Ok!
CJ- glad you got back to that quilt show and spent more time in the country store. Indeed, they do have some really cool fabrics and fat quarters at shows, so that you do not have to travel to all the different quilt shops- you can just go to the craft show! WHich machines were you interested in? they all look amazing to me- and are so programmable now! How are you handling this heat wave?
Meg, well that is a pretty simple recipe for the rhubarb sauce- and it leaves a LOT of room for creativity based upon the fruits that are available. Sometimes I have trouble with this site, and I used to have lots of trouble with Weight watchers. Mid day was a typical time that they would drop a post or two....
Ruth, it seems as though every family has a person or two like my SIL. It kind of makes me feel good to hear you vent about the same situation in your family. WIth regard to my SIL- I have always known she was spoiled and an attention hog- this is my first real exposure to seeing how she handles a difficult life situation on her own. She manipulates others into helping her because she is "poor Cathy". Cathy is not her name- when I first met Dh all I heard his mother say was that we. Had to do this and that all to help out "poor Cathy". Obviously its a role that she is comfortable in and wants to continue in. All I can say is that if it was my house that house would have been empty in early May- and all the drama she is causing now would not be. And Ruth, we love hearing about your life....its ok. Lord knows I post plenty about myself, probably way too much.
Ok because I am working from my dumb memory I forget what I wanted to say.
HopePhyl can check in.....gotta go take DGD to preschool Ginny

Good morning Ginny and all who come in later and those that read but don't post.
I'm having a cup of coffee then will be off to take a shower and get dressed to go to see the doctor. I also have to stop at the store with pharmacy to make out another form that's needed to get dh's prescriptions thru the mail. Apparently the credit card I listed has expired and they won't take info on the new one over the phone.
Well Ginny, I could write and encyclopedia on my family and dh's but I won't. Yes dh's sister was spoiled but they were also traumatized by their mother leaving. She was only 5 at the time. She did have her grandmother though and her dad doted on her. I think altho she's "old" now she's still looking for a mother's love.Grandma made excuses for her all the time.
Got the blanket made but not the ends woven in. I'll take something with me to work on while waiting.
Strange thing is I've been talking about the grey yarn and ordered some but just yesterday I realized that I do have some in Red Heart Soft. I don't care for the yarn much but it would work. I think it's a worsted weight. After I get home I'm going to start another blanket but work on the things I want to make for dd and maybe some booties and other little baby things...oh and the tea light holders.
Ok, off to shower and dress. Have a great day and see you all later.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Meg - I'm sorry you had to rip out your blanket, I hope you are able to start over soon. Ruth - I hope the doctor's appointment goes well. One of the quilts I saw this weekend was about 90 % gray fabric with just a touch of an aquamarine/teal fabric - those colors went very well together. Hope you get to work on your crafting later. Ginny - Hope you're surviving the heat too - I'm miserable since I just hate the hot weather. I hope you got your DGD to school O.K. Are you done working for the school year yet? The machines that were being raffled were a Huskavarna midarm quilting machine and frame and a featherweight. They also had a featherweight at the Silent Auction. I don't know what I'd do with a featherweight but it would be neat to have one. Phyl - Hope you are doing well. I didn't do any crafting today, the heat is going to slow me down this summer. That's why I try to get so much more done during the cooler months. Take care eveyone!

yep I am here. cj you would be surprised how many sewers/quilters have feather weights. they bring them to class and workshops and sit and sews. course you ae only doing basic sewing. wish I could find one at a rummage sale or auction. I don't go to those things. to buy them new now days would cost a small fortune. they have color ones now days.
nowdays bindings can be front or back. doesn't make a difference. there are several ways to put two or more colors together now. espically when doing triangles. I have not mastered the front bindings. I need to master getting my mitered corners looking better and connecting the binding. boy are there a lot of ways to do that.
we are watching Sylvie ( neighbors dog) they are closing on the house they bought. then they are also taking the once in awhile stuff they use over. relatives visiting want to seet he house. they they will all go out for supper.
I have my stuff ready for sit and sew tomorrow.
on the hole in the barn door is that already stamped or iron on? phyl

