silly. I do want to have a good economy. But, you can open up the economy all you want but if the public health problem isn't solved then people won't go out and do stuff. I am not going to restaurants or even to get my hair done (and I need my roots done) because I don't feel safe enough doing it. Lots of people feel the same. There are some who are heedless, but most are more concerned at least in the more populated areas.
Also the idea that the only choices are (1) lockdown until there is a vaccine or (2) open willy nilly to get herd immunity is just wrong. There is another path. I agree we can't lockdown until there is a vaccine. But just trying for natural herd immunity will likely results in hundreds of thousands dead, perhaps even over a million.
The other path -- which has been used successfully in other countries -- is to open up businesses, etc. when you have slowed down infection enough that you can quickly test everyone who is sick or even might be infected. You even test some people without symptoms. Then you do contact tracing of people they spent significant time with and then you test those people and isolate them for 14 days. If they get sick you trace their contacts and test them. If you do that, then eventually the virus doesn't get passed on to a lot of people as it gets stopped in its tracks by the testing and isolating. The virus still exists out there but it isn't being widely spread.
For this to work, you need to have lots of testing capacity and need to tests widely and often. In fact, this is actually the approach they are using the in White House right now. The president, VP and top aides get tested at least once a week. Lower aides get tested who spend much time with the president. Because of the testing everyone can go about their day and do stuff and they know they will catch an outbreak quickly. That is the model that has been used in other countries successfully. It would work here. Some states are trying to do it. Other states just aren't really bothering. They would rather just let people die needlessly based upon a false choice between health and economy.

Finreporter, that is absolutely hysterical.
I too have to get my roots done, but just before things started closing down in my state bought boxes of color....my daughters actually told me I did just as good a job as the wonderful beautician who does my hair, so I will use that second box probably next week. I look forward to seeing my hairdresser when its safe to do so- but she is pregnant and will be taking some time off to have her baby. Perhaps I will return to her when she returns to work. I can trim my bangs....and will be happy with waiting until I see how things go as my state opens up. BTW, when I do my own color, I send her a check with her normal tip in it (plus a little bit) because I am so thankful for what she does for me.
Yes, testing is the answer....testing and tracking. And sanity. Things ainβt going back to normal for a long time folks.
I live in a beautiful area of the great state of New York. NY is NOT all New York City......I suspect that my region will start to open up before the city. My governor, who has an ego larger than the Grand Canyon has been robbing public funds to support strange initiatives in NY for years, and he does seem to forget that this state is so much more than the city.

Finn- I love it! That is so funny!
I can't imagine education being like this full time. Although I've heard rumor that some districts are not going to open until Jan 20221
Parents needs to work and students need to be in school, for many reasons. Face to face teaching, social interaction with students and teachers.
And teachers need to be in school! I miss my kids so bad. seeing them on zoom is not the same. The personal interactions is as much of a learning tool (especially for kids with Autism) as any book or curriculum.
I can't take credit for the word covidiots- I saw it on Pinterest. But it's been used A LOT around my house recently.
Stay safe everyone

choney2, I have some brush on root cover powder that I use if I am going anywhere in the car lol. Sons prep school is going back to full hours (probably to avoid the unemployment supplementation hassle for the owners) BUT they're using the time to clean and do some remodeling/updating since they are still on "essential workers kids only" for another 2 weeks(I think).