Happy new week to you all.
Keeping Devin occupied is going to be fun. So far he has kept himself busy. He did want to go in the pool but we know the water is not quite warm enough. Our temp. today is in the low 70s and there is a gentle breeze. It will be 90 in a few days and he can swim all he wants. He got some new legos that are keeping him busy I don't have anything on my calendar this week not even a Dr. appt.
I ripped out my baby blanket on Saturday evening. When I do double crochet I never get the edges straight. I have crocheted other patterns and my edges have been ok. I have crocheted b/blankets using the waffle stitch and the chevron & the V stitch.
Ginny, when we made rhubarb sauce we didn't put any other fruit in to it. The rhubarb is very good on its own but I think including other fruit would work well. I had a recipe for rhubarb marmalade which I made once when I lived in Germany. My German landlady had lots of Rhubarb. I am going to have to find out if it will grow in California. Of course we all have a family member who is different. My DB married a girl he met in England and she loved to be pampered so DB pampered her. Even when he was ill he pampered her. I think she expected other family members to pamper her after DB died and that didn't happen. So now I think she is sulking and when I try to contact her she does not respond. I do hear from her daughter.
Ruth, I am going to make a afghan for DGD. I talked to her about colors and we decided on gray, white & pink. We could write a book about our misfit relatives. I don't have a big family as my DBs have all passes. I do have nephews and nieces. When I go over there I stay with my eldest brothers son and I get along with them very well.
cj, What a great weekend you had. It's such fun when we do something we really enjoy. Gray, is becoming very popular as it blends so well with other colors.
Phyl, I never stop at rummage sales perhaps I should and see what treasures I could find.
Have a good evening.

CJ, yes gray really goes well with aqua marine and teal. They're perfect together. I still wish you had won one of those sewing machines.
Meg, the colors you and dgd picked for the afgan are going to really look great together. I'm glad Devin is enjoying his time off so far. Little boys and legos really are a good pairing.
While I was sitting waiting at the doctor's office a woman came in with the cutest little boy. He latched on to me right away and wanted to know if I would come and play with him with the toys they have there. He was so sweet. I'm not sure if the woman with him was his mother or grandmother. She looked a little old to be mother but young to be grandma. At any rate she looked like a really good whichever it was.
NOt much happened at the doctor's office. New med to try and come back in two weeks.
Ginny, I hope your day has been good. I imagine Mondays are really tiring.
Phyl, you asked about soil the other day and yes we do have terrible soil but our neighbors have the same soil we have although the one does compost and her gardens are raised beds so I guess she really doens' have the same soil but the other one does and his rhubarb goes almost too well.

PHyl, I don't know if you'll see this because you already posted today but I was wondering if you've ever read the quilting mysteries by Mary Marks. I'd never heard of her but I ran across one of her books online when I was looking for something to read the ohter day. I read that one and loved it so I found another and am reading that one now. She's written ohters but they aren't available online. AFter the summer and all the tourists are goin I may request them at the library.

Good evening! Ruth, I have total confidence in you that you will find something to make from that red heart soft yarn. Phyl- as I am learning there are TONS of ways to make bindings. Some prefer the separate binding- that is sewn to the back and then brought to the front. Some like a sort of self binding- where the backing fabric is brought over. I have done both and honestly say, it depends on the individual and the quilt. The quilting purists would probably shudder over how I do things...but my quilts will never be judged. Have you ever looked on eBay for a featherweight machine, or gone to a quilt shop for a used one? Not sure if you can get much of a deal that way, but its worth a try. CJ- you sure do get a lot of quilting done in the winter! Lets be honest, the husky mid arm machine or the featherweight would be SO much fun to have- and even more fun figuring out how to use and seeing all the cool stuff you can do! I always put in for a machine give away.....have never won though. The heat a few hunded miles north of you is no better, we are in the low 90's again tomorrow. It's supposed to break tomorrow night. I think you probably get more of an ocean breeze effect than I do - and perhaps its a little more comfortable. Do you have air conditioning? Stay hydrated.....and cool. Yes, I am tired. But did a little embroidery today. Now have to get the silly cat in- which is a story for another day. Hi to Meg, who usually checks in a little bit later Ginny

I will have to check out the Mary Marks books too and see if they are available through my local library system. I have read most of the Jennirfer Chiaverini books- until toward the end of the series, she went political - adding her own political opinion to the book. Bad decision in my book. If I am reading a novel about quilting I do not want to hear what your particular political bias is. If I want to know about politics, I will turn on the news.
Still hot here and the humidity has kicked in. They say its supposed to break tonight and tomorrow will be cooler.
Ruth, sounds like the little boy quickly figured out you were an experienced grandma with a big heart!
Meg, what a sad story about your brothers wife and how her heart is so hard. With your brother being gone, it would be a nice thing if you could stay in touch- as it would help keep memory alive. Perhaps keeping contact through your niece will eventually soften her heart. I pray that would be so.
Got a few minutes of embroidery in....hope I can do more later on too. Ginny

Hello to all
Ginny, yes I've found that there are several authors who bring their politics into their fictional books and what could be good stories are ruined by doing that. Same with tv. I've read several of her books too but as you did I quit reading them also.
Smiling about what you said about the little boy. That's what I told the woman that was with him ..that he must somehow know that I have a lot of grandchildren.
I didn't end up getting any crafting done. I read instead. The main character has decided to give tied quilts to the homeless. Doing a mitzvah...she's Jewish...but she has an ulterior motive too. She's trying to find a possible witness to a murder.
You ladies would love the weather here today. It's only 66 degrees here right now and that's my thermometer so it's probably lower than that. So come on over and I'll have some healthy snacks ready.
Ginny, have you ever read novels by Hannah Alexander? They're Christian mysteries.

Hello Crafters - Hope you are all doing well today Phyl - The Hole in the Barn Door pattern has to be traced. It's not very big and I was able to trace it without a lightbox, by putting the pattern down on a light colored table and then placing the fabric over it to trace. Hope you enjoyed your Sit and Sew today. You're right there are are many ways to put on binding! Ruth - I hope the new medication helps you some. It is cute the way that little boy was drawn to you Hope you are enjoynig your reading and your weather. Ginny - I'm glad you've gotten some more embroidery done, it's easier to do that in the warmer weather - rather than quilting. Hope you get some cooler weather soon. Meg - The gray, pink and white afghan sounds like it will be beautiful. I love those colors together. It's nice that you have a week with no appointments, and I'm glad to hear Devin is enjoying himself. I finished the last block of the Solstice quilt today, now I just have to figure out how I want to lay them out and what material to use for sashing. The two materials that I are light colored cream but with a small print in them. I'm concerned that they will clash against some of the block edges that are also finished with a lighter cream small print fabric. I guess I'll see how it looks on my design wall and go from there. Take care everyone!

hi, sit and sew was fun. elaine and ruth didn't come today. they sit across from us.
I got one charity quilt ready to bind. that one is a little bigger then the others. have one on the table downstairs to sandwich and bind.. so before coming home I started sewing more strips together. this time I am just adding them and going around the square. no rhyme or reason. kinda similar to a log cabin.
meg I don't go to rummage sales. I seem to the find the junky ones. I don't need anyone else's junk. I have friends that can go and find the nicest stuff .not me. phyl

Phyl, I've never been to an actual rummage sale but we used to go to garage sales but gave up on them when it seemed like most people were attempting to sell things they should have thrown in the trash. I do know a woman in Caps for Kids who's dh went to garage sales and bought her several really nice sewing machines. I bought one at a garage sale once, asked the woman if it worked and she said it was perfect. Got it home and it didn't even have a bobbin case. I got one and it still didn't work. The belts slipped. I got new belts....still didn't work. I gave it to GQ with a note explaining what all was wrong with it in case someone wanted to buy one for parts or to repair it.
CJ, I would think a design board would be a lifesaver. You can put everything together and see how it looks. Someone had a wonderful idea there.
Phyl, that's how I'm making my little flannel quilt...Kinda like a log cabin but not exactly. And you make the top and bottom together so that it's already "quilted" and just needs binding.I should get girl fabric and make one for dgd's expected baby but dh will kill me if I buy more fabric... he wouldn't of course but he would probably shake his head and ask don't I have enough fabric. But it's just like yarn, when you want to make a certain thing you never have the right yarn or fabric.
